The headline for an article at New York Magazine is "Abuse and Power Andrew Cuomo’s governorship has been defined by cruelty that disguised chronic mismanagement. Why was that celebrated for so long?"
Was the "governorship" celebrated or was the governor celebrated? I rewrote the headline for my post title because it seemed perversely impersonal and inaccurate to say that people have been celebrating the abstraction. People were celebrating the man. There was some embarrassing fawning.
The NY Magazine article is by Rebecca Traister. She writes: "Cuomo was a bully, but he was our bully." He was also a liar:
“He makes things up like I’ve never seen anyone do before,” said [Bill Lipton, a founder of the Working Families Party]. “He makes people who disagree with him feel like they’re crazy.” It’s a pattern that — like his narcissism, theatrical bombast, love of cameras, hatred of “experts,” and the fact that, as one national reporter who covered him said, “I don’t think he believes in much, except that he wants to be powerful”—makes Cuomo not the anti-Trump that many imagined him, but rather the 45th president’s Democratic twin. Or, as one person put it to me, they are “the same person” but for “two major exceptions: Fred Trump was Donald Trump’s father, and Mario Cuomo was Andrew Cuomo’s father.”
What if the hatred for Trump is really envy? The haters just want one like that for themselves.
ADDED: These personality traits — narcissism, theatrical bombast, love of cameras, no deeper belief than the love of power — will be found in virtually all politicians. Shy, humble philosophers who shrink at imposing their will on others don't step forward and announce their candidacy. Those of you who fall for bullies need to take responsibility for your cheesy love affairs.

From the quoted article:

I'll posit one more exception: One is a dictatorial narcissist. The other is Dobal Trump.
Autoincorrect strikes again...'Donald's.
Is Dobal even a name? Mobile technology is great, except when it isn't.
"Cuomo was a bully, but he was our bully." He was also a liar
Wait, are we still talking about Cuomo, or Trump?
Granny killer was just the next loud mouth tough guy the left was looking for to run against trump, remember Avennati was presidential material too, before he ended up in jail. Can only hope cuomo meets the same fate
Haters wanting a Trump for themselves. That is going to be the smartest sentence I read today.
"Cuomo was a bully, but he was our bully." He was also a liar
Wait, was he talking about Cuomo or Obama?? (See how easy this is??)

This is every single progressive in the country, conspiracy theorists of ancient grievances projected endlessly because they give the complainers a sense of power while also asserting their own moral perfection.
An interesting question. The January 6 Capitol Riot was borne in envy of the BLM riots. Republicans wanted one for themselves. They also wanted a Putin.
"An interesting question. The January 6 Capitol Riot was borne in envy of the BLM riots. Republicans wanted one for themselves. They also wanted a Putin."
Calling Democrats Republicans doesn't change their spots. Riots are a product of the left. Or show me a video of a Tea Party "riot". Right-wing activists usually leave the places they gather cleaner than when they arrived. Left-wing activists leave the places they gather on fire.
Reading the comments in the latest NYT story on Cuomo, I saw many comments pleading for "due process". Oh, now they're for due process!
Shameless.
I am hoping beyond hope that Cuomo survives this. Has he named Bill Clinton as his spiritual advisor yet? He needs to.
I think they’re both narcissists but Trump loves America and it’s foundational god-given rights to every citizen. All of his policies were grounded in that love and respect. He never would have sacrificed vulnerable people so hospitals would make more money. Trump worked for the greater good for as many citizens as possible. Cuomo works for his sponsor-donors. Big difference.
so he was a rapist? weren't (Aren't!) MOST democrats rapists?
if we're going to pretend we have a problem with him; What about Jo Biden?
Humperdink touches on it. Setting aside the virtues and vices of Donald Trump, the Democrats long ago mortgaged whatever "principles" they had when they defended Bill Clinton. Now the left-wing working class has Biden: a pathetic, demented, useless pedophile serving as the shameless puppet of moneyed elites. The lionization of Andrew Cuomo was never going to withstand scrutiny: conversely, if Trump had a tenth of his positive press, we would have long since abolished Congress and set him up as dictator.
We may still get that chance.
Breezy has the right of it. There were two presidents in my memory who were not owned - Eisenhower and Trump. Ike is severely underrated. It's too soon to evaluate Trump but I'm real old so I'll take this opportunity to declare Trump the greatest since Lincoln.
Cuomo was awarded an Emmy by the people who play pretend for a living. How fitting.
Maybe it's just time to start seeing all politicians in this light.
*I* thought he did a good job at the beginning of the pandemic because his briefings seemed almost human.
Envy - democrats making sure all the seven deadly sins are included.
Reading the comments in the latest NYT story on Cuomo, I saw many comments pleading for "due process". Oh, now they're for due process!
Shameless.
Donna Brazile works for FOX and they interviewed her about Cumo. She tried to act like the adult in the room and calmly advocated for the process to work itself out. She had no opinion on 'metoo', or 'believe all women'. She shrouded herself in the impenetrable shroud of process, in her opinion, it was way to early to have an opinion of anything Cummo.
When asked if male college students should have process, she wavered and double talked. Then stated firmly, "just like Cummo, students should be allowed all the protections of the legal system.' I instantly saw the goal posts moved. Men getting booted from campus are not subject to the legal system. So Brazile is fine with railroading them off of campus. Cummo is different because, shutup.
Cuomo's problem is he's a ball-bearing cracker.
But, then again, maybe liberalism is a mental disorder.
The article comes a little late, doesn't it?
All the talk about Trump being a dangerous narcissist missed the point that if he was a narcissist, he was a showbiz narcissist. Cuomo was a politics and power narcissist. Trump wanted to get his name in the papers and on TV. It wasn't his only focus, but often he couldn't help himself. Cuomo wanted to overpower, command, and humiliate people. Again, it wasn't all he was about, but it was a big part of it, and it was hard to miss seeing if you weren't blinded by Trump hatred. What was play with Trump, like the cat-and-mouse games with the press, was deadly earnest with Cuomo.
Barack Obama was likewise more of a showbiz, limelight narcissist, and so was Bill Clinton, though there was a lot of sexual narcissism in him as well. Again, I'm not reducing them to that or saying that it makes them different from other people in politics. New York politics seems to be particularly rich in egotistical, larger than life politicians. Wiener, Spitzer, Schumer, going back to Ed Koch, John Lindsay, Nelson Rockefeller, Robert Moses, Fiorello LaGuardia, Jimmy Walker, and the Roosevelts. It's a very big stage. They don't call it the Empire State for nothing.
It's really quite stunning how quickly and completely the left have turned on Cuomo. They knew all along, of course, but allowing him to be an anti-Trump cudgel was politicly useful. Now not so much apparently. We should not be surprised.
Gretchen Whitmer is worse than Andrew Cuomo.
Change my mind

Celebrated by whom, exactly? I don’t recall anyone who honestly looked at his response to the challenges of the coronavirus and even respected it, much less celebrated it.
They are trying to get rid of Cuomo on Me Too allegations because too many other governors can be taken out if they start investigating his nursing home COVID scandal.

I’m often reminded of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ brilliant Selena Myers in Veep. Willing to do, say, embrace, or reject anything at all in her quest for power, she was weirdly powerless, captive to the polls and the handlers. She was abusive to those in her personal sphere, the people who depended on her for their livelihoods, but she had no power at all over her own life. She was an abusive, manipulative puppet.
Many (most?) politicians, Cuomo certainly among them, are exactly the same way.
“... defined by cruelty that disguised chronic mismanagement ...”
Really? How do we know it’s really incompetence rather than intentional malfeasance? They look exactly the same from the outside without digging deeper into email trails and other records; the only difference is how much goodwill the observer is willing to grant to the person in question.
The media *always* grants maximum goodwill to Democrats. It’s disinformation, psyops run by a PR arm for the party, not “Journalism”.

Yes, he was a contrast to the normal empty rhetoric, talking points, and clichés.
Also, he was the first and only to give Trump any credit publicly.

That's a large category. And once you purge all rival power centers, what stops Trump from just waltzing back in?
I can see it being done for Michelle Obama, but the problem would be that not even Oprah could carry that Wookie over the finish line. Four years of Biden will have a mob ready to burn down DC.
I favour throwing Cuomo overboard; the timing is a bit suspicious. Trying to distract attention from Biden's very real failings?
Surely the direction of the woke is to have no heroes. They seem to know very little about any president or, you know, history. Apparently all they know about Billy Clinton is that he was some kind of reactionary and racist. Cracking down on crime and using the expression "super-predator"; obviously declaring open season on young black males and dog-whistling to bigoted whites that they will remain comfortable.
Now Biden brings back a version of AFDC, "welfare as we know it" (in 1992), cash for having babies, possibly the worst government program in history. A program Clinton made a point of eliminating. In a context where jobs are getting scarcer for people with few skills (parts of rural Trump country, the inner city) it is a disaster to encourage women to remove themselves from work and even from much of the economy. Even affluent young people will sit around with their devices, using drugs; people on welfare may do little else. I would think gang-bangers like the cash for baby mamas program; it saves fathers from taking any responsibility for their kids, so daddy can show up every so often with gifts like a sugar daddy. The whole culture can be like a pirate cave, somewhat cut off from, and hostile to, any kind of middle-class life or mainstream society. Clinton favoured supporting work as a path to real freedom; today's Dems are opposed to that? They think it was racist for Clinton to abolish AFDC?
What will the woke think when they discover JFK--the real JFK?
I read that article last night. It's quite long. Both Cuomo and the writer herself gave me a slow burn. Traister claimed that one of the reasons the press didn't report on Cuomo's failings is because the press is composed primarily of white men. They themselves are part of the white patriarchy that Cuomo embodies. Cuomo used women as his enforcers and surrogate bullies to perpetuate the white patriarchy. The women involved were not real, true feminists and moreover they were white.....Traister was critical of Cuomo because he was too conservative. He banded with the Republicans to keep a woman of color from attaining power in the Albany Senate. The conservative (huh) wing of the NY Democratic Party represents the white patriarchy. The Working Family Party is our true hope for the future. They have a lot of women and people of color. Such people are unacquainted with the sins of racism and sexism that so define white people.
That's a large category. And once you purge all rival power centers, what stops Trump from just waltzing back in?

Could be, Harris excited no enthusiasm during the primaries. If she wants to move up when Joe finally collapses (one puppet for another) then any potential rivals have to be destroyed. Warren, etc. have been warned.
Melissa derosas mother in law was the us atty in gotham, the investigation is being conducted by the eastern district.
Harris has no constituency within the party apparatus. This is the Biden people knifing a potentially powerful rival. It's also sending a message to Newsom.
The Working Families party is the arm of Acorn the seat of the graft from the so called stimulus bill.

Andrew Cuomo touched my balls. - Rachael Levine
There is a big difference between Cuomo and Trump, and anyone who misses it is a moral dunce.
I agree with whoever said getting rid of Cuomo over this was to eliminate an investigation into the nursing home scandal. There are too many red state governors with the same risk. Mine included. Which is why I want him to tough it out.
The NYPost has an article today that Cuomo's aides are not showing up for work.
The question these people need to be asking themselves is why THEY celebrated Cuomo, not why he was celebrated. Because anyone who's taken a closer look at the guy and his tenure at HUD or in Albany could quickly discern what a terrible person he was, even for a politician. They are all bad, but the most ambitious and successful among them are usually the worst. And that ought to help anyone wondering whether Cuomo or Trump are similar in fundamental ways to see the difference between them--even if they were made of the same clay, which they are not, the respective arenas in which they contested would have made different men.
Also, the people now trying to destroy Cuomo, the ones behind the sudden recognition of what an all-consuming asshole he is, are almost certainly far worse than him.
So this is the 2nd time in my life I find myself reconsidering whether Cuomo is as bad as all that, first being when he was giving good pressers early in Corona era, pretending to fight to keep the schools open, for example. I think I'd also like to see him tough it out because the Dem Party establishment is way worse. And Cuomo will have a big chip on his shoulder as regards Kamala and the DNC after this, and not a whole left on his bucket list I imagine besides revenge.
I still like Cuomo more than DeBlasio. His press conferences were much more entertaining.
The longer this drags out, the better. Let the spotlight shine on all those Cuomoc-crushing simps in the media. Let his supporters in Dem-land leak what's really behind all this. Let all the shitty governors get held to some account for what they did over the last year. Because in the end, they killed lots of people, and that will get washed away in some bullshit me-too scandal.
Yes William, there is no question for me, the worst part of this Cuomo-de-fe is that DeBlasio must be enjoying it.
Because Cuomo was the good guy.
Seems like just a New York thing to me.
Good one, Bob Boyd! First giggle of the day.
Cuomo isn't going anywhere. He'll have to be impeached by the legislature. They won't impeach him over nursing home murders becsause that's a can of worms no democrat wants to open, as that tactic was used nationally, not just in New York.
So that leaves a #Metoo impeachment. Democrats are still sore over the Al Fraken ordeal, and won't ever go there again.
Andrew Cuomo stays. However, his national brand and national aspirations have been nuetered.
Further, nobody gives a flying fuck about New York.
Emmy Award Winning Governor Cuomo was also on the Right Side of History and Believes the Science.
Andrew Cuomo stays. However, his national brand and national aspirations have been nuetered.
That's how I'd bet, but say whatever about his character, he's got stones. Leaving him alive is dangerous to those who went after him.
I heard someone on the radio interviewed about the "Cummo situation".
Their expert opinion was Cummo was going stonewall his way through the whole thing. He survives unless, hard evidence emerges. That all changes if the 2 NY Senators turn on him.
Well, slap me silly.... 2 hours later both senators call for his resignation.
That is some crazy coincidence. No coordination at all. Just happenstance.
I don't study (care) enough about this to know. So I'll ask. Who is pulling the strings?
""Cuomo was a bully, but he was our bully." He was also a liar"
These are not prog vices. It just depends on whether the person still serves prog purposes or not.
I mean, the bully/liar thing applies to most prog politicians. But their ethics are situational.
As with after-the-fact sob stories about addiction, which somehow never get into actual current addictions, prog enablers of the bullies and liars are never asked what they think about the current bullying and lying, or how they will change their defense of bullies and liars going forward. Which is understandable, since disposing of the disposable serves the cause. Like anything else in the prog playbook, reckonings are tools.
It's adorable to watch journalists ask and analyze questions to which they already know the answers.
Steve Hayward, in his weekly pictures column, has a great comparison between Cuomo and Sollazzo in "The Godfather." They look like twins.

What if the hatred for Trump is really envy?
What if the hatred for Trump is really deflection, denial and projection?
These personality traits — narcissism, theatrical bombast, love of cameras, no deeper belief than the love of power — will be found in virtually all politicians.
More deflection and excuse. More enabling. They are all tyrants and despots; he is just one tree in a forest.
Well, if true, if the problem is systemic to this extent, then the answer is, of course, to get rid of the system. Which, of course, is what Trump tried to do.
Why?
Because he is a Democrat. Don't be stupid.
Traister claimed that one of the reasons the press didn't report on Cuomo's failings is because the press is composed primarily of white men.
Surely she's wrong, at least about the last few years. Diversity and all that.
Reporters would have covered for Cuomo if he weren't White or male, but when it's necessary to drop him, "white male privilege" is a pretty useful, virtue-signaling excuse for why (other people in) the media didn't cover his excesses and offenses.
Maybe because the line between a difficult personality and full on raging psychopath is sometimes easy to miss, especially with people who are surrounded by enablers.
I don't get the rationale that Cuomo's various specific misdeeds and seemingly all around general incompetence were accepted because he was "our bully". It's not as if there weren't plenty of other Democrats who could have delivered what Cuomo provided but without the repulsive creep factor.
What if the hatred for Trump is really envy? The haters just want one like that for themselves.
I wouldn't say envy, but when people have decided to hate somebody in politics every little thing said against the object of their hate and every little setback they have gives the haters a thrill not unlike Schadenfreude or envy.
And it's not that they want someone like that. They already have people like that -- not as bad as Cuomo, maybe, but the others come close.
A-holes tend to come to the fore in politics. It's not a disadvantage to be an a-hole in politics, especially in a "take charge" situation. A-holes like to take charge.
They're basically the same person with different letters next to their name. Tells a lot really.
“Sonny” Cuomo is a bully, Trump just played one on TV.
The founder of the so-called Working Families Party, a commie shakedown unit, certainly would know everything there is to know about lying, bullying, criminal political behavior, and naked bombast.
Again, A. Cuomo is not Sonny. He is Tattaglia.
And you know what Tattaglia is.
Donna Brazil is a scumbag too.
Similar personalities? Sure, I guess. What matters, though, is policy. What Trump did in office made us a better, stronger prouder nation. Cuomo and the left subsist on can't, won't, musn't. For you, not for them.

“What if the hatred for Trump is really envy? The haters just want one like that for themselves.”
Everybody envies billionaires to some extent. The hatred of Trump is not about wanting a Trump for themselves or their party. It is reactionary and fomented by the fear of the mediaswine and other Democrat elites that he might diminish the swamp and the privilege and graft emanating from it.
Trump also set a precedent for politicians by addressing issues and accomplishing things. How hateful that must seem to banana slugs like Biden, Pelosi and Schumer trying to preserve their Banana Republic.
Biden refusing to call for Cuomo’s impeachment according to Twitter.

“ *I* thought he did a good job at the beginning of the pandemic because his briefings seemed almost human.”
I didn’t. It was all fake serious pseudo-scientific PowerPoint bloviating. People fell for it the way they fell for Obama’s “articulate” BS. Cuomo knew it was an opportunity to seize the limelight, with a display of seriousness that masked his utter incompetence and stupidity. The adoring press just enabled him, feeding his massive ego but ultimately leading to his well-deserved downfall. He got in way over his head, and was more concerned projecting himself as some great leader and savior than with the actual welfare of New Yorkers. Even though he briefly credited Trump, he couldn’t share the glory with him by sending the elderly sick to the hospital ship Trump provided. Once the deaths began piling up he turned on Trump and made him the scapegoat, again with the blessing of the media. Once Trump was gone, Cuomo became expendable.

Cuomo is a bully and a thug; Newsom is simply a silly doofus. I can see the Democrat establishment doing a "cleanse" by getting rid of Cuomo. Shufflin Joe is not going to last until 2024 unless he does a Lazarus. So Kamala is what's most likely to be on offer by the Dims in 2024--as the incumbent running for re-election. A guy like Cuomo could go through her reelection campaign like grain through a goose. So getting rid of Cuomo is simply prepping the battle space. It's at least possible, if not probable, that Gruesome Newsom will be the "recalled former governor of California"---not a good look to run for President in 2024.

Before COVID, Cuomo was just another governor and there wasn't much love for him. It was COVID, television, and the supposed contrast with Trump that made him a star. Now that Trump is gone he's vulnerable.
Every politician should have "You Are Not The Anti-Trump" written under or above their mirrors (or the Anti-Obama or the Anti-Clinton or the Anti-Bush). Journalists should take similar precautions. Politicians who want to promote themselves and writers who want to glorify them always assume that they are the complete opposite of the incumbent or their opponent. Anybody with half a brain looks for the similarities, and usually finds them.
"Second thought: It's bad at work, though once upon a time it would have been thought romantic."
Last night at a party, a charming woman of a certain age (we are contemporaries) said to me that if she didn't get propositioned at work once in a while, she wondered if she still had it.

Just Kamala/Barrack/Rice clearing the field.
Newsom on deck.
Or, as one person put it to me, they are “the same person” but for “two major exceptions: Fred Trump was Donald Trump’s father, and Mario Cuomo was Andrew Cuomo’s father.”
If that means that Cuomo grew up saturated in a political environment and Trump didn't, fair enough. But there's too much worship of Saint Mario, the American Cicero. Mario had his own thuggish side and could be quite a vicious competitor in his day. He was Vito Corleone to Andrew's Sonny and Chris's Fredo. The family didn't produce a Michael (though I guess Kerry Kennedy was their Kay).
The excuses given for hating Trump by progressives were always just another manifestation of Civility Bullshit.

BREAKING: Kamala wants Cuomo out, made it known to staffers last night, Biden this morning. Says Biden should at least call for an investigation, insists there can be no ‘whataboutism’ on this situation, per WH official
11:21 AM · Mar 13, 2021
“Why was Cuomo celebrated for so long?”
I am mostly unwilling to read the drivel put out by NY journolistas partially because the answers to questions like this, stated or implied, are obvious. Cuomo was celebrated because the media wanted him celebrated as a foil for Trump. Never mind that his transgressions were apparent or that his actions cost thousands of lives. He occurred as the anti-Trump.
It really doesn’t matter whether they are disingenuous or lack self-awareness blather like this confirms my assertion that they are, indeed, leftmediaswine.
“Why was Cuomo celebrated for so long?”
Because Democrats are morally wretched people who celebrate anyone who uses power to advance their agenda.
See feminists and Bill Clinton. A feminist with even a shred of human decency would never have supported a user like Clinton.
This isn't about Trump envy. This is about the reality that the Left are scum
Someone should ask Tara Reade if we should trust Biden's judgment on Emmy Award Winning Governor Cuomo.
If Cuomo could bring about $15 per hour or similar lefty grand plan we'd find out he's a good guy after all. Cue the vast right wing conspiracy.
An important question that needs to be answered is this- why was MeToo activated when the nursing home order was sufficient to impeach Cuomo? How many Democrat governors are complicit in the nursing home debacle? How many other Democrats who are not governors?
Obama isn't running things and neither is Harris. It looks like Ron Klain isn't either. It may be more like the Times newsroom, with the lower level staffers running the show.
Daskol wrote:
"The question these people need to be asking themselves is why THEY celebrated Cuomo, not why he was celebrated."
Bingo! We have a winner for the thread. In all the recent criticisms, not one of these Cuomo critics from the left have addressed their own mistake. If I look hard enough, what will I find in Traister's own Twitter history, for example? I suspect she was a Cuomosexual, but has probably deleted the tweets pronouncing such orientations. There are apparently no recovered Cuomosexuals at all- they never existed.
Really- Daskol is right- all of these articles are passive in voice. The active participants are now trying to rewrite the history.
Another suggestion for the media: When you love a politician pick, the ugliest, most offensive picture of them that you can find, and when you start to hate them, go with the handsomest or prettiest and least offensive picture there is.
Otherwise it's transparently manipulative and insulting to your readers or viewers and discourages them from concentrating on the strengths and weaknesses of your argument.

There should be hourly updates on the sins of Cuomo. I just read a NY Post article that reported his ex-wife Kerry Kennedy had to look herself in the bathroom at night to escape from his abuse.....I vaguely remember their divorce. I thought he was the injured party because she cheated on him. Maybe not. Or maybe his pr people were better than hers at that time. Maybe now she's using this opportunity to even the score. There are levels of cynicism to the Cuomo Chronicles that we have not yet attained.
Cuomo is no longer [politically] viable. Karmic irony.
The American Spectator website snarkily asks: How Can Anyone Expect Kamala to Call Out Cuomo When She Herself Got Made That Way?
I didn't bother reading the article. The headline more than met my minimum daily requirement for snarkiness.
This guy deliberately killed a bunch of senior citizens of his own state, but the only reason he's in trouble now is because he allegedly harassed some women.
You leftists are seriously fucked in the head if these are your priorities.
so how come he is not wearing cement boots in the latest fashion?
Have you ever heard of Andrew Cuomo going out of his way to something nice for a stranger? Now ask the question about Trump. And don't forget about Obama or Biden. Only Trump shines here.
"Those of you who fall for bullies need to take responsibility for your cheesy love affairs." Wow, that sounds nice but it is bullshit. Being bombastic is not being a bully. Fighting back is not being a bully. Trump was left with no choice but to fight with all his might.
