At the Monday [I mean Tuesday] Night Café...
... have a seat at one of the socially distanced tables, enjoy the WiFi, and write about whatever comes to mind.
And when you take breaks to shop, please think of using the Althouse Portal to go into Amazon.

I have spent all day thinking it was Monday, so Monday Night Cafe is no surprise.
US COVID Data and Graphs
Individual State COVID Data
Cases are definitely on a downswing everywhere but a few midwestern states like IL, MI, MN, etal. Deaths/day are probably topping out, too- the rate of change is approaching zero, and it isn't clear to me that the deaths being reported are recent ones any longer- I also follow the CDC provisional counts, and you can see there that the new deaths/day might not have even been above 6-7 hundred/day as of a week or two ago despite the numbers reported in the cumulative totals. I wish there were an easy to use source for deaths on a given day due to COVID- it would likely show deaths were higher than reported in April and May, but lower than reported today- it is otherwise hard to explain how we are now so close to normal death rates as of just a couple of weeks ago.
In case, if you like the spreadsheets, just bookmark them- I update them every evening. If there is something you would like to see, just leave a comment here and I will try to create it from the data.
Son of a BITCH! I knew it. I just knew it. I celebrated Vaughn’s death, but warned you all that no one stays dead on this Alias show. Sure enough . . .
A curious thing is the unassigned deaths (i.e. not assigned to a specific county in Texas) reported in Texas the last week. A number that went from zero to 753 very quickly. I suspect that the deaths aren't US citizens, but people from Mexico that have crossed into places like Hidalgo County for treatment. It would explain the large number of deaths from the Rio Grande area given both the low population density and the relative low numbers of active cases in such counties. Unfortunately, it isn't easy to get data from Mexico on the corresponding areas along the river.
Shopping? That's some crazy shit. Nobody should be out shopping for anything but masks, lots and lots of masks. They're like guns and condoms. Two is one, and one is none. A bunch of irresponsible, selfish single-mask-wearing assholes are going to kill us all. Yea, I'm talking about you, dick. I only discard my masks on Sunday, when I can stay in my bathroom all day. The rest of the week I just add a new one on top of the old ones, because I care about people. Sure, the pore size is the same 1/50 of the diameter of the virus, but the virus gets confused trying to get through all the layers. I even draw confusing fake directions on the inside of each mask to steer the virus wrong. My mask labyrinth contains billions of viruses trapped for days. Lets meet and discuss how we can save more Black lives from racist cops.
What Knockers
Trump's campaign knocks on a million doors a week. Biden's knocks on 0.

Charlie Baker, governor of MA, issued an order, effective 01-Aug, that people entering the state from certain high risk states, or returning from high risk states, must quarantine for 14 days. The order requires these folks to self identify upon entering. Failure to quarantine subjects one to a $500/day fine.
Charlie noted, perhaps in fine print, that the local municipality would be responsible for enforcement. The locals are not pleased. Charlie has thus self-identified as a Paper Tiger.
The storm with the unpronounceable "I" name came through earlier. Lots of wind, some rain, 20 degree F temperature drop. Will be interesting to see the surf conditions at sunrise tomorrow.
Had a full day of work today, not really caught up on current events. Any outrages to report?
a couple of notes per paul sperry
Street cops in NY and other major cities say they have noticed a trend since the Eric Garner "I Can't Breathe" protests whereby a number of resisting perps have claimed they "can't breathe" as a common excuse to avoid arrest and transport to jail
The original "whistleblower," months before Eric Ciaramella, was Biden henchman AMOS HOCHSTEIN. While enriching himself with his own gas deals in Ukraine, Hochstein whispered to Fiona Hill & NSC moles that Trump was "pressuring" Ukraine to probe his old boss & Burisma
Pretty clever of the prez to say his great generals think that was a bomb in Beruit yesterday.
Now the Ingers will be forced to say it was Hezbollah accident.
Beautiful. I love the contrast of the deep blue water and the orange sky.
That picture does seem more like a Monday night scene than a Tuesday one.
Wow, I really thought it was Monday.

Things liberals believe but cops have heard a hundred times before:
"I just had two beers." (Sometimes it's "a couple of beers.")
"It's not mine."
"I didden do nuffin.
And the latest excuse:
"I can't breathe."
If it's Monday then my neighbors and I put the trash out a day too soon.
Interesting

A question I shall ponder in my sleep: is Sheldon Whitehouse more of an idiot than Mazie Hirono?
I forgot to mention that one of the oak trees that I mentioned several months ago that had half its leaves suddenly dry up and turn brown, indicating that those branches were all dead, necessitating cutting half the tree down -- well, the tree budded and got leaves on the other remaining half. But today I noticed that those green leaves have now all wilted and turned brown. So now the entire tree is dead.
Why the condo management company did not simply cut down the entire tree the first time is beyond me. Beyond being unsightly, it was obvious that the tree was not going to survive with all the branches on one side chopped off, together with the crown.
Meanwhile, I noticed that another tree near one that WAS chopped down entirely now has some branches with leaves turning brown. It is only a matter of time for that one. And the one next to it.
Old growth trees. Shame to lose them.
The horrible democrat New Mexico governor states that political protests are OK, but knocking on doors or registering people to vote is not allowed because of COVID. Her cousin or nephew is is running for a US Senate seat. He is currently a congressman and get's all his support and money from DC.

We are also supposed to quarantine for 14 days as well. When we returned from camping in CO, I followed this guidance, only going to the gas station, Wal Mart, Smith's, Target, Lowes, a number of places to pick up food, relatives house, dermatologist, and walks in the neighbor hood. It was difficult, but I had to do my part for the old people. Like me.
She has destroyed hundreds of businesses here. It is very sad.
"Wow, I really thought it was Monday."
Wait, let me check. Nope. Two masks here, so Twosday it is. It's still very dangerous out there until maybe foursday.
Once upon a time, the white working class was supposed to be the vanguard of the revolution. Proles like Tom Joad and Joe Hill were romanticized and idealized in song and story. Those days are over. Any writer telling the story of Tom Joad nowadays would find it necessary to tell us about Tom's regrettable views on race and sex. The feeling is that Tom was not truly oppressed, not when you compare his white privilege with that of Chicano agricultural workers. Even the women in his life had it worse than Tom. Is it any wonder that the children of this privileged snot passed so effortlessly into the middle class and did not take up the cause. Upon further analysis, we can clearly see how Tom was in many respects more a member of the oppressor class than of the oppressed.....No, the true vanguard of the revolution has to be the Blacks. They are the truly oppressed, and will show the way forward. Some might cavil that Kapernick has a more privileged life than the average factory worker in Indonesia without realizing the extraordinary pressures and discrimination that Colin has had to face down in his life. The average Nike factory worker cannot be free until Colin has resolved all the obstacles in his life. (s/on).
“ Wow, I really thought it was Monday.”
I have found mistaking the day not uncommon since the lockdown.
Global HC Q studies. PrEP, PEP, and early treatment studies show high effectiveness, while late treatment shows mixed results.
New insights on the antiviral effects of chloroquine against coronavirus: what to expect for COVID-19?
The multiple molecular mechanisms by which chloroquine can achieve such results remain to be further explored. ... preliminary data indicate that chloroquine interferes with SARS-CoV-2 attempts to acidify the lysosomes and presumably inhibits cathepsins, which require a low pH for optimal cleavage of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein

Antifa Senate Testimony
Far from non-existent, Antifa possesses as elaborate a structure as any criminal
conspiracy or terror group.
Claiming Antifa’s is too “disorganized” to understand is not an acceptable excuse
for law enforcement– federal, state or local- to tolerate Antifa’s private street war
to overthrow the Constitution.

Fascism is not about 'Authoritarianism' but about acceptance and belief. If more than half your country ''believes', or, let's say 'needs' el Duce then they shall have him. El Duce was an expression of the Italian lower middle class, upper working class and educated elite. However you might see it now (you, with your lack of historicism) at the time it seemed quite rational - long before the monstrosities that happened after. I'm only saying this, not as an apologist for El Duce, heaven forbid, but as a cautionary tale of what's happening now. The Pandemic is over in any objective, rational measurement but the irrational reaction to it, which started from the beginning, which is in all of us, is far from over, in fact, it's probably just begun, hence, the arbitrary strangeness of it's actions. How can rationality defend itself from irrationality - it can't, it must lay down and die. The tarantella of these twenties are going to not only terrify, not only be stupid, but will be irresistible.
'is' going to terrify, sorry!
Yancey if you come across year over year all cause mortality data that isn't shredded the way the CDC is, please link. Just plain old all cause by year and month what can be compared to 'covid deaths'...
This is what Hannah Arendt discovered - how ordinary, boring, fascism is - how being a seceraty, a typist, a court reporter, an assistant shopkeeper - ordinary joe curls you in it's embrace. It begins by very small demands - and everyone thinks they are a reasonable 'sacrifice' - and those who object are just 'anti-social' - they become 'criminals', later - for the 'social good'. My God, do we learn nothing from history!! Later those who object must be removed - because they 'infect' them - from society.
I'm so pissed off, so angry - a free born Englishman! Every word an oxymoron! A stumbling stupidity! So I can take you giving half my country in just 30 years - 30 years! - to the world, I can take you destroying my pubs by the smoking ban, I can take your stupid lectures on 'health' but now, you take the biscuit - we should do this, do that or the gestapo will fine us? Fuck you.
What is the point of life? It's very bases must be to be free and responsible for ones freedom, then one can explore, discover, be alive, dare - what was it Hillary said - why did you climb the mountain - because its there! I was listening to c-span for the latest touchdown and you got the always usual garbage "Why don't you spend all that money on me!" - and he said, he came from some mid west town, it gives us hope, aspiration, per adua ad astra ( he didn't say that - it's the old Royal Air force name - can't we just give it them?)
This chart going back several flu seasons would be beneficial information...
Even based on just one cycle it appears the it's like a bad flu people are winning the 'science'.
"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." Oscar Flaherty Wilde.
rehajm - it's over man - what happened is the usual distribution - it hit the northern states first then goes south - but even in Florida, it's over. Detections of infections will rise because your detecting infections but, always, look at the real numbers - how many are needing hospitalization and how many are dying? Once you pace those you'll know this virus is dead!
You may have heard me say this before, but:
America. Is. Doomed.
Another question. Do we pronounce today “Tyuse-day” or do we pronounce it like “Toos-day”?
Actually neither because it’s Wednesday.
What is wicked is preventing people mourning there loved ones - for no rational reason - because we can - can you, in all conscience?
Do we pronounce today “Tyuse-day” or do we pronounce it like “Toos-day”?
The ONLY correct pronunciations of the days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, THURSDAY, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, Saturday
That 18-y-o from Washington state who disappeared into the Cascade Mountains and was found alive and intact after eight days out there -- she made a series of suicidal decisions and yet there was no suicide. I thought maybe there was some element of "Into the Wild" going on with her. Or, the arguably better case of "The Last Hermit," the fellow who drove into the Maine woods and stayed there 24 years without human interaction.
My wife explained it more simply. The great likelihood is that it was a psychotic break occurring at an age when that tends to happen. The girl was following her voices. Just another speculation, but it does make the most sense out of the very unusual facts.
America. Is. Doomed. [J.Farmer]
But not as soon as you or I are.
Where's the Socratic Death. Or, indeed, any dignified death? Bodies thrown out like garbage and noone there to see?
.
Ask Tuesday Weld. Or Wednesday Addams.
My calculation is by the 25 of august we will have zero deaths from covid-19 - yes, we'll have one or two deaths attribute to it - partly because, like PHE (UK), every death, no matter how remote, will be attributed to it (hence, our impressive figures - and, hence, you're not comparing apples with apples) - but we will have sky rocketing tests confirming we all had it - and, therefore, lock down. Because I need the power and I love it. Will the American courts stop this - I doubt it. They allowed extraordinary powers on the basis of very slim evidence. SCOTUS, maybe. You need positive legislation, stating that 'only if the evidence justifies it and strong evidence' 'can any State curtail the Freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution'. You see, all might agree to curtail my or someone else’s freedom but it isn't up to you, it's a matter of Law.
Wow, I really thought it was Monday.
Wonder what day Joe thinks it is.
