This was an interesting post, but it looks like the comment thread has already been completely derailed.

The music industry as a whole primarily exists to churn out lowest common denominator "music" of whatever type, to grab the attention of the ever-dwindling audience that still listens to the radio. This shit is literally churned out of factories where teams of professional songwriters collaborate to write and focus group the insipid hooks that they insert into whatever new songs will be assigned to the pop stars du jour. The Academy mostly exists to prop up this stuff being generated by the record labels, which is why rock and other interesting music is so woefully underrepresented.

There are real musicians out there, writing interesting music and playing gigs and building their fanbase. But those artists tend to pursue niche audiences rather than broad ones. Their music appeals to their fans, but isn't designed to be so broadly palatable that it would receive approval from record labels and radio censors and whatever else is required to get wide distribution. Streaming services allow people to find these niche artists and listen to them directly, without people having to sit around and wait for some radio DJ to play something they are interested in hearing.

I hope Wolf gets his audience with the Academy, as it would be great to see rock and its various offshoots get some attention. But I wouldn't hold my breath. The Grammys exist for an essentially incompatible purpose.

Crack, I haven't been participating in that back-and-forth in the least.

As a musician, I try to avoid putting down other musicians even if their music doesn't directly appeal to me. I don't have much respect for corporate pop, but other than that I am content to let people do their own thing.

I also know a lot of musicians that basically write music for their own purposes. I probably fall under that umbrella as well. These days you can easily record an entire album in a home studio, distribute and sell it online, and never have any use for a record label. Pretty much the only service that a record label provides that can't easily and affordably be done yourself is PR/promotion. If you want to sell enough copies to make a living, or make an expensive tour viable- you may need an assist on the promotion side of things. But songwriting and performing is something anyone can do.

Crackbaby likes to tell us all about his lifelong martyrdom at the hands of whites, but what he does here reminds me of an anecdote from about 1976 or so.

One of my friends was an early house-flipper here, renovating old houses in Midtown while living in them, and always at some point having a keg party. These were legendary for size, licit and illicit drug use and abuse, and general raucousness. The crowds were mostly but not solely white college students and graduate students, but not exclusively--we were white middle-class boomers who liked loud music.

Anyway, at one of the houses, as things started swinging about midnight and people were still coming and going, a young B/black passerby was invited to have some beer and hang out.

He partied with us for a while, drinking beer and smoking weed, flirting with the girls, just having fun and enjoying the scene from my friend's prized barber chair.

I was in an adjacent room when there was a hubbub and stir, and went in to see the guest pissing in the corner of the newly renovated room. A few of us bigger guys saw him out.

That's our Crackbaby.

Saw Van Halen perform at the 1979 Texxas Jams in Dallas (June 9 show) and it was awesome. Also performing at the day-long event: TKO, Sammy Hagar, Nazareth, Boston, Heart and Blue Öyster Cult. Heart's set came later in the evening and was also incredible. I didn't smoke pot myself but picked up a buzz just sitting in the stands all day. Anyway, many of us do appreciate EVH.

This is the same person who said they were asking personal questions out of sincere concern for me, yesterday, and heard I wasn't pining for my "white woman" but dealing with many other issues related to how it happened - and all that got reduced to today's reveal that Narr is just another white liar and a hypocrite. This is after I apologized for assuming Narr had bad intentions in asking.

But you guys don't understand why a black person would keep their guard up around white people.
