Well, this Slate accumulation of all the ads is a helpful place to start. I have no idea if these things are ranked correctly — whatever that means — other than that I'm sure they're not. One viewer can only give his opinion and these ads are intended for micro-targeting voters. That's what makes it interesting to get in there and find things that you know weren't made for you but for somebody else. Or to find things that appeal to you, like, for me "Big Gay Ice Cream":
I love ice cream. It's my #1 favorite food. And I'm as gay friendly as a nongay person can be. And I have an aversion to politics, so this ad is great. It does nothing but show the candidate eating ice cream, saying "mmmm," and calling it "Big Gay Ice Cream." I'm going to assume that's a brand name and not just a way to say excellent ice cream.
I notice the title of the ad is "Mike Love Big Gay Ice Cream." Is that bad grammar, intentional caveman/baby talk, or a Beach Boys reference? Mike pays so much that I can't imagine a plain vanilla mistake.
Okay, let's see what the Slate writer has to say. He ranks this ad as #10 (out of 185):
In its lonely quest to make the internet believe that Rich Mike, who wears expensive purple sweaters and spends lots of time in Bermuda, is Weird Self-Aware Mike, Bloomberg’s team has released several low-budget, shot-in-a-minute spots in which the candidate stands in a campaign office and woodenly endorses various foodstuffs and/or holidays. This message, in which Bloomberg calls out for ice cream from Big Gay Ice Cream—an ice cream store in New York—is my favorite of these, in part because never before has someone seemed so wooden and odd while touting the virtues of ice cream. Bloomberg comes across like Mr. Burns in that one Simpsons episode where he had his first taste of “iced cream.” Oh, Weird Mike, you awkward, lovable, billionaire scamp!By the way, the real Mike Love is almost a vegan, but he says, "I will succumb to an ice-cream shake." He likes "A Cold Stone Creamery coffee shake. I have a hard time passing that up."
What's my point here? It's: Who the hell knows what is going on with all these ads sloshing around in the mind of the American voter?

What is really weird are all the ads about how Obama and Bloomberg were best buddies and worked like a team to bring about all the blessings of the Obama administration.
I thought Joe Biden was Obama's vice-president?
I am so sick of Bloomberg's constant, inescapable ads, I've grown to truly hate the sight of him. That goes for everyone in my family, too. Even my 87 yr old mother, who can't stand Trump, now finds him preferable to Bloomberg thanks to this constant bombardment. Expecting him to pop up out of our Rice Krispies next!
I've noticed the wooden acting. I think this was an issue for Hillary. It certainly suggests a lack of charisma, but it is easy to portray as fake. Being quirky can endear you with a few, but not with the many, and besides, Bernie has the quirky vote. These ads are to give Bloomberg a brand that Trump already has. He would have done better hosting a season of the Apprentice to gain that brand.
A Cold Stone Creamery coffee shake
Ugh. Cold Stone has the worst Ice Cream. The mouth feel is all wrong -- totally fake and plastic.
That said, a good Coffee Shake is the bomb. Right up there with Pumpkin Shakes from Culvers.
Okay, Bloomberg isn't quirky, he's bizarre.
" Cold Stone has the worst Ice Cream. The mouth feel is all wrong -- totally fake and plastic."
It's disgusting to watch them slap it on that slab (I know it's cold but it could still be germy) and slather it around.
GROSS. I hate it.
What in the hell is with psychopaths and veganism? Seriously?
Throughout history you see this. Gordon Gecko's line in Wall Street is a reminder, "That's the thing about WASPS they love animals they can't stand people." Bloomberg is quite literally 'the dark triad' in the flesh and he "occasionally succumbs" to eating ice cream...that's like the devil saying he occasionally helps vulnerable little children get to heaven, from time to time.
Jimmy John's is also terrible. The "bun" is garbage and they put barely any meat on them.
From Forbes --
The New York City Board of Health rubber stamped Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s much maligned sugary drink regulation, banning the sale of beverages larger than 16-ounces in restaurants, movie theaters, and food carts.
How long until Bloomburger decides that ice cream is no good for America?
I’ve often speculated that in the minds of many people who support the Donald, the best thing he has going for him is the R next to his name. With Bloomburg and some of the other Dem candidates, you can say the same thing about the D next to their name.
He'a a control freak, and he needs to be stopped now.
Went to You Tube looking for something and, Bang! I am given a Bloomberg ad to watch. He’s everywhere.
I've never seen a Bloomberg ad, a combination of no TV and uBlock Origin ad blocker I guess. He doesn't advertise on Rush, my radio culture contact.
Bloomberg seems an improbable candidate to thread all those Identity needles. But maybe with a slavish media and a mountain of cash Mike can get it do...Oh, shit!
Bloomberg ads are displacing some (but not all) Steyer ads, so there's that.
uBlock Origin blocks ads on youtube, anyway I've never seen one. The penalty is that the picture stops at 23:40 after you last interact with the site, which means you have to click on the progress position you want it to continue at (easy to do but you've got to be there). Then you get another 23:40.
I think the sound eventually stops too but I always update the picture. You can update anytime, if you want to reset the countdown clock to the full 23:40 again.
Shorter title: I'm much more informed than you so just go along with what I'm about to tell you.
I refer to Cold Stone Creamery ice cream as sweetened lard. It's just so slithery. Yuck.
So after approximately 185 ads we finally love Big Brother?
Ficta:. Exactly I don't know if it's the quality of the fat or if they just use too much fat. Even worse was this small high-end ice cream shop in Santa Barbara called McConnell's the ice cream had a strong texture of Wax. You got to be pretty Stoned to enjoy that
Bloomberg has a movie career in playing Pete Postlethwaite, if he wants it.
So is there an advertising tipping point in politics? A point at which the ubiquity of their ads triggers popular revulsion and the candidate becomes a laughingstock? I’m guessing the marketing people would say no and that there’s no such thing as too much propaganda. Bloomberg apparently intends to find out. It isn’t difficult to see how Trump could turn this against him just by repeatedly calling attention to it.
And I'm as gay friendly as a nongay person can be.
Yes, I've noticed.
Why?
I find the hijacking of the word "gay" annoying. Gaydom is anything but gay. It is, in fact, incredibly grim.
One of the most significant events of my life was living in the middle of the AIDS epidemic in NYC and SF. You were there in NYC too. What was gay about that? Tens of thousands of young men shitting themselves to death?
You frequently imply, prof, that not sharing your gay worship is some sort of moral prudery. I started out, fresh out of college with your point of view, and changed my mind as a result of observing so many guys shitting themselves to death. You didn't notice?
It's still early days. Let's see if Blow-Me can elevate himself and become king of the munchkins in the Democrat debate
Bloomberg has said many of the racist, misogynist, homophobic things Democrats accuse Trump of. Democrats claim Trump will refuse to leave office when his term is up, Bloomberg had the NYC term limit law changed so he could serve a third term. Now we have Bloomberg trying to behave like the big mac loving, two ice cream serving eating Trump.
The Beach Boys went through a health-food phase in the late 60s/early 70s with Brian even running (though not profitably) a health food store: The Radiant Radish. Over the years, Brian fell out of the lifestyle while Mike has maintained it.
During that period, they did a number of "Mama Says", "Take Good Care Of Your Feet" & H.E.L.P. Is On The Way, possibly the only song by a major rock group to extoll the virtues of enemas..
Um "a number of health themed songs like"
Justin Peters is a moron.
Here is the subhead:
"And I figured out what this weird, expensive, suddenly ubiquitous campaign is trying to do:"
...and this is what the brainiac Justin Peters concludes:
"The point is that the campaign’s goal is to very quickly achieve messaging saturation in lieu of the monthslong ground game Bloomberg didn’t bother to run."
In other news, people sometimes wear shoes.
The easiest way to avoid all of the political ads is to not watch television. The bonus of that is you don't see any so-called "news" programs, either.
Calories in a 20oz soda: 240. Calories in a pint of Big Gay Blueberry Gobbler (which looks like what Mike is having -- and hey, is that a shot at Buttigieg?): 810 (plus 39 grams of fat).
Which one does Mike want banned? The one poor people can afford. Classic elitist play.
I’ve been to Big Gay Ice Cream in the Village, and it’s certainly decorated in a big gay way, but the ice cream was so so.
Mike could teach anyone to run for President.
You just buy a slot, throw in in some video, and up come the poll numbers.
It doesn't take much gray matter.
Big Gray Brain Matter is the best.
Maybe it’s gotten better.
I'm going to encourage everyone to get rid of their TV. Your life will be so much better

Jon. Maybe she feels responsible. Next question?
Ads are what the 'mute' button is for.
Hearing ads that were running on black radio in the barbershop, I got the impression that his message to blacks was “I won’t fuck up this jobs thing that’s going on.”
I don’t believe he can say that and have his views on global warming. He’s lying to somebody.
Not to mention I don’t know how he is going to turn back on the flow of cheap labor from the south and protect the gains that blacks have made at the same time.
People who can afford big gay ice cream also have the discipline to keep their weight down. The people who buy the big gulps are also triggered by the sugar water to eat more and more and more of the greasy fries and the disgusting fat burgers which contributes to the epidemic of obesity.
Who counted them?
Maybe we should ask The "My Pillow" guy about 24/7 ads on TV.
And I have an aversion to politics,
Ya coulda fooled me. Based on this blog, you're far more interested in politics, the machinations and bullshittery of it (=the actual "politics", although not the substance of policies), than anyone I've ever known.
That's a good one Doctor Mike. Maybe he should change the name of his company to big gay pillow. I just love effeminate male whack-job hucksters who wear the cross of Jesus proudly over there cardigan sweater
Ice cream contains the following: milk, cream, sugar, flavor, e.g., vanilla is milk, cream, sugar, vanilla. Some include eggs-that is French style Haagen-Dazs, vs. the Philadelphia style ice creams by Breyers, alas, and Turkey Hill, which don't.
I say "alas" because in the early 2000s, Breyers, which had been bought by the [ethnic epithet for Dutchmen] at Unilever, decided to gum up the works. They changed the recipe!
Breyers natural vanilla ice cream: milk, cream, sugar, tara gum, natural flavor.
In place of vanilla, or vanilla bean, whichever it was, it is now "natural flavor." Cockroach is a natural flavor, but I'm agin it.
But that isn't the worst part. That tara gum gives it some horrible consistency-first time I tried it I changed spoons a couple of times, thinking they had soap on them. Tara gum, guar gum, xanthan gum, carageenan-all the work of the devil.
"I just love effeminate male whack-job hucksters who wear the cross of Jesus proudly over there cardigan sweater”
So you’re supporting Mayor Pete?
For someone who claims to have an aversion to politics, you sure do write about politics a lot.
Tillamook makes damn good ice cream.
No, Auntie, the difference with Pete is he is out and proud. I guess he's out in proud if you swallow the CIA cover story that he's gay.

That's why he's eating it straight out of the carton, because he's a role model for portion control? That's your answer?

Amazing how you can know so much about people who you otherwise don't identify with. It's as if you were an anthropologist (minus the respect for your subjects) in addition to being a Marine, a resource exploiter, a green technologist, and whatever else you're saying you do today. LCPL Diane Fossey to the white courtesy phone!
MB's left-handed. So am I, but it looks weird to seem him eat with his left.
Nichevo: nobody is buying your homophobic cover story. it's really important that you come out to yourself before you come out to your parents. Of course they have known since you were a child they just waiting for the day that you can accept who you really are and find happiness.
My daughter is a lefty and every time I see her chopping vegetables with a knife it scares the shit out of me
Howie, let's test your hypothesis. Why don't you suck my cock, and then tell everybody whether it tastes like shit.
He is “out and proud” but he’s also often seen thumping his Bible. As Lazlo says, it’s a good think God agrees with him so much.
Bloomberg is garnering so much attention and fast-rising poll numbers because he’s saying, “I am in this to beat Trump. I have the will and the resources to do it.” And everyone but the most devoted Trump cultists understands that. And most understand that it scares the shit out of Trump. To the extent that a feral, demented, narcissistic sociopath has any special understanding of “fear” apart from his moment to moment existence.
Tcrosse observes: Tillamook makes damn good ice cream.
The best. Especially the Vanilla Bean and the Mountain Huckleberry.

Indeed. Althouse is the Florence Foster Jenkins of self awareness. Cruel neutrality is her high C ...
Fernandistein notes: Ya coulda fooled me. Based on this blog, you're far more interested in politics, the machinations and bullshittery of it (=the actual "politics", although not the substance of policies), than anyone I've ever known.
Politics as entertainment. Just like the 'news' media. It's not about the policies, it's all about the contest. Like watching American Idol, I suppose.
Chuck, it's ok to fap, whatever your teachers, parents, clerics told you when they caught you as a child, but as they told you, doing it in public is a problem. Hope you have tissues handy.
Hope you've used them by the time you read this: Bloomberg will lose. It will not be Trump vs. Bloomberg. If he does get the nom, it will be a three way race and MB will not take the prize. If you want to defeat the OMB, it's going to be with the actual literal commie, Sanders. That should be too much for a LLR, but I'm sure you're fine with it.
Once upon a time we barefoot East Tennessee hillbillies were gifted with a Stone Cold Creamery...too expensive, the process of working the icecream on a slab too precious, more yuppie-Boomer entertainment than nourishment. Our local Kroger can provide plenty of creative flavor variations with their Private Label brand, priced as to encourage multiple choices for your domestic edification.
Trying to deconstruct ads that aren't micro-targeted to me personally seems a bit of a slog. Especially since I find the subject of the ads (Bloomberg) to be about as charismatic as a 4x8 sheet of plywood under the best ofcircumstances, and a creepy marionette in the worst.
That said, I do wonder a few things about the micro-targeted. The foremost being: Are they themselves aware that they're being pandered to in such a cynical way? I suspect that at least some of the targets are fairly savy.
It's a great mystery to me why a political candidate can be gay but it can't be an atheist.
Nonapod: The foremost being: Are they themselves aware that they're being pandered to in such a cynical way?
And yet you people lap up the cynical pandering from Donald J Trump.
"Based on this blog, you're far more interested in politics, the machinations and bullshittery of it..."
What if I had devoted myself to cancer research? What would you say about how I felt about cancer?
If we chose presidents by lot we'd end up with fewer weirdos. Probably.
You backed into that one Ann. of course you would be interested in cancer if you devoted your blog to cancer research it doesn't mean you love cancer or like cancer but you find it interesting.
A little off topic but I can't imagine a way that Bloomberg performs poorly in the debate tonight. He is a highly accomplished public figure, who also managed to build a very large business, overseeing a great many people. Standing up and expressing himself is nothing new.
The only risk I see for him is if he focuses on policy minutiae and issues. What is his vision for a better future with him as POTUS?
Speaking of cancer I listen to a very interesting podcast with doctor valter longo of USC. Apparently periodic long fasting of 5 days helps prevent mitigate and actually kill cancer in human beans.
Apparently it's the metabolic changes associated with ketosis. interestingly enough a keto diet does not provide the same benefits.
@Chuck: Trump isn't afraid of anything, especially not losing the 2020 election. With this comment you provide additional evidence that you, like all the other Leftists I know, have no idea what motivates Trump, why his supporters like him, and how he won in 2016 (and is likely to do in 2020).
The transgender spectrum is piecewise trendy (i.e. trans/homo). That said, Bloomberg is sincerely, bitterly, unabashedly Pro-Choice, selective, opportunistic, as Obama before him.
Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?
My husband became hooked on Talenti Gelato for a few months. He loves that stuff. I don’t like Cold Stone because the butterfat content is too high, makes it feel like you’re eating a stick of butter.
Last Thursday I made homemade mocha ice cream that mh really liked. Cream, milk, sugar, salt, and 5 egg yolks. A simple custard base that you can take in any direction.
Here is what is sloshing around in my mind:
Mike Bloomberg is a soulless would-be, wannabe manipulator the public opinion. My sales resistance is up, and he won't get a fair hearing from me.
I would vote for him for dogcatcher if I wanted to kill dogs, but that's about it.
But what's going on with the people who do let ads wash over them? I can't imagine. Are they influenced?
Well of course they are. That's the only reason he has placed in any poll. This makes perfect sense if understand he has virtually unlimited resources. He can micro-target with each of the 185 ads. Assume the target of each is 1% of registered democrats. That is almost 2 ads targeted directly at any voter.
Those without the resources to create 20+ ads, must make a much broader appeal. This results in a lower conversion rate, but a better overall return.
No one outside of the Northeast knows Bloomberg very well. Most of country now knows only what the ads tell them. It will take some time for people to discover they don't want him. By that time he will have amassed a bunch of delegates on super Tuesday.
Howard, I'm certain you'd agree that all politicians pander a bit to different voting groups. The fact that Bloomberg or Trump or whoever panders isn't special, it's how its done and how effective that pandering is. In this case, Bloomberg is most likely attempting to appeal to a very select groups of people. My guess is that he's attempting to appeal to different groups of younger people who are deeply immersed the modern social media driven culture of memes and meta discussions. In my opinion, these are the sorts of people who are probably much more likely to pick up on the grift and respondly negatively to it.
"What if I had devoted myself to cancer research? What would you say about how I felt about cancer?"
What kind of question is that?
This is a bit reductive but:
I'd say that you had an unhealthy interest in things that go wrong and get out of control. And at some point, you'd realize that if there were a cure for cancer, you'd be out of a job.
actually kill cancer in human beans
(laugh) I know it's a typo. Or a spellcheck. I'm still laughing.

And you, like the dumbest or the most dishonest portions of the Trump base presume that any Trump opponent is a leftist. You’re the modern day McCarthyites except that they had a modicum of idealism about them.
Jonah Goldberg, the author of “Liberal Facsim” is a leftist?
Bill Kristol is a leftist?
Steve Hayes — quite possibly the sternest Clinton critic of any columnist in America — is a leftist?
George Conway III, a chapter President of the Federalist Society and appellate counsel for Paula Jones versus Bill Clinton, is a leftist?
Rex Tillerson, Jeff Sessions, Gary Cohn, Gen. John Kelly, John Bolton... leftists?
Chuck--appeals to authority rarely work.
A recent promising and unexpected development in cancer treatment is the use of dog dewormers like fenbenzadole. Look it up! Even the NIH reports positive results in mice studies and there have been reports of success in humans. Better stock up now because once Big Pharma gets hold of it, it will be unaffordable.
I’ve been to Big Gay Ice Cream in the Village, and it’s certainly decorated in a big gay way, but the ice cream was so so.
Don't they sell at MSG, too? I had like a soft serve cone. It was ice cream so..yay!..but otherwise unmemorable.
Does this kind of stuff play to lefties outside of metro NYC? These Bloomberg commercials would seem to travel about as well as Crazy Eddie commercials...
Orange man is bad. Therefore Bloomberg is SO bad, he's even better. That's what I get from the Bloomberg ad.
Umm, ok, Chuck. So you're saying that that list of non-Leftists also have no idea what motivates and moves Trump? Good point by you, I agree.
Personally speaking, the more I hear from him the more I'm warming up to Bloomberg; sort of like the way I did with Trump. Still don't think I can trust Mike though, got a way to go for that. I didn't trust Trump either until after he was elected and started doing stuff.
Bloomie is a stubborn asshole forcing everyone to bow down to his weird off the wall ideas on what is good and bad for everyone. But all of his grey matter is worthless at substituting his ideas for the thousands of brilliant decisions free people make 1000s time better than that elite asshole with his checkbook and a stubborn streak.
Now I want to try MSG on ice cream. If it works so well on popcorn what could possibly go wrong?
Nonapod: I think that's a very fair assessment of what bloomy is shooting for.
All those pussies are big gaping vaginas just like you Chuck. And hacks. Horrible hacks.
I came for the comments and stayed for the ice cream! I agree: Tillamook is good, one of the benefits of living in Oregon.
I, too, mute commercials and still see a heckuva lot of Bloomberg ads. The most recent shows a boxing ring. Yes, a boxing ring! I could not make the mental connection between Mike Bloomberg and boxing/fighting. At least they didn't show the candidate in shorts, working out in the ring.
Tomcc: You don't have to live in Oregon. We got Tillamook in WA and also here in AZ. It's also available in every Western state and at least as far east as Atlanta. So, folks, don't bother with 'Gay' ice cream when you can buy Tillamook.
I see it's even available in Madison, WI.
I see it's even available in Madison, WI.
Purple Door Ice Cream is better.
Howard, Dr. Longo will sell you that cancer-curing diet in a 5-day box of low calorie vegetarian meals for just $249.00 plus shipping and handling through the company, Prolon, he founded to sell it.
Also, three cheers for Kroger's Private Label ice cream. The Southern Butter Pecan has more nuts in it than a Bernie Sanders rally.
Now I want to try MSG on ice cream. If it works so well on popcorn what could possibly go wrong?
One cannot improve upon the perfection that is ice cream.
Mockturtle: I'd have expected that Tillamook would be available in WA and northern CA. I seem to remember that Tillamook was a supplier to the Fred Meyer grocery chain before FM was acquired by Kroger. I believe Kroger advised them that they'd have to be able to increase their capacity in order to keep their position in stores. Glad that it's worked out for them!
Most recently here in PHX, Mini Mike has been running a lot of Mike+Barack ads. You would get the impression that Bloomberg was Obama’s right (or is it left here?) man. Not sure why they think that that ad will resonate here. Maybe the calculation is that he has to win the nomination before he can run for the middle. For me, hid better ads highlight all of the jobs he has created. The reality is that he is really the only remaining Dem candidate who has created jobs. The rest are politicians whose ideas in job creation involve designing more counterproductive jobs programs, like Obama’s Porkulus spending bill. Ok, except maybe for Tom Steyer, whose job creation was in coal mining and the like. Better to have just ignored that, instead of reminding all the Dems that he made his billions raping the environment.
My father used to have an old wood-barrel ice cream maker with a hand crank. We'd all take turns churning.
We have Tillamook AND Beecher’s in Georgia now!
My father used to have an old wood-barrel ice cream maker with a hand crank.
One Christmas my brother bought the family one of those. Each person received a wrapped portion of the device. (I think I was 7 or 8). I think I got the paddle/stirrer. Had no idea what it was for.
Rabel: yeah, he claims to get no money from it (meh). He does publish the macro nutrition requirements so you can do it at home. I figured it would take about six or seven avocados a dozen cans of mixed vegetable soup a couple cans of olives and a small bag of almonds. Maybe $25 for the week.
’To the extent that a feral, demented, narcissistic sociopath has any special understanding of “fear” apart from his moment to moment existence.’
I hate that you, of your own volition, voted for a feral, demented, narcissistic sociopath. Sad!!

I was pushing my eight year old Grandson on the swing the other day and out of the blue he brought up the Bloomberg ads. I guess to cover all of the bases, Bloomberg also puts his ads on the cartoon network.
A hot fudge sundae with coffee ice cream is the bomb. Just saying.
There's a good article on line which shows that Bill Kristol and the Bulwark have been funded by a left-wing Billionaire for YEARS. The Leftists have also been funneling money to "The Dispatch" another false flag "Conservative" website.
Not surprising since the difference between Bill Kristol, Jonah Goldberg and Charles Sykes and your typical NYT/WaPo left-wing trump hater can be measured in Millimeters.
Bloomberg's most effective ad was the Obama "endorsement" ad. He shows Obmama complimenting Mike Bloomberg, leading peeps who aren't paying attention to think Obama is actually endorsing Bloomberg for POTUS.
Of course he's not. The clip is from 2012 or 2014, but it makes Black folks think Bloomie has the Obama blessing.
