The gooiest ad I've ever seen — with a tinkling piano playing the National Anthem and the hilariously sentimental voice of Sam Elliott.

That ad played during the World Series. I'm not watching the World Series. I read about the ad in that WaPo article I linked to in the previous post. According to WaPo: "While Trump on Tuesday appealed in person to his most ardent fans with divisive themes, Joe Biden’s campaign beamed in to the nation’s living rooms during the World Series with a much broader audience in mind."

Yes, whoever made that ad, sure had the "broader audience in mind." I can picture clever fellows laughing at their own work, comparing it to a "South Park" parody, and joking about how dumb Americans are.

Watching that ad, a few seconds in, Meade said "Tegridy Farms," and toward the end, I said, "This is for the dumb people" and "Actually, this is very effective." I could feel the emotion they were trying to put over. Joe will bring us together — no reason why and don't you worry your head about what he'll actually do while you're in a hypnotic fog of phony-baloney togetherness.

I'm looking for the right "Tegridy Farms" ad to convey Meade's point. There's this, but as Meade said, "It doesn't have enough of that voice — you know, like that guy... that guy in 'The Big Lebowski.'" I say: "Sam Elliott! You do realize the voice in the Biden ad is Sam Elliott." Meade thought it was just some guy doing his damnedest to sound like Sam Elliott. No, that's actually Sam Elliott. You might think Sam Elliott is such an extreme that he'd be reserved for the comic exaggeration of the voice of a narrator...

... but the Biden campaign is using him utterly seriously, to stir our soulfully deep desire for America.

Why don't they just give us the marijuana already? Then we could sit back and laugh at all this absurdity. Ah, but then you'd be like me, abstaining.* They need you to vote. You've got to melt into a pool of goo and yet maintain sufficient semblance to a human creature to check a box on a mail-in ballot.

I made mention of that ad yesterday on another thread. Quite disappointed in Sam Elliott for this. I know, no one should ever invest ANY emotional energy in actors, they are paid to lie BUT you "think" you get a feel for some of them and one can not help but sometimes confuse the roles they play with the people they are. The fact that Sam is "all in" for Joe is just disappointing and sad. He just comes across as someone with more intelligence than that. Thinking that basement Joe can do ANYTHING other than make money selling out his country to foreign interests is laughable if it were not so serious.

Paddy O म्हणाले...

I instantly thought of Sam Elliot's great cameos on Parks and Recreation. Where he was first the compatriot-betrayer of Ron Swanson.

Is the amateurish piano line supposed to represent that we all need to re-learn slowly how to become 'Mericans again?

Question is whether that 'Merica is the old one -- and the ad's appeal is basically 'Make America Great Again' -- or does it hide some hellish "new normal"?

Not sure Biden's cloying message overcomes the rapid 'hell in a bucket' that many people see on the horizon if he's elected.

Admittedly, I would consider voting for someone who ran the 'Tegridy ad. But the "We don't have Republican mountains" is soft-focus pap. If Biden wanted to win, he'd have spent the last four years addressing issues with direct, authentic action. And not resorting to warmed-over Obama solutions. That's how you got Trump in the first place!

It doesn't matter, though. Hunter Biden's emails are the gift that keeps on giving, and the Bidens are SCREWED. I genuinely believe Biden will withdraw from the race tomorrow, if not today. Storm's incoming.

Cowboy Sam Elliot. I guess Katharine Ross got to him.

Every time I watch Univision the "Joe Biden, un hombre de bien" commercial shows up. It's "Joe Biden, a good man" every hour on the hour, it seems. It's an effort to "humanize" somebody who really doesn't need it that ends up "dehumanizing" him. Where's the guy who's been in politics for 47 years, cutting corners and making deals? Where's the guy who's every bit as insecure and boastful as his opponent? The real Joe gets lost in the effort to make him a saint.

Lurker21 म्हणाले...

I don't know about the "loving America" question. There has been a progressive tradition in America that thinks of the country as an ideal to be fulfilled, and doesn't necessarily relate well to the real existing America. That's not my tradition, but it's been around since the beginning and isn't something one can separate from America.

Things got messed up in the 1960s for that liberal/progressive tradition. We were a world power wielding power all over the world, not a struggling new nation. Average Americans had more money and became the left's targets instead of the rich and privileged. The real America looked more alienated from the ideal America than ever before. I haven't made up my mind about what all this adds up to, but the "they don't love America" argument sounds too divisive, too "them versus us" for me.

My personal favorite ad running right now says "Joe Biden doesn't need to be the center of attention"

Obviously, they are trying to make up for the fact that Joe Biden leaves the campaign trail for days at a time. But some of us are old enough to remember the other Joe Biden. The Joe Biden who LOVES being the center of attention. Who made every judiciary hearing about himself.
Such a great idea to try to repackage his obviously failing health into a moral positive.

John Doman from The Wire also does Biden ads. Not a bad choice for Biden: sounds like a tough guy, some Philadelphia accent. Went to college with Trump. Played on the football team, but studied English lit. Ex-Marine. Vietnam. MBA. Late start acting. Played a cop. A gay cop, but that was done with such subtlety nobody noticed.

The actual ad is laughable. Few traces of the real Biden:

“Some people are always in a hurry. They run when they could walk. Race up steps when others take it slow. When Joe Biden’s president, America is just going to have to keep up,” narrator John Doman read over video of Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, walking quickly — juxtaposed with a video of Trump stumbling down a ramp.

...

“We won’t have to wait to deal with COVID-19. He’s already got a plan,” Doman continued. “Won’t have to wait for a president on the side of working families. He’s from Scranton. No one has to tell him Wall Street didn’t build this country. He knows who did. We’re a nation that’s been hit hard by this virus. But Joe Biden knows when you get knocked down you get up off the mat.

“No one needs to tell Joe how hard life can hit you. Losing a wife, a daughter, a son. But he knows it’s in the pain you can find purpose. To lead America, you need to understand America.”

No slow Joe. Biden can actually walk and has some energy left. Tough guy Biden. Working-class Joe from the mean back streets of Scranton. Not the Senator from MBNA who sold out to the big banks. Again with the COVID plan Biden doesn't actually have. Again with the dead wife. And hey, he's from Scranton.

My name is Tony Bobulinski. The facts set forth below are true and accurate; they are not any form of domestic or foreign disinformation. Any suggestion to the contrary is false and offensive. I am the recipient of the email published seven days ago by the New York Post which showed a copy to Hunter Biden and Rob Walker. That email is genuine.

This afternoon I received a request from the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs and the Senate Committee on Finance requesting all documents relating to my business affairs with the Biden family as well as various foreign entities and individuals. I have extensive relevant records and communications and I intend to produce those items to both Committees in the immediate future.

I am the grandson of a 37 year Army Intelligence officer, the son of a 20+ year career Naval Officer and the brother of a 28 year career Naval Flight Officer. I myself served our country for 4 years and left the Navy as LT Bobulinski. I held a high level security clearance and was an instructor and then CTO for Naval Nuclear Power Training Command. I take great pride in the time my family and I served this country. I am also not a political person. What few campaign contributions I have made in my life were to Democrats.

If the media and big tech companies had done their jobs over the past several weeks I would be irrelevant in this story. Given my long standing service and devotion to this great country, I could no longer allow my family’s name to be associated or tied to Russian disinformation or implied lies and false narratives dominating the media right now.

Online political advertising is even more worthless, and almost surely is a net negative to candidates employing it.

The question is can Biden and his people play both sides of the patriotism street at the same time? Hard to square that ad during the World Series and a statement supposedly from the candidate saying "America was an idea. We've never lived up to it but we've never walked away from it before.", where the "We've never lived up to it before" part is likely to irk the same people the TV ad is trying to target, but get nodding agreement from the people who'd see the TV as ad maudlin patriotism trying to pander to jingoistic idiots. Seems like you're hoping both sides never see the ads targeted for the other group, but in the Internet age nothing (including laptop contents) stays hidden for very long.

Never any good feeling at all. Nothing like euphoria. Nothing better than nothing.

After 20 years of abstinence, I had friends come in from Seattle and gifted me with a Tegrity joint and some edibles. I had a very bad time. Nothing but paranoia and a vague creepiness.

Nothing like the 'fine colombian' I remembered from my youth.

The Democrats are trying to present a version of Reagan's "Morning in America" ad, wherein the virtues of the country are extolled, and tied to the virtues of the country's citizens. Democrats can't pull of such a renunciation of their One True Faith, that America is inherently, irredeemably, uncontrollably evil - racist, sexist, and guilty of every "-ism" under the sun, the moon, or found in deep dark caves.

The Dems running an ad like this is akin to Trump appearing in sack cloth, covered in ashes, crying for forgiveness of America's sins. This Democratic ad isn't a Big Lie, it is just nonsensical, unreal, an utter con; it is hilariously the exact opposite of those who ran the ad.

Just one America

Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer.

Or as Ma Larkey, would say: One party, One land, One people. And no more arguing at Thanksgiving 'cause disputacious old Auntie B is enjoying herself at the Community Camp for Advanced Senior Education with others of her kind and disputacious young fool C is putting his energies to good use rebuilding Uigherland. Just Thanksgiving that there is some food on the table.

@Althouse, you made it all the way through this ad without puking?

It was kind of a motif in The Big Lebowski too. He tried to do a TV series where he was supposed to be a straight actor with that guy who replaced Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men, but he sucked. He is what he is, the poor man’s Morgan Freeman, who can actually act and carry a movie.
