"Nerds are winning."

I said to a trick-or-treating kid just now, and he seemed amused. I am taking a survey, giving all kids a choice between Twix — which I consider the mature choice — and Nerds Ropes — the funny choice.

The near west side of Madison has voted and the choice is clear: Nerds are winning.

I don't know what this necessarily means for society at large, but it seems to me it's a vote for fun.

Are the Nerds bigger? Kids will usually go with quantity above all else when it comes to candy...

Those are both very solid offerings. You done good!

Nerds were the winners in Ann’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Airheads won at our house.

Clear message sent: our future looks bleak

That Twix commercial is weird. I guess you like weird.

We have Pirate's Booty (some kind of popcorn thing) and Chez-Its. Also a small bowl of Snickers. My wife assured me the Pirate's Booty and Chez-Its would be the popular choice.

Bzzzzt! It's not even close.

They'll be no Snickers for me.

How could chocolate lose to anything?

Had a kid come to my door (porch light is not on) he'd have gotten a Lindt 90% cocoa dark chocolate bar. They're actually for me. Talk about the mature choice.

It's an acquired taste. Start with one square (bar has 10) and break it into quarters. So 1/40th of a bar. Otherwise it's too bitter until you're acquired the taste.

Choosing Twix is a vote for trans.

So are you really giving out Twix or just baiting cons because of that hate crime against normies commercial?

jj121957 म्हणाले...

maybe it has something to do with the latest twix commercial.

Airheads was the clear winner at our house. I don't want to know what that's a vote for.

We can all use more fun and laughter.

We seem to have hit peak fun many years ago and it’s been downhill for chuckles ever since.

I dunno, maybe the local urchins have seen Twix's despicable new ad?

That's because they don't wear princess dresses.

They both sound/seem revolting. What I wanted 55 or 60 years ago were Hershey bars, M&Ms, Reese's peanut butter cups (which I think have since been debased), and the like. Even getting away from the chocolate, something more on the order of Mary Janes.

I once offered some middle schoolers I was teaching at a 'Classical Christian' school their choice of three kinds of candy, and then pointed out with a grin that they were all picking Dum-Dums or Nerds, and none of them, or almost none, were picking Smarties. I think the score was 11-9-2 or something like that. None of them had noticed the choice was thematic.

Question a few weeks ago at our bar trivia was top ten Halloween treats from last year. I don't remember our answers (we didn't do too well overall that week though we've done better other times). I don't know if I'm reading my contemporaneous notes correctly, but it looks like the answers included:

3 Musketeers, Hershey bar, Kit Kat, Reese’s, Snickers, Twizzlers (yuck),Kit Kat.

A lot more in line with my preferences than what Althouse was handing out.

That's funny. I had Spooky Nerd Ropes as a choice and they went first. Maybe because they were full size. Then about even between Tootsie Pops (except for the brown ones, the little racists!, and yes, I'm also talking about the black kids who are just as savvy about candy as anyone else; its been known for decades that brown Tootsie Pops just suck, as it were) and Kit Kats. Bringing up the rear were the Reeses PB cups. But I was throwing several items into bags if the kids didnt take a Nerd Rope, esp the Reeses when it was obvious it was slowing down and I was going to have many extras.

55 kids last year, just 40 this year. My feeling is that people were determined to have a good time last year after all the upheaval. The shortfall this year stemmed from an absence of the older kids who usually come around in groups toward the end of the night. I wonder where they all were?

Were Chuckles an option? I haven't seen them since Boy Scout camp almost forty years ago

I've noticed a bit of a generational divide between my generation who favor chocolate-based options, and my children's generation who favor sour fruit-flavored options

I would bet she hasn't see it. It was not a TV ad.

But I can understand why a boy might think that Twix is dangerous to his health.

I had over 60 kids by 5 Pm. They started at noon here. I ran out of candy, because we never get more than 50...and I buy the BIG bars. They had their choice..Kit Kats, $100,000 bars, or twizzlers. The twizzlers were the big winner!!

Jamie म्हणाले...

I had a bowl of chocolate candies, a variety, and a bowl of fruit candies, also a variety. And a bin of those little water bottles. EVERY kid wanted a water bottle. Of the candies, fruit flavors were the clear favorite. I was flummoxed - I'd bought double the amount of chocolate.

My neighborhood is very diverse, with many expats; that might have something to do with it.

Nancy म्हणाले...

Do Twix contain trans fats?

Joe Smith म्हणाले...

We had a dinner last night so left a bowl of candy on the porch.

The good news is the bowl was still there : )

Kids know mom won’t steal the nerds.

We usually do carrots, raisins, and dried corn. Of course the kiddies aren’t human.

I’m always curious about the big Halloween party at the nudist resort up the road a ways. Not very curious. Just curious: how do nudists dress up for Halloween? David Sedaris may know.

I wasn't familiar with any Twix ads when I ordered them.

Have seen "The New Nanny" now.

I spent some time yesterday trying to understand why the bars were labeled "Two left" or "Two right." There's some kind of silliness over the issue whether the 2 sides are different. They're not, but there's humor in imagining they are.

Maybe that's like the genders.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

My idea of Twix was: standard chocolate candy bar.

I chose it because I was looking on Amazon and I wanted full-size candies that had "Prime" delivery.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Now, I feel that we earned coolness points in my neighborhood. Not that we need them!

Smarties and mini Kit-Kats here. No choice offered, every kid got scoopy handfuls of each. My big scoopy hands, that is. The kids carried grocery store type plastic carrier bags, plain paper sacks, Halloween design bags boughten or homemade, and plastic pumpkins. I hoped to get rid of all the Smarties and have Kit-Kats left over, but it didn't work out that way.
