A big "Streisand effect" for an otherwise obscure tweet: "Kamala sounds like Marge Simpson."

That's the entire tweet, from a Trump adviser I've never noticed or cared about, Jenna Ellis. But it's a big deal, because anti-Trumpers went big, attacking it. Why does it even matter? People like Marge Simpson, she has a distinctive voice, and somebody noticed a similar quality in Kamala Harris's voice.

The "Simpsons" show itself responded, I'm reading in "Marge Simpson claps back at Trump adviser Jenna Ellis for Kamala Harris dig: I 'feel a little disrespected'" (Fox News).

Here's the show's tweet:

I guess I should congratulate the show for drawing attention to itself. It's so weird that it's still on the air. Not only is it the longest running scripted prime-time TV show, it has 10 more seasons that the show that's in second place.

I hate the idea that we're not supposed to make fun of Kamala Harris. No one unmockable should be given access to great power. By the way, she herself is always laughing, laughing when nothing is even funny. We're supposed to put up with a person laughing at nothing and also to be banned from laughing at something?! That's not my idea of America. Trump says he'll "make America great again." What's the counteroffer? Make America grim again?

does this make Biden into Mr.Simpson ?
Marge has more character pluses points than Kamala -

that is the distinction people will be forced to come to but show creators are woke (red pill is on tongue but not swallowed) and need to be faux outraged

With you on that one. Ditto on making fun of anything else as well. And that includes Islam. Not only is Islam the "mother lode of bad ideas" (as Sam Harris put it), it's also a mother lode of comedy.

My way of thinking has it that there is nothing under the Sun (and on the other side of it too) that is above criticism. Most especially those things which are self-professed "betters" declare off-limits.

I remember very well when Palin was first announced his vice president, everything the liberals did to try to attack or rebounded upon them. finally I read one post by liberal commentator who simply pointed out that all the establishment had to do was to ignore her, and the background mockers would take care of her. That's pretty much what happened. They're so hypersensitive about not mocking her because they know just how effective it is. Am I going to let liberal establishment characters tell me who I can and cannot mock?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

I said the same thing about Obama (before he was elected): We need to be able to make fun of him.

Here's an old post discussing the problem of mocking Obama.

Matt Sablan म्हणाले...

Too bad. Real feminists and their prog allies do not care about your bourgeois sensibilities. Actually, all of that does sounds like something Marge would say and do. Especially her bewildered and angry "Lisa told me that wasn't a compliment!" Come on, Simpson writers. Is that the best you could do - slither over to the humorless bullies and claim victim-hood for the poor helpless women folk?

There is nothing as lame after four years of this same old crap. Professional comedy writers must be some of the least funny and creative people in our culture right now. They literally have just one joke that they tell over and over as they giggle to each other.

I, for one, am quite OK with only the policies of the Democrats as a reason to loathe their existence. But if we are going personal, women who whored their way into office aren't good bets for ethical behavior.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

At first, I though Marge meant comparing her to Harris was the disrespect, which is also not very funny, but is funnier than the real joke, which is just finger waving by people who make a living name calling and ridiculing people, which is usually funny. Next time get your children to write the jokes.

Personally I have great respect and appreciation for people in powerful positions being able to make fun of themselves, and enjoy when others do (see: Dana Carvey and President HW Bush).

We went from a President that could not be mocked, to one who must be mocked or else, and now heading back to one who cannot be. The left is seriously schizophrenic about politics, the press, humor, the law, standards, well just everything. They be nuts.

J Lee म्हणाले...

The current people running "The Simpsons" can have Marge saying that, but there will always be the counterpoint of Sideshow Bob talking about the Democrats from way back during the Bush 41 time period -- long enough ago to be before the mid-1990s police reforms and urban area revivals, due to the lower crime rates. Based on the situations around the country over the past several months, the quote fits as well with 2020 as it did back in 1991....

I am so old I still remember when SNL could make fun of democrats and get away with it. One particular sketch was the Clarence Thomas Hearings and instead of mocking Clarence Thomas it mocked the senators for their years of sexual harassment. Phil Hartman did a hilarious imitation of Ted Kennedy giving pointers on how you need to take your intended victim out on a boat so they have no choice but to sleep with you. Followed by a southern senator saying you really needed to use "historical porn, which allows women to be transported to another time and place, that will always get their juices flowing" etc.

I still remember Nina Totenberg writing a pissy article about "That's not funny!". It boiled down to the democrats are always the good guys and we missed an opporunity to bash republicans. This awoke me to the fact liberals could never take what they dish out on an hourly basis.

BTW, I agree about the youth, that's why voting by 18 year olds make little sense. However, a politician who was tapped as “VP” to help freshen up a tired old campaign, probably shouldn’t say it out loud.
