About Trump referring to Patton; it is of course reminiscent of Trump's having invoked the name of General John J. Pershing.
It was Trump who repeatedly told stump-speech stories about General Pershing (commanding forces in the Philippines during the Moro Rebellion) purportedly ordering that Muslim prisoners be lined up, and for American armed forces to execute them in a firing squad with bullets that had been dipped in pigs' blood as an ultimate religious/cultural violation of those prisoners. In Trump's telling, they would let one of the prisoners go, as a witness to others in the Muslim community.
Trump loved the story so much that he told it repeatedly and animatedly. There's lots of video.
And it was a false story. But more than being just false, it was one of those things where Trump, in his eagerness to display the personal toughness that was otherwise absent from his life, went overboard in ways that he didn't even understand.

Most modern intelligence tests are based the relative position of a person’s score among people of the same age, rather than on the basis of this formula, but the idea of an intelligence “ratio” or “quotient” provides a good description of the score’s meaning.
Intelligence changes with age. A 3-year-old who could accurately multiply 183 by 39 would certainly be intelligent, but a 25-year-old who could not do so would be seen as unintelligent.
On a Howard Stern show in 2006 at age 60, Donald Trump could not correctly multiply 17 x 6, first answering "eleven twelve" then changing to "one twelve" instead of correctly responding "102" after several guesses.
So if Donald's mental age is 10 (picked because he certainly should have learned or memorized his multiplications by that age) and his chronological age was then 60, his age-adjusted IQ equaled (10 divided by 60 times 100) a whopping 17 and it all goes downhill from there.

“ madAsHell said...I've never seen a President at rallies, or making public comments after their term. It undermines the current President.”
But then, those better behaved former Presidents didn’t have their reelection bid stolen from them very openly and blatantly, when the election officials in those 5-6 Dem controlled inner cities, almost in Union, threw out the Republican poll watchers, carted in truckloads of bogus ballots, and counted them over again, until they were able to add enough votes to Biden’s total to put him ahead, and keep him there. It was blatant. It was egregious. And it is why Biden is in the White House, and people are dying in Afghanistan, and streaming over our souther border.
Think of the absurdity. Trump played by the rules. The Democrats didn’t. He wanted to March the FBI in and arrest the poll workers who had been video recorded running the Illegal ballots through the counter multiple time. Nope. The FBI was busy setting up their 1/6 “insurrection”. Courts all the way up to the Supreme Court told him, and his supporters, “shut up, we don’t need any stinking evidence”. He was told to meekly accept having had the election stolen from him. And now he is being told to shut up and don’t criticize the performance of the guy who stole the Presidency from him. Nope. Doesn’t work that way. If you want Trump and his supporters to play nice, then don’t steal elections, and tell your opponent to shut up and take it.
And, to the leftists here - don’t bother protesting, and pretending that the election wasn’t stolen. We know better. Pretending that it didn’t happen just makes you look delusional.
Hopefully not too far off topic. Speaking of Americans making a difference in refugee situations when WWI started in August 1914 seventy thousand of Americans were trapped in Europe and England. They not only could not get home, many had no money to even feed themselves since banks were not accepting anything but gold and silver.
"The first of his [Herbert Hoover’s, as a private citizen] war calls to service came just as he was preparing to return to America from London where he had brought his family from California to spend the school vacation of 1914. Their return passage was engaged for the middle of August. But the war came on, and with it his first relief undertaking. It was only the trivial matter--trivial in comparison with his later undertakings--of helping seventy thousand American travelers, stranded at the outbreak of the war, to get home.
These people, rich and poor alike, found themselves penniless and helpless because of the sudden moratorium. Letters of credit, travelers' checks, drafts, all were mere printed paper. They needed real money, hotel rooms, steamer passages, and advice. And there was nobody in London, not even the benevolent and most willing but in this respect powerless American ambassador who could help them. At least there seemed none until Hoover transferred the "relief" which had automatically congested about his private offices in the "city" during the first two days to larger headquarters in the Hotel Savoy.
He gathered together all his available money and that of American friends and opened a unique bank which had no depositors and took in no money, but continuously gave it out against personal checks signed by unknown but American-looking people on unknown banks in Walla Walla and Fresno and Grand Rapids and Dubuque and Emporia and New Bedford. And he found rooms in hotels and passage on steamers, first-class, second-class or steerage, as happened to be possible. Now on all these checks and promises to pay, just $250 failed to be realized by the man who took a risk on American honesty to the extent of several hundred thousand dollars."
That passage is from Vernon Kellogg's bio of Herbert Hoover. It is a great read but ends in about 1920. Kellogg was Hoover's chief of staff/right hand man during his efforts to bring food relief to a starving Europe (Esp Belgium). First as a private citizen, then, when Wilson got us into the war as head of America's official relief program. Hoover probably saved 20 million European civilians from starvation. He was a true American hero and gets way too little credit for this or for helping thousands get home in 1914.
Yes, the same Herbert Hoover who later became president. Note that, until US entry in the war in 1917, it was all private money and private effort.
John henry said... Pershing real crime was wasting 116m American lives in less than 6 months of combat in ww1
Well okay then!
That part didn't get into the Trump stump speeches. Funny how that happened.
Too bad PDJT couldn't negotiate a deal with the Kaiser. Cuz PDJT is a great negotiator and he would have negotiated a great deal. Maybe the best deal in history. A deal better than any deal anybody had ever seen before. Grown men, really tough men who had been in the trenches would have been crying, saying "Mr. President you have given us a deal the likes of which we have never seen."
If you got your comment published in this thread but later it got unpublished, the reason was that I wanted on-topic comments. The topic here is the specific quote, so it's not a dumping ground for other things he said in the speech or other things other people were saying about these other topics. There is a café post this morning. If you want to introduce new topics, go there.
Calculation is not by itself a measure of intelligence, nor is it a mark of mathematical ability. It if were $2 disposable calculators would be counted as examples of AI. Furthermore, there are many examples of grievously handicapped persons unable to function at the level expected of a normal eight-year-old child, who are nonetheless capable of astounding feats of mental calculation.
That an allegedly insightful person would make that fundamental error is surprising.
If George S. Patton, Jr. was in chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff instead of milk-toast Milley, the 82nd and 101st Airborne would be back in Kabul, along with the 10th Mountain Division. The Taliban wouldn't know what hit them. George would be standing in a Humvee, telling the soldiers to "Move It! We don't have all day to save our fellow Americans. The Taliban are going to be sorry they came down out of the hills. They're going to wind up as piles of goo when we get to Kabul. Move it, move it, move it!"
Ol' George would be there, in the second wave maybe, but he would be leading the relief effort, not sitting in some fancy Pentagon office, bemoaning on how we can't do anything because we don't have the proper forms and paperclips.
And it was a false story Cool. Now do Russian Collusion and 6 January Insurrection. Trump is interesting because he says what the truth is as he sees it. Whether or not you believe is up to you. But it's always ratings gold.
As for Eisenhower wearing only 3 ribbons mentioned by Joe Smith above, uniform regulations when I was in required you wear at least the top 3 awards on dress uniforms. Wearing all of them if you had >3 was optional.
It was expected at formal occasions you would wear all of them.
Trump being Trump... and I love that. No half steps... no parsing of words... spits it out like it is.
And that is why I voted for him TWICE. And I'd vote for him again.
He would never make the mistakes Biden and Harris have.
Do any of you remember $1.50-$1.80 gas? Secure Southern Border? Stable Afghanistan? Low inflation? Energy independence? Allies respecting us? Enemies fearing us?
That was less than a year ago... until Biden came along. Now it's all turned to shit.
Joe Smith: "I saw a photo of Eisenhower the other day wearing what looked like his everyday uniform.
I don't think he had more than 3 ribbons.."
It is, or was, common practice for senior officers with extensive awards ti wear just the top most row of their awards which are the highest level PERSONAL awards (as opposed to unit awards or simply "I was there" awards).
It is common for the most personally accomplished officers to do that....and you will notice that NONE of this generations flag officers do that.
Actually, Chuck, If Donald Trump had been president in 1916, the US never would have gotten into WWI and those 116m Americans would not have died.
Had we not gotten into WWI, there probably would not have been any WWII and another 400m+ Americans would not have died there.
Had WWII happened anyway, and had Donald Trump been elected in 1936, or even 1940, we never would have gotten involved in it. We had absolutely no business in either war. We elected 2 Democrat presidents who SPECIFCALLY PROMISED if elected to keep us out of both wars while secretly doing everything possible to drag us into them. (FDR because he could not figure out any other way to end the Depression)
We also later elected a Democrat president who SPECIFICALLY PROMISED if elected to keep us out of Vietnam, too.
Joe Smith said... I saw a photo of Eisenhower the other day wearing what looked like his everyday uniform. I don't think he had more than 3 ribbons.
Yep, he'd only wear, like 3 of his EIGHTY-THREE medals (i'm counting each Oak leaf, as a separate medal... 'cause they ARE Of course; SIXTY of them, are from foreign countries. I'll let y'all decide what to make of them.. STILL that makes about (not sure i counted right) 23 medals from the US of A None for Valo, though
Gadfly? I realize you're already Not the sharpest ho on the corner... According to YOU, you should compare people to people of Their own age group. But, have you ever dealt with any 60 year olds? Did They seem as sharp as a 10 year old? What about people in their 70's?
I'm Not saying that you're intellectually chalendged; but i *AM* saying that you're a lying sack of horse stuff.
Too bad PDJT couldn't negotiate a deal with the Kaiser. Cuz PDJT is a great negotiator and he would have negotiated a great deal. Maybe the best deal in history. 8/22/21, 2:34 PM
Actually, it wouldn't have been terribly hard. There would have been twin swords of Damocles hanging over Germany then- communist revolution or a flood of American soldiers. Conversely, merely the suggestion that America would let the war continue to stalemate would terrify the English and French back to the table. Woodrow Wilson tried to reshape Europe instead of guide it to peace- well, I say he did. It was mostly Edith Wilson for a while back there, and his project collapsed in flames shortly thereafter.
As for smoothbrain pederasts trying to whitewash Pershing just to score points on Trump, it is to laugh. The primary reason I disbelieve Trump's story is the claim of Americans letting a few rebels live. Torture, massacres, concentration camps, and looting were not just prevalent, but usually considered meritorious- at least within the theatre. At home, virtue signaling in the media was considered sufficient to cover up the grotesque (and effective) conduct that crushed the Moro Rebellion.
Read what the US was doing to Japan for the 2-3 years prior to Pearl Harbor.
The Japanese felt that they had no choice but to push back and PH was the result.
One could argue whether or not FDR was consciously trying to push them into declaring war on us. I think he was, others may disagree. But it seems in arguable that they felt pushed into a corner and needed to respond.
I was thinking more of WWI and WWII European edition. There is is much more obvious and well documented what FDR was trying to do. Read his corrspondance with Churchill, for example. See his "Sink on Sight" declaration of German shipping. See his invasion of Iceland. See his gifting of war material to Britain. and so on.
It took a couple of years but he finally pushed Germany hard enough that they had no choice but to declare war on us. Then FDR could go to Congress and say "Mommy, he hit me first!"
The US had no, none, zip, nada, interest in getting involved in WWII and the reason FDR got elected was because the American people fucked up. They trusted him to keep his main campaign promise. No involvement in European war.
Stop naming other commenters and making personal attacks on them. Address substance. If you do both, I have to delete the whole thing. No one wants to read personal insults. It’s just stupid.
I ought to have added that you appear to be complaining specifically about people who have mentioned Chuck. Considering that he is (was) "poster most likely to be voted off the island by Ann Althouse" on several occasions, I am perplexed.
Myself, I am mighty curious about John henry's "116m" Americans killed in 6 months during the Great War. IIRC, that was over half the US population in 1917-18. But I mustn't mention him by name, yes?
No one wants to read personal insults. It’s just stupid.
Let’s see whether we can parse what the (retired) law professor is trying to convey. It was, presumably, acceptable for Chuck to write that Trump supporters are morons, because that’s not personal. Responding to the insult by naming Chuck, particularly, and casting aspersions on his mental capacity (lack thereof), marital status of his parents (and whether they were even members of homo sapiens), and his probable chances of salvation in the afterlife are out of bounds, because of the personal aspect. But by extension, if one were to slam NeverTrumpers, as a class that just happens to include Chuck among numerous others, as slime-sucking maggots blinded by personal hatred at Trump’s disinterest in sending some graft their way due of their self-evident incompetence, that would be okay? Just trying to get some clarity here.
Of course, they had a lot of trouble with Patton. He a couple of time almost got fired. But maybe it was different because there was an important war on and they really needed him.
@Big Mike (if I may be permitted to address a poster directly)
I believe our hostess is trying to cut down on the person to person name calling and such that tends to grind the discussion to a halt. As someone who has engaged in such behavior, I won't try to claim to be the only virgin in the whore house. Just the same, I have also walked away from threads that devolved into digital food fights. So she certainly has a point.
You are correct though, that some folks here like to paint all those who disagree with them as some subspecies to be ridiculed and laughed at. This snark doesn't convince anyone of anything, and really isn't meant to. It's meant to disrupt the conversation, and it is more successful than it should be.
“ Of course, they had a lot of trouble with Patton. He a couple of time almost got fired. But maybe it was different because there was an important war on and they really needed him.”
Just think of what might have happened if he had been court marshaled and thrown out, when it came time to race across France, not giving the Germans the time to retreat in good order, or when he pivoted elements of his 3rd Army to race north and relieve Bastogne. Could the Germans have broken through, and split the Allied armies? We will never know, because Eisenhower knew that he needed this fighting general, just as Lincoln needed Grant.

"Donald Trump is just dumb."
It's not your IQ, it's what you do with it.
Hundreds of millions of dollars. A smoking hot wife. President of the United States.
If he's as dumb as you think, then he's certainly an over-achiever...
Maybe ot but let's also remember lbjs silver star.
Look at any picture of him in a suit cote. He is wearing the civilian version of the medal in every single one.
Caro quoted someone as saying it was the least deserved. Most displayed medal ever awarded.

Gadfly writes, "Trump is just dumb."
That gadfly would is not.
And it was a false story
Cool. Now do Russian Collusion and 6 January Insurrection.
Trump is interesting because he says what the truth is as he sees it. Whether or not you believe is up to you. But it's always ratings gold.
So the average 60 year old is 50 smarter than the average 10 year old? Only someone with an IQ of 17 would think that’s how IQ works.
It’s worse, quaestor. It’s trivially false that IQ increases linearly with age.

Yep, he'd only wear, like 3 of his EIGHTY-THREE medals (i'm counting each Oak leaf, as a separate medal... 'cause they ARE
Of course; SIXTY of them, are from foreign countries. I'll let y'all decide what to make of them..
STILL that makes about (not sure i counted right) 23 medals from the US of A
None for Valo, though
Trump's entirely correct about that
"We had absolutely no business in either war."
I don't know about WWI, but I'm pretty sure the Japanese got a vote on whether we would be in WW2 or not.

Chris Lopes,
Read what the US was doing to Japan for the 2-3 years prior to Pearl Harbor.

"Actually, it wouldn't have been terribly hard."
Since Hitler was the one who declared war on us, it might have been harder than you think.
Ann, to whom are you speaking? Or are we all supposed to guess?
I ought to have added that you appear to be complaining specifically about people who have mentioned Chuck. Considering that he is (was) "poster most likely to be voted off the island by Ann Althouse" on several occasions, I am perplexed.
Myself, I am mighty curious about John henry's "116m" Americans killed in 6 months during the Great War. IIRC, that was over half the US population in 1917-18. But I mustn't mention him by name, yes?
'As for smoothbrain pederasts trying to whitewash Pershing just to score points..."
I saw Smoothbrain Pederasts in '78 open for The Doobie Brothers at The Fillmore.
