"It is the last decision I wanted to take. The personal consequences, the political consequences that fall on me as a result of that are going to be extraordinary."

"Yeah, it's going to get very lonely. And again, the consequences are significant. ... There has not been a morning since this process began that I slept beyond 4 a.m."

Said Mitt Romney, reflecting on what it will mean for him, now that he's decided to vote to convict President Trump.

ADDED: Quick! Mitt! Change parties. Become a Democrat, and go for the nomination for President this year.

Romney only sought a role within the Trump administration so that he could help remove Trump from within.

When Trump kicked him to the curb Romney then signed onto the Senate race in Utah in order to play "Howard Baker" in removing Trump.

Romney completely believed every Russia collusion hoax lie McCain fed him and even after the hoax was exposed new dangers to Romney and his sons and staff connections to Ukrainian energy interests made removing Trump even more critical for him.

So here we are today.

It turns out that Mitt Romney is as small a man as we had begun to suspect. Given his educational background, he should be too smart to be gulled by the arguments the Dems have been making. This vote is pure revenge for the way he perceives he has been treated by Trump. The vote only confirms that, once again, Trump is a lot better judge of character than those of us who voted for this Lilliputian.

He's rich, bored and doesn't like Trump, so he "voted" for removal, when you need 67 votes to remove. Big deal.

So now, he's a profile in courage to the Dems and the media, big whoop.

If he runs for Prez to actually challenge Trump, that would require some testicles.

Romney believed what he was told about Trump by McCain and others in DC: Trump was a traitor and likely would not last 6 months before he was removed from office.

Romney no doubt believed he could play a key role and perhaps find his way to the White House via the Gerald Ford path.

And that's still true today in my estimation.

I'm much more on the more moderate side than many other commenters here (I very much relate to the good Prof as a genuine swing voter who regularly splits the ballot between Ds & Rs). After voting third party in the last presidential election, I'm likely voting Trump this election.

Do politicos genuinely believe that voters are going to say "well I was for Trump, but now that a Rep. who famously hates him voted for removal that's out of the question"?

The average person wasn't paying attention before because there's no chance of removal. They'll look at this and see that the results are in line with what they expected and they'll have forgotten this occurred by Friday (maybe Saturday if Trump really goes on a Twitter tear).

Incidentally I think Romney's decision to go in front of a camera almost immediately undermines his points and likely reinforces the view amongst Trump fans that this was more about being liked by the media than following his conscience.

Re: TJM:

Last week Pierre Delicto voted for more witnesses because the Dems did not make their case but this week, without the witnesses, he can vote to convict?

Yeah, if we suppose he's acting in good faith, though, I would imagine he's basically treating the Senate's decision (with the encouragement of the President's counsel) not to seek witnesses the same way an assertion of the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination would be treated in a civil proceeding, i.e. drawing the adverse inference.

I don't think that's the right way to analyze it, but I don't really have a firm basis for saying so, because as far as I can tell, it's literally whatever the Senate wants to do, and Senators can vote on whatever grounds they choose. They could look to the I Ching if they wanted.

All that said, though, the entire impeachment on the abuse of power charge is quite amorphous, so one could also take the position that the facts established are sufficient to prove an "abuse of power" sufficient to warrant removal. The fact that Democrats all voted that they needed more evidence certainly suggests otherwise, but thinking about this all as though it were logical is an exercise in futility, even moreso than ordinary legal reasoning.

Listen to this Romney egotism:

Voters will make the final decision, just as the President’s lawyers have implored. *My* vote will likely be in the minority in the Senate.

But irrespective of these things, with *my* vote, *I* will tell *my* children and their children that *I* did my duty to the best of *my* ability, believing that *my* country expected it of *me*.

*I* will only be one name among many, no more or less, to future generations of Americans who look at the record of this trial. They will note merely that *I* was among the senators who determined that what the President did was wrong, grievously wrong.

We’re all footnotes at best in the annals of history. But in the most powerful nation on earth, the nation conceived in liberty and justice, that is distinction enough for any citizen.

It is up to the House to call witnesses to make their case, then present the evidence to the Senate. For whatever reason, the House did not want to call Bolton. I would imagine they thought Bolton wouldn't say anything bad about Trump.

To now say, that it was the Republicans in the Senate for not calling Bolton as a witness is nothing but nonsense. Besides, the Democrats didn't have the votes to call any witnesses before the Senate. That's why the Dems in the House should have called Bolton as a witness.

Why can't some people not understand this?

As if he was popular before this. Jezz Louise. Meanwhile before this dramatic rendition of his horrible personal struggle over this decision, poor guy, I read his written statement explaining his decision. He actually based his decision on a defense of the Bidens. Strange indeed. He bends over backwards to give a break to Joe and Hunter Biden, but of course can't give Trump any consideration.

Romney says, "The President's counsel noted that Vice President Biden appeared to have a confict of interest when he undertook an effort to remove the Ukrainian Prosecutor General. If he knew of the exorbitant compensation his son was receiving from a company actually under investigation, the Vice President should have recused himself. While ignoring a conflict of interest is not a crime, it is surely very wrong. [As if Joe Biden had no idea of the compensation, as if he had no idea of the reason for the compensation.]

With regards to Hunter Biden, taking excessive advantage of his father's name is unsavory but also not a crime. Given that in neither the case of the father nor the son was any evidence presented by the President's counsel that a crime had been committed, the President's insistence that they be investigated by the Ukrainians is hard to explain other than as a political pursuit.[As if the President's team was expected to provide evidence to convict the Bidens] There is no question in my mind that were their names not Biden, the President would never have done what he did."

Romney is so biased against Trump that his judgement is pathetic or he's just the biggest liar we have ever seen.

I don't understand Manchin's vote. If he wanted merely to censure Trump, then he should have voted to acquit. You only vote to convict if you believe the President must be removed, an extreme measure that partially invalidates the last election. There's no compromise to be had. If you feel he must be removed, you vote to remove.

Senators are not simply "convicting." They're also "sentencing." The ultimate sentence of removal is the bottom line.

She pretended to read and not care what he said, but then would give these coy glances his way. She poutingly refused to stand up for many occassions. She in a huff made it a point to tear up the speech. It was very childish but almost playful in a way. I wonder if she had a sex dream about President Trump? I mean he is a very charismatic guy, who is incredibly powerful, and he is fairly tall. She wouldn't be the first person whose passions grew out of a tense working relationship.

ii) Have you ever actually seen the shitty buildings he built in NY? Tacky makes brutalism look good.

I have seen his Trump building in Chicago and it is a fairly nice looking building. But I haven't seen his New York things. Having seen one picture of a personal apartment of his, which seemed to have gold leafed and gold filigreed everything I would not not be surprised if lots of his buildings were gaudy and gauche. For which I'm pleased to hear about the preference for classical, because that seems like a pretty safe style to me. And I wouldn't be upset if Classical architecture became a sort of brand or trade dress for Federal buildings. And perhaps I'm inferring too much here, but it appears that we at least agree that Brutalism is no good.
