"... and his mother helped the family survive by taking in laundry from local brothels.... [H]e wielded an irreverent sense of humor, but could be brusque, often not even saying goodbye to colleagues at the end of a phone call.... He deemed President George W. Bush 'a loser' while addressing a group of high school juniors in Nevada in 2005, mused about the body odor of Washington’s tourists a few years later and, when Mr. Obama first ran for president, in 2008, said the country’s first Black president could be elected because he spoke 'with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.'... It was Mr. Reid who saw Mr. Obama’s potential for a successful run at the White House when many Democrats were rallying behind Hillary Clinton.... [H]e sought to undermine Mitt Romney’s presidential candidacy in 2012 by repeatedly, and without evidence, claiming that Mr. Romney had gone a decade without paying income tax. Mr. Reid was even more contemptuous of former President Donald J. Trump, calling him 'a racist' and 'sexual predator' who achieved prominence only because of the fortune he had inherited. Being born into wealth was, of course, alien to Mr. Reid. At the end of his career — after great financial and political success and raising five children, one of whom became an elected official in Las Vegas — he relished showing visitors his dusty hometown.... '[B]e proud of who you are, you can’t escape who you are,' Mr. Reid said in his Senate farewell speech, adding... 'Harry Reid, the guy from Searchlight.'"

The Romans said it well: de mortuis nil nisi bonum.
But for Reid, I am prepared to make an exception.
We’ll miss John Madden. Reid was already becoming deservedly obscure. People like Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, Biden, Obama, and a legion of others set out to put Americans at each others’ throats as a deliberate political strategy. I think the day will come when you, personally, regret seeing people set one against the other, Professor, because you let yourself get sucked into that strategy. If Roe does fall (I don’t think it will, but women will have to learn to live with reasonable restrictions) then that will be a direct consequence of Harry Reid’s tactics. Sow the wind, …
He was an asshole, who cheated at politics
Unmistakably and visibly corrupt.
Harry Reid, the strategic genius who eliminated the Senate filibuster for judicial nominees. Are we certain he wasn't a Stealth Republican? It would be difficult to do more damage to Democrats intentionally than Harry did (presumably) unintentionally.
Harry Reid had no moral compass. That is perhaps his most deserved epitaph. And in the end, he did more harm than good to the causes he supported.
I will miss John Madden. His commentary was almost always insightful. And he brings to mind the better days of the NFL. Has anyone in the NFL tried to work out what is going to happen to the entire industry when Brady finally retires?
He won't be missed.
"after great financial and political success"
Does the obituary ever explain the financial success? I couldn't find anything, but I skimmed a lot of it.
American political life seems to drag participants to "financial success". It's seems to be the rule and not the exception. Funny how that works over and over and over again. I sound like a Dave Clark Five 45 rpm stuck in the fade out.
His financial success was due to his political connections and corruption. I recall where his political knowledge allowed him to buy real estate in advance of a political development.
I also heard he bought partnership interests in wind and solar farms and got a 26% federal income tax credit in year one.
"Does the obituary ever explain the financial success? I couldn't find anything, but I skimmed a lot of it."
He was a senator. Insider trading is their stock & trade
Odd how many Democratic politicians like Reid are poor to middle class when they first go into politics, and yet wind up richer than Elton John when they retire. How does that happen? Even stranger is the NY Times tip toeing around the issue even as they chronicle Reid's childhood poverty.
His father's self-abortion guides Reid to subscribe to the Pro-Choice religion. Wicked.
Harry Reid reported dead.... And they say there is never any Good News in the papers!
Wasn't Reid the guy that was attacked and beaten by the mob?
And, by mob; i course mean: his gym equipment
I think they left out the corruption portion of his life. A man does not live in the Ritz-Carlton, Washington DC unless he's got some green to spare. (most Americans could not afford a night at this place, and those who do save up for a year to spend a couple of nights). This guy rewrote the book on corruption and managed to continue to run Nevada from DC. In fact, he had things so machine-like, he'll probably still run it from below ground.
But, yes- he was a Democrat so let's cover his story in glory.
I liked John Madden and will miss him.
Not exactly a shining example of "our Democracy.".
Time magazine calls him "shrewd.". Euphemism or dog whistle?
Fortunately, he was an old, straight, White Mormon guy, so the hero worship will be minimal and eventually the airport and everything else will be renamed after someone more (or less) worthy.
"Does the obituary ever explain the financial success? I couldn't find anything, but I skimmed a lot of it."
Of course it doesn't, but does "politician makes boatloads of unexplained money in Nevada" really need an explanation?
I'm one who never enjoyed John Madden and his constant repetition of the obvious. "It's third down and 4, so they need 4 yards, so a 3 yard play won't be enough, they need at least 4, they'll have to run a 4 yard play not a 2 or 3 yard play."
"We’ll miss John Madden."
"I will miss John Madden."
"I liked John Madden and will miss him."
I get the like part, it seemed everyone liked John Madden. But miss him? He hasn't done anything since 2009. You won't miss him if you haven't already done so.
after great financial and political success...
"[G]reat", great? Fraud, graft, opportunism, lying for the sake of power.
How far we have fallen.
Prof A @ 6:33: “Does the obituary ever explain the financial success? I couldn't find anything, but I skimmed a lot of it.”
You skimmed a lot of it? Harry skimmed it all.
And just like that, the Searchlight Strangler's reign of terror ended.
In all seriousness, Harry Reid is responsible for Donald Trump's election. That's his legacy. Between pushing through Obamacare, and lying about Mitt Romney's taxes on the floor of the Senate, he helped galvanize conservatives, giving them a cause to rally around and driving them to look for an outsider who would hit back rather than playing the gentleman.
We should only speak good of the dead. Well, he's dead. Good.
I will try to be nice to the recently departed.
Reid was a crook. And that's one of the nicest things that can be said about him.
May he not rest in peace. I hope his after life is full of demons and fire. He deserves nothing less. Sorry, NOT sorry.
For years, the federal government planned a nuclear waste facility far, far below ground at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. But lots of people get scared at the word "nuclear" and Reid was a powerful senator. Rather than educating them on how little they had to worry, he made sure that legislation was passed forbidding it to ever be used. Conventional wisdom now says that there will never be such a facility. That is one reason "preventing climate change" is going nowhere.
For some reason I always associated Reid with the guy who woke up with a dead hooker in Godfather II.
Good cartoon at insty
Reid asks Death/grim reaper if he was a good politician.
Death says no, but that he is now
John LGBTQBNY Henry

RIP and good riddance.

Accomplished, how?
"you can’t escape who you are"
And he never did escape his essential loathsomeness. Flaunted it, to Dem cheers.

That's about as good an explanation for Trump's appeal as there is.
I have an elderly Leftist golfing friend who shares the illusion with other Leftists that Trump himself is personally worshipped and idolized by his supporters. Not too surprisingly he's uninterested in explanations to the contrary.

I can think of one recent exception.
"after great financial and political success and raising five children"
Financial "success" via corruption and insider trading/connections. It's a proven path. Just ask Joe Biden.
Ralph? Ralph? Can you hear me? Ralph
I thought he was already dead.
His upbringing (which I knew nothing about) almost gives me sympathy for him. But not quite. How did his growing up in poverty affect his humanity? It seems to have made him a deceptive, manipulative SOB, who cared nothing for the average citizen. Ironically, Trump, born into wealth, had more of a common touch than Reid.
Barrett, Kavanaugh and Gorsuch send their regards.
This is a dark day indeed for all LLR's and NeverTrump Always-Democraticals everywhere.
I suspect Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are at the top of that List of Lamenters.
What's that?
You belueve Mitt and Ryan were opposed to Reid and his policies?!
LOL
Now would be a good time to wake up.
Wake up. Not woke up..as Romney did by proudly marching with BLM.
'Great financial success' when you're a politician means that you've managed to get filthy rich in unscrupulous ways, ending up with sufficient millions to obscure exactly how many you have, and how you got them. Rich enough to afford the cloaking device, apparently.
I still want to know who gave him the black eye, and why.
Very appropriate that Dead Reid will come up on your "smelly" tag.
Does the obituary ever explain the financial success? I couldn't find anything, but I skimmed a lot of it.
To ask the question, and not find the answer, is to answer it.
Well,he was not able to leap buildings with a single bound but he could steal with both hands.

No wonder he was such an awful person.
The Reid family saga: From laundering for whores to whoring for money launderers in a single generation.
Here we go, the Appeal to Dickens. Did young Harry share an outhouse or an alley with all his neighbors for the number ones & twos? Did he fetch water from a common well? If so, lucky for him the well wasn't contaminated from all the ones-ing & twos-ing piling up.
Any of Dickens's guttersnipes would have boxed young Harry to trade places & would have kicked his ass.
Partner kinda grew up with the Reid kids, though they were a bit younger. The fathers had both boxed, and recognized each other from the Golden Gloves circuit (they never fought, because her father was older, heavier, and had a significantly longer reach - but both loved talking boxing). And had common friends, esp a future NV Supreme Court Justice (their family atty, until he went up on the bench). Everyone else was LDS (found out yesterday that the Reid parents were converts - being LDS IS extremely useful for attorneys in Las Vegas), but her family was RC. They fit in though because of their large family (everyone at these Sunday afternoon parties seemed to have 5 kids).
Then, when I was practicing (patent) law in NV, one of the guys in the firm was one of the tow headed Reid boys my partner had played with decades earlier. Really good guy, but maybe partially because he took such good care of the rest of us. He and his lobbying partner had a box, in the firm’s name, in the minor league baseball park, that we would use when it wasn’t in use by clients, and one year, they put on our Christmas party. Whenever I would run into him, we would joke about being from families with a lawyer father and a bunch of lawyer sons (and in their case, a lawyer son-in-law).
Harry Reid never had a problem trashing innocent people for his own political and monetary gain. Lying on the floor of the Senate about Romney, etc. I don’t want to see any official tributes to this weasel. A despicable man who never saw a crooked deal he wouldn’t turn down. From rags to riches on the taxpayers back. What a disgrace. Hope there is a hereafter, and Harry Reid gets what’s coming to him…a good roasting in hell. Next, Nancy Pelosi another Washington crook.
Harry Reid’s brother worked in manufacturing as a plant manager in LA for the company I worked at, he was really a nice guy.
Mitch McConnell comes in for a lot of criticism by conservatives, but compared to Harry Reid, he's a saint. Reid is up there with Joe Biden, Arlen Specter, Ted Kennedy and Adam Schiff in the pantheon of truly despicable politicians.

Me too.
As far as I am concerned, Reid didn't "pass".
He FLUNKED.
@ Curious George
There were things said and things left unsaid.
He came from a small town and behaved like a small town boy.
A touching note of support from one mob-adjacent grifter to another:
Dear Harry:
Congratulations -- you are amazing!
With best wishes,
Donald Trump
MT says it best:
“I did not attend his funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.”
Good riddance to bad rubbish
It's just sad how much of his evil lives on
Harry Reid is an example of all that is bad and evil in American politics.
Digusting Human being. Not as bad as Ted Kennedy, but in the same league.
This reminds me of Teddy Roosevelt's statement when he heard a Senator had died in 1906.
"I'm sorry he died.... I'm sorry it wasn't Senator XYZ.
George Bush is probably sad. I'm sure he'll issue a statement. In his book he writes that one reason he nominated Harriet Meirs is because Harry Reid told Bush he liked her and thought she'd make a fine justice.
As for Reid lying about Mittens. You'll notice that Conservatives were more upset about it then Mittens. One serial liar never get upset at another.
The funeral will be well attended. when you give the public what it wants- they'll show up.
Funny how these US Senators go into public service poor, and end up rich. Gee, I wonder why.
Reid the poor boy from Searchlight.
Biden the working class boy from Scanton.
Obama the guy from the Chicago Ghetto
Ted Kennedy The lion of the Senate
McCain - the War Hero and Maverick
Schumer - the scrappy streetwise New Yorker
Pelosi - The Brave Woman who stood up to Orange Man
Hillary - America's Sweetheart
Reid was the epitome of all that is wrong with the Government.

His "great financial success" was the same as Biden's, as revealed by the Hunter Biden laptop:
Companies cut deals for him and his family members, in exchange for him doing favors for them. Family members then kicked a large cut back to him
The world's a better place for him leaving it.
Rot in hell, Harry.
