Occasionally the quote of the day comes from my Congressman, and that means something to me.

It's this, from Mark Pocan: "The whole day was a clusterfuck, right?"

Full quote: "The whole day was a clusterfuck, right? At the end of the day what we all want to do is get the president’s agenda done, and that’s what we’re going to do."

Quoted in "'Whole day was a clusterf---': Dems overcome distrust to send infrastructure bill to Biden/Democratic centrists and progressives reached a detente that cleared the $550 billion bipartisan legislation late Friday night and advanced their social spending package" (Politico)l

Why was the whole day a clusterfuck?

In the end, Pelosi only lost six Democrats on the infrastructure vote, all progressives.

Pocan is one of the progressives, and we're told that "helped negotiate the rapprochement with the moderates."

Thirteen Republicans voted in favor, giving Democrats more wiggle room on the floor.

The successful vote followed hours of painstaking negotiation between moderates and progressives that yielded a statement from caucus centrists committing to the party-line social safety net bill, if cost estimates met their projections. But the caveat in that centrist statement underscored the fragility of the underlying accord — House moderates are now staking their votes on an independent budget analysis that may take weeks to produce....

Despite the uncertainty, the centrists’ statement represents a significant detente between the Democratic caucus' two warring factions after months of ideological sparring that threatened to take Biden to the mat too -- despite Democrats having full control of Washington.

In a sign of how much trust has eroded, Congressional Progressive Caucus leader Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash) asked each of the centrists who signed the statement to look her in the eye as they committed both publicly and privately to vote for the broader spending deal after they’ve seen cost estimates, according to multiple Democrats familiar with the exchange.

She's just laying the groundwork for future rhetoric containing the phrase, "You looked me in the eye and...." I presume. I don't believe she could think politicians are the kind of people whose eyes betray them when they are lying.

Jayapal later addressed reporters outside on a wintry night...

The low temperature yesterday was 34° and we're in the middle of the fall, 7 weeks away from the winter solstice, so it's pretty silly to bring the weather into this melodramatic report. Now, I'm questioning what the standard is for "clusterfuck." I'm sure a Wisconsinite like Pocan wouldn't call that night "wintry," but what's the Wisconsin standard for "clusterfuck"? Legislators fleeing the territory while the capitol building is under seige?

Back to the Politico article:

While it’s all but certain the House will have to reckon with the social spending bill again after the Senate, Democratic leaders hope the deal Friday brings an end to their party's months-long internal standoff, which caused a string of embarrassments for leadership including two high-profile abandonments of votes after Biden visits to the Capitol.

By the time lawmakers gathered to vote around 10 p.m., tempers were running high as the House stood in recess while Democratic leaders worked to wrangle the few remaining progressive holdouts.

Rep. Brian Mast (D-Fla.) aggressively heckled Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.), shouting about a provision in a Democratic bill to hire more IRS enforcement. "You're an idiot," Carbajal shouted back at him as he walked away.

Before that a rowdy group of Republicans taunted Democrats by singing across the chamber floor a lyric synonymous with schoolyard defeat: "Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye." Democrats had mocked Republicans with the same chant in 2017, a year before the GOP lost the House after failing to repeal Obamacare....

It's funny. When progressives don't get to pass a multi-trillion boondoggle of a bill that will further push our debt beyond reality and leave a mess for all future generations, it's considered a clusterfuck. I consider that a good day.

A great day is when Congress is shut down.

There is literally no reason to have a full-time Congress. It's not needed. And left to their own devices they sit around and figure out how to lift more money from the people for pet projects, or worse- fictional schemes like powering the world via windmills.

I'm disgusted by the lot of them.

+14 swing to Republicans in the off year, narrow loss in NJ notwithstanding; first mid-term almost always a disaster for the President's party, no wonder Pelosi didn't outright deny that she was considering retiring.

Setting aside the bill itself, this Jamila Pryapal demanded that the GOP centrists who signed her bill submit to her by looking in her eyes as they signed? Which pathetic cowards did it? And what a psychologically fascistic demand.

What did the quislings who obediently looked in her eyes actually see? If they’re the least bit educated, they saw an unwavering historical fact of this stage of revolution: the first people to submit in the hopes of saving themselves are the first people whose heads get cut off.

If they had any sense at all, they saw their personal impending demise in those eyes.

The infrastructure of the United States is in need of repair no doubt. This bill won't do it. The Build Back Bill will do even less toward improving the infrastructure problem.

This bill reminds me of the "Shovel Ready Jobs" bill during the Obama administration. No public construction (roads, bridge, etc) begins in under years and usually takes a year or more to finish. So the Obama Administration ordered signs saying projects (already staffed and underway) were being done because of the bill and claimed credit when they would have happened anyway.

That wasn't true for a while. Democrats had to organize themselves more tightly in the 1990s and 2000s to come back into power. But now it's true again.

I haven't looked into the details, but I am just so sick of the Republican Party. They just won several victories this past election day. The Democrats were in complete disarray. This was a chance to push them further into oblivion and chaos. Instead, enough Repubs decide to breathe new life into the Biden administration, and give Pelosi et al something to crow about. It's so sickening, and so predictable. And this is why, notwithstanding his faults, I supported Trump. He would have thrust the dagger in.

I don't doubt there may be a few legitimate items in the bill worth passing, such as actual infrastructure improvements. They could have been passed one at a time. But this boondoggle, sucking up and wasting billions of dollars for God only knows what purposes, should have been dead on arrival. Heck, the Dems were treating Reagan's proposals that way in the 80s (but always to prevent the cutting of taxes and spending). The Republicans are a useless, hopeless party. Let's hope a new generation of leaders can rise up, who know how to play this game.

Back in the dark ages, bills were read in the rules committee, amendments were offered, there was testimony on the merits of the bill and a vote was taken. None of that is done anymore. The bill is 2000 pages and nobody seems to know what's in it. Nobody reads it. The bill is not analyzed by the Congressional Budget Office. This all began a decade ago with "Continuing Resolutions." It will end in bankruptcy, which is coming soon if not already here. 2008 was a near miss.

You're right about the "hey"s but it is in fact missing four "na"s. There are eight "na"s and three "hey"s in the lyric ("Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye"). The lyric, that is, from Steam's 1969 hit, "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." Which, btw, is not the the classic schoolyard taunt, which is merely "Na na na na." Though post-1969 (after my schoolyard taunting days) I suppose the original might have been supplanted on the playground by that whole Steam lyric.

Mike (MJB Wolf) म्हणाले...

So are Biden and the other nut cases going to give the Squad the Manchineel-Sinema treatment now for voting no? Will the squad be harassed in bathroom stalls? Will crying constituents corner them and demand the squad value their life more than the blood money they took to vote no?

I maintain that I am right about the number of "nas" and "heys" and I have relistened to the original Steam version (which I knew from memory anyway).

"Which, btw, is not the the classic schoolyard taunt, which is merely "Na na na na.""

Yes, this is a point I made in my new post on the subject. The use of the taunt began in 1977 in a stadium.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"Maybe, but when I listen to the song, to me it sounds like the 2nd hey is just drawn out by the singer, never started over as a distinct hey. I don't hear a third H."

I agree that Steam doesn't aspirate the H on the third "hey" and that that could make you hear it as "Hey, hey-ey." It's a Fonzie "hey": "'ey."

Remember the huge Bloc grants cities were given under Clinton? Part of that “infrastructure” money was used for two things: to raze ghettos sitting on expensive real estate to move the urban poor to the outer edges of the cities and make downtowns hipster paradises.

And to hand out huge wads of walking around money to the urban grifters’ nonprofits to do bullshit like “winterize” falling down houses by caulking windows and other nonsense jobs in order to keep them quiet about the massive transfer of the welfare class to rural towns nearby.

Now 35 years later, city leaders are pushing for “de gentrification” reparations, counties where the welfare folk were moved experienced horror-show-like hive collapse, and the city centers are too expensive and dangerous for anyone but the upper classes who can insulate themselves. Using electronics and gated compounds, not caulk. The hipsters are still excited by the cool bike paths and perimeter parks, but they’re sick of being mugged in them. And the middle class, which always pays the bill, are fleeing or are no more, not in Atlanta, LA, NYC, etc. in their place, illegal immigrants have flooded in to do the restaurant jobs Americans actually did used to do, so the hipsters can brag about eating diversely.

Some verisimilitude of this is always what happens, From LBJ on down to TARP, to this.
