3rd and 4th places go to Biden (15%) and Warren (12%), and both of them are moving downward — Biden down 9 points and Warren down 5. Buttigieg and Klobuchar are both below 10% — the cut-off point for qualifying for the debate if you're qualifying on national polls.
(You can also qualify for this debate by hitting 12% in 2 polls from SC or Nevada or by having already won a delegate. Buttigieg, Sanders, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden have all won delegates — 23, 21, 8, 7, and 6, respectively.)
High stakes for tomorrow's debate! This is where people will decide if Bloomberg deserves to become the focus of all the stop-Bernie action. If he doesn't, that action will continue to be diffused over 5 candidates, unless one of the other 4 — Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar, or Biden — suddenly emerges as the one to back. It's hard to see how anyone other than Bloomberg has a shot at becoming The One, so the anti-Bernie anti-Trumpsters have got to be looking at Bloomberg with an absurd amount of expectation.
It's hard to see how he can do well enough in the debate for that to happen. I think the 5 — that is, all the Democratic non-Bernies — will simply try to keep a majority away from Bernie and position themselves to win at the convention. That's 5 months away. And then there are only 3 1/2 months before the election. Democrats need a way to get through the next 5 months without devolving into brand-destroying chaos. Unless Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden get together and pick one of them to go forward, the answer is going to be Bloomberg.
Unless he's awful at that debate.
And won't Buttigieg, Sanders, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden all try to make him look awful?
I would advise Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden to get together and pick one. But they need to do it soon. If I picture those 4 huddling and really trying to decide which of the 4 of them should take up the banner of moderate anti-Trumpism, I see the choice as Amy Klobuchar. She's the best age (59), she's female, and she's got a long record in the Senate. But that's too sensible, isn't it? The Democrats are so keyed up to fight that they're not going to accept mere sensibleness.
And yet mere sensibleness is also all Bloomberg purports to be. But he's spending billions to make that feel good, good enough to let go of the crazy excitement that is Bernie Sanders.
And Donald Trump.
Here's an article at Politico about Bloomberg's debate prep:
[H]is team is working to get him to project comfort and composure in the line of fire, while portraying him as the toughest Democrat to take on Donald Trump. Howard Wolfson, the veteran Democratic strategist who joined Bloomberg’s orbit in 2009 after working on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential race, is playing the role of Sanders... Wolfson joked that his inspiration for Sanders came from watching “Statler and Waldorf,” the cantankerous elderly Muppets who lob critiques from their balcony seats...How much did Bloomie pay him for that?
Bloomberg is trying to hone a crisp and energetic appeal to voters that will contrast with Biden— another white, male septuagenarian on stage, according to advisers. Other potential pitfalls for Bloomberg are his tendency to use dated language — words like “bawdy,” for instance — to dismiss concerns about his financial news service’s work culture for female employees....So.... understanding the sexual harassment problem as a problem of using "dated language" and understanding one's opponents in terms of really old TV puppet shows. You can have billions of dollars to spend but you can only buy what's out there for sale. And Bloomberg — who, if elected, will make a lot of hiring decisions — found Wolfson, the man who helped Hillary lose.

Watching the Democrats destroy themselves with their identity politics obsessions is amusing and gratifying.
We will find out if Mike is taller than Amy.
It's all show. The super delegates will decide, and I doubt that person is currently campaigning.
The Muppets are forever young.
They always leave the x out of the name of that poll pairing.

Won't it come down to money? The non-Bernie/Bloomie's won't have enough for them all to keep going for months. Unless the Clinton fundraising machine is fired up post haste.
I haven’t watched any dem debates. (Thanks to Althouse er al for doing it for me!) Has any moderator ever asked a tough question, a gotcha question? Will anyone call Bloomberg tomorrow night on his remarks about minorities a la Megyn Kelly and Trump?

Althouse’s insights noted in this morning’s Wall Street Journal:
Notable & Quotable: How Will Bloomberg Debate
https://www.wsj.com/articles/notable-quotable-how-will-bloomberg-debate-11581974285
He’s a fool for taking the debate stage because there’s no upside. If he’s having to ‘hone’ crisp and energetic then he has already lost.
I vote for Amy for President of the PTA
What Beasts of England said, he beat me to it.
He’s a fool for taking the debate stage because there’s no upside
Much like Hillary, the more you see of Bloomberg the less you see to try and like...
I would advise Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden to get together and pick one. But they need to do it soon.
Of course, they all think that they should be the one. It's like that scene in on of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies where all the pirates always vote for themselves as Pirate King.
Drudge had an article this morning about 17,000 people at a Bernie rally.
That is not surprising, he does this kind of routinely
What was REALLY surprising to me was seeing it published for the world to see.

It's easier to pick up chicks...votes.
It's hard to see how anyone other than Bloomberg has a shot at becoming The One,
After all, Bloomberg represents EVERYTHING that the democrat party is today:
The party of the Billionaires... Check
The party that thinks ALL Crime is the nigga's fault... Check
The party that thinks the Only people as STUPID as blue collars; are farmers... Check
The party that wants to tell you what you are allowed to drink, smoke, eat, think...Check
OH! And the party that thinks that the ONLY thing that makes women better than computers,
is that women Can; and WILL go down on you
Bloomberg!
John Henry, why do you read Drudge?
Klobuchar isn't going to win. If she'd actually won Iowa or New Hampshire, maybe. But she didn't.
You have to win to win.
She couldn't win before Bloomberg and his ad buys showed up, but she's going to start winning now? In the South? When she couldn't win Iowa?
Klobuchar potentially puts Minnesota in play, but that's also true if she's Bloomberg's running mate. And that's why no one is going to attack him too hard -- none of the other non-Sanders candidates really think they can win, and they want to be VP or in a Cabinet position in case some other Democrat somehow beats Trump. So they can't burn any bridges.
Trump didn't have to make that calculation in 2016. He knew that no other Republican would hire him, and he didn't want to be Secretary of Whatever anyway. So he was freed to be as brutal as he needed to be to kill off his opponents.
For the umpteenth time:
What makes a female superior to a man with the same qualifications?
Female candidates appeal to white suburban women.
And Bloomberg — who, if elected, will make a lot of hiring decisions — found Wolfson, the man who helped Hillary lose.
It's hard to blame Wolfson- Hillary didn't need help losing. It's no coincidence Bloomberg hired a Hillary henchman. That will become more clear later...
Am I the only one?
Nope.
"Wolfson, the man who helped Hillary lose." Actually that crack about Statler and Waldorf was pretty funny. And it's silly to think that everyone who worked for Hillary must be incompetent. Could be one of them was competent and helped her a lot, but she had some structural problems that took her down. Which of course she did.
Given the huge ego required to run for president I seriously doubt several candidates are getting together and plotting strategy as a team.
Uh, Hillary didn't lose in 2008. She got the shit kicked out of her by Barack Hussein Obama.
It is true, however blow-me gets a huge pass on his peccadilloes because Democrat. Is it just me or does anyone else think that a peccadillo is a very small steely Dan design for use on a very petite woman?
Project unity or fight for the nomination? Tomorrow should be a train wreck. Nice!
Klo-mentum seems to be the ability to hover in the high single digits, to cling tenatiously to 4th place, at least pre-Bloomberg. Would anyone be talking her performance up if she were a man? Even Althouse can come up with nothing more than sex, age, and length of utterly undistinguished service
and she's got a long record in the Senate.
she was elected in 2006, reelected in 2012, and again in 2018
That's 14 years, that's not long for the House (the average House tenure is 20+ years)....
By What Stretch of the imagination is 14 years "a long record in the Senate"?
Would anyone be talking her performance up if she were a man
For those with a desire for less batshit crazy she seems less batshit crazy.
Am I the only one?
No.
A pollster walks into a bar and the bartender says, "Hi, what'll you have?" and the pollster says "I'll ask the questions around here!"
So that's the pollish joke of the day, sorry! Unless another comes around.
This is turning into solid entertainment. Do you suppose Republicans could be pulling an 'Operation Chaos' by telling pollsters they like Bloomberg?
Does anyone here truly believe that Bernie or Amy could go toe to toe with China, Iran or Russia? It's a dangerous world out there.
I don't know enough about Bloomberg to posit a guess.
Given the huge ego required to run for president I seriously doubt several candidates are getting together and plotting strategy as a team.
I agree. It's easy to suspect there's a team getting together and plotting strategy against the candidates, however.

The NPR/Marxist Poll would be more honest.
Unless Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden get together and pick one of them to go forward, the answer is going to be Bloomberg.
I do not see Bloomberg doing well on the national stage. However, he is the most sane of the Democrat candidates. Are there enough sane Democrats left to matter?
He will run a boring, heavily managed, media campaign against Trump. It will be similar to Hillary's 2016 campaign, but without her sense of entitlement.
Bernie is their only other option. He will excite the base far more than Bloomberg. Bernie running against Trump would be exciting.
Bloomberg qualifying for the debate is very bad news for Bloomberg, and for the other candidates, who will have to decide whether to attack a guy who is worth $60 billion or so. I may actually watch this debate.
It feels like God himself is arranging this entire political year for my personal enjoyment.

37 year old
white guy
mayor of a failed small town in the midwest
that has NO Military experience
and is a fag
when that was all kept from them, democrats liked him; but now...
Based on my experience on the playground, kids don't plot to go after a weakling or weirdo to pick on, it develops organically because everyone sees the same Target.
How much did Bloomie pay him for that?
I think this will develop into a serious problem for Bloomberg--given the stories about how he spends his money, every single time someone says something nice about him, people will wonder how much they were paid to say it.
Thanks Wendy that made me smile
I am still chewing over Bloomberg's long history of bloomers.
Actually, a person from Mars might think the following:
Bloomberg is Trump without (1) a sense of humor and (2) without Trump's streak of honesty. Can the Demmies put lipstick on this pig? Will the press really go toes up on this rich twerp?
Bloomberg's appeal is that some people think he has enough money to beat Trump. Nobody thought he was a very good mayor back when he was actually mayor. And he has a troubling habit of making condescending statements about anyone who isn't exactly like himself. Add in the fact that he doesn't have much appeal to Blacks and I can't see him winning in November.
Temujin,
"Do you suppose Republicans could be pulling an 'Operation Chaos' by telling pollsters they like Bloomberg?"
They could, but I think it's likelier than non-radical-left Dems are scared of Sanders getting the nomination, and with the perception fading that Biden could beat Trump, they look to Bloomberg: Forceful, rich as hell, hates Trump, decent record as a mayor (if you discount his loathsome authoritarian tendencies, which to them are a plus). Sure, heterodox on the issues but maybe they can spin that as center-appeal, plus sound on the issues they care about most.
Such seems to be the thinking of the liberals I know who are pulling for him, anyway.
I don't see him winning. I don't think his appeal is broad-based enough. His height is a weakness he's not secure enough to shrug off, his manner will be off-putting to many. I think they're fooling themselves if they think they've found their secret anti-Trump weapon. If I were a Democrat, I might just be hoping for Klobuchar's rise, given the alternatives.
Since I'm decidedly not a Democrat, I'm nursing the mean hope that after all this plays out, the "centrists" in the party convince themselves to draft Hillary. Hey, she won more votes than Trump last time! We'll see if they really do think they were cheated, or if they understand that she was a bad candidate and this time, with the fear of the unknown removed, she would lose big.
"She's the best age (59), she's female, and she's got a long record in the Senate."
That's a heck of a set qualifications to be the leader of the free world. How sad that this is all the Democrats have to offer, other than a grumpy ancient socialist.
Browndog said...For the umpteenth time:

If you don't know the answer to that, then clearly you are not qualified to be a Democratic voter. So just give your vote to the local precinct captain. He'll know what to do with it.

I look for Bloomberg to come in third
And be declared the real winner.

Sorry, Buttigieg, you had to go. Too many syllables.
They have to nominate Bernie or lose for certain, IMHO. If it gets stolen from him a second time, a lot of people are going to start to wonder why they are Democrats in the first place.
Warren should drop out, she had her chance as frontrunner and the people said “meh.” Biden will drop out soon enough unless he can get a money boost from his ungrateful family and the other people he made wealthy with graft.
"So just give your vote to the local precinct captain. He'll know what to do with it."
That's not really necessary. They've already voted for you. By the way, most of the Demmie precinct captains in this burg are women.
Mickey Kaus’s tweet was pretty good. “I think Bloomberg is exactly what the party needs today! In other news, I am adding a new wing to my house!"
John Henry thanks for the Ben Kingsley tip I had missed that last year. That looks like a show that the wife and I would enjoy watching. The theme music In Hell I'll be in Good Company by The Dead South is one of my favorite tunes.
John Henry: Every time I see "Marist" in a political context like npr/marist poll I see "Marxist" I immediately realize it's not but that's always my first take.

I always think "Marist Brothers", and imagine a bunch of guys in religious habits sitting around running poll spreadsheets.
A quick look at Wik tells me that is indeed where the name derives - everybody else probably already knows that, but I didn't. Alas for my mental image, Marist College is only "formerly Roman Catholic". (Aren't they all?)
This is all so reminiscent of the 2016 Republican nomination, with the establishment blaming the success of the outsider on "too many candidates" and fantasizing about everyone coalescing behind one establishment candidate after the others drop out.
Here's the thing, it isn't that they have too many candidates, it's that the candidates are bad.
Bloomie's being the nominee would totally end the Media Slander Arm of the Dems Party going after Trump for owning Hotels and resorts as dreaded Emoluments. Bloomie owns a world financial Reporting system getting hired from every foreign Nation, with an extra hundred billion coming in from Red China alone.
people will wonder how much they were paid to say it.
I think that exact thing whenever I see either Clinton speaking somewhere.
"heterodox on the issues but maybe they can spin that as center-appeal, plus sound on the issues they care about most."
I don't think the average Democrat voter is nearly as loony as the commie, the midwestern soccer mom, and little Petey Deep-State are sounding these days, though they (the voters) don't seem to like standing up to their crazy lefty wing much. I'd guess most of them are fine with Bloomberg's positions, and don't mind giving up some liberty to gain respite from the beastly Trump.
What does Bloomberg have to gain my participating in the tonight's debate? The other candidates will have to attack him. I haven't seen him in a national debate, have you? He doesn't have charisma.
Bernie will fight hard. And he's had a bad week. The topless PETA girls that interrupted his rally, and the fight at his rally yesterday or the day before...
I don't think he's going to show up. Maybe I'm wrong, but he can buy advertising and get his message out with out being countered.
Jersey Fled: "Does anyone here truly believe that Bernie or Amy could go toe to toe with China, Iran or Russia? It's a dangerous world out there."
Trade and diplomatic relations that work to the advantage of the American people aren't likely to be on the "issues that are important to me" list of people who think Klobuchar's a good candidate because she's a woman.
Bernie's the only one who's for something.
Granted, he's for something that sucks if you have a lick of sense, but he's for something.
Hope and change.
Bloomberg's opening remarks should be that anyone can be a fucking farmer. It requires no skill or intelligence. That should flush the toilet.
In some ways Trump and Bloomberg are polar opposites.
Trump, for all of his wealth, is seen as a man of the common people.
Bloomberg, with all of his wealth, looks down his nose at the common people.
So long as the candidates try to win the "I Alone Can Defeat Trump" voters they will fail. @Bob Boyd I agree wholeheartedly. The candidate that can be for something - specifically a vision of a better future with them as POTUS - will have a good opportunity to win the election. And I don't see any evidence that the Democrat elite, nor their voters, agree with that approach. With the economy doing well, illegal immigration on the wane, conflicts abroad declining, and other good, positive trends, it will be difficult to overcome Trump. But I think being for something positive is the only way.
What makes a female superior to a man with the same qualifications?
In America today, all other things equal, more people will vote for a woman because she's a woman than will vote for a man because he's a man. "It's historic."

The more candidates the better, if you want a brokered convention. Otherwise it's a specific person vs Bernie instead of the person you like best vs Bernie.
That just shows the depth you have descended to within the Trump Con, Jersey fled. Bloomberg employs tens of thousands of common people while Trump only employees a handful of people who are mostly family and unindicted co-conspirators.
That's right, Bloomberg left out a lot of other skills it takes to be a farmer like price supports subsidies a free pass on pollution free research and development from socialist agricultural colleges.
The Boomers mouthed socialism while getting rich. Their kids thought they meant it. Now the boomers are like, "Oh shit..."
I know it’s shallow, but I just can’t bring myself to vote for someone who is 5’10”.
Trump, for all of his wealth, is seen as a man of the common people.
Trump is seen as a man of the common people because he is very good at fooling the common people. Trump, as a born grifter, sees the common people as marks. That is why he doesn't care when he screws them over.
"she's got a long record in the Senate"
A long record of . . .?
Anyway, looks like Amy is "serious" enough for the next round of Althousian vote rationalization. And a woman!

Trump, as a born grifter, sees the common people as marks. That is why he doesn't care when he screws them over.
Yeah, that low unemployment and 10% income growth for the non-high school grad section is just an illusion

Well, it's your lucky election cycle, because I don't think any of the candidates is 5'10". Who do you have in mind?
You're in luck!
I am 5'10" exactly, and you simply cannot vote for me.
When I first saw the headline there, I thought it said, NPR/Marxist Poll and I notice others thought the same thing.
Bloomberg is horrible. With his positions on guns, farmers, and health care he has no chance in any red states. I can’t find the article now but in the past week someone did an analysis on him economic and tax ideas and they will har a terrible impact on just about everyone except...Bloomberg! He would be unscathed, as would his billion buddies from Davos. He is the candidate of the 1%, running to preserve their privileged positions. If you like open borders, benefits for illegal aliens, exporting more jobs, gun confiscation, and a return to the destruction of rural areas and the working class then Bloomberg is your man.
"Bloomberg is trying to hone a crisp and energetic appeal to voters that will contrast with Biden"
Gotta look "serious" and "competent" to have a chance with Althouse.
Why does Bloomberg need to debate?
I suspect he can go all the way simply by buying his way, without personal appearances at all. Note that he will have access to oceans of funding besides his own wealth.
He could finance every congressional race as well. He and his cabal could purchase the Democratic party outright, if they have not already done so.
There are any number of channels to use for this purpose to get around campaign finance laws. "Grassroots" organizations for one.
Under the circumstances it may be worthwhile to try the experiment. Probably less risky than personal politics.
Election consultants in both parties are drunk on the money walking around. Like pigeons chowing fermented grain.
Weirdly, the opposite was true in 2016. The election pigeons were hungry and sober.
"Here's the thing, it isn't that they have too many candidates, it's that the candidates are bad."
The similarities now to "Trump/too many candidates" in 2016 are signs of a mutual deterioration in the organizational capacity of the parties. However, there seem to me to be differences, too. Trump, for all his bombast was appealing BACK to the center in relation to Republican conservative ideology, whereas Bernie appeals to a radical leftism at odds with the center. And, for all their "moderation" most of the other candidates have pushed left radically this time - e.g. Pete unable to name a single restriction on abortion he feels is justified, all of them embracing radical "transformations" of one sort or another for the economic system. This would seem to give Bloomberg a real opening. But it also has been giving Biden a real opening, which he's squandered due to bumbling, but in my view even worse, in his refusal to stand up firmly for the more centrist positions of the Clinton and Obama eras. It began with his fumbling inability to slap Kamala down for her idiotic school bussing race bating ploy. He should be defending STRONGLY against the usual p.c. intersectional eat-your-own gambits. But he flinched. Bloomberg seems set to flinch too. So it comes down to who the heck knows?
Read this morning that Bloomberg has hired lawyers in many states to litigate climate change issues. Nice.
"...she's got a long record in the Senate"
That's a recommendation? Senators do nothing, and take credit for it. They are, generally speaking, a bunch of useless seat-warmers. Yes, Amy fits right in with that group. Let's give her a promotion.
By and large, Senators make poor commanders in chief. They are the team players, the gamers.
Another half-truth from Howard, aka "The Master of Half Truths".
The Trump Organization is a holding company. Through it Trump is sole or majority owner of dozens of subsidiary companies employing an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 employees. This is a common way that real estate development companies organize.
BTW the press has no problem calling employees of these subsidiaries "Trump employees" if one of them turns out to be an illegal.
I don't see Trump as the man of the common people. However, unlike Bloomberg (or Zuckerberg or Soros, for that matter) Trump has lived the kind of life a lot of common people imagine they'd live if they were billionaires. He has the gold-festooned apartment, an exotic supermodel wife, golf resorts, celebrity gigs, etc. He indulges his whims and really doesn't seem to care what other people think about it. He has fun. Bloomberg and some of these other billionaires seem to want to take over the world. They're cold and serious. They're the kind of men people worry they'd become if they were billionaires.
Bloomberg employs tens of thousands of common people while Trump only employees a handful of people who are mostly family and unindicted co-conspirators.
Howard,
It is never a good thing to imitate Lil' Chuck.

What about 5’4” because I think that’s what Mayor Bloomie is. If he’s 5’8” in stocking feet I will eat my hat.
Danno,
I used to read Drudge multiple times daily for 20+ years.
Since Matt left, Now I take a quick look every couple days to learn things like this. That Bernie's always big rally numbers are getting to the point they can't be ignored.
How many people here have seen any stories at all about his huge rally numbers? Either in 16 or this cycle.

My mom’s in a nursing home, and one thing I have learned is that it’s an effort for the elderly to stay "with it” all of the time.
If they go after Bernie instead of Bloomberg, we’ll know for sure who they work for.
Bernie should ignore the other candidates and go after Bloomberg. If Bernie doesn’t, then we’ll know who he works for.
Bernie should call Bloomberg a Racist, Misogynistic Plutocrat
I like the Howard and Freder Frederson tactic of calling Trump voters, who like his policies and the attendant outcomes, as rubes who fell for a con. So much nicer than Deplorables.

Democrat kaka about Republicans being the “party of the rich” notwithstanding, their elite will gladly welcome Bloomberg’s purchase of the nomination and the Presidency.
The questions will be: How many independents have Dems already lost with their TDS and socialist insanity? Will Bernie Bros., Antifa and other extremist idiots riot and/or stay home? Will the President’s minions roll out Bloomberg’s Mary Poppins video at every opportunity?
https://www.redstate.com/nick-arama/2020/02/16/this-may-be-the-most-cringeworthy-video-of-mike-bloomberg-yet/
Bloomberg doesnt need to flinch. Probably.
All he needs to say is "I am here". And buy, buy, buy.
Including rounding up all alternate funding sources. If he looks like he will be successful it would be risky for others in his position to bet against him. He can hurt them if he wins, and he is likely to do so. Nobody will hurt them if he loses. So it looks good in game theory, backing him reduces their risk, with no downside.
If he wants to spend enough and make enough private promises and threats he can probably corner the political finance market. He stands to lose a very great deal personally, but at 78 - you can't take it with you, nor play the game much longer. That sort of wealth is its own plane of existence. His children are going to be extremely wealthy in any case (doubtless their inheritance is predetermined, lavish, and firewalled), and I have not heard that they want to play the game in that arcane dimension that requires $60 Billion. So why not, becoming President of the USA is a sort of ultimate prize and a permanent indelible inscription in history.
If 90% of the political system, all the infrastructure of institutions and service providers are for sale, such as the MSM and other communication channels, and they are, then all he needs to do is buy.
"It's a bold strategy, Cotton.”
Trump has “bought off” the working class. This is the main commie critique of capitalism, “good jobs are the opiate of the masses.”
Trump is not a "man of the common people." But he doesn't hate The Common People, the way most Democrats do. Hillary lost, in part, because she absolutely hates, loathes, detests working- and middle-class people. The Deplorables returned the favor.
You would think that they would try to update their talking points to address the conditions in the real world, but no. ARM is still on about searching for ways to "make our economy competitive” It’s based on his deep distaste, which he shares with much of the Democrat Party, for working people and their values.
Bloomberg secretly is on a mission for Biden and I can prove it:
1) Dig a hole (Biden’s done that)
2) Drop a seed in it (Bloomberg is the seed)
3) Cover it with dirt (Stories about Bloomberg’s racism/sexism/anti farmerism)
4) Water it (Let the media go wild)
5) Corn pops up (Corn Pop).
It all makes sense if you really know how to look at it.
They need Tulsi Gabbard if they want to see Bloomberg eviscerated on stage. But she won’t be there.
I can sort of "get" Bloomberg. He has played the game of amassing wealth extremely well. It is like playing a strategy game, like Civilization. I used to like Rome Total War.
What happens when you have reached the limits if the game, conquered the map?
You go look for another game. They are addictive.
’It's a process. You dig a hole, you put a seed in, you put dirt on top, add water, up comes the corn.’
I sent that quote to a buddy who’s a cotton scout and he was not amused. Simpletons are not, nor have ever been, successful farmers.
If 90% of the political system, all the infrastructure of institutions and service providers are for sale, such as the MSM and other communication channels, and they are, then all he needs to do is buy.
It takes a lot of effort to be sufficiently cynical.
’Trump only employees a handful of people’
The Trump Organization has ~20k employees, just like Bloomberg L.P.
Freder: “Trump is seen as a man of the common people because he is very good at fooling the common people.”
Another elitist Democrat feeding the pretext that opponents are “common” in the derogatory sense, ignorant and easily duped while boasting a Dem base of the lowest low information voters and a history of candidates who, until now, have habitually hedged their actual platforms to dupe those same rubes.
In the latter vein, it may be interesting to see how the Green New Deal and socialism will play in the general election. Of course, in the likely event that Bloomberg buys the nomination, he will follow the time-honored Dem tradition of lying to the voters. He’s already started.
"Bernie will fight hard."
I actually don't think so. He's never fought hard. He's never been seriously contested in any race in Vermont, and when he went national in 2016, he refused to go for the jugular against Clinton. He has a natural base of support that won't ever desert him, but he lacks the killer instinct to grow from there.
probably true, but it's a Kinsley gaffe

The movie I recommend to Althouse is Florence Foster Jenkins.
It's not that Trump is seen as a man of the common people. He's what the common man imagines a billionaire to be like. "Hell yeah, I'd have a gold toilet and a supermodel wife!" Trump has fun with his money.
This post makes it sound like 4 candidates other than Bernie Sanders and Bloomberg are in a hopeless muddle with no feasible way for any of them to stand out.
But Warren shouldn't even be in a discussion of anti-Sanders candidates. Warren and Sanders are in the same lane, competing for the same kinds of voters. In that race within the race, Sanders is decisively winning and Warren seems to be going nowhere.
Biden should drop out because of his devastating losses so far. His current polls aren't a good measure, since he's been severely underperforming relative to polls. The possibility that he might still win some states in the future doesn't justify staying in.
Pete Buttigieg has won more delegates than any other Democratic candidate. Pete Buttigieg apparently won the most delegates in Iowa, and he certainly did far better than anyone other than Sanders. Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders tied in New Hampshire with the same number of delegates.
(The nominee is typically chosen based on delegates, not the "popular vote" or anything else.)
From 2000 to 2016, every Democrat who won the Iowa caucuses went on to win the nomination. And the only time anyone has ever won the Democratic nomination without being in the top 3 in Iowa was the exception that proves the general rule: Sen. Tom Harkin overwhelmingly winning his own state in 1992.
New Hampshire has been a less reliable barometer: the last two Democratic nominees lost New Hampshire.
If you don't want Bernie Sanders to win, the clear alternative for the Democrats to unite around is Pete Buttigieg.

"If the Democrats force me into this corner, I will cast my vote for Sanders, because I will take a fool and his dreamy notions about the Soviet Union over Donald Trump and the mafia state he and people like Attorney General William Barr are busy creating in America."
Ah, yes, let's have communism over the "mafia state." Wait-- what?
"Tom Nichols is a professor at the Naval War College"
So -- wait, again: in Trump's mafia state someone who thinks he's creating a mafia state teaches at the Naval War College and plans to vote for Bernie?
Some caudillo we've got there in the White House.
And by the way, Tom, how come this mafia boss couldn't prevent a 3-year hoax investigation?
Trump is seen as a man of the common people because he is very good at fooling the common people.
No Dem will win this year's Presidential election because they are collectively no longer good at fooling the common people, thanks to Trump.
“But Warren shouldn't even be in a discussion of anti-Sanders candidates. Warren and Sanders are in the same lane, competing for the same kinds of voters. In that race within the race, Sanders is decisively winning and Warren seems to be going nowhere.”

Very true!

It's crucial for the Democrats to choose the correct nominee to lose the general election.
I think it a mistake to take the debate stage, but perhaps the moderators can be bought cheaply.
As for the other four colluding to pick one- not one fucking chance of that happening. It would be the equivalent of four hyenas choosing which one gets to eat the water buffalo.
I see Inga has picked her new favorite candidate, just in time to see him implode, too.
"Trump has fun with his money."
Yes he does. Bloomberg will spend his money making sure nobody has any fun.
It amazes me that a multi-billionare can run for office on a platform of wrecking the economy and destroying working-class jobs, while enjoying great support from the Party of the People.

There's not much Bloomberg money can't buy.
Tucker Carlson did an eye-opening segment last night on what it can and will do, and what it means going forward.
A must watch if you ask me.
'Bawdy' is "outdated language"? Nonsense of course but I expect someone somewhere is shaking his head in agreement.
It isn't going to be Buttuvwxyz. That we have to have this discussion is hilarious. Buttuvwxyz is going to finish 3rd or worse in every Super Tuesday state, and 3rd or worse in each of the following Tuesdays. Klobuchar has a better chance than Buttuvwxyz, and she has close to zero chance at this point. The nominee is going to be Sanders, Bloomberg, or Biden- or is going to be installed in Milwaukee from outside the field.
What does the Democratic leadership want? I think you might be able to discern it from how the moderators treat Bloomberg tomorrow night. If they give him nothing but beachball sized questions to swat at, then you will have your answer.
Browndog,
I watched it a little while ago when someone else linked it on another site.
"Bloomberg is trying to hone a crisp and energetic appeal to voters that will contrast with Biden"
Ok, Bloomer.
But I disagree- I don't think Bloomberg can buy the nomination. Indeed, I think 20% might well be the limit to what $10 billion dollars spent on nomination cycle can garner. The only caveat I would offer to that belief is this- the DNC might not care what the primary voters do, and pick Bloomberg with his 20% of the vote after South Carolina.
I have seen the beginnings or entirities of about 1000 Bloomberg ads in the last two months (I usually skip ads when given the choice), and I think I am a relatively normal person in this regard- after the first 10 or so, all future television/on-line popup ads drive me to actively hate your product.
I wrote yesterday- if after Super Tuesday it really is Sanders vs Bloomberg the rest of the way, then Sanders will have his very best shot at the nomination (the same also applies to Bloomberg for obvious reasons). The contrast in that case is greatly to Sanders benefit- something he wouldn't get with one of the other "moderate" candidates.
Biden should drop out because of his devastating losses so far. His current polls aren't a good measure, since he's been severely underperforming relative to polls. The possibility that he might still win some states in the future doesn't justify staying in.
@Jonathan Cohen, in three campaigns for the presidential nomination Joseph Biden has yet to finish in the top three in any caucus or primary. Ever. Of course he’ll stay in as long as there’s a chance to finally win something. The old war horse is answering a trumpet only he can hear, for one last chance at glory.
I think I am a relatively normal person in this regard- after the first 10 or so, all future television/on-line popup ads drive me to actively hate your product.
I agree, but I'm seeing one problem-
The Bloomberg ads are easy to watch. They're not the fire breathing attack ads we normally see. Bloomberg has done his homework.
You want to know how many Trump Campaign ads I saw on Youtube or television in all of 2015-2016? Three, and two of those instances were the long ad his campaign produced late in the general election. I lived here in Oak Ridge at the time- East Tennessee voted for Trump 2 to 1, and yet Shelob spent funds to advertise here on local television enough that I saw her ads at least a 100 times that late Summer and Fall.
If Democrats were sensible, they'd vote for Trump, since the country has done well under his stewardship (and would have done even better absent Democrat/Deep State subterfuge and sabotage). However, their party has self-selected against being sensible and will go with the candidate that appeals most deeply to their feelings of outrage.
The nominee is going to be Sanders, Bloomberg, or Biden- or is going to be installed in Milwaukee from outside the field.
Only a death wish among Democrats would cause them to nominate Biden. His cognitive dysfunction becomes more obvious every passing day.
Its going to be Sanders or Bloomberg. Right now, my money is on the commie.
Browndog,
Lots of ads are "easy" to watch, but no one likes to watch good ads over and over- they are time wasters even the first time you see it. You don't need to see an ad 10 times an afternoon, which is the rate I am seeing Bloomberg ads. If Trump ran ads at this rate, I would resent it, and if he ran them in a primary, I might well vote for anyone else as revenge for wasting my time like that.
Now, if Bloomberg wants to produce his ads with Victoria's Secret models as visual aids, I might change my tune.
Bloomberg can just buy out the remaining candidates.
He can offer to just pay them to drop out, enough to make them wealthy beyond whatever they, probably, ever reasonably expected. I don't think this personal gift would count as campaign spending.
For the umpteenth time: what makes a female superior to a man with the same qualifications?
The obvious answer is that she is more possessed of "the feeling of being kind and inclusive" than he is.
Am looking forward to watching the video clip of Mr Biden and Mr Bloomberg arguing, red-faced and shouting, about the relative merits of legal versus illegal income streams.
Biden is only finished if he loses in South Carolina. I need that data point to finally decide he isn't viable. If he wins in South Carolina, then he is the race until at least the end of April.
Bloomberg can buy the black vote by paying off the black churches.
To advocate for Bloomberg, however sincerely, is to be suspected of having been bought.
If Democrats were sensible, they'd vote for Trump
'Democrats' and 'sensible' don't belong in the same sentence.
"So he (Trump) was freed to be as brutal as he needed to be to kill off his opponents."
This is the mistake all the "moderates" have made to date- they aren't ruthless against each other. Gabbard was the only candidate that had that killer instinct- she is the one that kill Harris' campaign, in my opinion. You have to stand out in large field, and the best way to do that is to go for the jugular when the opportunity presents itself. Klobuchar, for example, should have gutted Biden during the debates prior to Iowa and New Hampshire- he was a fat juicy target, and yet she did nothing but issue a series of "me-too" talking points. If she had been wearing Biden's withered carcass like a suit during those debates, she might well have won either Iowa and/or New Hampshire.

BTW what happened to Mayor Pete?
VP
Mayor Pete cannot win the general because African Americans will not support him. The first gay president will be a Republican, and I'd nominate Ric Grenell.
My daughter asserted yesterday that Hillary's pride would prevent her running as a VP candidate but I argued that her ambition far outweighs her pride.
Why do we need a 'gay President'. For that matter, why do we need a woman President? The office should go to the best candidate. If the best candidate is a woman or gay then let her/him be elected but for the sake of checking off Affirmative Action goals, then, please, no!

John Henry, why do you read Drudge?<<
No one reads Drudge; Drudge is gone. Even when Drudge wasn't gone, no one read Drudge, because Drudge never wrote anything. He merely aggregated news and his news aggregator site is an excellent one. It is well-balanced and has many links to stories and news sources of both sides. That's probably why.
If you don't want Bernie Sanders to win, the clear alternative for the Democrats to unite around is Pete Buttigieg.
We have to wait for South Carolina.
If Buttigieg is as unpopular with black voters as the polls (and experience) would indicate, then he will become a danger to the DNCe. It's alleged that Democrats can't win without a strong Black vote. No one really wants to test that theory,
This is what Limbaugh pointed out last week and was trashed as a homophobe for.
"The Bloomberg ads are easy to watch. "
When Bloomie's ads first rolled out here last month, I tried to watch one and got as far as the first 10 seconds when I learned that Trump is LITERALLY responsible for tornadoes in the Heartland!!11!! I haven't watched one since, and to Yancey's point, I don't think many other minds will be changed either as the bombardment continues.
Something I haven't seen any discussion of is that both Sanders and Bloomberg are Jewish. How does that play with the Black vote? Probably not an issue in the Northeast, but elsewhere?
Narciso linked to another story of Bloomberg insulting people of color. How can I be the only one here to see that Bloomer is leaking these stories in order to attract the liberaly perceived racist deplorables away from Trump?
"I don't see Trump as the man of the common people. "
People who say this are the same people who shout that Trump is a loser with multiple bankruptcies. Perhaps each bankruptcy kept Trump awake at night worrying if he was going to come out all right or end up broke.
Might give him something in common with the common poorly educated man or woman.
Yipes, folks. I haven't seen a Bloomberg ad yet. What am I doing right?
I haven't turned on the television. I stream movies and shows on Netflix and Prime.
I only stream radio, usually classical music stations from around the US and England. I used to watch Fox News, but I stopped after Kavanaugh. It was too upsetting.
I read the Wall Street Journal columnists and editorial page, and I glance at the Financial Times. I read The Spectator, both US and UK editions. Also, the New Criterion, the Claremont Review, Commentary, and Standpoint.
I read the following blogs with varying degrees of pleasure and displeasure:
Althouse
Instapundit
Powerline
NewNeo
Small dead animals
American Greatness
Conservative Treehouse
Zerohedge (predicted 30 of the last two recessions)
PJ Media
I suppose there are Bloomberg ads along the edges, but I never look at online ads.
There can be no doubt about my bias, but I stay reasonably well-informed, not least because of our stable of hair-on-fire commenters, Howard, ARM, the indefatigable Inga, Freder Frederson, and, yes, Chuck. Name one. Let's get to the bottom of this atrocity.
I only see Bloomberg ads when there is some media on in a public place. Barbershop, bar, whatever. I pay for all of my media to avoid ads, so I am probably not his target audience anyway.
I think that Bloomberg might be “on the spectrum” so we should all just shut up about the nasty stuff he says. I think Lazlo’s blog “I’m on the Spectrum Bitch!” explains the way it works.
Here’s the link. Kind of sounds like Bloomberg
https://iwantedcheeseonthat.blogspot.com
Network tv carries the largest audience by far, and that's where you run into Bloom ads.
I only watch the news in the morning and evening, Jeopardy, and sporting events like golf and the Daytona race. That little exposure forced me to view dozens of Bloom ads, and that's the only place I've ever seen them.
Given the current stable of great business tycoons, being on the spectrum is what Nitschke meant by Ubermensch
... How much did Bloomie pay him for that? ..
I must protest. It’s Bloomy!

She's the best age (59), she's female, and she's got a long record in the Senate.
She's got a long record of accomplishing nothing in the US Senate
Who does taht endear her to?
Oh, and Elizabeth "I want to take away everyone's private insurance and force them to go on Medicare" Warren may be "not Sanders", but she most certainly IS "not a moderate"
If I picture those 4 huddling and really trying to decide which of the 4 of them should take up the banner of moderate anti-Trumpism, I see the choice as Amy Klobuchar. She's the best age (59), she's female, and she's got a long record in the Senate. But that's too sensible, isn't it?

This sums up nicely why I never vote in primaries. The sensible candidate I would have voted for has usually dropped out by then.

It's hard to blame Wolfson- Hillary didn't need help losing.
The 2008 Hillary team decided it would all be over after "Super Tuesday"
The 2008 Obama team planned to keep on campaigning
Obama won the Democrat nod in 2008 because of the delegates his team picked up at small State caucuses right after Super Tuesday. Caucuses where the Clinton team just didn't show up and do the necessary prep work
So no, it's very easy to blame Wolfson, and anyone else on the Clinton 2008 team. They lost Hillary's real chance to win, because they just weren't prepared

Not saying Hillary would have won the GE in 2008
i'm saying that the ONLY reason why Hillary trailed Obama in the delegate totals (which is why Obama won the 2008 Primary) is because of those post-Super Tuesday Caucuses.
If the Clinton team had been on the ball in 2008, she could have gone to the Convention effectively tied. At which point "her Super Delegates" could and would have put her over the top.
Whether she would have won the General election is irrelevant. Her team muffed the Primary

Yep, that would explain why Income is up for the rich, not the poor, in America. Oh wait, that's the Obama economy
So, that would explain why everyone's doing better, but the upper income brackets are doing "more" better. Oh, wait, no, in the Trump economy the jobs in the lower income brackets are showing the bigger raises.
