"China’s government banned effeminate men on TV.... Broadcasters must 'resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal esthetics,' the National Radio and TV Administration said..."

"... using an insulting slang term for effeminate men — 'niang pao,' or literally, 'girlie guns.' That reflects official concern that Chinese pop stars, influenced by the sleek, fashionable look of some South Korean and Japanese singers and actors, are failing to encourage China’s young men to be masculine enough...."

The Wikipedia article "Niang pao" pointed me to "China’s Pop Idols Are Too Soft for the Party" (Foreign Policy, 2018)...
Smooth-skinned, slim-figured, and impeccably coiffed, the young male idols referred to colloquially as xiao xian rou (“little fresh meat”) have come to dominate the Chinese pop cultural landscape over the last decade.
... and "CIA turned our celebrities into ‘sissy pants’, says Chinese Academy of Social Sciences" (London Times, 2019):
Beijing has accused the CIA of secretly fuelling the trend for effeminate or “sissy” celebrities in China.... A Cass report accuses the CIA of beginning its campaign to “brainwash” Asian men in Japan in 1962 with the foundation of the Johnny & Associates talent agency. It claims the agency’s founder, Johnny Kitagawa, was “loyal to the Americans rather than the Japanese” and colluded with the CIA to use “entertainment to brainwash the Japanese people . . . to weaken the male temperament of Japanese society”.
Since then, the Chinese report, titled “Do you know how hard the CIA is working”, says, weakened male temperament has spread to other parts of east Asia. Beijing’s experts compared China’s entertainment industry, which “advocates feminine male artists”, to Hollywood, where “male stars are not like this, most of them are tough guys”.
The biggest celebrities in mainland China often are imported from the K-Pop industry in South Korea.... An editorial in the state-run Xinhua news agency derided xiao xian rou as “sissy boys” unfit for the task of “helping our nation reach its renaissance”.
Last year, Xinhua, the state news agency, lambasted singers in a new group, New F4, as “sissy pants” and said they were “not men, but not women”. “They look androgynous and wear make-up. They are slender and weak,” the influential opinion columnist using the pen name Xinshiping wrote. “The impact this sick culture will have on our young generation is immeasurable.”

I think this is terrific if true.

But I don't believe the Cia is that competent. Not that they haven't they try all sorts of stupid stuff which seldom works.

I guess it's settled science ...

Gotta follow the science ...

I love the accusation about the CIA turning Chinese men into sissy pants. The CIA is way too busy ginning up imaginary domestic right-wing extremists to do push a rainbow agenda in China.

In a one child society where girl babies were aborted, one wonders if the only way young men can get any sort of sexual attention is by acting girlie.

Ya gotta wonder if the CIA tried this in Afghanistan. Also, how does it actually work? In America, I think the sissification started with Donovan, though the CIA likely was not involved, as it had its hands full with COINTELPRO. etc.

Considering that the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences apparently is an influential Chinese government organization, accusing the CIA of being behind this trend (if it is actually a trend) is not a laughing matter. Regardless of how clumsy or silly it looks from the USA, it is propaganda aimed at us, and it is not too hard to speculate at the purposes of such propaganda.

The "New F4"? Has to be a "Meteor Garden" reference, in which case, what did they expect?

This is the most effective thing the CIA has accomplished in decades.

Are shorts allowed? Or are those sissy pants?

Chinese leaders might be worried about social problems flowing from "bad culture". But they are too late & can't fix the real problem.

Per Wikipedia, the male/female ratio age 15-24 is 1.17, 7th highest in the world. (Of the top six countries, five are Islamic, four are in the Middle East.) So for every 100 young women, there are 17 unpairable, no way, no how, young men. Perhaps the chickens, er roosters, are coming home to riot. China wouldn't want to admit that, but pop culture doesn't cancel itself.

At some point, Xi will decide it's not the fault of the CIA but Taiwan.

Tina Trent म्हणाले...

Yeah, we’ll, maybe if they weren’t a sorry commie totalitarian dictatorship they could produce hotties like Chow Yun-fat, the sexiest Asian man in the world and top five overall.

By a mile, or however many kilometers that is.

Xi was doing so well getting American lefties to do his bidding, kowtow to CCP propaganda, beg for climate change support, ignore Muslim oppression, forget about Hong Kong, make the U.S. weaker--and then this. He really stepped in it, didn't he? He'll feel their righteous wrath now.

Whatever will the Chinese Communist Party do when it realizes the Chinese Communist Party is the very worst influence on the Chinese population, ever, in all of history?

Believe this or not, but I was recently thinking of the phrase "sissy pants"!

IIRC it was used--with plenty of reason--by Zorak the Evil Mantis to describe Space Ghost's costume.

Uncanny.

China appears to be eschewing a peaceful and fabulous option for dealing with its excess of young men.

According to our resident pro-marxist LLR Chuck, we won't really know what to make of these masculinity requirements or proper military tactics until we consult with that paragon of both masculinity and military acumen, Mr Kellyanne (George) Conway, whom LLR Chuck has offered up as a powerful "go to" source for analysis on these topics.

Now, any normal person would not think that Lincoln Man-Boy Project tiger laddie George Conway would be a good choice for this, but then again, they aren't our gin and tonic pickled LLR Chuck.

Many Americans automatically assume that Communists are "progressive". And there is always a temptation on the left to think of Communists as cool.

This is evidence against both.
