In all my sunrise runs on this path, I'd never seen a deer before, and today, suddenly, up ahead, there were 2...

They kept disappearing then reappearing at a later point, and I kept getting my camera out, then putting it away, concluding that they were gone for good, and then, finally, I caught one...

Can't believe you never saw a deer. I've had as many as 5 in my back yard in suburban Philadelphia.

Wince म्हणाले...

Now you just have to combine the shooting with the running.

"...suddenly, up ahead, there were 2..."

A good rule to remember is that there's no such thing as one deer. Remembering the rule saves deer - and windshields.

I live inside the DC Beltway, and I see deer nearly every day on my morning dog walks. They are pests to gardeners, but their graceful running and leaping never fails to lift my spirits.

We are up at the Vilas County lake house this summer and the deer are ridiculously tame. I had one I could have fed by hand if I'd have had food with me. Fawns are everywhere.

Kai Akker म्हणाले...

Strange coincidence. Shortly after taking some pictures of the sun rising this morning, I saw two deer on the street ahead of me. I passed one in the brush, but the two in the street were at least 200 yards farther up and not in decent photo range. This pair was really out in the neighborhood, not near any woods.

There are deer near my house. One dropped a fawn 3 days ago.

Deer is lucky you didn’t have your gun

Michael K म्हणाले...

I took a photo of one across the street a year ago. Then a mountain lion walked past my wife a month ago. She was weeding in the front yard and turned around. He was 10 feet away and ignored her as he walked past.

Narr म्हणाले...

Maybe the shoot yesterday energized your hunting instinct and you merely noticed this time.

Come to Western Washington. The deer walk right across your front yard, with a contemptuous glance that says: "we were here when you got here; we'll be here when you're gone."

Lucid-Ideas म्हणाले...

Ah yes, the 'deer'. AKA Odocoileus virginianus. AKA 'the rats of the forest'. It's a good thing they're cute (for the ladies) and tasty (for the guys), otherwise they'd likely be extinct.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

Most of the deer hang around the Eagle Heights gardens and eat the veggies there.

StephenFearby म्हणाले...

Idle question.

Now that you're such a good shot and finally qualified as a huntress, did you bring back some (Bambi) venison?

Nonapod म्हणाले...

Obviously they heard you shot a gun yesterday. They're currently doing some light recon on you, assessing how likely you are to become a hunter.

They smell the gunpowder, and want to talk to you about lunch.

Fritz म्हणाले...

They’re very common in our neighborhood. We probably see them once a week on our daily half mile walk to the beach. At night the come out in droves to massacre our day lilies and hostas.

Darrell म्हणाले...

You start to shoot and the Lord tempts you to hunt. Or they were right about suicides being up.

Michael K म्हणाले...

I've read there are more deer now than at the time of the Revolution.

I was correct about the intentions of the Leftist Collectivists.
I wonder who was wrong.

It's almost like the Left was going to take the concessions of reasonable people as weakness.
And they will push the blade until it meets something solid.

Did the deer have any doe?

Original Mike म्हणाले...

"I've read there are more deer now than at the time of the Revolution."

There are WAY more deer now in Wisconsin then before whitey showed up. They have really messed with the forest ecology. There are tree species that are not regenerating due to the damn things.

AllenS म्हणाले...

So, are you going deer hunting this year, Althouse?

We saw a baby deer and her mother on our run this morning too. It was lovely.

I was set up with the telescope at a Vilas County golf course last year, waiting for darkness, when a deer walked up to investigate. I started throwing golf balls at her as sport. She just stood there looking at me. After a few throws I hit her in the side. She took a couple of steps back, then stood her ground, continuing to stare at me.

They know to disappear the last week in November, however.

"On that path". Deer Path

like "Deer Path Estates".
Ever notice how subdivisions get named after the nature that was
bulldozed over to make it?
"Fox Run" "Rolling Brook Estates"

life cycle of a deer:

gets born
eats grass 24/7
flings itself in front of a vehicle

...and you know what else ticks me off about deer?

Ingachuck'stoothlessARM म्हणाले...

nope.
not going to make any handgun/Deer Hunter references

Ingachuck'stoothlessARM म्हणाले...

@Birches
were you fawning over that baby deer?

My sister has generations of deer come to her home to give birth in her front yard under the trees. She also has a generational family of rabbits that live there year round. The deer and rabbits give birth at nearly the same time of year, so sis and her kids, and now grandkids, watch "Bambi and Thumper" play together for a few months till it's time for the deer to return to the mountain forests.

Michael म्हणाले...

One more time, then I'll stop. You do not shoot a gun. You shoot something (a target or the sky or the ground) with a gun. You fire a gun.

We have quail families. Two of them this year. The chicks are about 2 inches long last week. Last year the chicks were still yellow like chickens but the quail chicks are about an inch long.

I bought the flip belt you mentioned a while back and I like it for running, but my pistol won’t fit in it. I can pull down my shirt and pretend I don’t have a wallet though. I need to get a 5 shot .32 SW with a short barrel.

Where I live, just north of Boise, there are so many quail it seems they travel in herds.

Wild life is fun. Deer I got, in spades. Moving across my lawn at sunrise and dusk. Our daughter and family live in the city. Last week they spotted a fawn curled up at the base of their big maple tree. She called the DNR, thinking it was orphaned. No, she was told, the mother put the fawn there. In a safe spot. In the middle of a population of humans, because humans scare away predators. 4 hours later the doe came back, and they wandered off together.

Our son and family have a family of Fox playing in the back yard. They do border along a strip of woods, but still, fox are very skitterish. The family is having a great time watching them play.

With technology we have seen pictures and videos of all the fun. What a great time to be alive.

Ann’s in luck, Wisconsin is a “shall issue” state. Hurry, before they ban it for cis-het whites.

I see deer every morning when I walk our boxer. A doe and her fawn sleep somewhere nearby and they are in the yard next door or across the street every morning. This is inside the city limits of Austin, TX.

I was just sitting on the pier and had four in procession (I think they assign a point) splash out in the lake behind me, calmly take their drinks, stare me in the eye, nibble on the willow overhanging the lake, and then amble along the shoreline.

Yeah, they're tame.
