"Now, I wrote something off the cuff, if I can read this," said the My Pillow guy. "Okay," said Trump.

Mike Lindell, the My Pillow guy, was there at the Task Force press briefing yesterday, and he delivered his prepared remarks, about how his company was helping — putting 75% of its manufacturing capacity into cotton face masks. But then he wanted to add something that — presumably — nobody had checked out. Trump said "Okay."

Lindell laughed and plunged straight into religion and politics:
God gave us grace on November 8th, 2016, to change the course we were on. God had been taken out of our schools and lives. A nation had turned its back on God. And I encourage you: Use this time at home to get — home to get back in the Word, read our Bibles, and spend time with our families. Our President gave us so much hope where, just a few short months ago, we had the best economy, the lowest unemployment, and wages going up. It was amazing. With our great President, Vice President, and this administration and all the great people in this country praying daily, we will get through this and get back to a place that’s stronger and safer than ever.
Trump said:
That’s very nice. Thank you very much. Thank you, Mike. Appreciate it.... I did not know he was going to do that, but he’s a friend of mine, and I do appreciate it. Thank you, Mike, very much.
Trump did not know he was going to do that, but he's a friend of Trump's, so Trump must have known religion was coming. Religion is one thing, but this felt too much like campaigning — campaigning with religion. Trump said "okay" — go "off the cuff" — but he "did not know he was going to do that." Okaaaay.

The press briefings should not devolve into testimonials to the greatness of the President. Yes, there can be some room to get a little personal, to express some love, and it's fine to speak of God and prayers — a bit. Not too much. But we can't be having that Mypillowism every day.

For some reason, this subject reminded me of the trouble Trump had with the wind blowing his hair. (The head/pillow connection?) At the beginning of the event — in the Rose Garden — the wind was blowing briskly, pulling the long strands of Trump hair away from the usual stuck-together shape. He said: "And we’ve opened up — whoops, there goes our box" — the President had just done an unboxing of a new testing device — "And my hair is blowing around, and it’s mine. The one thing you can’t get away with. If it’s not yours, you got a problem, if you’re President."

Yeah, if it’s not yours, you got a problem, if you’re President. It's just awful when the President's toupee goes flying in the wind. Which President wore a toupee? I don't mean those openly wiggy wigs the first few Presidents wore. I mean the hairpiece that is supposed to deceive us. I tend to think it hasn't been done yet, but if anyone did, I'm going to guess Reagan.

The problem was not religion, it's the flattering of Trump. Uncalled for and kinda obnoxious, under the circumstances. These briefings are not supposed to antagonize half the country, and Donald Trump knows that; this guy didn't.
Okay, but he's a good guy who's trying to help, and hopefully most enemies of Donald Trump will understand that and shake it off. Hopefully.

If that's true, Lindell has come a long way, and it sounds as though the Bible and Christian beliefs helped make that journey. Hence the reference to God.

Lindell's comments don't bother me. I read the Los Angeles Times--or at least glance at it. Some things are just too hard to bear. Like Ivory Soaps "99.4% Pure", 99.4% of the content of the Times is filled with pure hatred of Trump. I sure wouldn't see Lindell's comments in the paper--instead I read Virginia Heffernan's statement that Trump's corona virus response is "a firehose of lies". A little balance is not a bad thing, even if I will only hear of it when our host mentions something with which she's disappointed.

Reagan's hair was due to excellent genetics, in both thickness and in color. He always had a somewhat low hairline, almost, but not quite, too low to be handsome. The pic of the younger Reagan in the link shows him with swooping Hollywood hair, appearing to somewhat heighten his forehead, and giving him something like a widow's peak. In the other pic it looks like his hairline is TOO low, especially for his age, although not nearly to the Judge Napolitano/werewolf level.

I believe his hair was natural. Both my grandfathers, my uncle, and my father were very old when they died, and each had a lifetime full head of hair. My father's hairline was "better", or lower, than mine, similar to Reagan's. I have a a high hairline, a fivehead, if you will, but full up top, with no bald patch. My brothers actually got it slightly worse, despite both our grandfathers, but they're still not quite bald. There must be a baldness gene lurking from my mother's side, and she had no brothers.

Did Reagan dye his hair? I think he lucked out genetically in hair color, retaining his dark hair well past the point when others go completely white, but he may have had it touched up a bit, especially later on. Some people are lucky that way.

So a guy with a family diner and forty employees makes less money per year than a building inspector working 30 hours per week, 46 weeks per year. Full disclosure. I do have a MY Pillow. It's great and I don't sleep on anything else now. For years I had regular neck pain, that I just assumed, and my doctor told me, was just something I have to get used to. It's been gone since I started using this pillow. Maybe just a coincidence. His pillow is one of those great ideas that is so simple that you can't believe nobody did it before. It's just chopped up foam in a sleeve, but it does everything they claim, and could there be an easier product to manufacture?

John Wayne wore a toupee from about 1948 on. But he never denied it, and in fact made a joke about it when a reported once asked him about his "phony" toupee. "It's not phony," he responded. "It's real hair."

John Wayne doesn't count, becuase he's John Wayne. The horses were afraid to knock it off.

One of my old lefty friends called yesterday, before the presser.

He's the kind of liberal that knew Obama was just pretending to be religious because presidents have to, and it comforted my friend to think that . . .

I think there's an interesting cleavage in American politics--

Ambitious politicians MUST adhere to a name brand faith. On the Left, certain faiths are more equal than others, and some lefties take comfort, like my friend, in the thought that their favorites just pretend to believe all that; while actually religious lefties strenuously insist that of course the proclaimed faith of their favorites is genuine, and the purest expression of love and Godliness to be found . . .

On the Right, it's true also that some faiths are more equal than others, but I see the tendency there towards big-tent but quite explicit Judeo-Christianism, with tolerance (for
now) of individual disbelief as long as it speaks softly.

As a deist, I really have no skin in this game. I don't believe in religion, but I respect those who do. But I do believe in a creator. I also believe that organized religion (or some form of authoritarian external motivator) is necessary for large numbers of humans to live close together.

However I have never understood the contempt that atheists feel for religious people. (at least Christians) Frankly there is far more evidence for the existence of a creator (who some call God) than evidence that there is no creator. It should also be noted that most of the early great scientists were religious people, they were the ones who had the resources to devote to science.

Science and religion are both attempts to explain our existence, neither is infallible.

I generally find religious people to be much better friends and neighbors than atheists. While I have met some religious assholes, I have met far more atheists who are.
