Wash your hands and don’t touch your face. That’s your new normal. Get used to it. Or take the red pill and realize that this panic is bullshit and you can go back to your old life without freaking out because your kids can’t get or spread it and you already survived the first wave. But failing that epiphany you can still just wash your fucking hands and calm down.
Public restrooms are a petri disk of pathogens in normal times; this person is worrying about them now?
On a trip to Europe a few years ago (Italy I think) there were public toilets available in some spots that were separate structures, resembled a permanent, sort of port-o-potty. Large enough for just one adult and ADA-type accessible. For the cost of a euro you would enter the single user unit, do your business and exit. The next person was not able to enter - the door was locked - until the unit did some sort of automatic wash down.
Perhaps we need something like that here.

GoGirl Female Urination Device available you-know-where. Unfortunately, there's still a problem with Number Two.
How about stop being a ninny and get on with regular life. This whole thing was massively overblown from the beginning (except for already sick geriatrics), and we have been forced to go along like sheep to the slaughter (again, literally true for already sick geriatrics).
The risk to the VAST majority is minimal, at worst.
You women can't squat down and piss in the alley?
The American Hiking Society has recommended that people limit their walks to places in their neighborhoods, in part to avoid having to stop to answer nature’s call....
My wife and I have been doing that for years for just that reason. But we have a very walk-able neighborhood.
Howard Hughes had nothing on these Pandemic germaphobes. The method du jour for McDonalds on I-75 this weekend was that you can go inside and order a take out, and use the restrooms while you are there.
But one we stopped at yesterday refused all admittance to the inside. Not a good idea. And we could not find the drive thru toilets.
Sex, gender, and bathrooms. People... persons should be armed with surface disinfectant. The restaurants could also provide that service through a Planned Pathogen protocol: use+disinfect+use.
"Women need bathrooms much more than men do."
Please defend that ridiculous statement.
Hawkeye : And now for the moment no one has been waiting for: the Althouse sound-alike contest.
[Althouse passes him her hat]
Hawkeye : [imitating Althouse] My word, Hawkeye, this gender equity problem is most unseemly.
Maybe they could just open up without bathrooms and people would know in advance and make the decision not to go, or to wear Depends.'
Or, you don't use the bathroom if you are afraid. If people follow basic restroom hygiene, the diners who used the bathroom might be the cleanest at the table.
This is probably all moot. If there is no resurgence, all of this talk will seem silly. If infections/deaths go up again, none of these precautions will matter since dining in will not be an option.
Actually, I can't recall the time that the prospect of using a public restroom caused me to not patronize a place of business. Maybe it was because my childhood home had a shed used for storing lawn mowers and the like which had been a four-seater- two for each side. During my childhood, I occasionally used the four seats for what they were intended. Maybe because in Latin America I used restrooms with much lower sanitary standards, without any harm to my health.
The WaPo has the vapors.
"to find an entertainment option that would let her take her children, ages 11 and 13, out of the house safely."
It's already safe: has any kid anywhere suffered any complications due to WuFlu?
"'Bathrooms are a problem,' she said. 'They’re huge contact places, and if you’re shedding the virus, it’ll be all over"
Lots of assumptions here: that virus remains "active" on bathroom surfaces, that a lot of it gets on hands, that kids don't wash hands, that kids will stick hands in mouth or nose after visiting bathroom, that kids will then get sick.
The insanity epidemic has yet to subside.
"I'm surprised WaPo didn't bring up the gender equity problem: Women need bathrooms much more than men do."
They do? The only way I can see to defend this statement is it's easier for men to get away with public urination, but to my knowledge that's illegal.
When we're in public, I need to use the bathroom much more often than my wife.
Okay I can’t find the SCIENCE! referenced within this Chicken Little screed. Is the NYT not basing their WUFLU coverage on scientific fact already? We already in the FEELINGS state of the pandemic disconnected from facts?
Living in fear. What a great life we have here. Her kids are less likely to get the disease, less likely to have serious symptoms and less likely to die unless they have high risk conditions. They are probably more at risk in the travel TO the location than being exposed at a public bathroom.
"Maybe they could just open up without bathrooms and people would know in advance and make the decision not to go, or to wear Depends.'"
Maybe you could PRETEND they have no bathrooms so that the rest of us don't have to live your paranoia.
How about that, Snookums?
The insanity epidemic has yet to subside.
This
A First World Problem, wringing its hands like it's a Third World Problem.
The problem isn't public restrooms.
The problem is so many stupid people who are falling for a scam.
The only people who should be afraid of COVID-19 have underlying health issues and are elderly.
Kids and middle aged mothers have more to fear from the flu unless they are morbidly obese.
That is why democrat governors sought to make sure as many of people died as possible forcing COVID-19 positive patients into nursing homes and shut down schools.
This is an attack on our society and our economy.
It has nothing to do with preventing COVID-19 deaths.
"Stop normalizing this neurotic" No fucking shit. It's what progressives do. From normalizing she-males participating in women's sports to this latest covid-19 craze. They should really stay home until mommy tells them its "safe" and leave the rest of us the hell alone. So the premise of this story was how germ filled public toilets were? Who knew?
I always hate it when I have to hardin-out but this is such a typical example of irrational female hysterical behavior. For the children’s sake their father needs to (metaphorically) slap the mother and tell her to get ahold of herself, but he won’t.
I do have to limit my walks. In the pre-COVID days, I could enter a UW building -- like the Union -- if I had to go (and walking around for hours generally does cause this to happen!)
I have always assumed bathrooms (not just public ones!) are germ-filled, and I behave in such a way to mitigate risk. It's too had the Mom in this article expects the World to be safe for her darling children.
As noted above succinctly, the insanity epidemic has yet to subside.
No shit.
I said…"When we're in public, I need to use the bathroom much more often than my wife."
Clarification: I always need to use the bathroom more than my wife, in public or no. Something to do with a prostate. Stick that in your gender equity problem. ;-)
Why are there so few public bathrooms? Because people were using them for sex and/or drugs. And prosecuting people for this is now considered tacky.
So hold it. Unless you want to prosecute (and shame) people for using public bathrooms for sex and drugs.
Ha ha. We are part time Van Life people. Two-three nights camping in the big van and then a nice weekend in a hotel in the nearest small city. These days - and for the last couple of months - I've been using the big van for around town stuff and errands. It has a bathroom and neatly solves the problem of strange bathrooms, no bathrooms or port-a-lets. The significant other is most appreciative.
For the Karens: just remember to use the Amazon portal for Althouse.
WaPoop is perfectly positioned to deal with this topic. They shovel manure 24/7/365.
Well, public restrooms are often disgusting, but this is largely based on the status of the establishment. At the Ritz-Carlton? The john is very nice. At the AM-PM Mini Mart in downtown Oakland, off Broadway? Not so hot.
Grown adults who write for the WaPos are concerned with public bathrooms circa 2020?
Oy vey. These people are stupid. It's almost as if they were born Yesterday, and forgot 50 years of their own human history.
"Women need bathrooms much more than men do."
And here I thought men were more full of sh!t than women...
Guitar George knows all the..........bathrooms.
There's an American Restroom Association?
Talk about having a crappy job...
"Why are there so few public bathrooms? Because people were using them for sex and/or drugs. And prosecuting people for this is now considered tacky."
I don't know if it's that, or just the desire of local governments to shed themselves of a responsibility, but peeing on the road can a real problem. One of the things I love about New Zealand is every town you drive through has a public bathroom. What a concept!
Lifehack: You can spritz some hand-sanitizer on a paper towel and disinfect a toilet seat.
They shovel manure 24/7/365.
Shouldn't that be 24/7/52 or 24/365?
"Women need bathrooms much more than men do."
Please defend that ridiculous statement.
An olde comic by Kliban (or Gahan Wilson?) had a crew-cut guy blocking a restroom entrance and telling another guy that "a real man can hold his urine", and that's good enough for me.
Wear a codpiece - problem solved!
Can't wait for all the dire dire world's on fire to end with Biden's election.
Just do what the homeless do in all the big Democrat run cities, crap on the sidewalk.
Yeah - where can the women talk and put on make-up now?
Thanks Amadeus. I was waiting for the first “WaPoop”.

I've read recently that the number of people in the US, age 0-17, is in the low double digits, and about 1/5 the number of people, age 0-17, who have died from ordinary flu this year.
Children who get the disease w/o symptoms have such low viral loads they are not effective carriers of the disease.
Americans have always had a fear of contamination from public restrooms,' [said the president of the American Restroom Association.]

Essential worker, no doubt.
Did the WaPo explain why the lack of clean bathroom accommodations is Trump's fault?
I'm sure that they think it is, I'm just wondering if they've worked out how to blame him.
There have been a lot of stories like this, trying to make people fearful of resuming their normal lives. I'm assuming an ulterior motive. If people are afraid they're gonna die if they leave their homes, there is no chance of an economic recovery. As a good economy was Trump's strongest re-election argument, a really bad economy is obviously going to help Biden.
Plus, there's an added benefit for Democrats: more people in desperate circumstances will lead to more people dependent on government "help". People dependent on hand-outs will support whomever promises them the most free stuff. If you haven't noticed, Democrats just love to hand out free stuff.
1. There's an American Restroom Association?
2. I suppose I'd rather be the president than a recruiter.
3. My oldest sister lived in Philly after she married. When she had small children, they would make the drive to Pittsburgh to visit; about 7 hours. She would take a mason jar (the "pee jar") for the kids to use along the way.
For those who know Puerto Rico, I live in Fajardo. For those who don't, that is the NE tip.
Last week I had to visit a client in Mayaguez. That's on the SW corner and as far as you can go without a boat. About 140 miles driving. 3 to 3-1/2 hour drive.
And not a single restroom along the way due to the lockdown.
What a pain in the bladder that is.
John Henry
CDC has already said:
- feces and urine don't have viable virus in them
- surface contact is not a major spread factor
So, don't use a blower dryer. Wash your hands. If very paranoid, take some paper towels or the like to use when contacting door handles, toilet seats, etc.
More and more I find life imitating Seinfeld.
Just today with boogieman vs boogity man (Elain vs Kramer)
Now with bathrooms reminding me of George's obsessions.

There was a whole Larry Sanders episode about that. Larry needs to pee before the show but can't for some reason. Then every break he tries to use the pisser and something prevents him.

Covid-19 is heaven or hell for hypochondriacs. I'm not sure which. Maybe it's actually a little of both.
I wish more people landed somewhere between using the hammer of the state to lock us up in catacombs on the one hand and FREEEEDOMMMMM on the other, but these are the times we live in.
Non-lidded toilets probably and forced-air hand driers almost certainly pose a new threat to public health in public and widely-trafficked restrooms. I'll soon be driving from Northern Virginia to Pennsylvania to transport an elderly relatively elsewhere, and a restroom stop can hardly be avoided--certainly not for my relative. Are all those hand-driers going to be ripped out or unplugged? It is to laugh.
I'm a Trump voter and almost certainly will pull that lever again, and I think we have to start opening things back up again, one way or another. But it would be nice if fewer people were so cavalier about killing my relative--or me, I'm no kid either.

Fox News had the story of a 17 year old from Georgia who died from COVID last weekend. While few details were available, it appears this person had other health issues. For example, some kids get cancer. Chemotherapy or stem cell transplants can seriously weaken your immune system. It's rare for someone that young to die from COVID. For example, 13% of all the confirmed cases of COVID in Alabama involved young people aged 0-24 but not one of them has died from it.
More and more I find life imitating Seinfeld.
The hitchhiker's guide to chaos ("life").
If only they designed bathrooms with sinks to wash your hands as the last thing you do.
I'll note on cruise ships, to placate these "but what about" scenarios; they put hand sanitizer stations just outside the bathroom. Thus after you wash your hands, and used the kick plate on the outward opening door to leave the bathroom; you can then add a little hand sanitizer, if you accidentally touched the door.
Re: Clyde
Yes. I used a restaurant bathroom just today and did exactly that. It was a very nice toilet, though -- looked like a deluxe Toto model with the automatically opening lid and everything. They had a sanitizer bottle there just for that purpose.
And then I used my own portable sanitizer after I sat back down at the table.
Not sure how comfortable I would be with a US bathroom, though. The toilets at my office are all open top, and I don't think it would be too easy to redo them. I'm months away from returning to the US, though, so hopefully the plague will have died down to the point we don't need to take such pains.
Guys can zip into an alley.

So I guess this means glory holes are out now. Sad.
"it would be nice if fewer people were so cavalier about killing my relative--or me"
Oh..you sound reasonable.
The press has gone all in on fear porn.
Unlike others, I'm not going to accuse them of doing it just to defeat Trump. I refuse to believe that anybody (other than a few rare sociopaths) would deliberately try to tank the economy and cause harm to millions just to get Joe Biden elected.
I assume they're doing it because it sells papers (or gets clicks).
Either way, what is in their interest is not in your interest. If you must read their articles, adjust your mindset accordingly.
SLO county has had a total of 259 cases (234 recovered), one death, and only one new case since the 22nd. Time to open up.
God please spare us from this plague of Marching Karens. For they are an enemy of the People.
The way I see it Karen's have several choices:
1-they can stay sheltered until V-Covid 19 Day.
2-they can put on depends and ask their doctors for a prescription to calm the urge to urinate and take imodium before they go out.
3-they can carry hand sanitizers, Lysol spray and Lysol wipes and paper towels.
4-snap out of the crazy and live life as a normal, non-neurotic person.
Please defend that ridiculous statement.
I've NEVER heard a woman say, "The world is my urinal!!".
The biggest problem, by far, is the Utter Panic, and the Karens convincing themselves that "nothing will EVER BE THE SAME".
I've given up trying to explain it to my family. They shriek whenever I start pointing out WuFlu isn't nearly as dangerous as they believe.
People really want to hold on to their terror that badly.

We can buy UV-C light bulbs on Amazon for $50 each. Wouldn't you feel safer basking in sterile #PurpleZone? Unfortunately, they're predominately made in China.
Trump could force GE, Sylvannia, etc to make the bulbs that will reverse the virus paradigm. In the past, populated spaces bred disease. Now they won't. At all.
Will this impact flu and cold season as well as covid? Yes.
I put up a little video on YouTube to get us going.

I've had to renovate more than my fair share of public restrooms as a construction PM and I always thought the "ass gaskets" or disposable paper toilet seat covers where a quaint accessory. It's the filth underneath the rim that will get you. I can imagine that industry will see a huge boost as they only seem to be required in ADA compliant stalls.
Western progressives fighting to bring the binjoditch to the New World...
But it would be nice if fewer people were so cavalier about killing my relative--or me, I'm no kid either.
So, you'll be driving 15 mph on that trip to Pennsylvania? Any faster and you're at risk.
My doctor friends have told me there is no such great danger.
Wash your hands.
Don't be stupid.
The Leftist Collectivists are stupid.
Used to drive frequently from San Diego to Vallejo. As you left LA there weren't a lot of restrooms. Heading north, a short while north of LA but well past any rest stops there was a copse, maybe a dozen or so trees, 50 yards of so off the highway. There were often cars pulled off right there, and sometimes mine was one of them. Some of the most watered trees in California, watered with essential nutrients needed for healthy tree growth. I rarely saw women watering the trees. But they could if they wanted to....
I imagine there are other rest stops like that across the nation, but that's the only one like that I've used on a regular basis.
Last summer I hiked and camped on the top of Mount Herman in Colorado. Challenging 2 mile trail. Our small group was the only one bringing up tents that day. Lots of women on the trail. By the end or the day, every one of them must have used the great outdoors as their restroom at least once.
Porcelain potties are an amenity of modern life. I do prefer them. Sinks are nice. Air dryers have been installed in most restrooms by insistence of environmentalists. "Save the trees!" Health hazards compared to paper towels? Forget it- it's only humans, a cancer upon the Earth. And a note on paper products- they come mostly from fast growing pines grown in managed forests for the specific purpose of- making paper. They don't come from old growth redwood.
Sort of like the recent discover during the covidiocy that reusable shopping bags are a health hazard- one time use plastic bags are much healthier.
The gender equity problem: Women need bathrooms much more than men do. Do they? Or does it just seem that way?
Maybe the San Fran Public Poopers were ahead of their time.
First don't be such a wuss. Things have not changed that much and, as someone noted above, if you used a public bathroom before the Wuhan Flu you were probably bombarded with as much nasty stuff then as you will be now. My wife filled two small (2 inch?) spray bottles with hand sanitizer that we carry with us in the car or in pocket as need be. Very simple to sanitize your hands any time you think you should even though you begin to feel a bit OCD-ish.
The point has been to take appropriate personal steps to protect yourself. Be adults. If there are smaller children I your respective lives, look out for them. Tolerate as much risk as seems reasonable.
Why must the argument constantly be made that only the two extremes deserve a hearing?

The numbers are small in scale, but at least double what are cited in that article that came up from May 14. Known cases in both the UK and USA; so presumably elsewhere as well. A tricky condition that wasn't understood at first.

I just realized - what ever happened to the panic from public health 'experts' about overuse of sanitizing products and how it will lead to 'super bugs' as common bacteria adapt?
Guess they missed on that one, now that we are all bathing in sanitizer twice or thrice a day.....

They would have to be ladylike and wear dresses or skirts. Curiously, that's why women wore skirts.
More people have gotten sick eating lettuce than using a public toilet.
I would wager this person interviewed would not think twice about finding a nursing home for a parent, but worries about some nebulous danger lurking in a bathroom. Maybe teach the pre-teens how to wash their hands. I am getting tired of having others irrational delusions foisted on me.
Before covid, you were at a higher risk of contracting an infection visiting a friend or family member in a hospital, that using the bathroom at a crack house.
There's this thing called skin that protects people from most of the germs in a public restroom, and there is soap to deal with the others. In addition, almost every business that is open is going overkill on cleaning and sanitizing, so that restroom is probably much less an issue now than it would have been at any point in the last several decades. And of course, for those seriously concerned, how hard is it to carry some wipes and Lysol if the need arises? Seriously, when I traveled in Italy, a roll of toilet paper was always on my person in case needed due to knowledge about how Italians operated public restrooms (travel tip - it was needed at least once).
There really shouldn't be a push to make sure all of society stays closed just because some people don't feel safe with it re-opening. Those who do not feel safe always have the option to stay home, while those who are fine with the risk ought not be prevented from getting on with life.
When I was in Antigua, I was walking past Barclays Bank when I saw a local woman hike up her skirt, pull her panties aside, and urinate in the gutter. No one else seemed to take any notice.
Blowing what germs? The ones that someone failed to wash off when they got their hands wet to need a hand blower? These people are hysterical and failing to keep their wits about them.
The effectiveness of hand-dryers in spreading virus (and bacteria) in restrooms was well-established before the pandemic, as a simple google search will show. This was not a controversial position, except to hand-dryer manufacturers.
I am getting tired of having others irrational delusions foisted on me.
@iowan2, you are not the only one.
Thirty years ago, as a newly minted PhD from the University of Washington, my first project sponsored by the City of Seattle was a needs and siting assessment for restroom availability in the downtown grid. A charrette was simultaneously sponsored for students at the School of Architecture to come up with designs for what public restrooms could look like for pedestrian access. They ranged from elegant to the portable toilet required at public gatherings and construction sites. The City managers and the mayor thanked us for our efforts but said no.
Thirty years later, citizens and city planners decry the Deplorables for leaving filth and needles on the open sidewalks--neither toilets nor bio-hazard containers are in sight. Solution: blame the victims.
OK, see. You make a device, see. Four sturdy hooks, right? Four thin but strong straps. Still with me. A nylon hoop at the end of the straps. Get where I'm going? Adjusters for length on each strap. There you are.
Hook the four straps to the top of the partition wall right? Right. Adjust the strap length until the hoop is just above the toilet seat.
Then do your business while day dreaming of carefree childhood days on a swing.
I've NEVER heard a woman say, 'The world is my urinal!!'."
Of course not! They say, "I'd like to speak the the manager!"
The only people whose demise we're cavalier about are those who think our doings in Washington State are going to endanger them way over there in NoVa.
I'm an "essential" worker and work around town, occasionally drive to Colorado to work there. Back home, we have a convenience store chain with very nice bathrooms. No one does drugs or has sex in those bathrooms. On the highway, my normal emergency stop (NcDonalds) is no more, but the rest stops are still open and the truck stops are still open. Some of us just don't have the option to go home for that.
