"Racial tragedies stoke pressure on Joe Biden to pick a nonwhite running mate."

A WaPo headline. The photo at the top shows Biden, at a debate, next to Kamala Harris. I was trying to think of a word to describe his gesture and demeanor. I could only think of "mansplaining." Is there a word "whitesplaining"? There's got to be.
Against this backdrop [the "explosive incidents involving race and police violence"], several nonwhite prospects have emerged from the pack. Top Biden allies see Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.), who is African American and Indian, as a leading contender. Biden has also said he is considering Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.). And Democratic leaders have suggested former Georgia gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams, Rep. Marcia L. Fudge (D-Ohio), Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.). Demings, Abrams and Fudge are black; Duckworth’s mother was Thai, and Cortez Masto, who said Thursday that she had removed herself from consideration, is Latina.
Is half Thai going to relieve the stoked pressure?

Biden really got himself cornered by already promising to pick a woman — otherwise black men would be in consideration. What about Cory Booker?!

From the Wikipedia article on Val Demings:
During Demings’s time helming the Orlando Police Department from 2007 to 2011, the police department continued a long record of excessive-force allegations and a lack of transparency dating from prior to and throughout her tenure as chief. From 2010 to 2014, the department paid out more than $3.3 million in damages in at least 47 lawsuits alleging false arrest, excessive force, and other complaints. A 2008 a Orlando Weekly expose described the Orlando Police Department as “a place where rogue cops operate with impunity, and there’s nothing anybody who finds himself at the wrong end of their short fuse can do about it.” Demings responded in a op-ed in the Orlando Sentinel, arguing that “Looking for a negative story in a police department is like looking for a prayer at church, “It won't take long to find one.” In the same op-ed she cast doubt on the veracity of witness videos as evidence when it conflicts with officers statements in excessive force cases, writing, “a few seconds (even of video) rarely capture the entire set of circumstances.” A 2016 Orlando Sentinel investigation found that in 2010, the last complete year Demings served as chief, the agency used force 20 percent more than officers in Baton Rouge, a similarly-sized city with a similar majority-minority population mix and a department about the same size.

In 2010, an Orlando police officer flipped and broke the neck of 84-year-old Daniel Daley after the man became belligerent, leaving him critically injured. Witnesses and Daley's family alleged excessive force and filed a lawsuit. The police department cleared the officer as "justified" in using a "hard take down" to arrest Daley, concluding he used the technique correctly even though he and the other officer made conflicting statements. Demings said “the officer performed the technique within department guidelines” and said they would launch a broader review of department procedures. A federal jury disagreed, ruling in Daley's favor and awarding him $880,000 in damages.
Hard to believe that Demings can be the choice with that in her record.

Kamala Harris proved herself to be inept in the role of candidate, but at this stage of play, she seems to be the last person available. Interesting for her. I was going to say lucky for her, but it won't be easy stepping into this role.

ADDED: This morning's WaPo also has a column by Val Demings, "My fellow brothers and sisters in blue, what the hell are you doing?":
When an officer engages in stupid, heartless and reckless behavior, their actions can either take a life or change a life forever. Bad decisions can bring irrevocable harm to the profession and tear down the relationships and trust between the police and the communities they serve. Remember, law enforcement needs that trust just as the public does. Think before you act! Remember, your most powerful weapon is the brain the good Lord gave you. Use it!...

Why do bad things happen? Bad mind, bad heart or bad policy?...  In Minnesota, we have no choice but to hold the officers accountable through the criminal-justice system. But we cannot only be reactive. We must be proactive. We must work with law enforcement agencies to identify problems before they happen. As a nation, we must conduct a serious review of hiring standards and practices, diversity, training, use-of-force policies, pay and benefits (remember, you get what you pay for), early warning programs, and recruit training programs....
The top-rated comment over there is: "Beautifully written. Joe Biden here is your Vice President."

Racial tragedies are fake for entertainment. Now it leads into more entertainment - must be a black woman VP. Can we find one who's literate or will we need an ebonics respresentative to the calm racial tension that we're stoking.

It's helped by blacks having a large proportion of not very bright people for the demonstrations. Passing up their free ticket to success - good character - for mayhem.

The stoking of resentment there is the chosen method to the stock narrative, which so far always sells eyeballs.

First thought is that Biden has cornered himself into selecting a token for VP. Kamala would demean herself by accepting the role, but she will of course take it if offered.

Second thought is that certain professions attract heros and a small number of sociopaths. Police, firemen, teachers, soldiers, doctors and nurses -- all have workers who get off on inflicting pain on those weaker than themselves.

The goal is to identify sociopathic behavior early and move those folks onto a different profession. (i.e. fire them)

Biden should put Tulsi Gabbard on the ticket. If you care about pigmentation, she's as dark as Kamala is. More importantly, her criminal justice positions are much stronger than Kamala, who was a prosecutor. And like many prosecutors, she was an unfair hard ass. (And a hypocrite). Most normal people are disgusted with a police officer essentially killing a man during arrest.
We are also disgusted with looting and vandalizing and burning and rioting as a reaction.

Many years ago, a young skinning poor white boy was run down by police near Waneka lake in Lafayette. His crime? Growing pot in the fields. He was from a broken family and nearly homeless while in high-school.

The police chased him, held him down, and tazed him. He died.

Ain't nobody rioting over poor skinny white boy.

Racial Tragedies? When did that happen? All that occurred was a policeman in one city in country of 320 million, put his knee on his suspect and said Suspect died. We don't even know what killed him, do we?

WE don't even know is the force used violated police guidelines or what 3 of the 4 other cops were doing. And 65% of crooks killed by the police are NOT black. There's a very simple question in relation to George Floyd:

Why was the officer fired instead of arrested and investigated?

This isn't complicated. And unfortunately, the "protests" - by which I mean huge riots - are muddying the actual issue.

I think it's looking like Stacey Abrams. Authentically African-American, and no record of law enforcement or prosecution "running up the convictions, and protecting the police." Both her parents are pastors, and even Trump has somehow dimly recognized that outreach to black churches might yield some votes. For Biden to win Georgia away from Trump would be a coup, and likely a sign that marginal states are going his way. I don't know if Kamala even makes a difference in California, which will go D in any case, and she has heavy negatives.

The question has come up on this blog before: the cities and states with large African-American populations have had a lot of African-American office holders for decades. If they have answers, where are the results? After all this, riots in Minneapolis, including the destruction of a police precinct? Remember "Fort Apache the Bronx," when the Bronx was some kind of extreme exception that would never come to the rest of the country? In Biden's chatter about blacks and criminal justice (the "you ain't black" conversation), and what a great guy he is, he says almost matter of factly people getting out of prison (he goes back and forth between all such people and black people) have three problems:

1. They were abused as children or their mothers were abused.
2. Can't read.
4. No job skills

Where does one start? Surely if schools can be built in Iraq, they can be built in Minneapolis and even poor old Detroit?

Wasn't there a person of color elected as president a while back who stopped all the racial division and unified the country after each violent racial abuse incident or interracial crime? Why no, there was NOT. There was, however, president who identified as Black who stoked racial animus and discord every opportunity he had, in order to drive division and racial and class hatred to the maximum possible amount. Wonder why he chose to do that? Oh, yeah, that's the same thing other members of his party, of all races, have done every chance possible.

To hell with them, to hell with that. To stop most real racism in the US, stop the government from treating people differently on the basis of their skin color.

Lurker21 म्हणाले...

Biden has painted himself into a corner with his promises, but just about any other old White guy Democrat would be in the same position. It's not that Biden needs to swing Black voters to his side. He has to get them to turn out to vote. It has to appear that he's on their side and living up to his promises. Probably the woman promise is more important than the person of color promise (and the latter may be at least as important to White progressives as it is to African-Americans).

Neither Abrams nor Harris is particularly likable. Abrams does have the advantage of being "authentically Black," and she isn't saddled with some of Harris's baggage. But Stacey Abrams really turns off a lot of White people. Reactions to Harris aren't as hostile or as visceral, so Harris is likely to be Biden's pick.

Note to future parents: If you want your child to go far in politics, don't give them a name like Stacy/Stacey or Cory/Corey. People get really sick of looking up the right spelling every time they type the name.

Kennedy/Humphrey would have lost Texas and maybe North Carolina. A third party candidate would have been likely and could have picked up enough electoral votes in the Deep South to deny Kennedy victory and throw the election into the House. The House and Senate were both controlled by the Democrats, but if Kennedy got fewer popular votes than Nixon, it would have been hard to justify putting him through. Not all of those Southern Democrats would have been on his side, either.

Even in our last election, it's not hard to think of VP picks who would have been worse than Pence and would have cost Trump the election. It also ought to be easy to think of candidates who would have helped Clinton more than Kaine did and enable her to carry the states necessary to win, but actually it isn't that easy. Maybe that's where the talk of the Democrats' "shallow bench" came from. One reason vice presidential selection doesn't seem to matter is that there may not be that many good choices available. Another is that until recently vice presidents were non-entities. It's true that VP picks rarely affect the election results, but these aren't ordinary times.

If the Republicans were really as intent on winning as their enemies think they are, they would market the Democratic Party as the "black people's party". Lots of non-black non-whites aren't thrilled by America's black people and especially don't want to be junior partners in a "blacks are first among equals" coalition. Republicans would do this, said Sailer, by highlighting how important and influential blacks are in the Democratic Party.
