That's the lengthy headline for a "news analysis" piece by Peter Baker in the NYT.
Had you been under the impression that the Biden presidency was premised on empathy and competence? I'd never gotten that impression, and I did a search of my blog archive for "Biden" and "empathy," and everything that came up was about the press shielding Biden from scrutiny, saying he's got empathy and (of course) Trump does not. I haven't done a search, but I'll hypothesize that running on competence worked the same way. The press touted Biden as a remedy for the disease they'd been scaring us about for years — Trump.
And so Biden wasn't tested. He was promoted. Did we ever believe in his "competence and empathy"? Are anybody's "fundamental premises" getting undermined? That headline — however much it questions Biden — engages in the same unexamined touting of Biden that got him elected in the first place. He never demonstrated competence and empathy! People just hoped he had it, because they thought Trump didn't have it, and the press encouraged them to indulge in those beliefs and hopes.
I'm questioning assumptions contained in the headline. The article itself is questioning Biden's competence and empathy, which I think ought to have been done when he was running for office. From the article:
At points, the president has evinced little sense of the human toll as the Taliban swept back to power. Asked about pictures of fleeing Afghans packed into planes and some even falling to their death after trying to sneak aboard, Mr. Biden interrupted. “That was four days ago, five days ago,” he said, when in fact it was two days earlier and hardly made less horrific by the passage of a couple of sunsets....
Biden — or his handlers — knew he'd be asked about that, and he said something that was not only bluntly callous but wrong in the way that is most easily proved wrong — numerically.
Meanwhile, American citizens are called upon to care deeply about things that happened over a hundred years ago and to work diligently on their psyche if they think it would be best to look optimistically toward the future and not dwell on the distant past.

Both CNN and the NYT are starting to turn on Biden. He’ll be gone in 90 days; either resignation or the 25th Amendment. Dr. Jill won’t have her Christmas at the White House.
I'm not sure where I first heard it. Here, perhaps. It goes that Biden supporters make conclusory statements. So do Trump opponents.
They tell you a conclusion as if it's a fact. But they don't tell you the facts leading to the conclusion and discussing the issue looking for the facts is hopeless.
The same was true of press reporting.
Some time back, one guy on Fb, educated, well-traveled, namvet, referred to Trump as "pure evil." Would not explain why.
The glowing recommendations for Biden were the same. Conclusory with nothing to back them up.
I have a friend, retired banker, active in the community, who is convinced the infrastructure bill is almost entirely for things like roads and bridges. When I question the proportion, he acts as if I have no care for crumbling roads.
There is such a thing as a LIV, but the stereotype is someone of low education, little contact with the world outside maybe one news source.
Some of my acquaintances, when asked about or presented with facts, act is they're trying to fend off a pack of werewolves by brandishing a crucifix.
It is all conclusory. From which one might conclude the press and Biden's handlers knew a politically useful proportion of the electorate were and could be convinced by fact-free assertions. And, obviously--even if you allow for massive vote fraud--the pols and journos were right.
I thought Biden was elected because "orange man bad". Me, I want to go back to mean tweets and 1.79 gasoline and a President who 1. Can give a speech without 3 days preparation and 2. Whom the media attack instead of protect and 2. Who understands that his job is to keep America great, just like Putin's job is to keep Russia great, and Johnson's job is to keep Britain great, and Winnie the Flu's job is to keep China if not great, then at least relevant.
Biden Ran on Competence and Empathy
Candidate Biden hid in his basement while the press carried his water and apparently he expects to be able to do the same as President.
Forget Afghanistan, what's happening at the border, and the 2020 street protests. Preoccupy yourself with a careful study of Elizabeth Johnson (convicted of witchcraft in 1693), Emmett Till (lynched in 1955), and other rather specific incidents from the past. Your orientation to these will determine whether you are a good person or not.
Many things that were said about Trump out of a kind of crazy mass hysteria (improper closeness with foreign governments, that lovely old word "emoluments," weak and dangerous family members) are much more true of Biden. What about the 25th Amendment? If Biden has trouble pronouncing every second word, is this not an indication in itself that he is not understanding the words? There are some fairly simple tests of cognitive functioning available. Can these not be applied to a President in the public interest? To subject his so-called judgment to the normal standards of political controversy may simply be cruel.
What a joke. Joe is incompetent, and this proves it. He says whatever comes to his mind, whether or not it is a lie, and his own people are contradicting him all the time. We need somebody strong to come in and set things right again...but Trump is hated so much by Progressives who have really screwed up everything...that they would NEVER give him the satisfaction of righting America. We are so screwed, and EVERYBODY who voted for Biden has their hands covered in blood right now.
Joe Biden has spent most of his adult life as a senator and then as vice president - two jobs that don't require competence at much of anything other than politicking. The job of a senator is to bloviate and avoid ever taking responsibility for anything, and the job of a vice president is to do nothing. So, here is a man who has never accomplished anything, never produced anything of value, doing what he has always done. He's just doing it in a different chair.
Addressing the issue of Biden's cognitive decline, a liberal Biden voter friend of mine told me not to worry, that Biden would be surrounded by "10 competent and empathetic experts" who would keep him in line.
i thought the premise was:
Even a demented senile pedophile, was better than Mean Nasty Tweets
Professor:
The press (NYT, WashPost, CNN, NPR, PBS, MSNBC/NBC, ABC, etc.) protected and promoted Biden because Trump defeated them in 2016. Trump had many faults, but the biggest was that he defeated them. However, I is clear that Trump has changed the way the media will go after anyone who occupies the WH.
What’s happening to Biden now due to his incompetence will be the same to a future POTUS. What the press has not yet focused on is that Biden was not accomplished even after 40-years in the Senate. He is quite possibly most ordinary, most insignificant senator or pol in DC.
Biden was safe in 2020 due to his white-privilege. No one had addressed it. No one went after the Father of the Crime Bill.
PS: I was right, was not I? Biden did defeat Trump. Pelosi did become Speaker. Schumer did become Majority Leader. I really am the best political consultant in America. You have no idea how many people want to hire me to guide their career in politics.
"Biden — or his handlers — knew he'd be asked about that, and he said something that was not only bluntly callous but wrong in the way that is most easily proved wrong — numerically."
Math is racist don't ya know.
The dishonest press is the greatest threat to our society.
I remember comparing the debate transcripts to the platforms and polls on American’s top issues. Afghanistan wasn’t something the moderators thought important during the election.
The absolute most jaw-droppingly stupid things said in the 2008 campaign were said by Barack Obama. Joe Biden said plenty of dumb things, but the media line was Joe was folksy and plain-spoken, which to our media means saying dumb things, so nobody cared. The media line was that Palin was the dumb one so, even though she never said any particularly dumb things, she was the dumb one. They even made up dumb things they pretended she said—like “I can see Russia from my house”. The story on Obama was that he was the smart one, so they ignored his dumb statements and pretended his perfectly pedestrian assertions were somehow sublime philosophy.
And now they’ve decided Biden is the competent, decent one. Whether he really is competent or decent is irrelevant and always was.
Biden was not elected on competency or empathy. He was elected because he is not Trump - much like Trump was elected/ because he is not Hillary.
After watching these 'Journalists!', these experts and opinion columnists for years it's become clear that they don't just live in a nanotech-shielded bubble, they also offer up personal projections poorly disguised as expert opinion. They project their misreadings on everyone else. They scramble around for years, trying to figure out how Americans outside of NY or Washington DC think, projecting their view of Trump, Biden, Kamala, the border, Afghanistan, CRT- you name it- onto us.
They project their view, then try to psychoanalyze it, not realizing they are psychoanalyzing themselves in front of everybody. Much like a drunk relative at a family dinner, coming out and remarking on the behavior of everybody around the table except for themselves. We put up with that relative getting drunk at dinner for a few years, then we tend to just ignore, then shut them out. They are beyond help.
And yes- you nailed it. We are asked to care deeply about all sorts of things that align with a movement away from our cultural anchors. We are asked to forget what made us a great nation and instead embrace faddish phrases and sophistry dressed up as enlightened thought, doled out by people who never served a tray of food in a restaurant, never picked up the trash, never worked on an oil rig, harvested wheat on a farm, never swept the floors at Yankee Stadium, never had to make cold calls to earn their next dollar. But they do have tenure.
Biden- in 49 or so years, never showed an ounce of competency. Again, to repeat myself- Joe is exactly who we thought he would be. Nothing less. And for Peter Baker to think that this calamity in Afghanistan is the one instance lighting up his incompetence, I will remind him that 8 months ago we were energy independent, we had no inflation, our border was calm and is now an open sieve, we had respect around the world. They may have feigned hating Trump or they may have really hated him, but they did not mess with us. Biden and his team of junior thinkers have been a disaster. That our national media is just getting their wake up call is the largest statement this article makes.

"Testing" his empathy and competence? Like sitting for the SATs tests someone who never learned to read and write.
Does anyone know who won the Iowa caucus? Did the party of competence ever figure that one out?
Maybe we can have a do-over.
And anyone who thought Biden was remotely competent wasn't paying attention during the campaign. Remember his online events? The one with the deejay? "Am I on now?" The bird chirping outside the window?
Remember the Democratic Convention?!
Oh, that's right. I forgot. He has a stutter.
Competence and empathy?
Check out JOE BIDEN IS WHO HE SAID HE WAS, National Review

It wasn’t just the bin Laden raid. Biden was also known for being wrong on just about every significant foreign-policy issue in Washington for half a century, from the Cold War to the War on Terror. In 1973-75, after the United States had signed the Paris Peace Accords that were supposed to end the Vietnam War without the collapse of South Vietnam, Biden was a loud voice in the Senate for cutting off any further U.S. assistance to prevent the North from overrunning the South. He didn’t care about America’s moral obligations:
“I may be the most immoral son of a gun in this room,” Biden said at a Democratic caucus in early 1975 as he argued against aid to Cambodia. . . . “I’m getting sick and tired of hearing about morality, our moral obligation. There’s a point where you are incapable of meeting moral obligations that exist worldwide.”
He didn’t care what happened to the people we abandoned, either:
“I do not believe the United States has an obligation, moral or otherwise, to evacuate foreign nationals. . . . The United States has no obligation to evacuate one, or 100,001, South Vietnamese.”

Remember when Biden's "competence and empathy" would earn the respect of the international community?
Good times.
"Biden Ran on Competence and Empathy. Afghanistan Is Testing That. The chaotic endgame of the American withdrawal has undercut some of the most fundamental premises of President Biden’s presidency."
Well now, that was nicely worded. How about:
Biden Ran on Competence and Empathy. Afghanistan Tested That. The chaotic American withdrawal undercut the most fundamental promise of Biden.
See? Fair, factual, and no nasty words like Feckless Incompetent Asshole. Or the worst charicterization: Career Politician.
Selfishness leading to personal wealth by taking advantage of the public trust given to him via elective office - known to the world as corruption - is the ONLY competence that Biden mastered.
Joe Biden's lack of competence and wisdom was shown in 1988 when he, a sitting US Senator, plagiarized Neil Kinnock's biography for his own during a run for the Democrat presidential nomination. To do that when not only Republicans but other Democrats and outside observers knew his biography shows the same reckless disregard for consequences on display here with his precipitous withdrawal from Afghanistan.
"Biden Ran on Competence and Empathy."
He ran on not being Trump.
"Had you been under the impression that the Biden presidency was premised on empathy and competence? I'd never gotten that impression"
Of course not, because it is BS. Even their new "criticism" of Biden is couched in propaganda: Biden is just falling short of the very high standard he set.
"Are anybody's "fundamental premises" getting undermined? That headline — however much it questions Biden — engages in the same unexamined touting of Biden that got him elected in the first place."
Well, that's not what got him elected, but the propaganda machine was running full tilt then, and continues now. The only fundamental premise is that Dems will do anything and say anything, even now, perhaps especially now, to achieve and retain power.
"He never demonstrated competence and empathy! People just hoped he had it, because they thought Trump didn't have it"
Did people "hope" that? But it's true, of course, that he never demonstrated competence and empathy--he achieved nothing at all as a senator, apart from a role in the 1990s crime bill, and his judgment about the Vietnamese and the Iraqis was just as callous as his attitude toward the Afghans.(Which I am not disagreeing with entirely: I expect a certain callousness from our SOBs. Empathy it ain't.)
Biden was not elected on competency or empathy.
.....then it was voter fraud??
CORRECTION: the National Review article headline is :

I blame Hillary Clinton. Our country, and now our NATO allies and our helpers in Afghanistan, will continue to pay a heavy price for her outrageous sense of entitlement to the US presidency and her outsize rage and grievance over her defeat by the likes of Donald J. Trump. Many of us have also paid personally, and will continue to pay, for Hillary Clinton's monstrous ego and the way it deranged our LIV "liberal"/leftist friends and family members, leaving them incapable of rational thought and civil discussion. Everything, even and especially the "presidency" of Joe Biden, stems from that. Talk about a pandemic!

per wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Iowa_Democratic_presidential_caucuses....
Biden won with 14 delgates to Sanders' 9
You see, Sanders received 43,581 votes; which was more than 6,000 votes more than ANY OTHER person (pete butifuc had 37,572)
So; Since Sanders OVERWHELMING recieved more votes than ANY OTHER candidate... He lost.
Jo Biden was 4th in the popular vote (slightly ahead of Amy Krobar, but behind Lizzy Waren)
Since the democrat party, is ADAMANT that the popular vote DOES NOT MATTER; the majority of delegates went to the person in 4th place.
This "election" introduced the "counting" that would typify the 2020 races
Well I miss 45. Say what you will but he would have held a real presser.
What still boggles my brain is all the powers that pretend Biden is not senile? Was Donald Trump really that bad? I did not see it. As far as Harris goes - to me she is unqualified based on joining the ticket with a man she had to know was senile and not up to the job. That is deception of the worst kind. How do the journalist sleep at night for not pointing out just how bad Biden is? Is it because they would have to admit that Trump was actually the better choice? What about the people on the cabinet? You think they would speak up huh? Or do they thing it gives them a free hand to have Biden in place?
They say history doesn't repeat but it rhymes. But if that's so, I hear history tolling, not rhyming. The years the Dems are repeating seem to me to be the late Thirties up to December 7, 1941. The difference is that all the people at the top are now panicky fools pretending the king doesn't drool and/ or Marie Antoinettes wondering which party to attend. At home I see a bad economic situation which Trump has shown is unnecessary and which is a result of bad policies. We could fix it. But the catastrophe makers, the "progressives" are doubling down. Abroad, I see foreigners, ourselves and others, trying to retreat from Kabul. This has happened before. With good leadership we will not repeat what happened before in Kabul under the British. Otherwise, the decade we will repeat will become the decade of the American Revolution. Against the odds, we will have to be resolute for government of the people, by the people, for the people against the supporters of centralized absolutism, against totalitarians whoever they may be.
Biden was very competent at staying in his basement and I have a basement so I can emphasize so yeah.
Can we all finally, after 48 some years, finally put the canard that Joe Biden is "competent" to bed?

HEAR!! HEAR!!!
Here is reality: the president of the United States initiated an international disaster. He is obviously impaired and will get worse. The line of succession is VP Kamala Harris and then Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi is about to become much more obviously the defacto POTUS because of Harris’s limitations. What do we know about Pelosi’s personality and policy positions? What do we know about her mental health. She seems petty, vindictive, and obsessed with power. She has no sense of fiscal responsibility.
Things are going to get worse.
Biden did run on competence, defined to be a return to the status quo that existed prior to Trump winning the Presidency. Biden would be the normal, boring president and that would be how we would know that he is competent. Boring = competence.
Everything would settle down and all the hype and hysteria of the Trump years would fade away and government could get back to the dull, tedious grinding away that characterizes effective government.
As to empathy, Biden ran on that, too, he must have it because he had experienced personal tragedies in his own life.
Democrats are always supposedly the empathetic candidate. I can still hear in my head, as no doubt others here can too, Bill Clinton, in his hillbilly accent, telling us that he can feel our pain. We laughed then at its phoniness, and it hasn’t gotten better with time. And, then, of course, it is the Republican Presidents who spend their time in office, and afterwards, calling people up to console them. Nixon, Reagan, GH Bush, Trump all made a lot of those calls. When was the last truly empathetic Dem President? Maybe Truman, or possible Carter. Indeed, it is hard to think of a 20th Century Dem President who actually showed much in the way of empathy except for those two, and definitely not in the 21st century. Truman was maybe an exception, because he accidentally became President, and Carter beat the inept (and accidental) Ford, who had pardoned the evil (but surprisingly empathetic) Nixon.
It’s always been pretend empathy on the part of national level Dem candidates. They represent the party of giveaways, and they portray their largess as empathetic. It’s not, of course, but rather very obviously publicly funded bribery. Deep down, the successful Dem politicians, at the national level are cold and ruthless. It was always there underneath with Obama, but now that the mask no longer matters, we are seeing it a lot more clearly.
One of the reasons that Crooked Hillary probably lost was that she couldn’t fake empathy, even if her life depended on it (Very much like Nancy Pelosi). She ran and lost to a guy who actually is empathetic and sympathetic. I first really noticed this the day after Trump was nominated, when he had a meeting in which he thanked all the people who had made the convention nominating him possible. As is his habit, he called a lot out by name. Most of the Dems running for President last year were better than Crooked Hillary in this area, but that is a very low bar. That was where SLO Joe Biden stood out - he could fake empathy with the best of them. He had been successfully faking it for most of a half century. And indeed, that fake empathy was probably one of the reasons that he was picked by the cold and cerebral Obama as his running mate.
Biden’s (and thus the Democrats’) problem right now is that his progressing senile dementia has lost him the ability to fake empathy. He faked it for 50 years with his folksy ways. But empathy is one of the things that is often lost with the progression of this disease. He has none, and can’t fake it any more. Making things worse for the Democrats is that his VP, Harris, is almost as empathy impaired as Crooked Hillary. We need a consoler in chief right now, and are getting cold indifference instead.
So we couldn't eliminate the Taliban because their sponsor, safe-haven provider, and ideological fellow traveller, Pakistan, is a nuclear power. So we defended Afghanistan from the Taliban, without offensive operations to eliminate that organization for 20 years, and then the Democrats gave Afghanistan to the Taliban.
So was the Soviet Union a nuclear power, when South Vietnam was defended from the communist North Vietnam for a decade, without destroying the North as a safe haven for communists, before the Democrats gave South Vietnam to the communists.
Similarly, Cuba remains under the totalitarian control of those supported by the Soviets, even after a missile crisis that was resolved by mutual removal of short range nuclear missiles from Cuba and Turkey. Thanks, Kennedy!
Taiwanese, however, should be fleeing their island for the Western hemisphere as rapidly as possible. Joe and Kamala are indeed modern Democrats, and Joe is already doomed by his age, dementia, and failures to date, so I don't see him defending the Taiwanese, or heck, Australia, against the Chinese.
South Korea and Germany and Greece sure are lucky Truman wasn't a modern Democrat.
"There is No one, so Blind; as he that Will Not See"
or... he who turns away from any and all evidence that challenges his narrative.
- "Both CNN and the NYT are starting to turn on Biden. He’ll be gone in 90 days; either resignation or the 25th Amendment. Dr. Jill won’t have her Christmas at the White House."
Sorry to break it to you, but nothing remotely like that is going to happen. Remember when Trump was going to be reinstated by August 15?
Leland: "I remember comparing the debate transcripts to the platforms and polls on American’s top issues. Afghanistan wasn’t something the moderators thought important during the election."
The "nonpartisan" (comprised of democraticals, ultra-democraticals and LLR-democraticals) Debate Commission made darn sure to dump the Foreign Policy debate and switch back to topics where Chris Wallace could directly intercede for Biden.
@gilbar,
Wow, gilbar. Thanks for sharing that info. I referred to Iowa as an early example of Democratic Party incompetence. I didn't remember how much it was really an example of manipulation and corruption.
One of the great tragedies of 2020 is that we didn't have a contest between Trump and Sanders. That would have been an election worth having. For all his faults (and as much as I reject his ideology), Sanders is a far more authentic politician. Sort of like a Ron Paul but on the left. He would have openly advocated socialism. This country needed to have that conversation. He deserved to win the primary, but he sadly acquiesced to the machine, just like he did against Hillary. Meanwhile, What does Biden stand for? Absolutely nothing. For Trump to be replaced by this contemptible SOB, this walking carcass - I don't have the words.
You're right. Iowa was a trial run. And they got away with it. It is pure agony to watch the consequences.
Now to competence. There are two different aspects here. First, to make it to the top, politicians typically (Trump being the exception) have to be politically competent. Governors often are tested by their governing. COVID-19 has been testing them, and some, like Newsom and Cuomo, have failed miserably. Others like Abbot and DeSantis have soared. Dem governors, due to their shared governing philosophy of fascist meddling, have typically done worse than Republican ones. But Democrats don’t run governors any more for President, instead they tend to run Senators. And the competence to be a Senator, and running an organization, exp I’ve as large as the US government, are very, very different. Senators posture a lot, but almost never do anything of consequence alone. Whatever they vote for that becomes law, is shared responsibility with at least 49 other Senators. There is never a bottom line, as was faced by 50 governors this last year. Instead, they do well by getting along, not pissing off enough of the wrong people. They spend their lives talking out of both sides of their mouths, but never actually having to be responsible for anything.
Biden was good at that, but it was easy for him, because he came from a uniparty state. But he was notoriously wrong at pretty much every pronouncement he made over almost a half century in politics. The idea that Biden was competent to be President was, always, patently absurd.
But, deep down, that wasn’t really what they were saying, when extolling competence is that Biden, as a Democrat, has the best and brightest around him, because, of course, the best and the brightest, at least from the time of FDR, are Democrats. Of course they aren’t. They tend to be over-credentialed, but with few actual accomplishments. For example, Biden’s NSA is a 40-something Harvard educated buffoon. But his is exactly the sort of “expertise” they brought back to the WH. Over-credentialed people who have never really done anything in their lives except be experts, where they have never had any skin in the game. Never had to make life and death decisions, or make a payroll. And add in their permanent bureaucracy, the Deep State that took out Trump. There is a revolving door between the sort of functionaries that the Democrats inevitably surround their Presidents with, and the top of the permanent bureaucracy. They attended the same schools, and now the same cocktail parties. They are our self recognized aristocracy.
mikee, I'm sure you're right that "Taiwanese should be fleeing their island for the Western hemisphere as rapidly as possible," but all the same my gorge rises at the prospect. There is no reason that the Taiwanese should be forced to surrender their homes and their livelihood because someone a lot bigger is growling at them. If you could get universal agreement to flee, coupled with likewise universal agreement to destroy anything and everything of value in Taiwan before leaving . . . No Taiwanese want to be ChiCom slaves, and in a world where there were some uncertainty what the US would do (as opposed to the present one), they wouldn't have to be.
In short, the only Taiwan I want the ChiComs to inherit is a bare rock. But that's itself an intolerable situation. I daresay Dauntless Joe will have some cunning plan on standby.
Let me square this circle- the "mainstream media" was Joe Biden's campaign organization. When one tries to distinguish what the campaign was saying vs what the press was saying, one is making a categorization error- they are one and the same. The press provided at least a 10 billion dollars worth of in-kind contributions to the Biden organization, both positive campaign material and negative attacks on his opponent.
Biden has "White Democrat Privilege".
The press, not Biden campaigns, implicitly called Biden more empathic and competent by explicitly, and falsely, calling Trump both unempathetic and incompetent.
Yet Trump was very empathetic with the 74 million real voters who really voted for him, and his actual competent policy results.
I don't believe 80 million legal voters voted for the Dem, but I'm sure most Biden voters were brainwashed by the Trump hating media into voting for any Dem over Trump.
I thought Biden’s entire platform was OMB / No Mean Tweets?
Was there really anything else, besides democrat and neocon self-delusion?
"Mr. Biden interrupted. “That was four days ago, five days ago,” he said, when in fact it was two days earlier and hardly made less horrific by the passage of a couple of sunsets.... "
Evil takes many forms.
Michelle Dulak Thompson: the Taiwan Strait is about as wide as the Channel between England and Normandy. The CCP will need a lot more amphibious lift to make that crossing than they have now if the Taiwanese decide to fight.
Had you been under the impression that the Biden presidency was premised on empathy and competence? ... The press touted Biden as a remedy for the disease they'd been scaring us about for years — Trump.
And so Biden wasn't tested. He was promoted. Did we ever believe in his "competence and empathy"?
The Biden voters I actually talked to professed to believe that Biden had, and would "bring back", empathy, competence, and 'the respect of the world'.
I'm questioning assumptions contained in the headline. The article itself is questioning Biden's competence and empathy, which I think ought to have been done when he was running for office.
That would require an honest press that is interested in informing the American people, rather than a dishonest one that is a propaganda organ for the Democrat Party.
Sure, it's be nice to have that. But we haven't had that at least since November 2016. Please tell us you're not just now noticing that.

The difference being that Trump got into office and immediately start accomplishing things that made life for Americans better, and Biden got into office and immediately started doing things to make life for rich and / or connected Americans better.
As used in the NYT, “competence and empathy “ are technical terms, meaning essentially that the political candidate adheres to the approved Democratic line. It’s true that there are some at the NYT who want to drop “Democratic” and substitute “Woke,” but the demands of practical politics has made that the main topic at the Times on which Wokiness gets strong pushback from the old time lefties. Of course, they all agree that Republican means racist reactionary, except when they are using dead Reps to bash live ones — all of which, again for practical political reasons, they sometimes write in NYT-code. They aren’t subtle about it, either.
These are all a priori categories, impervious to fact or evidence, and having nothing to do with what any particular candidate says or has done. So the notion that Biden campaigned on competence and empathy is just a windy way of saying in NYT-speak that he campaigned as a Dem.
Tucker Carlson says: Knives are out for Biden
He says But it’s not just Biden’s employees who appear to be turning on him in public. So are some of his political allies. The neocons — liberals who used the Republican Party for their own purposes for decades, before abandoning it when Trump arrived — are now attacking Joe Biden openly and very aggressively.
And This is TRUE! Even Life Long Liberals (from Michigan), that for years pretended to be Republicans; are now attacking Jo, and saying things like:
"I think that Trump’s Afghanistan withdrawal plan was idiotic. And that it was idiotic for Biden to have followed any of it. I don’t excuse Biden one bit."
WOW! when you've lost the Life Long Liberals from Michigan; you've lost the heart of the Soros party
