"As Mike Bloomberg celebrated his 48th birthday in 1990, a top aide at the company he founded presented him with a booklet of profane, sexist quotes she attributed to him."

"A good salesperson is like a man who tries to pick up women at a bar by saying, 'Do you want to f---? He gets turned down a lot — but he gets f----- a lot, too!' Bloomberg was quoted in the booklet as saying. Bloomberg also allegedly said that his company’s financial information computers 'will do everything, including give you [oral sex]. I guess that puts a lot of you girls out of business.' At the time, some Bloomberg staffers said, they laughed off the comments in the 32-page booklet, 'The Wit and Wisdom of Michael Bloomberg,' as a macho side of one of the nerdiest men on Wall Street.... After The Post informed the Bloomberg campaign that it planned to put online a copy of the full booklet, spokesman Stu Loeser said, 'Mike simply did not say the things somebody wrote in this gag gift, which has been circulating for 30 years and has been quoted in every previous election Mike has been in.'"

From "Mike Bloomberg for years has battled women’s allegations of profane, sexist comments" (WaPo).

And here's the booklet.

From the booklet. I read it. His favorite song is "My Way." He likes to mention blow jobs. Like this:

people will flock to the Bloomberg/Clinton ticket!
The only thing that will be hard to sell will be Life Insurance for Bloomberg...
No WAIT! Come to think of it; it would be an EASY Sell; 'cause Life Insurance don't cover suicides

If you are reading Drudge, you may already be a Bernie Bro.

I'm looking forward to Bloomberg's comments being swept away as "Trump did the same thing", so that we can get past the Democrats façade of "norms". After all, President Clinton kept women in business, if you know what I mean and I think Bloomberg does.

This type of publicity will add another 4 inches to Mayor Bloomberg's height. It's not fair, I know, I feel your pain. Get over it snowflake life's not fair.

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

The knives are out. Bloomberg is making decent headway, rising in the polls, most likely, I think because he is burying everyone else in political ads. How to compete? Make him look like a misogynist, or just a sexual predator. Then no self respecting womyn or SJW could ever vote for him. You don’t think that Amy, Pocohauntis, or even Howdy Doody Buttplug would ever do that sort of stuff?

Rory म्हणाले...

It seems obvious that Bloomberg would poll on VPs, so the interesting question is who would want the story out the most - Bloomberg, Bernie, or Clinton?

Gosh, Bloomberg has a lot of this loose lips shit, doesn’t he? Not that it makes a blind bit of difference to the average LIV or Free Stuff voter.

Is there something about "blow jobs" that creates a comments clusterfuck?

Please stay on topic and avoid distractions.

Drago म्हणाले...

Howard: "Don't worry Drago libtards are on the case to defeat wokeism"

Too general.

So far, it's just a couple who have been emboldened by a few comedians speaking "truth to power".

Still, if I may paraphrase Winnie without making obama-fans weep (since obama hated Britain) its a good sign but its not the end, or even the beginning of the end, but perhaps, perhaps, its the beginning of a real "beginning".

Larvell म्हणाले...

I’m amused at the thinking behind changing blowjob to [oral sex].

Drago म्हणाले...

In response to Althouse's admonition, if Bloomberg squeaks in, which is still difficult to imagine given where the base is, suddenly, as if by magic, guys saying things like "when you're famous....." will suddenly become no big deal and why is everyone making a big deal out of this kind of stuff.

National Review and The Bulwark will suddenly vomit forth article after article proclaiming "The Conservative Case For Why Electing A Guy Who Says Things Like This In Public Is Actually A Good Thing". David French will probably take the lead on that.

rcocean म्हणाले...

I'm trying to remember what the culture was like in 1990. Today, that kind of stuff is definitely out of bounds, but back then, if I recall correctly, you would be considered a prude if you objected to that kind of talk in the office.

A power-hungry man likes getting blown? I never heard such a thing.

Definitely crude, but is it wrong?

rcocean म्हणाले...

Believe it or not, The Bulwark Boys have already written a "The Conservative Case for Bernie sanders". Y'see Trump is just so DESTRUCTIVE that we can afford 4 years of Socialism but not 4 more years of Trump. IOW, "Conservative" has been thoroughly destroyed as a political label. Its completely meaningless, except as a way for Liberals to fool people.

Yes.

And so is Bloomberg.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

This is all old news to people who follow all politics closely. At some point since Bloomberg announced he was running, I have posted about this booklet either here or on Powerline. However, it will probably come as a surprise to Democrats outside of NYC.

It will hurt him because of where his potential base is, and I think it is pretty obvious he did say most or all of these things during the time he was building his business. You should read the entire booklet- it is very misogynistic. Some of the quotes are funny and insightful, but the overall impression made on me was that it demonstrated that the man has a strong mean streak when it comes to women in business. If he were 20 years younger and started his business at the same age did, he likely would have never said any of these things- the world did change after 1990 in this regard.

Robert Cook म्हणाले...

"But... but... Orange Man bad!"

Yes.

And so is Bloomberg.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

This supports my reasoning for predicting Bloomberg will refuse to participate in the upcoming Democratic debates. Klobuchar, Warren, Biden, and Buttuvwxyz will have to go after him just to keep Sanders in sight, and this huge ammo in a public forum for doing so.

Reminded me of the happy 80's. I heard basically all of the same jokes while working for an outfit that sold financial products 83 to 89. Think it's stupid funny that we may get two 80's NYC billionaires facing off. Talking the mainstream parties are just Tweedledum and Tweedledee as folks used to say in the 70's.

Wince म्हणाले...

I think there's a different Bloomberg allegation that will be difficult to defend.

Insider trading related to his Bloomberg Terminals.

From his own Bloomberg Help Center. ..

Q: Is price information on the website updated in real time?

A: Data on Bloomberg.com are delayed by at least 15 minutes.

https://www.bloomberg.com/help/question/price-information-website-updated-real-time/

Does that mean other news and other information is also subject to similar delay, which would allow someone on the inside to trade on?

Kind of the same principle as in the movie "The Sting", where the big scam was called "The Wire", where they delayed Western Union reports of horse race results.

Mark म्हणाले...

I think it is pretty obvious he did say most or all of these things during the time he was building his business.

So what, then, do you make of his staff's denials?

JAORE म्हणाले...

Sure I was racist, but that was in the past.

Sure I used money to buy my ways past the rules on a third term for mayor, but that was then.
Sure I bought my way into the current race, but I'll continue the payoff even if I don't make the cut.
Sure I'm notorious for sexism in my personal life and corporate life, but. oh so long ago. Plus it wasn't really me.

Yep, a swell fall-back position guy.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

"So what, then, do you make of his staff's denials?"

They are relaying Bloomberg's lies, or he is letting them do so passively.

Robert Cook म्हणाले...

@Wince:

Don't you think insider trading is SOP on Wall Street?

Marshall Rose म्हणाले...

I've said this before...

Is this worse than wearing blackface?

We all know that as a democrat it makes no difference what sin can be dragged out of the past.

Accusations made up out of whole cloth are enough to doom republucans, yet dead girls and live boys have been proven time and again to be forgivable if you are have a D behind your name.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Mark,

Do you think an underling would have presented such a booklet to Bloomberg and his other employees if the quotes themselves weren't authentic? It isn't like this booklet was put out anonymously- someone did it openly. 1990 wasn't the world of 2020, so he wouldn't have done it today. I think the change is a good thing, but I definitely believe that Bloomberg did make those jokes during the 1970s and 1980s- I am just old enough to have known that world.

William म्हणाले...

Wasn't there a time in the recent past when telling dirty jokes showed you were free from the prudishness of past generations?....If there were a death pool among the various septuagenarians running for public office. Bloomberg would not be my first choice. There's something about having a billion dollars that keeps you fit and vital. Blowjobs probably help too.

Centuries. Tammany Hall was founded in 1789.

Mark म्हणाले...

No, I totally believe he said it.

The question is whether Dem people are going buy into the lie that he didn't. Or whether they will know that he is lying, but not care.

Or whether Republicans are smart enough to take advantage of it. Many of them have already proven their strategic stupidity (again) by rushing to Bloomberg's defense to say he isn't a racist in saying that all the crime is in the black neighborhoods and that the answer is to throw them all up against the wall and frisk them.

J. Farmer म्हणाले...

@Michael K:

Centuries. Tammany Hall was founded in 1789.

True, but I meant specifically the buying of black votes. Obviously there were no black votes to buy in 1789.

Jeff Brokaw म्हणाले...

I’ve got news for you: Wall St is absolutely filled with guys who talk like that. It’s the dominant vibe, not a fringe thing.

It comes with the territory. These people, mostly men, are giant risk takers on a daily basis, and journalism dweebs, risk-averse politicians, and office drones literally have no idea who they are comparing themselves to and what that lifestyle is like. To say they are “confident” is just starting to scratch the surface.

I read “Liars Poker” by Michael Lewis back in the late 80s and have no illusions about mild-mannered Wall St types. Highly recommended, it’s funny as hell, well written and a great story about his introduction to that world.

Jeff Brokaw म्हणाले...

Save your outrage for something important. The ways that people talk — people you don’t even know personally — when you are not around them doesn’t really impact you in any way, does it? It’s actually none of our business.

This kind of “gotcha thirty years later over something trivial” is petty and exhausting. It’s gossip. News consumers need to show disdain for it or it will never go away.

Are we up to the challenge, as a nation? I’m not so sure...
