"Cleaners did not know graffiti on a London Underground train was by world-renowned artist Banksy when they removed it...."

BBC reports.
The piece, If You Don't Mask, You Don't Get, was painted inside a Circle Line service carriage. But by the time he unveiled the work on his Instagram account, it had been wiped away by Transport for London (TfL) cleaning crews. A TfL source said: "It was treated like any other graffiti on the network." "The job of the cleaners is to make sure the network is clean, especially given the current climate," they said.... Of course there will be those who say it should have been kept or protected as art but that is somewhat academic....
Here's the Instagram post:

This gets my "rats" tag. In case you have the question "Is it art?," remember that "art" is an anagram for "rat."

The Banksy near my house lasted about a week before it was covered with more graffiti. I thought that was pretty good...

The Cracker Emcee Refulgent म्हणाले...

A true graffiti artist would recognize the ephemeral nature of his craft. If you don't actually want this kind of thing to happen then you're just a poser or a vandal.

PM म्हणाले...

Banksy shred a $1.4 mil piece for a goof, so he's gotta love the rat removal.

rehajm म्हणाले...

bit more of a performance piece ya got there...

madAsHell म्हणाले...

Banksy has talent, but this really only encourages the un-talented to taint the same medium with their spastic scrawl.

Too many M&M's during potty training.

rehajm म्हणाले...

remember that "art" is an anagram for "rat."

...so, definitely not art then.

And those receive me,
Who quietly treat me,
As one familiar and well-beloved in that home:
But will not, oh, will not,
Not now, not ever;
But will not ever tell me who I am."

HAH. Proving once again graffitti is shitty looking and can easily be mistaken for trash much like a 3 year olds doodlings can be passed off in a modern art gallery. No talent, visual noise created by savages.

Narr म्हणाले...

If only there was some common attitude or outlook towards artistic expression in public spaces that would allow humans to distinguish pushpin from poetry, vandalism from graphics, and sickness from health . . .

I've always loved Banksy. Especially the etherealness of his art pieces...it's a mistake to think he didn't intend for it be temporary. Remember his 'self-destructing' art at Sotheby's?

His art is the perfect metaphor for the modern age. Short, sharp, and gone tomorrow.

Dude1394 म्हणाले...

It they aren't doing the same for all graffitti, then there is a problem. Other than that I see none.

Also, tar.

Was there a hint of sheepish apology in that statement? Graffiti is graffiti. I don’t recall Banksy winning some famous person privilege plebiscite. I like his work, But he purposely chose an especially temporal medium and these are the consequences. By which I don’t mean to imply that Banksy is complaining about his work being erased. What little I know of him makes me think he understands and that any whinging is coming from hipsters advertising their privilege.

Joe Smith म्हणाले...

The guy is very clever...a great marketer to be sure.

I don't expect subway janitors to recognize Banksy art, but it is rather distinctive.

I'm not sure what they should have done even it they had known...cut out the metal panels and frame them?

Might have paid for a lot of maintenance...

MICKEY MOUSE. Time for a moment of silence for Mouseketeer Annette Funicello. She was the leader of the Club as far as 12 year old boys were concerned.

Even better

Sad!!!😏🙂🤗😁😝😅😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

All graffiti matters.

tcrosse म्हणाले...

Evidently they were unaware that the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls.

Kay म्हणाले...

I’ve always found Banksy’s art to be incredibly lame. Even within the world of graffiti, it’s still painfully lame work. As art it’s bad and as graffiti it’s also bad.

William म्हणाले...

It's all very well to topple statues of Columbus, but this is an offense against Art. I don't think the cleaners should be fired, but they certainly could use some art education. This is a huge loss for the heritage of humanity.

Meade म्हणाले...

And also remember that MAGA GNAR is an anagram for ANAGRAM G.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

@tcrosse: Perfect.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Bansky is a talented artist, but graffiti is graffiti no matter how deft the skill.

I fart fig.

It's like low tide sandcastle competitions at the beach.

Nonapod म्हणाले...

I really like Banksy's rats for some reason. Maybe it's because they're just anthropomorphic enough to be relatable but not too human to be creepy?

Being British, I wonder if Banksy is a fan of Roland Rat?

Fernandinande म्हणाले...

The Art of Cleaning "service carriages".

iowan2 म्हणाले...

Doesnt the artist choose his medium with full knowledge of its raw temporary nature? Isn't part of the "art" its transient quality?

Wince म्हणाले...

This gets my "rats" tag.

"Once I was crazy! You see that button hole? Rats used to come out of that!"

Bob Boyd म्हणाले...

Banksy didn't have 27B-6.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

How dare open that window. Are you not aware that is the great Le Pétomane?

Freeman Hunt म्हणाले...

If he didn't want it to be defaced or erased, he wouldn't do graffiti. That's obviously part of the art.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

What happens if someone paints graffiti over top of Banskey paintings at an art show?

cf म्हणाले...

its immortal art now, digitally speaking.
I like banksy work.
I think it's that droll visual wit, deft execution and prankster talent all of which i totally lack.

Dave Begley म्हणाले...

Isn't it a crime to paint on the subway cars?

Ann's rats were published here and on stickers. I still have mine on my car.

Jupiter म्हणाले...

Doesn't this mean that he is confessing to vandalism?

BUMBLE BEE म्हणाले...

Dust in the wind?

Gusty Winds म्हणाले...

If you were really worried about the virus, why would you ride the Underground in the first place?

Gusty Winds म्हणाले...

Has Banksy taken a graffiti stand on all the young children that were groomed for sexual favors by Muslim men? I'll bet to Bansky that is just the love that dare not speak its name.

Lucien म्हणाले...

He’s a White artist anyway, so SFMOMA wouldn’t want to acquire any of his work.

Real American म्हणाले...

they probably thought it was graffiti because it was. If you don't want your art cleaned off, do it on your own building.

Paul म्हणाले...

W...H...O... cares. If it was put on a wall without the permission of the owners of the wall, it an be painted over at will by the owners. Graffiti, by definition, is not permanent.

Another old lawyer म्हणाले...

The view and treatment of Banksy's graffiti reminds me of the observation that it's not harassment when you get hit on by someone you find extremely attractive.

Fernandinande म्हणाले...

Roland Rat

Mickey Rat; I think that's the issue where he signs up to be a lab rat so he can get drugs.

Howard म्हणाले...

The worst part of this illegal art is the anti-CCP pro-science political slant of the libtard artist.

He has an unusual ability to keep his prankster/art interesting.
I guess that's why he makes the big bucks.
