"Russian riot police stormed into a monastery Tuesday to detain a rebel monk who has castigated the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church leadership and denied the existence of the coronavirus...."

"Authorities charged [Father Sergiy] with inciting suicidal actions through sermons in which he urged believers to 'die for Russia.'...  When the virus arrived in Russia early this year, the 65-year-old monk denied its existence and denounced government efforts to stem the pandemic as 'Satan’s electronic camp.' He has described the vaccines being developed against COVID-19 as part of a global plot to control the masses via chips.... The monk chastised Russian President Vladimir Putin as a 'traitor to the Motherland' who was serving a Satanic 'world government.'...  In his fiery sermons, he... glorified Russia’s last czar, Nicholas II."

Evidently "inciting suicidal actions", which in Russia can get you 5 years in prison.

Thanks, Nonapod, for your explanation.

Inciting someone to suicide by threats, cruel treatment, or systematic humiliation is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

If Father Sergiy gets a good lawyer, he will be acquitted on those charges.

In fact, Father Sergiy was not inciting someone to suicide.

If you're going to glorify a czar, don't glorify Nicholas II. Peter the Great or Catherine the Great, maybe.

Mike Sylwester म्हणाले...

Also, Father Sergiy was not using threats, cruel treatment or systematic humiliation.

This is as preposterous as the prosecution of Michael Flynn was here in the USA.

"Threats, cruel treatment, and humiliation"?

Those are the first three sacraments of Russian Othodoxy.

And staples of Russian popular culture

Five years in prison or five years in Russia.

There's a difference?

"President-Elect" Biden should ask Congress to pass a federal law against inciting people to commit suicide.

Then, anyone anywhere who refuses to wear a face-mask can be prosecuted for violating that federal law.

Fr. Sergiy is my new favorite priest. Sure, lots of priests and other members of the clergy talk a good game, but this one looks like he has brass knuckles in his back pocket.

I remember seeing the punk band Satan’s Electronic Camp on a double header with Fecal Urgency at the 930 Club in DC in the early 80's.
