"After losing his wife and his memory in a car accident, a single father undergoes an experimental treatment that causes him to question who he really is."
Something for Karens to think about going forward. I tried to make this point last Spring, but it mostly fell on deaf ears. His estimate is that only 63% of the excess is due to COVID, but what he hasn't yet estimated is the QALYs lost- when he does that, it will show the lockdowns were a catastrophic mistake right now, not a year from now- right now.
430 of a rainy afternoon here, and nothing from the Prof since before noon.
One might think she has better things to do!
Not much book-talk recently (unless I've skipped too many threads) . . . I've finished the first part of Linda Colley's 2002 book "Captives," which looks at the British imperial system through the eyes of the people at the sharp end of (supposed, and temporary) Western superiority--the thousands and more snatched by North African pirates; hundreds by North American indigenes; large numbers again in India later on--she argues explicitly that Said's Orientalism thesis might apply in some degree to the very last phase, but that earlier narratives and the British response to defeat and captivity show sober acknowledgement of weakness and vulnerability, not arrogant Othering (especially in re the Ottomans until very late).
Klemperer's first volume of the Third Reich, "I Will Bear Witness," is fascinating but too depressing for me to read much at a sitting. The knowledge of what comes after--I'm only into 1936--is excruciating, and that he managed to survive both Holocaust and the Dresden raid is amazing; his picture of the gleichschaltungs process echoes farcically in academic PC today.

(Amazon-original blurb.) A zeugma accident.
Ray Davies is pronounced Ray Davis. I favor the New Orleans pronunciation of debris.

I can see all lobstacles in my way
My iPhone says I've done 16,185 steps today. I've been out and about. Highly recommended! The foliage here is beautiful right now.
So the foliage distracts from the feuiletons.
Correction: feuilletons. Little leaves.
" I've been out and about. Highly recommended! "
Oh no! Very risky outside. "Not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent".
"My iPhone says I've done 16,185 steps today."
Anything over 10k is good...over 15k is very good.
No foliage around these parts...post pix when you can...
16,000+? Thank you for being an inspiration for me.
The problem is not enough people talk about the Kinks, So you read about them.
"My iPhone says I've done 16,185 steps today..."
Your phone has a bad case of Bidenitis.
