"Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), who faces a tough reelection race in Alabama, will vote to convict President Donald Trump on both articles of impeachment."

Politico reports.
“Senators are elected to make tough choices. We are required to study the facts of each issue before us and exercise our independent judgment in keeping with the oaths we take. The gravity of this moment, the seriousness of the charges, and the implications for future presidencies and Congresses all contributed to the difficulty with which I have arrived at my decision," Jones said in a statement.
I assume that's it for Doug Jones as a Senator from Alabama.

ADDED: I guess he was already expecting to lose his seat, which he took over when Jeff Sessions got up for a moment to go be Attorney General. Jeff's ready to sit down again, so it was time to get up and out of there anyway.

The voters will kill him November if he votes to convict.
The Left will kill him right now if he votes to acquit.

Either way, he's screwed.

Bullshit. If he were at all concerned with implications for future presidencies and congress, he would vote to acquit. And what the fuck is "seriousness of the charge? That has no bearing on innocence or guilt. Ugh.

Chris: "And what the fuck is "seriousness of the charge?"

"The seriousness of the charge" was first used as a rhetorical/political trick/ploy by the democratics and lefty media when it was used to call for investigation into Reagan over the hoax "October Surprise" lefty/LLR-lefty lie that Reagan had conspired with the Ayatollah to purposely hold American hostages longer in order to help Reagan beat Carter.

Essentially, treason. Sound familiar?

The democrat Speaker of the House and other democrat leaders admitted that there was not a single shred of actual evidence that anything like this occurred. However, they then argued the "seriousness of the charge" REQUIRED them to investigate.

This is the genesis of the dems making official their future plans to always go after any and all republicans not on evidence but on any charge they deemed seriousness enough.

Neat huh?

Even better for dems, those "serious" evidence-free charges can be culled from anonymous media reports.

Sounding more familiar now, isnt it?

So the dems and their deep state pals work together to plant stories in the lefty press and whammo! Investigation!!

And when nothing real is found in these "investigations", well! That just means there's a coverup.

Sounding extremely familiar now, isn't it?

In algebra it means you have more equations than variables. it can lead to contradictions.
o a^2+b^2=25
o a^2-b^2=7
o a=4,b=3 is the ONLY solution to first 2 eqns
o a-b=2 overdetermines and contradicts

He doesn't have a chance to get reelected anyway, so this was an obvious decision for him. He was free to vote his "conscience," i.e., to please liberals and CNN/MSNBC viewers. He'll be a paid contributor on those cable news networks and he'll also land a cushy sinecure at some university. This was a no-brainer.

The other two Democrats thought to be on the fence, Manchin and Sinema, are safe from reelection until 2024. So they'll just do what they think is right. I expect Manchin will acquit because he likes Trump and in any event West Virginia overwhelmingly wants Trump to stay in power. Sinema, who knows? She's fairly clever and obviously likes to have influence with Republicans. So I don't think she'll vote to convict. Can she abstain?

Static Ping म्हणाले...

The only chance Jones had of winning another term was (a) to switch parties or (b) run against Roy Moore again. Apparently, he had enough principles to stay a Democrat and, given Moore or anyone like Moore is not going to be the Republican nominee, he is almost certainly going to lose and probably lose badly. Most likely he is voting the way that he best sees still having a future career in politics.

Frankly, he should be thrilled he was ever the Senator from Alabama in the first place.

Alabamians know Roy Moore at lot better than you d;, they know he was impeached twice as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court because he violated his oath of office, they know he is an embarrassment to the state and that we had a choice between having him elected and, given the advantages of the incumbent, probably be stuck with him for many years to come, or have to put up with Jones for a couple of years. Jones was always a dead man walking, and this vote just puts the final nail in his coffin. His only chance was to lay very low, vote against his party on significant issues, and hope enough Alabamians were fooled into thinking he wasn't going to immediately revert to being a solid Democrat vote for the next 6 years. Pelosi screwed any hope Jones had by going forward with a sham impeachment that was doomed to fail from the start.

I don't know whether the allegations of sexual misconduct against Moore are true or not, but he is a demagogue who I'm glad will never be a US Senator from my state.
