In Re: Trump's lawyer during the opening impeachment trial.

In my opinion it wouldn't matter whether Donald Trump hired the second coming of Clarence Darrow or a K-pop star to argue his case, the votes are already set. This is about posturing, political power, and ego, not a dispassionate, boring application of law.

For 40 years I have been harangued by lefties about evil corporations. Now that we actually have evil corporations, the lefties love them.

They love them in fact more than the most rabid private sector worshipping libertarian ever did. “It's a private company they can ban whatever they want.”

As the temperature in Madison falls this evening the ice on lake on Lake Mendota will thicken as additional water freezes. The expansion of the water as it freezes causes pressure to build in the ice. Eventually the ice cracks to release the pressure, resulting in tremendous booming sounds. It's worth the effort to walk out on the ice on a cold night (forecasted low tonight in Madison is -7) to experience the booming. Best time to observe is usually after about 9:00 PM.

Just now I accidentally touched somewhere within a webpage I was reading and it pulled up a Facebook login screen. I couldn't login because I don't have a Facebook account and I couldn't extricate myself from the login screen. When I finally did, by rebooting, several months of open links had been erased. Incredible.

Just watched a little today. Trump’s lawyer became emotional reading a Longfellow (I think) poem at the end of his argument. Unexpected, awkward and moving all at once. The vote afterwards was expected except Cassidy voted with Collins et al to proceed with the trial. Not sure why.

“Miss Trump yet?”

Ken B म्हणाले...

No. The constitution became irrelevant when it was overridden by Twitter's terms of service and 90% of the country said “yep, seems right”.

stevew म्हणाले...

Very disappointed in my Senator, Susan Collins. She continues to play games, to appease the Left, to kowtow and suck up to Illegitimate Potus Biden and gets nothing from it in return.

The Portland Press Herald made a big, big deal out of her request for a meeting with Biden to discuss the stimulus bill. Senator Collins was arguing for a more focused, less costly package. Biden described the meeting as good, respectful, and productive. Then a day or two later he abandoned any thought of compromise and rammed through his full multi-trillion dollar package. Senator Collins it too stupid, or too craven, to have seen the move for what it really was: a classic grin fucking.

I don't know who she thinks she serves with this vote for the trial, but it isn't the people and the state of Maine.

Breezy म्हणाले...

Senate vote was 56 to 44 that the trial is Constitutional. Crazy times. No CJ, who you’d think would give a clue. Whatever.

Browndog म्हणाले...

So, can anyone provide a synopsis of what went on at the very important impeachment trial today?

Everyone I read that had to watch is pretty consistent: Trump's defense sucked.

Examples:

Losing arguments:
• This is unconstitutional
• It’s beneath the Senate (lol)
• Congress has better things to do

Winning arguments:
• Evidence attacks were pre-planned
• Help for extra security denied by Congress
• Trump said nothing in his speech that day to provoke mob

This isn’t hard—it’s the only chance Trump has to directly refute the evidence. For example, why would legal team go along with “5 deaths” narrative instead of confront it head on? Every moment they don’t debunk the lies in the case is a moment wasted

more..

Steve Bannon on Trump defense:

“The strategy is not working...this is asymmetric information warfare: Democrats argue a coherent made-for-TV fantasy that works on an emotional level. Lindsey Graham’s team argues the constitution and nobody cares. Changes needed and needed now”

Big criticism is the defense seems to have the GOP as a client, not Trump.

I'm kind of surprised there aren't thousands of lawsuits based on unequal treatment.

A family walks in from Mexico and can send their kids to any school they want...you know, the ones they're not supporting with property taxes but you are.

If you've ever run a business, read David Hogg about his start up for a good laugh. I expect he thought it would be easy to get fluff for a pillow since there's so much floating around - when Harrisbiden talks, for example. But it has to be truly comfortable fluff. I can see the new cliche we'll have: "your speech was flat as a Hogg pillow."
He's got a logo, news coverage and progressive advisory board. I suggest "sleep like a Hogg" as a slogan. Now if he can just decide how to make a pillow, find a factory location, hire union workers, settle union grievances, fill in the paper work, conform to city, county, state, Federal and international requirements, borrow money, pay money back, put aside for social security payments, work out a marketing plan, design ads, take orders, ship orders, keep records on payments - why then he'll be about ready to fail as the state shuts down his plant for mask violations, dust hazards and unpaid taxes.

We are criticized for saying the election had some funny elements, but it is clear at a high level of probability that the election was manipulated by lies from Government agencies (CDC). Is this just an OK fortification of the election? The FBI certainly lied when it used falsified testimony to the FISA court to surveil all things Trump, but they got off with no jail time. If the FBI lies to the court, A-OK. If you lie to the FBI, spend every penny you have on attorneys fees and go to jail, along with your family members who will be charged to make you plea.

It’s not clear who shot first—cops or rabble—but the government used it as an opportunity to hang some inconvenient people for incitement, including one guy who wasn’t even in Chicago and was only tangentially involved in planning the protest. Public reaction was not favourable to the government.

I see a lot of parallels to the Jan 6 protest and a smart speaker could make something of it in front of a Democratic audience.
