"The bathroom is simultaneously more personal but less revealing than the bedroom. If you film in your bedroom..."

"... people are going to judge you on what stuff you keep around or what posters you have on your walls, said Joshua King, 14. It can feel too revealing. The bathroom is neutral, even uniform, but still feels intimate. 'It’s quite awkward to film a TikTok, so the bathroom is an easier place to do that,' he said.... The most common bathroom portrayed on TikTok is the type found in millions of suburban middle-class homes. The aesthetic in general is Home Depot: a neutral colored sink and low countertop with a massive fixed mirror above, with composite doors and air-conditioning vents.... Bathrooms with busy wallpaper or yellow lights can be problematic. And TikToks shot in messy bathrooms don’t perform as well. Ryan Ketelhut, 17, said that shooting TikToks has made him clean his bathroom at home more often. 'I keep it cleaner now because I am in there making TikToks,' he said. 'You need to have all your stuff and all your candles and whatever else not strewn everywhere. I had to clean up a little bit before I filmed my last TikTok. I usually have clothes laying in the bathroom. I cleaned the sink out a little with a Clorox wipe and I sprayed down the mirror so it’s not as grimy.'... 'I should be moving to L.A. in the next month or so,' Mr. Alberto said. 'A hundred percent I’m going to make sure that I like the setting of the bathroom. It’s a silly thing, but the videos on my channel that get the most views are in the bathroom.'"

From "We’re All in the Bathroom Filming Ourselves/It’s got lights and it’s got action. The American bathroom is the stage set of the moment" (NYT).

It's interesting that these kids want attention to themselves as individual persons but they do not want to appear within a space that reflects their individuality. They're choosing the neutrality — Clorox-wiped sterility. Don't reveal too much. See me! Don't see me!

ADDED: I'm reading the comments over there, and they're all harping on that "We're all" in the headline. Oh, they're not all saying that. I'm just using a figure of speech, the one the NYT readers are too stodgy to let the NYT use. All that work writing the article, gathering cool new stuff, and the boring readers get stuck on the first 2 words. Eh. Serves the NYT right. That's what you get for thinking you can bring the news about teenagers to the middle aged folks who still read the newspaper.

There was a time the human race had so much potential. This is where we are at now.

We’re all? How many people are making content for a video channel? I’m amazed that after 10+ years of bathroom selfies, we’re still getting duck lips and spittle stains on the mirror. Amazes me how many people don’t bother to clean the mirror, the thing they’re actually taking a photo of.

Matching towel sets are a must.

It's true, the messy rooms are distracting. Yuk. I'm reminded of the great Anna Kendrick: Naked selfie your life away, like go do your thing...but clean your room!

How snobby is the NYT? "Home Depot: a neutral colored sink and low countertop with a massive fixed mirror above, with composite doors..."

Eek! Composite doors!

The kid sounds interesting. The Beatles used to practice in mum’s bathroom for the acoustics.

Matching towel sets are a must.

My mother had towels that were “for decoration.” She’d get upset if we actually used them to dry our hands.

In other words, don’t be like Whitney Houston’s bathroom

The acoustics are better in the bathroom, if you play a guitar or lute.

Tiffany Eckhardt (Australian Folk Singer and composer) recorded her first album "Girl Guitar" in a laundromat, for the acoustics.

Scott Adams reports the report that TikToc in its user terms takes control of who they follow on twitter. In particular apparently drops following of conservative content.

Kleenex (generic brand) is good for drying hands, or in general for anything you buy paper towels for; and a lot cheaper in use. If a major spill turns up you just grab multiple tissues for that case.

Keep a box in the bathroom; except don't flush them. They don't disintegrate like TP.

Don't listen to the old man: flush the jizzy Kleenex, kids! Even if you've got your own bathroom!

My friend solves this problem by only jerking off in the shower, which I find unfathomable. Who wants to climax while standing?

Teenagers, especially the boys, are the biggest conformists out there. They don't even go for nonconformity in their clothing. When the doors open in the morning at a high school, even if there's no official school uniform, the boys walk in all wearing nearly the same thing. It's no surprise teenage boys making videos would go for the most nondescript room in their house.

CStanley म्हणाले...

What Eleanor said. My takeaway from high school fashion was that the kids who wanted to be nonconformists all ended up conforming to some subgroup anyway, so what was the point?

In the adult world the observation in the post also reminds me of real estate. Realtors will tell you that your home should look clean, tidy, but completely void of personality. They don’t state it that way of course but the result is that you look at Zillow listing photos and can’t tell one house from another.

Nonconformists all look alike.

I do not TikTok and apparently cannot as we have real wood doors throughout the house, bathroom included. Love them, but they came with the house.

I have noticed that frequently when I have lived or traveled with a group of people for any length of time eventually all the conversation comes down to bowel movements and now I'm thinking its just one of mandelbrot's fractals and the same things happens civilization wide

As far as “less revealing,” you might have a look at some selfie fails. It seems that there is a simple device that attaches to the wall of a shower by a suction cup that seems pretty popular.

Doesn't this blog sometimes parse particular hyperbolic words in headlines? Or am I thinking of my other daily read, James Lileks?

So, if the decor is neutral blahsville, that makes the tiktoker's individual character stand out more. They are filming themselves, not bath appurtenances.

Howard म्हणाले...

rehajm: yeah they're conformism makes individuality stand out more. Just think of Star trek with all the characters dressed the in the same bland uniform, yet their personalities are sharply distinguishable.

Shawn Levasseur म्हणाले...

I think the use of the bathroom for this is more a function of there being a mirror, so the self-videographer can see what they are doing.

Front facing cameras on phones reduce this effect to some degree. But such cameras are inferior to the rear facing cameras, and viewing one's self on a phone screen at arm's length is harder than looking into a mirror.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

So the reason for having a clean bathroom is not because it’s a place that harbors a lot of germs. No, it’s so you can make TikToks.

mikee म्हणाले...

If one records in a neutral bathroom, the focus for the viewer is on the person, not the background scenery.
