"A few years ago, after Mr. Probst noticed some contestants blaming producers for their 'bad edit,' he wrote a 'Survivor' mission statement that he and his team still consult."

"'Our job is to tell the most authentic version of each person’s story in an electric, visceral, dramatic, and entertaining way,' it reads. 'But it must be authentic.'... Authenticity, 'Survivor' fans have come to know, means warts and all. It means the show can’t, per Mr. Probst’s directive, change the intent of someone’s words during editing. It’s meant watching one contestant demand another remove her fake teeth during a tribal council as payback for a blindside. It’s even meant watching a gay contestant out a trans tribemate, equating his choice not to disclose his transness with deception."

ADDED: The top-rated comment over there:
No mention of Probst’s mentor Mark Burnett foisting Trump on us, and getting rich , via his other show the Apprentice. Don’t know about you but that proximity to evil would bother me. Like having your tv parents also make napalm in their other job. Maybe being far away in Fiji helps.

Donald Trump is hated by Democrats because:

1. He's an apostate. He switched from being a Democrat to being a Republican.

2. He didn't go to an Ivy league school.

3. He's from Queens! Quelle horreur!

4. He's a business man instead one of the favored careers: NGO, politician, "journalist", activist.

5. His policies were successful.

I'm guessing that > 80% of the people who updated that comment were big The Apprentice fans, back in the day

Trump owns the NYT commenters.

They always have to make it about Trump.

can we stop at some point with all the TDS. Compared to the mess we have today, Trump was a walk in the park. Ann - why do you pick out such a stupid comment to promote?

Paddy O म्हणाले...

I never watched an episode of the Apprentice. I'll bet there's a fairly large overlap of folks who watched it. And kept the ratings high who now blame others for foisting him into popularity. Our passions have fashions too.

Joe Smith म्हणाले...

Not sure anyone can blame Burnett for Trump...it was a very big hit TV show. Somebody wanted to watch it.

I loved it when it first started, but the celebrity version morphed into 'who had richer friends to call to spend $100k on a hot dog.'

"proximity to evil"

I get it, they despise DJT. But what, exactly, makes him "evil"?

I mean, he helped keep brown and black people from coming to racist Amerikkka. He got us a vaccine right quick. As far as we know, he didn't drop missiles on innocent Afghans. So?

Making it slightly more likely that some babies will not be aborted at some point in the future? I guess that's it.

Those NYT commenters crave that dopamine rush from the "likes" they know they will get with a negative comment about Trump. I wonder if it becomes a game - how do I connect this topic to The Donald?

Howard म्हणाले...

Anyone who lives in the United States and enjoys our fabulous lifestyle of the Rich and infamous is closely proximal to the evil that the top New York times rated commenter refers to. We all benefit from American imperialism. Trump is a giant nothing Burger in that hole equation.

I am sure of these liberal progressives believe that they are deftly walking through the raindrops living a wholistically sustainable lifestyle that benefits in no way from The Machine.

I liked Jeff Probst better when he hosted a viewer mailbag show on the old FX channel. He was always joking around and showing his personality, unlike his role on Survivor. Anyone else remember that? It was on at 12:30 AM, live, because that was FX's gimmick the first couple of years.

Was that top rated commenter "Chuck?" Just wondering.

All roads lead to Trump. It really is a bizarre phenomenon. One flea after another expressing disdain for the dog in more and more demented terms--if it wasn't for the dog they'd have nothing to say.

As to why the Prof selects the morsels she does, I'm only thankful that she troubles herself to confirm my suspicions every day.

For myself, I didn't know about or care a whit for Donald Trump or The Apprentice. We did watch The Survivor for about three seasons--it was a creative leap for TV and deserved the success. I might watch it now if I could win a big prize.

Kai Akker म्हणाले...

Scott, Mary Beth, right-o. NYT GIGO.

Survivor got woke last season or two. Phony baloney. I had watched some or all of every season back from Richard Hatch was it, that first gay guy winner who ended up in jail iirc. Done.

“ Don’t know about you but that proximity to evil would bother me.”

Really? And just how bothered are you by your proximity to voting in the guy who gave the go ahead to drone strike 7 innocent Afghan children? No, sorry, that evil was not Trump. That evil is the evil of incompetence and the evil negligence—the evil of Joe Biden and every person, crooked or not, who put him in power. Fuck Joe Biden and if you’re the horse Joe Biden rode in on well then fuck you too.

I believe it is time to proclaim Godwin's Law Redux - as the length of a thread proceeds on a newsgroup the probability of laying blame for any and all problems, no matter how seemingly unrelated, on Trump approaches one.

I like the fact that Bob Geldof was one of the partners in the initial launch of Survivor. Bob has never had to choose between charity and business. Live Aid made him famous beyond the Boomtown Rats, and helped with both record sales and contacts in the business world. Encouraging investment in Africa tied in with a firm that takes a percentage of new investments, and Geldof has been involved in setting up a tax haven in Mauritius.

So Probst post is clickbait for Trump comments? 'Cause folks here don't care much about Survivor? Had a colleague who had prior experience as contestant around a decade ago, but we never discussed it.

Mark Burnett produced that reality show about the chef Rocco something -- I forget his last name -- trying to open a new restaurant. That show was eyes-widening great. The characters of Rocco, his mother, and his investor partner -- just, wow! Few scripted shows come near it for drama. I'd even say, the best new novel I read that year, wasn't a novel and I didn't read it: it was for maybe the only time in my life, a tv show.

Mike (MJB Wolf) म्हणाले...

Who apologizes for making the number one show on a network. These NYT commenters are now irrationally angry at the millions who watched TV back in the day? I mean does that guy know that every single progressive hero of his once kissed Donald’s ass and begged for his support, definitely including Clinton Pelosi Schumer Coumo and on and on? Don’t those politicians owe Americans a mea culpa and sincere apology? Should not they all refund campaign donations to Trump now that NYT readers consider him a non-person? Do they ever consider the basic inhumanity that they project in their comments? Have they no shame?

Meade म्हणाले...

Howard, why do you think natural functions of a woman's body is a good way to insult a man? Are women inferior, making menstruation a sign of inferiority? Do you have a problem with older (post-menopausal) women?

Please explain your bigoted, sexist thinking where you think this kind of insult is okay.

Lurker21 म्हणाले...

Without my glasses, I read that as "Mr. Protest."

Maybe that's a marketable idea now: a one stop, comprehensive app to handle all of your protest and cancel culture needs.

The "Mr." will have to be changed to something more politically correct, but it's hard to say what.

Why is it that the people who are forever telling us what their pronouns are never say which titles they prefer?

Before I know whether to refer to you as "zie" or "xie" I have to know how to address you.
