Weird WaPo headline catches my eye: "Kamala Harris knows things no vice president has ever known."

I have not read this piece yet. I'm just trying to observe my understanding as it dawns on me. My first thought was: What kind of fawning bullshit is this? I was just complaining that the mainstream media hasn't subjected Kamala Harris to any serious testing, and now here's this ludicrous headline ascribing special powers of knowing to her.

I see it's in the "Style" pages, which is what we have in the newspaper today instead of what used to be called the "Women's" pages. So now I'm thinking of the old concept "Women's Ways of Knowing." Have you heard of these 5 "ways of knowing" — something about "women's cognitive development, dependent on conceptions of self (self), relationship with others (voice) and understanding of the origins and identity of authority, truth and knowledge (mind)"?

Is that what this WaPo thing is onto? Harris "knows things no vice president has ever known" because no vice president has ever been a woman? And extend that to no vice president has ever been black.

The piece is by Monica Hesse.

I keep thinking about how, at some point in Kamala Harris’s life, she has painstakingly reviewed her office wardrobe with the understanding that the difference between “slut” and “feminazi” is a few inches of worsted-wool hemline. At some point, she has approached a stranger in a public bathroom because the Tampax machine is broken again, and she has said, I’m so sorry, but do you have — and then she didn’t have to finish the question because women in bathrooms know that there is only one end to that question.

You know, I went through an entire life's worth of menstruating and never once asked as stranger in a public bathroom for a tampon. It's not something that just has to happen to every woman. Nor did I ever even consider whether clothes I wore to the office needed to get between “slut” and “feminazi.” I don't even know now which one is shorter, but why would it matter, since neither message is office-appropriate? Wouldn't you just be picking your length and deciding how much you cared about being appropriate?

I'm not buying Hesse's portrayal of the necessary experience of a woman, but in any case, who cares whether vice presidents know these things, and didn't Hesse already go through this collection of thoughts when she contemplated a first woman president 4 years ago?

There is something profoundly moving about the fact that Kamala Harris has walked through the world as a woman. That she has thought, talked, purchased, exercised, sought medical care, sought justice, laughed and bitten her tongue as a woman.

Oh, I'm  profoundly moved. I'll tell you that. Profoundly moved to scoff at this sententiousness. And I won't bite my tongue — as a woman — bite my womanly woman's tongue as a woman — at the anger I feel that a Washington Post column is frittered away on generic woman's material when this person — Kamala Harris — is on the verge of becoming not merely vice president but President and she has not been seriously questioned and raked over the coals like a real candidate.

We the people are treated like morons. Some of us treated-like-morons people are happy enough with their predicament because they are not openly called "deplorables" like those treated-like-morons people on the other side. Click on the comments over there if you'd like to listen to these happy folk burble.

Magnificent piece on so many levels Ms. Hesse. I'll be sharing this far and wide...Thank you.

ADDED: On a less political note, did "burble" — like "chortle" and "galumph" — originate in the 1871 Lewis Carroll poem "Jabberwocky"?
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

The OED tells us that "burble" was an English word going all the way back to c1300, but it only meant bubble or gurgle. Carroll got a new meaning started: "To speak murmurously."

This feminist myth making. You make your target imagine certain things as having happened to them, and they react as though they had happened to them. Women who were never raped will think of themselves as rape victims if rape stories are pounded into their heads.
It's not just women, either. White men who have never been subject to discrimination will think of themselves as being discriminated against if they listen to the stories of men who say that they have experienced discrimination.
How many black people think of themselves as having suffered from slavery and discrimination? Even black millionaires who were born to wealthy families imagine themselves as having suffered the ill effects of two hundred years of slavery.

I don't think that K.Harris has ever been dumped on as a "feminazi" in her career. She hasn't really had that reputation. She definitely has been a Nazi collaborator in the sense that her Justice Department has persecuted people like David Daleiden, but that was not just her, or her at all, and its quite difficult to think that a professional puppet like her has the free will to deserve it. Whatever she says, no matter the venue, one has to look for the fellows feeding her her lines.

As for the other charge, well, I don't think the few inches in question were about her hemline.

Hunter Laptop Story Portends a Dark Winter for Free Speech
If Joe Biden is elected, he will owe the tech companies a favor.

On July 7, 2019, Joe Biden signed an amended tax return for 2017, the last year during which he earned a salary as a vice president. Biden reported an adjusted gross income of $11,031,309—much of which involved routing his speaking fees and book royalties through a corporation named Celticcapri Corp.

Conspicuously missing from this tax return was any mention of his newly acquired 10 percent stake in Sinohawk Holdings, the company the Bidens formed in connection with their deal with the Chinese energy company CEFC. A Biden family business partner, Tony Bobulinski, who helped form and run Sinohawk Holdings, recently gave an interview with Tucker Carlson during which he confirmed speaking directly to Vice President Biden about the deal.

On the final day before the election, the core facts of the Biden-China scandal remain murky.

Bobulinski said he expected two payments of $5 million each from the Chinese partner to Sinohawk but the payments did not arrive as expected. He implied—but did not definitively show —the Bidens took the money directly from the Chinese, cutting out the other non-Biden partners.

Bobulinski said he believed the Bidens were compromised by China. But at the time the money changed hands, Joe Biden was a private citizen. If Bobulinski is correct that the Bidens took substantial money out of the deal, then the former vice president appears to have been untruthful in public statements claiming he never took any money from the foreign deals or even discussed the deals directly with his son Hunter.

also - Bobulinski did not kill himself.

Any honest person who is paying attention has to recognize that the Democrat party leadership is corrupt and has sold out or is being blackmailed by various foreign governments. Otherwise, how can you explain the nomination of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Of course, you can say the same thing about the Republican party.

In a sane world Trump would not be president of the US because he would not have needed to, one of the political parties would have taken up his positions on free trade, illegal immigration, supporting Israel, deregulation, tax relief, etc. because they were popular and good for the middle and lower classes, but neither party did. Instead both parties supported policies that impoverished large swaths of the US populace. There has to be a reason for that. And speaking of constitutional responsibilities, what are those of the Vice President again? He or she is the tie breaker in Senate votes. Aaand... what else again?

The VP is the president of the Senate. They have quite a few powers. They can't vote but do have control over agendas, speaking, discussion and some other things.

Sadly all these powers have been let to lapse, ceded to party leaders by custom.

I looked into back in 2008 when Sarah Palin was running for VP and talked about how she would exercise the powers of President of the Senate.

It is kind of like the Queen of England. Everyone talks about her being powerless and she is. But she is only powerless because she chooses not to exercise her powers. In reality, she has more powers than Stalin had.

VPs seem to think they should be thought of as potential presidents and they will not do anything to upset the party and thus their chances at the oval.

We think of them as "Working for the president" and they do. But only by custom, not by law. The president has no legal power over them.

An activist Senate President, as Sarah Palin planned to be would be fun to watch.

It was kind of cool to watch Palin explain to Joe, in the 08 debate, that the VP is NOT a member of the executive branch and Joe, with 40 years in the Senate, not realizing it.

Someone mentioned that Kamala has never given birth and that got me wondering.

Have we ever had a childless VP before?

Or a childless president, other than Buchanan.

Nothing against stepchildren. Kamala does have stepchildren though she never met them until they were in their late 20s.

I mean biological children.

No. Since she can't bring herself to vote for Biden and since Trump isn't Abraham Lincoln and she won't vote by absentee ballot she has the perfect out for not voting.

That is what we are looking for in a vice president?

I also have never had the two life experiences this columnist says are what it means to inhabit a woman's skin. There might be a way of wearing apparel that ranges between slut and feminazi. I never came close. My range was "you should have left that back in your dorm room" to "something I got at Target" to "wow this actually cost real money" to "no matter what I wear I still look like a housewife". It's possible that quite a few American women can relate to the points on my scale but I wouldn't presume to know.

You are not, and that's very nice of you, but actually existing feminists are. Women, as women, have certain necessary experiences. It makes them special and superior. Harris is a heroine.

"who cares whether vice presidents know these things"

Actually existing feminists, and the women who they would like to recruit to prog causes on the basis of feelings of sisterhood.

Political parties are attempting to amend A2S1C5 by placing "citizens at birth" (naturalized by 8 USC 1401

At birth, at conception. The latter is a threat to the Progressive Church's human rites or wicked solution. The former is also a threat, but the obstacles to deny life at birth are greater for its advocates, activists, and well wishers. That said, American jurisdiction is defined in a legal jurisdiction, and coincidentally geographical. The Constitutional is a social compact with two parties: "the People" and "our Posterity". That is to say citizens (mom and dad) and their children, and babies (e.g. "Fetal-Americans").

“ I've been practicing law for 30 years and I've never worried about looking like either a slut or a feminazi. It's really not that hard to figure out how to dress appropriately in a professional setting. It's called common sense. What a drama queen!”

Let me suggest that a lot of young lawyers don’t instinctively know this, but figure it out very quickly when they enter the practice. We would get summer associates, a year into LS, and some of them didn’t dress appropriately when they first showed up. If they wanted to be hired when they graduated (most did, of course), they figured out the dress thing very quickly. We had both boys and girls showing up the first day not dressing properly, and it wasn’t just the difference between dressing like a lawyer or dressing like staff, but between working in a law office and maybe the local Starbucks.

Mostly, if you work for anyone else, or started out that way, the female lawyers dress appropriately. Some solos don’t seem to, but their male compatriots are showing up in court in jeans and sport coats. Personal expression is fine, but not at the cost of alienating judges and juries. My father, nearing 70, would still put on suits when he went downtown to court (though he had worn sport coats out west where he usually practiced). You do it to respect the judge, if nothing else. And indeed, it is amazing the effect clothing has on them. I remember going to county court one time out west of Denver, showing up in a serious lawyer suit, while everyone else in court was in jeans and tank tops. When my turn came up, the judge recessed for a half an hour, and retired to chambers with opposing counsel, where we BS’ed, as he showed off his new digs. Only at the end did he ask about whether I was an attorney. Turns out that he did know my father... And then we all went back to his courtroom still filled what were probably to him the dregs of society.

Someone above commented (I think) about how Kamala differed fro Crooked Hillary in how she dressed. Both are equally frumpy, I my mind, and seem to be hiding some of the same pudginess, except that Harris never had kids, so doesn’t have the elephant leg problem that Clinton apparently got from her one success in that area. Clinton dressed more expensively but didn’t start wearing ridiculously expensive frumpy clothes until she and her husband moved out of the WH, supposedly dead broke. A hundred million dollars plus in graft will do that to a woman like her. Neither dresses well though Clinton rarely descends to Harris’ level.

finding it "profoundly moving" that Harris has been through all the womanly activities of life as a woman is transphobic bigotry.

If she walked through the world as a woman for any lesser ammunt of time, would it be as profound? What if she missed some "woman" activities like asking for tampon in a restroom?

"Style" has to make a lot out of an awfully small issue. Must be tough to be a style writer. Well, obviously, it is.
Through some catastrophic coincidence, I was reading Robin Givhan--back issue--this summer. No idea how that happened.
She was going on about the iconic picture of the three young Thalys train heroes getting their medals from Hollande. Decked out in Polos and Dockers.
Lots about clothes, but the line that struck me was that Polos and Dockers are what young guys wear when they know they're supposed to dress up but don't know what the fuss is. So their outfits were appropriate.
Read that to my twelve-year-old granddaughter who shrugged and grinned. "We're Americans. It's what we do."
Wonder how Givhan got that past the editor.

Does she really know that Walter Mondale or Dan Quayle never had to ask a stranger for a tampon? Not even because his wife needed one? Maybe Dick Cheney grabbed some woman's purse and stole one, just because he could get away with it. And maybe a male veep had to ask a stranger for a condom. Has Kamala had that experience? Lyndon Johnson probably never asked anyone for a tampon, but I'm sure he had other experiences that Kamala may not have had.

My immediate thought was that Harris is missing the most transformative experience that most women have *as distinct from men* because she has never had a child. So she's menstruated and worn skirts---yawn.

Menstruation and conception. While the former will typically last days, the latter can persist for 3 trimesters and then baby is born (over hours), a uniquely female experience. But, lest the male feels neglected, that's three trimesters of unselfieshly [sic] supporting mother and child. Pregnancy is not a time for the father to kneel.

"Anyone who goes to law school is taught during the first week the difference between a court holding and obiter dicta.

You can cite Minor v. Happersett all you want, but every lawyer will point out that the case did not HOLD what you claim it did. Nor did subsequent cases citing it do so for the purpose you claim.

"Minor v. Happersett, 88 U.S. 162, is a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court **held** that the Constitution did not grant anyone, and in this case specifically a female citizen of the state of Missouri, a right to vote even when a state law granted rights to vote to a certain class of citizens." Wikipedia"

Yeah well first yr. law students know not to cite "wikipedia" either. Clearly you have never read the case. Minor was claiming that she was only "half a citizen" because she couldn't vote, and that that prohibition violated her "14A privileges and immunities". The court said that she did not need the 14A to determine her citizenship, and specifically construed A2S1C5 to determine that she was a nbC, and that nbC never had the "right to vote" even before the 14A, which granted no new rights. The court also said that her Citizenship had to be determined prior to making the decision--- Judicial determination in support of the holding of the case is PRECEDEDANT.(See Ogilvie Et Al., Minors v. United States, 519 U.S. 79 at 84 (1996)). Establishing her citizenship was part of the holding of the case

Black’s Law Dictionary defines “precedent” as a “rule of law established for the first time by a court for a particular type of case and thereafter referred to in deciding similar cases“

Minor v Happersett held for the first time that women, if born of US Citizen parents in the US are citizens, by construing A2S1C5= PRECEDENT.

Then of course 88 US 162, 167 was cited as definition of nbC in Wong Kim Ark, 169, US 649, 655, 679, 680 (1898) 24 years later.

"Like Beetlejuice I mentioned Mick the other day in regard to Harris citizenship and here he is!

Mick and I disagree about whether she is a natural born citizen. She is, having been born in Oakland and subject to US jurisdiction as per 14A."

Wrong, She was born "subject to the jurisdiction of the US w/in the meaning of the 14A" because she was born to legal US residents (the holding of Wong Kim Ark, 169 US 649, 693 (1898)) and was thus a "citizen at birth" (8 USC 1401(a))

If Born in the US + subject to the jurisdiction of the US, then the 14A would read: "those born in the United States or naturalized, and BORN IN THE UNITED STATES.

Natural born Citizen appears no where in the 14A, and defining nbC by the 14A would make A2S1C5 inoperable. By the laws of statutory construction that is a false argument-- see Marbury v. Madison.
