"A growing body of preliminary research suggests the Covid vaccines used in most of the world offer almost no defense against becoming infected by the highly contagious Omicron variant...."

"[O]nly the Pfizer and Moderna shots, when reinforced by a booster, appear to have success at stopping infections, and these vaccines are unavailable in most of the world. The other shots — including those from AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and vaccines manufactured in China and Russia — do little to nothing to stop the spread of Omicron, early research shows.... The Pfizer and Moderna shots use the new mRNA technology, which has consistently offered the best protection against infection with every variant. 'High vaccination coverage combined with early reports that Omicron does not cause serious illness is leading to a false sense of security in the country.... The New York Road Runners has imposed a vaccine requirements on race participants. This is for outdoor races. Moreover, so as not to hinder their ability to attract foreign runners for races such as the New York Marathon, any vaccine approved by the WHO counts -- including the clearly ineffective Chinese vaccines.

So, is the NYRR's new requirement the result of good intentions or a cynical marketing ploy? The same questions could be asked of most COVID-era restrictions. I, for one, will never run another NYRR race.

I like the NYT's juxtaposition of these two statements:

"...Omicron does not cause serious illness"
"...you’re going to have the health system saturated because the number of people getting ill will be higher..."

So apparently we are to conclude that all those non-seriously ill Omicron patients are going to be overwhelming our hospitals.

In what universe does this type of logic make sense?

"They do seem to offer significant protection against severe illness, but the consequences of rapidly spreading infection worry many public health experts"

Except that protection plus infection appears to increase immunity. More vaxxed healthy people need to get infected, for the common good. Lockdowns are counterproductive.

Leland म्हणाले...

The vaccine does not prevent covid. It also does not prevent severe illness. What it seems to do is mitigate the worse effects of covid. As it only mitigates, spreading by the vaccinated has always been a possibility. I understand why so many would be confused, because the CDC and the media fail to use the proper wording that risk professionals typically use.

As for the part about saturating our health system, here is a suggestion: quit over-reacting to a disease that can be treated with symptom management by 80% of the population. Quit acting like those who prefer symptom management to untried vaccine are weird for doing what has normally kept hospitals from being saturated. Instead, everyone with a slight cold to bad allergies runs to the clinic to get a covid test (or forced to do so by their employer) and then goes to the hospital simply because the test was positive while showing no emergent signs for hospitalization.

Temujin म्हणाले...

Vaccine failure is something very real to consider. This as our President and other Governors and 'public health' officials consider just how they can force people back indoors, mandate more vaccinations, and enforce masking. What's happening in Denmark

Omicron is probably working it's way through America as we sit here today. Still, as of today, globally the death rate for this variant is very low. Hospitalization in South Africa has decreased now after an initial strong hit.

So what to do? Here in FL we'll probably just keep living life as each individual feels they can. The malls have been packed, as have the restaurants, sports arenas, and holiday event gatherings. We take part or not. It's up to each of us. Our Governor seems to stay one step ahead of the rest of the nation. The latest is this: DeSantis announces new therapy for Floridians This is not the original monoclonal treatment (which he was first in the nation to make available in quantity around the state), but a new version which can be used for the vaccinated.

Owen म्हणाले...

The more you test, the more cases you will find. If you have a disease that is mostly mild, many of the cases will be asymptomatic and if you detect them with your test, you will have a paper pandemic but no actual public health catastrophe. Most of the people who get infected won't even know it, won't go to the doctor or the hospital, won't die. But if that's the case, the public health commissars and experts won't have a reason to impose yet another lockdown and demand that all the ignorant denialisms be forced to get more shots.

The evolution of this hell-virus --toward a more-infectious but less-dangerous form-- is, I am told what viruses tend to do. The continued (and increasing) authoritarian over-management of the pandemic is now the real public health problem.

While they are panicking, it is hard not to see a mild but more-infectious species of this manmade CCP virus as a blessing in its possible inoculation powers. If natural immunity is broader than mRNA immunity, then natural immunity conferred on us by mild cases of omicron CCP could be a tremendous step in defanging this coronavirus. A few thoughts: The beginning of wisdom about O is not how dangerous it is to ordinary people and how many deaths may be expected; it is the expected damage to the hospital system. From the point of view of a "public health expert", and a politician, the issue is simple: will the hospital system be "overwhelmed" by Omicron? But if we look back, we see that of the unprecedented and truly enormous amount of money the government has spent over the last 2 years to keep the economy afloat and, essentially, pay for the broader effects of NPI's (non-pharmaceutical interventions, which is the fancy term for lockdowns, school restrictions, travel restrictions).... despite this enormous expenditure (the US money supply has increase something like $5 trillion since Covid) not one cent of this tsunami has gone to building ANY new hospital capacity. One thing even people interested in this point don't always understand is the problem is usually not physical hospital space (remember the Javits Center?), but staff -- nurses and, to a lesser extent, physicians. The health bureaucracy should be thinking about allowing asymptomatic nurses who test positive to continue working in Covid wards (if they are willing).....this is the advantage we have with a variant of the disease which produces very mild symptoms. (Which is not to say there will not be many serious cases, simply because of the perhaps/presumably much larger number of people who will be infected by O.). In other words, if the South African data is correct, even hospitalized O patients recover with oxygen -- they rarely "need" ventilators, they rarely die; some will need some form of anti-inflammation drug. Treating these kinds of patients is much simpler than treating the kind of lung-destruction we have seen in earlier waves. PLUS -- rarely mentioned -- we now have Paxlovid and other protease inhibitors which are expected to work against O, and, importantly, are taken AT HOME, no hospitalization required.
Lessons learned? Viruses "mutate". They do not disappear (especially respiratory viruses). They evolve to evade vaccination protection. If the social goal is to absolutely minimize the number of deaths attributable to such viruses, ANY form of extreme
non-pharmaceutical intervention (see New Zealand) can be justified. If the social goal is to balance the interest in protecting the largest number of people from the worst consequences, we should (1) make nursing a better paid field and produce more nurses, FAST! Bring retired nurses, if they are willing, out of retirement. There will be union issues with creating more nurses, so I don't expect much from the Biden people, but people should know this is the true bottleneck, (2) make sure nursing and other resources can be moved around the country as the virus will peak in different areas at different times,
(3) stop telling the public vaccines are the be-all and end-all (they are really terrific, but now that we have pills, we need to make pills important too -- speed up Paxlovid roll-out from late March to ASAP); and (4) balance the harms of NPI's against the benefits.

Why doesn't some ambitious reporter actually look at the cases and causes of natural deaths here in Milwaukee as reported by the Medical Examiner and write stories from that knowledge base instead of from Twitter fevers?
I've looked at every case of Covid as reported on that site from December 2020 till Dec. 18 2021.
https://county.milwaukee.gov/EN/Medical-Examiner/Public-Data

During all that time, anyone, anyone at all of any age, who had several systemic diseases, combinations of diabetes, heart disease, pulmonary disease, cirrhosis, cancer or morbid obesity and who was not vaccinated has been very much at risk of dying if they got any version of Covid. The next most at risk has always been those with combinations of those systemic diseases but who were vaccinated. Then came those with just one systemic disease who were not vaccinated, then those with one systemic disease who were vaccinated. Far, far behind in terms of numbers dying came the next group - healthy unvaccinated people - and none of them were children. Vaccine breakthroughs so far have not changed this pattern. The breakthroughs followed by death happen to those most at risk. Omicron will either change this pattern or it will not. Which is happening? That is the question. Forget Juicy. Wouldn't the true Omicron pattern be an amazing story for a reporter to break?

PS The story so far.
In December 2020 in Milwaukee by December 18 we had 311 deaths from all natural causes which includes Covid
In December 2021 in Milwaukee by December 18, we had 188 deaths from all natural causes which includes Covid.
So either the pattern is holding and we're OK or in the next few days Omicron will break the pattern. C'mon, Journal Sentinel. Tell it like it is.

“ While they are panicking, it is hard not to see a mild but more-infectious species of this manmade CCP virus as a blessing in its possible inoculation powers. If natural immunity is broader than mRNA immunity, then natural immunity conferred on us by mild cases of omicron CCP could be a tremendous step in defanging this coronavirus.”

There are only two credible reasons to require vaccinations. One is to protect the health care system from being swamped. But the vaccination requirements are doing more to cause this, than the vaccines themselves, by forcing health care workers unwilling to be vaccinated to be fired. The absurdity here is that a number of those fired for refusing to be vaccinated already had natural immunity, from having had the virus earlier. And, the vaccines had never been tested on those with natural immunity, since the bulk of the testing was before there was a sizable population of people with natural immunities. Plus, there is some evidence that the (ignored by public health officials) side effects from the vaccines might be worse for those with natural immunities.

The other credible justification would be to reach herd immunity. But these vaccines are leaky enough, esp since they quickly lose efficacy, that they don’t appreciably add to achieving herd immunity. It is actually having had the virus, and surviving it, that does. But even then, it is a moving target. That is because herd immunity is dependent on infectivity (R0), and with the doubling of infectivity (R0) between the ancestral variant to the Delta variant, the Herd Immunity Threshold (HIT) increased from maybe 60% to 80% of the population. But with Omicron being significantly more infectious, it is likely that HIT will have increased to maybe 90% - a level that we are unlikely to achieve even with natural immunity. Certainly not with the leaky vaccines in use.

Even if we could vaccinate enough to theoretically get to herd immunity (we can’t come close because the vaccines are so leaky that they don’t appreciably help), it still wouldn't matter. We have never eliminated a single respiratory virus through herd immunity. Never. One reason is that they typically can jump species boundaries with apparent ease. We have already found this virus present in a number of other species, including domestic dogs and cats. And these other species provide a reservoir for the virus to survive in. Since it jumped to these species from humans (assuming, as is highly likely, that the virus was fabricated by Chinese researchers in Wuhan), it can easily jump back. This is why flu viruses can never be stomped out - because different variants are always jumping back to humans from other species, and in particular, from human domesticated species (e.g. pigs and chickens).

My view is that we should probably view the Omicron variant as closer to a traditional vaccine, than a deadly threat to human life. Despite smoke and mirrors deployed by those pushing vaccines, having had the virus, having survived it, and having acquired natural immunities, appears to provide far better protection against future infection than these novel gene therapies recently redefined as vaccines. Because that is what many traditional vaccines are - weakened strains of the target virus.

Someone please show me a study that proves that masks work. I've read every study that I can find, about 15 in all. And I mean read. Not read about the studies, but read the studies. I am not an MD, but have a background in engineering and science and know how to read a scientific study.

The "best" I can find show a reduction in infections of between 3% and 11%. Worse than any Russian or Chinese vaccine. You know, the ones we make fun of.

I put "best" in quotation marks because, to the best of my recollection, none of the studies has been peer reviewed. And all seem to have significant weaknesses. Yes, even the vaunted Bangladesh study.

this is very confusing -

does "current" variant only spread by completely replace previous variants ?

are do they not all spreading through the population?
