"We instantly recognize the financial despair and destruction this will cause our community. We brace ourselves for the crisis this will likely cause."

That's a statement from the Adult Performance Artists Guild, quoted in "Five OnlyFans Creators on the Company’s Porn Ban and What Comes Next" (NY Magazine).

From one of the "creators":
After working as a stripper for six years, I needed a break. A few years ago, I was feeling really sick and dealing with fibromyalgia, a chronic illness. I was burned out.... I like the freedom being able to work online provides. If I don’t want to be touched or be around people, I don’t have to. I don’t have to put on a fake personality and constantly sell myself to strangers. There’s an element of safety as well, since I can do this from my home. The sex-work industry can be really dangerous.... On Twitter, a lot of people were celebrating this news, saying we’re whores who should get a real job. There’s just a lot of vilification.... I don’t have a large financial cushion, so I’ll probably have to go back to the club. I’ve been paying my own bills since I was 18, and I also support my boyfriend. I’m scared to strip again because I’m not that healthy. I have a lot of chronic pain. I was just diagnosed with asthma today, so trying to do aerial stunts is not going to be easy. I’ll have to bedazzle my inhaler and take it to work. I don’t think I’m going to be able to do eight hours in heels....

You can see that she intended the line "and I also support my boyfriend" to increase the sympathy for her.

You know how people do “Is it real or is it The Onion?”

This one cries out for “Is it real or is it Lazlo?”

Seems to me like the perfect opportunity for a sex worker or workers to create their own version of Only Fans and set it up to only accept cryptocurrency.

Jaq म्हणाले...

when Tumblr ditched adult content in 2018, its valuation dropped from $1 billion to $3 million; now it’s irrelevant.

It seems like Only Fans should fight for what they believe in and find other payment methods and investors, but it's almost like this country is ruled by a tiny moneyed elite that leverages de facto monopolies to enforce its views.

It's okay if she wants to increase the sympathy.

I'm sure this is a blow to many, and I disagree with making safe and contactless adult sex work more difficult, but OnlyFans has been around a short time. I hope those in the top whatever percent saved some of their money, and that all remember how to do whatever they did two years ago.

And, yes, OF is ending themselves. Why would anyone pay for OnlyFans after this?

God of the Sea People म्हणाले...

I find it hard to believe that some other platform won't step up to meet the demand for these services. Porn isn't some new entrant to the online marketplace. If OnlyFans doesn't want to host it, surely there are many other providers that will.

Ahh Strippers! what Would us men do without them to pay our bills!!

This is just one more example of why humanity should not become dependent on any particular platform for their income or personal/mental well being- OnlyFans, Twitter, Althouse, SnapFace can and will alter the terms of engagement at their discretion...

....but when the going gets tough the tough get creative! Possible workaround: For women too proud or broken for stripping or sex work you can fly under the radar of the YouTube censors while modeling clothes, swimsuits, or lingerie in your 'try on haul'. Garner an audience to collect some YouTube cash then direct your audience to your paid Patreon site for a paid bit of the racier stuff...

Glad I could help...

Putting "...saying we're whores" in close proximity to "I also support my boyfriend " is an unforced error of William Howard Taft proportions.

A joke heard as a working musician in my adult lifetime (though not in this century):

Q: You know what strippers do with their boyfriends on the way to work?
Me: No, what?
A: Drop them off at band practice.

Strippers do better than musicians on Onlyfans, I suppose. This makes me think about the immutable nature of the human animal.

I have not yet been able to understand this decision by the company. I've never subscribed to anything, but I understood the business model (ahem) was basically to unyoke a person selling the image of their body from a centralized place of business - a porn company, a strip club, a modeling agency, etc.

While some may mock the people who relied upon this income stream, I view this as like any other form of income suddenly evaporating. Almost like an eviction moratorium, without the governmenty-theft element. It will push some people into desperation and therefore desperate acts. Regardless if that's fueled by good or bad decisions.

But also, why wouldn't this immediately spurn 1-5 replacement companies offering the exact same service as the original.

In other words, this will be Silk Road & Silk Road 2.0.

Althouse writes, "You can see that she intended the line "and I also support my boyfriend" to increase the sympathy for her."

Abusive relationships. Sexual martyrdom. A little originality in these sob stories would certainly go a long way.

The whole thing is so trite and packaged, that it makes me wonder whether it's a metafictional bit of adult performance art.

Two comments. The world is huge. There are more different ways to earn a living than you can take breaths.
And...you need a new boyfriend.

...and it's a little discouraging it doesn't occur to these supposedly entrepreneurial minded women they could build their own platform rather than continued dependency on the desires of others.

Evergreen and across all industries, this observation is...

"I support my boyfriend" or "I support my girlfriend" and I always, always think: You need to change SOs. Who needs an un-working SO that is little more than a millstone around your neck?

How many hits can I take before it’s impossible to bounce back? I recently got divorced, became sick, and now the platform that I use to make a living is potentially going to cut me out. I don’t have a large financial cushion, so I’ll probably have to go back to the club. I’ve been paying my own bills since I was 18, and I also support my boyfriend.

She played a stupid game and won stupid prizes. Bad decisions should have painful consequences, and getting divorced and shacking up with some deadbeat is a bad decision. Not figuring out a backup career other than stripping/sex shows is a bad decision.

It's like the old joke, "it may be that your purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others."

First, the pithy comment: The new Puritanism continues.

I'm caught up with Bari Weiss's podcast (except the one that just dropped 3 hours ago about Lab Leak Lies). Of them all, I was least impressed with America's Sex Recession because I think Bari missed the mark on her question of why, particularly by only interviewing a woman sex worker. I'll admit the worker came close (Bari came close in her introduction, yet only got half of it), but Bari I think missed it because of her self-indulgence in the story. Still, I'm very impressed by the podcast and even this story was better than most news that is out there.

For those that don't understand why I mention this; Bari Weiss interviews an OnlyFans content creator. The woman explains in sufficient detail the value of that business to her in both monetary and emotional aspects. They even discuss OnlyFans success considering much of the general content can be had for free elsewhere on the internet. That part of the discussion is the heart of the subject, and it is clear that such content isn't available for free. I recommend listening to the podcast.

It is amazing that such a financially successful business is actually closing because it wasn't able to up sale its content. It seems absurd. However, if it truly is a financial success, and it the podcast is right about the business model and the value of its content; then creators should be able to find a way to continue making money. Which makes me wonder what is really going on with this decision?

There are other sites and some Hub sites setting themselves up to take up the OnlyFans business. Some sites are going bitcoin and other non traditional payment methods.

The big thing here is that the payment processors are strong arming sites into 'cleaning up their act'. While a few more of these sort of sites are likely to be hit, the next targets will be the bigger social media sites like twitter and Facebook, which either have no or very spotty adult content moderation. As some adult content providers will point out, Facebook and Twitter are where actual child exploitation take place, not sites that are required to keep 2257 records.

William म्हणाले...

She's thinking of "bedazzling" her inhaler and taking it to work. Well and good, and I don't mean to criticize her creative choices, but I'm not sure bedazzling is the way to go. Sequins are kind of tacky. Perhaps outfitting the inhaler in black lace would be the better choice

Dude1394 म्हणाले...

The democrat party became sex repressed so quickly I barely noticed. Good grief we need some alternative payment portals.

I was surprised to learn that she has fibromyalgia, which is overwhelmingly a disease of morbidly obese women. And now she has asthma as well? I would strongly urge her to find another line of work. Like Temujin says above, there are innumerable things to do for a living!

Mr Wibble म्हणाले...

I assume part of what is driving this is the intention of eventually using these tactics against gun manufacturers.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

This will work out for OnlyFans as spectacularly as Tumblr's same actions did 3 years ago. I really don't understand the thought process of the executives of these companies- they are literally shooting themselves in the head at the behest of the banking system. At some point, someone needs to sue the banks themselves for anti-trust violations, because the banks are colluding with each other in these actions against their customers.

Leland म्हणाले...

Recommended reading for Bari Weiss.

Tom म्हणाले...

Being a libertarian means that sex workers are part of some of the libertarian Facebook groups I’ve joined over the years. One of those sex workers said today they hope the women who called for this ban realizes she’ll have to go back to $&@ing their husbands.

Maybe this wasn’t quite thought all the way through.

Iman म्हणाले...

Call me naive, but when I se… er, read of or hear women who are in this line of work, I always think, that’s someone’s mother, daughter, sister, etc.
