RIP Larry King.
I ran yesterday here in NoCal in the chill (44 deg), and by the end of the second mile, had taken off my shirt to run only in my running bra. Even when it started to rain, I was warm enough.
I, too, am always amazed at how warm I get when I run. That phenomenon tells me all I need to know about the difference in calorie expenditure between running and walking.
Heading out for a long run with friends this morning--it is just above freezing. On the rocky slopes of the foothills, we will have to watch for ice!
Until they fall through....it's been a mild winter. How thick is the ice?
When the air is crisp and the snow crust has that crunchy bite, it's the best weather ever. One of my favorite memories of Anchorage is my husband and dad in the yard in the dark playing ping pong at about 13F.
The chief effect of real cold on exercise is that you have to heat up all the air you breathe to body temperature, and that takes priority aerobic capacity. If you're already near your aerobic limit in the exercise, you'll notice you go slower.

Never go lake or river skating without these.
Badgers at dawn. One on land. Others on ice.
Same here this morning. Beautiful crisp winter morning. Blue sky, sun turns the snow bright white. Most importantly, no wind. Wind sucks.

I used to ice fish, and always had the picks that would go around your neck so they were always available. Went through once, fortunately the water was only waist deep.
Your version of terribly cold and mine differ greatly.
NBC's Katy Tur interviewed retard Greta Thunberg about climate change yesterday. LOL the MSM is a joke.
Oh gee, it's 8 degrees in Central Wisconsin at the tail end of January. Therefore global warming is fake! In fact the average for today is a low of 13 and a high of 27.
There's so much difference between running and walking.
That's SO TRUE!
one shatters your knees, and puts you THAT MUCH CLOSER to knee replacement.
the other is relaxing and STILL good for you
Even IF global warming is NOT fake....
WHY would Anyone care about the opinions of a mentally disabled teenager?
Hmmm? I'll wait... Let me know Why?
"There's so much difference between running and walking".
That's true. It's twu! it's twu!
I think it can be pretty easy to overdress for a winter run, especially with strong winds. I was close to being overdressed yesterday afternoon, the wind chill made me weary of my clothing choices, so I added a neck gator. That came off before I made it a mile. Then it was unzip my jacket when the wind was at my back and zip it back up when I faced the wind. I much prefer to run in the winter. Congratulations for keeping your running going!
Reminds me of when I lived in Fairbanks, AK for three years. Up there 8 is considered a warm day this time of year. -20 is cold, a high of -20 for a month sucked. I don't remember anyone running outdoors when the temp was below -20, only the cries of the ever present Ravens.
Does HCQ work after all? https://twitter.com/MacaesBruno/status/1352978565097279488
To each their own for weather preference. I prefer the January average daily high of 63 F down here in the Florida panhandle (PCB Grand Lagoon) where I can ride my bicycle most days. Got over 3,000 miles in during 2020, riding at my slower pace and able to enjoy the scenery while doing so.
Ken B.- It appears that many doctors and scientists knew all along about HCQ being a valid tool against covid-19, but they were bullied or deplatformed if they tried to spread their knowledge.
"I think it can be pretty easy to overdress for a winter run... Then it was unzip my jacket when the wind was at my back and zip it back up when I faced the wind...."
Yes, I put on an extra layer today — a fleece in between a base layer top and the usual fairly light but insulated jacket. By the end of the run, I had the jacket unzipped.
Skating on a lake at the edge of a wood.
was it cold? I work outside and it always depends on the wind. If it's 8 degrees out and the sun is out and no wind, it's very tolerable. Add wind and it's a different story
Screw that.
I'm fine with the inside of my nose never freezing again.
David53: I lived in Fairbanks for 5 years; it's hard to describe to people just how "cold" cold can be. At -20 it hurts to breath. I lived in an apartment and had no garage. Vehicles do not respond well to -45.
Blood runs thick up north.
“ And in Delaware and Virginia he is not impeachable till out of office. The President of the United States is impeachable at any time during his continuance in office. ”
Of course, this quote refers to impeachments not trials of impeachments, and Trump was impeached whilst in office.
I suggest this is a strong argument for the trial now being constitutional. He could be impeached seconds before his period of office ends. Any trial would perforce be held after he left office.
I started running at 62 and at 66 ran over 900 miles last year. It's a great way to stay fit and enjoy life. Runners seem to be fun loving and I have many running buddies now.
When my wife had her brain stem tumor surgically removed, she was in neuro ICU at Vanderbilt for 3 weeks. Three days after the 14 hour surgery while still intubated, she wrote in my hand R U RUN? I hadn't been so after that, I started running around the Vanderbilt campus (beautiful). Each run I would run up to neuro ICU on the 9th floor of the critical care tower and run into the ICU and to her bed, dripping sweat. Wanted to make sure she knew I was still running. Freaked everybody out the first time but after that I got nothing but smiles and thumbs up from the doctors and nurses. ICU is a tough place to work or be in. Seemed good to spread a little cheer in there.

High in the alps a retreating glacier exposed a tree trunk. What was unusual about this trunk is that it still had most of its root ball. Which means it didn't travel far from where it grew. It offered a lot of data on the climate before the last ice age. One of the things it revealed was that it was a lot warmer when that tree was alive. Warmer for about 200 years. I wish Dr. Mann was as forthcoming as that tree stump. Then Freder could speak from a position of knowledge.

When I lived Up North, lo those many years ago, I never ever experienced 8 degrees as being anything other than bitterly cold. 50 degrees is crisp and lovely, at least here in Florida. But vive le difference; you folks who love the winter weather can stay Up North and enjoy it. Just please try to keep it up there with you where it belongs and not down here!
Up North begins at the northern border of Florida, by the way.
Back in middle flatlandia again after a nice 6 hour drive from east flatlandia
So I go out for dinner to a sort of bar & grill. Not a lot of choices here.
I walk in the door with my mask on. 2 couples are coming out and one of the women stops me, says hello then grabs my mask, pulls it off, hands it to me and says "this is a mask free area"
I look around, nobody is wearing masks. Not customers, not staff.
"yeah," I thought "my kind of place!"
As far as I know state law requires masks.

A splendid repast.

Yup, I have that in rotation on my phone. Also, "never been to bed with an ugly woman but I've sure woke up with a few", the winner, and a couple dozen more.
Update on the masks:they do on site kung flu testing.
It a 2 step process
They pour you a beer and you see if you can smell it.
If you can, see if you can taste it.
If you can smell and taste it you are OK but they recommend frequent repetition.
If you can't smell or taste the beer, they recommend copious amounts of whiskey as a curative.

You have Plastic Jesus by Cool Hand Luke..? Another popular religious song in the church
I frequent..

I don't have plastic jesus but I've known the song since the early 60s. Before Luke.
I had thought it was by brother Dave Gardner. Looking at the song's wikipedia entry I see I was wrong.
I also thought it was an inspirational song (I still do) that people made fun of. That happens a lot.
However I now find it was written as a parody in 1957. Sorry guys, you screwed up. A lot of people take it seriously.
