The spectacular Thanksgiving.

Crosby’s brain has been destroyed by drugs so no surprise.

It looks enviably spartan. The gathering I went to yesterday had waay too much food. If I started in on listing all the edible offerings, I'd sound like the Bubba character in Forest Gump who went on and on about shrimp.

Where are they? The two cats must be out in the yard.

Is he proud his cranberries came from a can?

Seems sad and lonely to me. Three place setting? So no friends or family. Four dishes, at least one clearly from a can. But enough turkey for two to three times the number of people in attendance. So sandwiches today. At least he didn’t cater to any vegetarians, a chore that’s hung over my last couple Thanksgivings. Maybe that’s why he described it as spectacular.

OK I guess for a couple. My wife and I hosted this year. My daughters, sons in law and grandchildren. My brother and sister in law, one of his sons and daughters in law, and grandnieces. My mother. My sister and brother in law and yet another grandniece. Only 22 this year, usually we have 25 to 30 at whichever house we go to. Baked ham, turkey, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn casserole, sweet potato casserole, Waldorf salad, candied sweet potatoes, yeast rolls. And more desserts than the law allows. Loud, loving, incredible. I am thankful for my family.

… & simple. That’s refreshing.

Every once in a while, HBO plays the documentary movie David Crosby: Remember My Name.

I found that movie to be surprisingly interesting. Watch it if you get a chance.

No place for Neil?

Pretty big pile of cocaine there.

Dave Begley म्हणाले...

Twitter reply, “ I'm so glad you commented on this b/c I wanted to but was afraid David would yell at me. The way the lighting hits on that one plate looks like it has a pile of coke on it which makes it unintentionally hilarious. Not what u meant but maybe if I reply through you he won't be mad.”

It’s the green bean casserole that I look forward to each year. Though I understand avoiding it if you know you have an addictive personality.

We took our family to the water park/botanical garden for Thanksgiving.

I fasted for Wednesday and Thursday.

We are going to cook Turkey today. I ate a light meal last night and will have breakfast to prepare.

We might have to invite Crosby to our house next year.

Crosby has done a good job of alienating the people in his orbit.

We had spaghetti and an ice cream turkey. Mmm-hmmm!

First Thanksgiving in three decades without kids at our house this year. Made waaaay too much cornbread/sausage stuffing and garlic mashed taters. Did get a 15lb instead of 20lb bird, and got to spatchcock it for fun. My table and chairs aren't as nice as Crosby's, but my cranberries were home made, even though I'm the only one who likes 'em in my family. Today I get to render the remaining turkey stock from back, wingtips neck and giblets into more gravy to help with the revenant stuffing and taters. Gotta make sure both are finished at nearly the same time.

Sometimes the mere fact of still being alive is spectacular enough.

I blogged it because I think it really is spectacular (and I wasn't seeing the pile of cocaine at the time).

I thought it was cute. My in laws took a similar picture (just two place settings, though a lot more food and none of it came from a can). Sometimes it's just good to be home.

We were planning on having a family who just moved out here a few months ago, but one of them was sick Wednesday with flu like symptoms. I have too many kids to chance throwing up into our family, so we took them food yesterday instead. My kids were disappointed it was just us. It turned out great.

My spouse and I realized it was the first year in four that we had to make everything and host. It went really well. Some of our children were old enough that they asked to make some of the dishes under our supervision. This went really well. And I realized I could help a lot easier than I did the last time, as we have all school age children now.

Our table had more place settings and more food, but probably looked pretty full compared to most Instagram shots. If I were to take a picture, I'd probably say Thanksgiving was spectacular too. Sometimes it's getting there that's the great part.

But lol on the cocaine. That's hilarious.

Crosby has now confirmed, on his Twitter feed, that he didn’t have coke for dinner. It was the light. Allegedly.

We had 4 at my house. A nice round number.

When my husband and I were still early in our relationship, there was one Thanksgiving that we held just for ourselves - can't remember why. It was - not spectacular, but nonetheless a lovely day of cooking together, eating together, and being together.

We're with my side of the family this year, celebrating a day late because of travel timing, and (aside from the fact that the conversation yesterday already included three controversial topics, barely sidestepped) it ought to be special: the first time in years that all in our family from grandparents to grandchildren are in the same room.

My husband and I had pork hash (leftover spareribs, potatoes, onion fried with scrambled eggs). I had some squash I grew in the garden this summer. My husband hates squash. I came down with a sinus infection so no energy and big reason to social distance. Still thankful.

real cranberry relish is the easiest thing in the world to make.

boil 1/2 cup water and 1/2 orange juice. + i cup sugar.
Add a small bag or 3 cups of cranberry and simmer until they pop.
about 10 minutes.
done.

I didn't see a pile of cocaine, but did wonder if the mashed potatoes were home mashed or from Bob Evans.

I used and recommend Campbell's CoM with Roasted Garlic for the GBC. Gave it a nice zing since I can't tolerate pepper. Dad had 4 helpings.

Put some chopped onion in the dark roasting pan, and the gravy turned out brown as a saddle. The dark pan is the key, but I put greased foil directly under the bird so it won't stick. I don't baste but let the steam escape frequently for better browning, then add water back after I take off the breastbone shield.

Spartan is fine if the company is good. One of my favorite Thanksgiving dinners occurred in college, when my parents were working overseas and my siblings scattered. A friend won a ham in a local supermarket drawing, so on the spur of the moment a few of us cooked that, improvised the sides, and had the most hilarious and convivial evening of my youth. What was going to be a mac’n’cheese-and-a-paperback dinner became something that glows in memory.

The things you learn--- because of this post, I just noticed I'm blocked by David Crosby. ---Little me? I'm nobody. Can't for the life of me figure out what I did to get blocked by him.

JAORE म्हणाले...

We didn't host this year so my wife planned for less food.

Smoked turkey breast, corn bread dressing (two types), cheese straws, corn casserole, pineapple casserole, tea (sweet and unsweet), three types of pie, sweet potato casserole, and like;y some things I forgot.

Mama mode./

Michelle Dulak Thomson म्हणाले...

Enh, I made dhansak. Sort of Parsi chicken stew with lentils, vegetables, dill, mint, and a huge array of spices. Took hours, but not painful ones, unless you count cutting up the chicken. And there are only two of us.

The cookbook from which the recipe came says that dhansak isn't eaten on festive occasions, as it's traditionally served on the fourth day after a funeral. In my culturally-appropriative way, I am not specially concerned about that.

My reaction to this photo was: looks pretty normal! Just my partner and I yesterday. My childhood did not include large Holiday celebrations so I feel no loss over their absence. In fact, over time, my family of origin moved away from conforming to celebrating on specific days. Next month I visit my parents for Christmas - a week prior to the day itself. Avoiding crows, avoiding the rush is the goal.

It was just the boyfriend and I yesterday. Spare us any pity - we were perfectly content. I tend to get a whiff of envy from those caught up in complicated plans for the holidays, especially from people that really need a couple of relaxing days.

At some point in your middle age, stuffing yourself with excess food just isn't worth the discomfort later.

My partner made an ube pie for dessert that was spectacular!
