Details at AdWeek: "Clever Video Editing Portrays a Message of Unity in Nike’s Latest Powerful Spot/Wieden+Kennedy produced the third ad in 'You Can't Stop Us' campaign."
Like the other two spots in the campaign, “You Can’t Stop Us,” which has the same name as the overall campaign, draws on the sense of community from being socially isolated during a global pandemic. However, unlike the other two spots, the third 1.5-minute video also touches on the feelings stirred by the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement following the police killings of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Ky.The voiceover narration is done by Megan Rapinoe, the soccer player.
Ah! I'm glad to see that I didn't just imagine that I'd created a tag "oneness."
ADDED: I had to publish this post and click on the tag to see where I got the idea the idea that "oneness" was going to be important. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I see that the last time I used it was on November 15, 2008 for "The Office of the President-Elect speaks!/Listen up!"
Oh, my Lord, did I think Obama was going to bring us together? No, no, actually not. I had my cruel neutrality:
I'm afraid he's going to be boring! Did he say anything other than what we already know? There's a big economic problem. Mmm hmm. A fair amount of my attention focused on the almost-readable writing on that thing in the lower right-hand corner. Is that the pot that plant is in -- maybe it says "Arthur" -- or a separate plaque sort of a thing? Anyway, he said something about how the country can "rise again" and how we all need to sacrifice because we all "rise or fall" as "one people." All this rising and oneness...ALSO: But that Office-of-the-President-Elect-Obama post was the last time I'd used the tag "oneness." When was the first? The first was in March 2, 2005, a little over a year after I started this blog: "Students distracting students -- classroom wireless access." I'm surprised the subject of students paying 100% attention in class caused me to make the tag "oneness"!
The second time I used the tag, on April 17, 2006, was to talk about a VH-1 survey that found that the best line in a song ever is "One Life, With Each Other, Sisters, Brothers."
The third time, on October 6, 2007, was to quote this line: "Brooklyn principles can be found anywhere that young people gather to share their search for love and meaning, a search that they alone are qualified to pursue by virtue of their pristine vision of the deep oneness of things. Whereas physical danger or emotional grief leaves most people lonely or ruined or dead, they triumph over adversity." Ha ha. I was living in Brooklyn that year.
The fourth, on May 9, 2008, was "Does this statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. look too much like that statue of Saddam Hussein we pulled down in Baghdad?" Oh! This needs my new "destruction of art" tag. I'm very interested to encounter the subject of pulling down statues. Some people were concerned that the sculpture of MLK for the new D.C. memorial looked "too 'confrontational' and reminiscent of political art in totalitarian states." I said:
[O]nce you decide you want a large statue of a man, what is going to prevent it from looking like social realist sculptures? It's inherent in the concept. If social realist statues bother you, maybe you shouldn't order a colossus....
Would you reject the brooding, downcast Lincoln sculpture [at the Lincoln Memorial] if you were seeing it for the first time?... Oh, good Lord, he's so depressed! His clothes are horribly sagging. And he's slumping in that chair with his big, gawky hands hanging over those big Roman fasces. Fascism!I guess I was using "oneness" to avoid tag proliferation. Did I not have a "fascism" tag back then?
My only other "oneness" post, the fifth use of the tag, was November 12, 2008: "Obama's not megalomaniacal. He's Whitmanesque." I quote another blogger who says, "Like Whitman, Obama is wholly himself and the embodiment of us. Both meld individual self with national identity." I said:
Meld individual self with national identity... Hmm. It's one thing for a poet to do that, but for a political leader? I will refrain from naming the leaders that spring to mind. The embodiment of us.... But what if I don't want to be embodied?
At Grant Park, Obama was evidence that, as Whitman wrote in the preface to his epic “Leaves of Grass,” “The proof of a poet is that his country absorbs him as affectionately as he has absorbed it.” Obama absorbs Whitman, we absorb Obama, and “the United States themselves are essentially the greatest poem.”So are we absorbing him, or is he absorbing us? I'm not sure how this Oneness is supposed to proceed.

Nike creates division, now they are trying to sew it back together. Hey Nike, maybe just try selling shoes not made by slave labor.
I stopped buying Nike when they decided to make Colin Kaepernick the face of the brand. I'm guessing I'm not along, since Nike reported a $790 million loss.
Get Woke, Go Broke.
Can anyone recommend a good all-leather (or artificial leather, i.e. not canvas) all-black sneaker that comes in extra-wide/4E that isn't made in China?
Feels like the typical shyte- they're looking for compliance. They could have tried to blend with the guys what refuse to bend the knee. That would have been compelling...
Did I see a trans athlete kicking the girls asses? Must have missed that one...
“Unity” means “We are unified against you guys.”
A Venn diagram from these guys on how they imagine ‘unity’ works would be very enlightening. Same as a diagram of how many people that the Democrats believe don’t think that the lives of black people matter.
“sense of community from being isolated”
Stop right here. No. Words do have actual meanings, even in 2020, despite the wokescolds and their relentless attempts to redefine all of them.
Isolation has huge costs on people’s mental health and well-being and I absolutely resent this kind of gaslighting.
Just STFU with all this. It’s actively working to harm us.
Both my wife and I get highly annoyed by every TV commercial that preaches any of this “alone together” bullshit.
Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining.
What kind of fool buys into this nonsense?
"Can't we all just get along?!"
Sounds like nobody told him the President doesn't have the power of the purse...
Remember how lefties felt like they didn't want to let this man down?
Take a good look at what's happening now. This is the future the Democrat party wants for you. Pandemic living, except with brownouts and no airplanes or cars or trucks. Your groceries from Instacart™ are actually delivered in a cart...
...and no meat in those grocery bags, just veggies...
Nike was more unifying when the ads were funny...
For their next trick I'd like to see how Nike squares the circle on 'Oneness' by working hand in hand with the Communist Chinese to use their Uighur slave labor to make shoes for $2 that they can sell to inner city kids for $200 here in the US. I'd like to know how Nike and the NBA walk arm in arm in their 'struggle for social justice' while they promote, help propagandize, and take orders from the most repressive government in the history of the world.
Screw Nike. Screw Lebron. Screw Megan whateverhernameis. They are frauds- every stinkin one of them.
If used to be the country united around the ideas of freedom and individual liberty.
But the Dems aren’t down with that of late.
Althouse, you should refrain from saying inflammatory words such as, "police killings of George Floyd in Minneapolis", until you watch this video.
LINK TEXT
When Nike stops using Chinese slavery to make their shoes so they can pay Kaepernick millions, I will believe they want to inspire togetherness. Until then, I am laughing at their ignorance.
And Megan Rapinoe??? That little boy turns me off...she is arrogant, hateful, and not anybody I would want my daughter to emulate. She can kneel for the rest of her life for all I care.
Lou Reed once said "One chord is fine. Two chords is pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz."
Extrapolate to Oneness.

...all-black sneaker that comes in extra-wide/4E that isn't made in China?
New Balance is the go-to for big/wide sizes and has a 'made' line that is at least 70% US made/manufactured. Try their postal carrier sneakers...
Jeff Brokaw is right. The world would be a better place if there were no pandemic. Trouble is that denial isn’t going to magically take us to that alternate universe.
"Althouse, you should refrain from saying inflammatory words such as, "police killings of George Floyd in Minneapolis", until you watch this video."
I don't watch films of human beings dying. This is a personal moral principle. I did not watch the original short form of the death of George Floyd and I will not watch this. I have read descriptions.
I'm not saying I don't watch any film that has a death of a human being, but I will not watch video watching a person die. I think it is an invasion of their privacy. If I had to watch to serve on a jury or something like that, I would. But I won't watch out of interest in seeing how it looks — that is, anything at all in the category of voyeurism.
Megan Rapinoe- now there's a uniter. NOT.
The Nike commercial isn't about unity at all. If it was about unity they'd have said "Nothing can stop us", but they didn't. They said, "You can't stop us."
the THING is.... Floyd DOESN'T DIE in ANY of the vidoes
he died on the the way to the hospital
the eight minute video AllenS linked to,
of Floyd resisting arrest is the eight minutes BEFORE HE IS EVEN ON THE GROUND
Of COURSE Althouse won't watch it. IT SHOW Floyd out of control and resisting arrest before they even try to but him into the squad car. Then it shows him breaking out of the squad car. My Question is: WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST SHOOT HIM?
Althouse, those videos don't show him dying, they show the prior interactions with the police.
You were the one who stated: "police killings of George Floyd in Minneapolis". Well, everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defense. If, you want to decide that the police killed Floyd, then you are not a very good citizen.
Remember, Floyd did try and pass off counterfeit money, that's why he was pulled over in the first place. Not watching the video let's you show your biases, and unfounded truths, and I'm not surprised.
You don't have to watch him actually die . . . but you really should see his behavior and the police response before he actually had to be restrained.
I'm reminded of the Frank Gorshin episode on Star Trek.
"Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"
following the police killings of George Floyd
That didn't happen.
Hey! A police body-cam video of his arrest is out. Apparently not released, but snuck out. And apparently the MSM isn't mentioning it, except for the Daily Mail.
Floyd comes across as a big sniveling squirming baby.
in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Ky.
She was right next to her boyfriend who just happened to be shooting at the police.
"I don't watch films of human beings dying."
Then you shouldn't have an opinion on how they died. Anywho, in the video mentioned above, he doesn't die, so the descriptions you read are faulty.
"I think it is an invasion of their privacy."
He died in public.
Slick - and expensive ad - by Nike. I was at the store the other day and I refused to buy Nike shoes. Bought Vann brand instead.
Democrats don't WANT to see the truth...they just want to lecture us on how racist the rest of us are, and how much THEY care....It's hilarious actually.
dying
Only a person who is alive can be dying.
and how we all need to sacrifice because we all "rise or fall" as "one people."
So Obummer said we all need to fall, since "sacrifice" = falling.
If you like your slogans, you can keep your slogans.

Nike had a great ad in What Women Want (2000).

I watched a video in Reno,
Just to watch him not die.
It's always been obvious that the police didn't kill the guy. The problem is how to keep riots from happening over the refutation of the narrative.
Put the police involved in witness protection programs, nice life somewhere else, is my suggestion, and postpone the trials for twenty or thirty years.
Fewer people are going to watch Woke Sports.
Nike can go screw itself like it does Chinese slaves who make their products.
Are we finished pre-missing Obama already?
The trouble with making low-lifes your martyrs is that your touchstones keep doing you in when the story gets out.
If the system is pretty much behaving itself, though, you're stuck with lowlifes plus fake narrative takeovers, leaving you vulnerable.
Only a person who is alive can be dying.
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Robert E Lee, ... or even just Confederate soldiers buried in Wisonsin.
Real dying is more like book burning. PC even wipes out influences left in the language itself.
The elegantly made me QUIT BUYING NIKE products about 2 years ago.
Had tons of Nike gear. From golf bags, balls, golf shoes, plus plenty of athletic wear.
Today, ZIP!
Nike shoes are made by exploited people working in sweatshops... or worse.
Criminal corporation.
Althouse jumped to the conclusions the NYT wanted her to jump to.
Now she refuses to see the evidence that shows her the NYT was misrepresenting events.
Is that the cruel part or the neutrality part?
How can there be unity when the campaign is titled with “You” vs “Us” ?
I'm trying to figure out what is happening with major league sports. It seems that the average viewership of MLB was just under 1.0 million and of the NBA was 1.77 million. That's all teams across the whole season. This year the games after the opening day games showed the Brewers / Cubs at 1.0 million and Celtics/Bucks at 1.3 million. So it seems that the Bucks are down right at the start of the season and the Brewers are holding their own. MLB hasn't gone totally woke except for game 1. So there isn't a lot of info but I think if I were into marketing Nike shoes using NBA stars I would be extremely alarmed. Also I thought the ad was bad. There's an idea circulating that Nike and others think Twitter is America just as does the DNC and NYT. And that Nike ad might sell shoes if Twitter was America. (Although if Twitter was America sandals would be the shoe of choice but anyhow...) Perhaps I'm wrong but to me the ad looked like a ride on the subway - crowds, noise, a bunch of people intent on their own business. A place you might have to be, nowhere you want to be, And sports are supposed to be fun, they're supposed to look like a place you want to be. Well, I'm older and a woman and maybe I'm wrong but I'm checking out my intuitions by looking at TV viewership of sports. First indications are that real fans agree - making American sports look and sound like the Soviet Olympic propaganda isn't entertaining and won't sell.
Nike is basically Lex Luthor at this point: a very successful, very evil entity that still has good publicity. Though honestly I think Lex would have more self-awareness about his hypocrisy and give us that classic villain laugh in his amusement. I would not put it past Lex to find the slave labor to be distasteful to the point that he wouldn't engage in it unless it was absolutely necessary for his plan. Anyway, if anyone found out they would turn on him in an instant. It is amazing that Nike is not a pariah.
Nike selling unity is like Goebbels selling unity. They might actually mean it but you do not want to find out what it entails.

Once again, I'm not surprised.
Progressives can keep their eyes closed, and their heads buried in the sand and yet praise the rioters and looters because they were so mad at the lie of systematic racism that the Progressive Propaganda media spewed out, and now they refuse to see the truth of the matter. So progressive!!!
Until they do a splitscreen with Uighurs with saved heads on one side and hair extensions on the other I am not much interested in what Nike has to say.
Actually, scratch that. I am much interested in Nike and slave labor. I want to know more, lots more.
“ I'm not saying I don't watch any film that has a death of a human being, but I will not watch video watching a person die. I think it is an invasion of their privacy. If I had to watch to serve on a jury or something like that, I would. But I won't watch out of interest in seeing how it looks — that is, anything at all in the category of voyeurism.”
I have sympathy for this, and I have not watched the Floyd video either. Nor some of the other cases, because it does seem it’s presented voyeuristically. But there have been cases where I changed my mind in watching the recording of a police involved shooting. I have watched war footage. So I think your rule is too strict.
I remember the hope and optimism when he was elected. I found it encouraging; Obama had a real opportunity. By the time of the "beer summit", however, he had squandered it.
“Get woke, go broke.”
The reigning conservative fantasy. Nike got bigger than ever after getting woke. If you are a big corporation wokeness is good for what ails you: it immunizes against anti trust, it cows your workforce, it buys you favorable coverage, it deflects from the abuses in your chinese supply chain.
Wokeness is everywhere now. And you think that shows “get woke go broke”??
I don't want to be at one with those who want to dimnish my liberty. Not only that, but when you when you introduce coercion into society, there's an immediate division between the coercer and the coercee, that no amount of Kumbaya can eradicate. It's difficult to have a feeling of brotherhood and unity with someone pointing a gun at you.
"Get woke, go broke"? It should be "Get woke, die and go to Hell." Not as pithy, I realize, but more in line with those of us who value liberty, individualism and reason.
"When Nike stops using Chinese slavery to make their shoes so they can pay Kaepernick millions, I will believe they want to inspire togetherness. Until then, I am laughing at their ignorance."
It makes me laugh, too. Poison the well and then presume unity. I've seen this tried outside the ideological realm and nothing, nothing, creates a longer and more intractable resistance. I'll see your Passive Aggressive and raise you a Fuck You Forever.
Impressive video effects.
Obama: Empty. Fucking. Suit. But with a really nice crease in the pants, I hear.
Nike is evil. They use slave labor.
Nike delenda est.

Well, then, we're all dying, and you can't watch any films of anybody (except dead people, I suppose).

Please tell me my beloved Pumas aren’t made in China.
a) Althouse didn't say it, she quoted AdWeek.
b) George Floyd died at the hospital, of a fentanyl overdose. The autopsy showed no signs of neck injury or asphyxiation.
c) you will read various things about the "second autopsy" and what it showed. There was no second autopsy. That's all bullshit.
d) Althouse does not watch videos of human beings, because "He not busy being born is busy dying."
e) Nike eats shit.
I think that about covers it.

"At the University of Kentucky, the school’s $47 million apparel contract with Nike pales in comparison to Louisville’s latest deal with Adidas, but it contains many of the same components, including annual payments; millions of dollars worth of clothes, shoes and equipment; and lots of cautions."
Oh, my Lord, did I think Obama was going to bring us together? No, no, actually not. I had my cruel neutrality
@Althouse, when you lie to yourself you are lying to the easiest person to fool.
Actually, there is something more to be said. For some time now, I have been e-mailing reporters who write things like "George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police" to tell them what actually killed George Floyd, with links. Only one of them has responded. A reporter for a very well-known paper replied "The edict from our editors is to write it that way. I just follow the rules as passed on to me." I asked if I could quote him. He replied "Ha ha. Please don't".
So, the error is not an innocent one. They are making false, defamatory allegations, and they know it.
Fuck Nike, and I say that as someone who wore their shoes since 1972, the year they changed their name from Blue Ribbon Sports.
I hope all you progressives like being manipulated, because that is what they are doing to you......
Diversity (i.e. color judgments) not limited to racism, sexism, and other class-based taxonomic systems, processes, and beliefs is a progressive... one step forward, two steps backward condition. Just do it!
Nike creates division, now they are trying to sew it back together. Hey Nike, maybe just try selling shoes not made by slave labor.
Diversity breeds adversity, also a viable cover-up of inconvenient truths to their bottom-line.
"There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know." The proverb has been traced back in English to 1546 (John Heywood).

San Antonio Shoes. Made in the USA. They used to have a store in the nearby outlet mall- used to. High quality. I've had several pair throughout the years. I hate mail ordering (internet ordering, whatever) shoes. And with Chinese made shoes- just because it says 4E on the box and on the shoe doesn't mean there are any dimensional differences between that pair and the one labeled D. Yes, I've taken a cloth tape measure and a 6" ruler into a shoe store and done that. haven't found a lawyer willing to start a class action shut for those of us with wide feet who've wasted hours of our lives trying on wide shoes that aren't.

If you still have that exchange- pass it on to the lawyers for the police officers involved. It'll make for a hefty settlement for the defamation lawsuit they can file after being found "Not Guilty".

Awsome advert. I'm glad Megan Rapinoe (a proud daughter of the reddist of red cities in California) was featured because it makes you people so self-righteously uncomfortable.
Looked it up and checked my shoes. Puma shoes are made in Vietnam.
When Obama made that video the elite were saying we can’t wait 2 1/2 months for his presidency to start! We have to move up the inauguration before the evil/incompetent Bush destroys us all! They were so thrilled to see Obama and his cabinet picks already contacting world leaders and acting in charge. The very things they accused the Trump administration in waiting if doing and throwing them in jail for it.
The cost of paying endorsement money to the people involved in the ad distorts the message for me. Why not pay regular people instead of elite athletes for this ad? I know - because nobody at Nike wants to hang around with the schlubs who buy the shoes, but elite athletes are a fun crowd - yet I remain unmoved by the visual message "one elite is just like any other elite."
I bought my first Nike product way back in 1978. A pair of Waffles for running. I consistently purchased their products for decades ... though I switched to other brands of running shoes.
I will never, ever purchase another Nike product as long as I shall live.
They can fuck right off.
Togetherness? With the white-male-hating, city-burning, statue-toppling, tree-and-George Floyd-worshiping, baby-killing, police-defunding, forced-wedding-cake-making, gun-grabbing, Mao-loving faggots, dykes and he/shes of the left?
Nope.
When Obama made that video the elite were saying we can’t wait 2 1/2 months for his presidency to start!
They ran around with that stupid "Office of the President Elect." With a podium, even.
Morons.
"I had my cruel neutrality"
Sure. Cruelly neutral about "pragmatic" Barry O.
What's it gonna be this time?
If it was about unity they'd have said "Nothing can stop us", but they didn't. They said, "You can't stop us."
Exactly. No one's trying to stop anyone.
I think Nike's reliance on slave labor to create shoes that remove $$$ from the pockets of the young is nefarious. That said, I do like the blending of the sports in the video. That would have been a fun project to work on, I think.
"I will not watch video watching a person die. I think it is an invasion of their privacy."
If Floyd is "dying" in that body cam footage, then there was no "killing."
I will not watch video including Megan Rapinoe or Barack Obama. I think it is an invasion of my privacy.

Nike promotes the Progressives' diversity dogma that normalizes the belief that people are interchangeable, exchangeable, disposable by virtue of their color attributes.
Never bought Nike shoes. Too narrow. I can't have a emotional reason to boycott, becay I identify as male privilege. New Balance goes up to 6E. Alley Oop feet.

Lord Vetinari: "Oh, I hope not. I certainly do hope not. Pulling together is the aim of despotism and tyranny. Free men pull in all kinds of directions. It’s the only way progress is made.”
