Street Justice

Newspapers put out extras - those were the days before television, before the Internet, when kids ran up the streets shouting: "Extra! Extra! Read all about it."

The word was out, and San Jose station KQW began broadcasting the news: There would be a lynching tonight, Sunday, in St. James Park.

"There was no element of doubt in this case ... the men had confessed," said San Francisco Superior Court Judge Timothy Fitzpatrick. "While ordinarily we cannot condone such happenings, from a judicial standpoint, I can only say, in my own personal opinion, they did a damned good job."

Ya know, I live in Deep Blue Montgomery County, MD and I gotta say, that for people leaving in The Time Of The Great Trumpian Fear, where The Resistance is the only possible stance for a moral person to have, people sure seem to be out & about shopping, having a good time eating out at restaurants with their families or dates, or just going about their seemingly pretty damn good lives without worrying about when the Trump admin's Sturmabteilung are coming to get them.

Even the recent Latino immigrants are out with their families at the local restaurants, double proof that there's little fear of ICE & that the rising tide of Trump's economy has lifted their boats as well.

I mean, it kinda makes ya wonder if a lot of this is, well, a pose...

We'll see what happens. In my opinion Iran has to respond or they will be viewed as a paper tiger. They must respond to American targets and not just allies. Of course SA and Israel must be on alert too.

Today they made a big deal of revenge talk. They raised a red flag over some mosque. They said they have identified 35 American targets. Bold talk. How can they back down now?

Then Trump raises their 35 to 52 (one for each hostage) Iranian targets.

Make no mistake this was not a risk free operation. Reports say Bush, Obama and Great Britain all passed on opportunities to take out Soleimani.

We will see if Trump is the impetuous, hot headed, shoot from the hip president his distractors insist he is.

I think this is the election right now. If the ME goes south, Trump may even be impeached.

Allow me to offer a much simpler, cheaper, and easier way to protect the US soldiers in Iraq: withdraw them from Iraq.

Second) Order the Space Force to imitate Curtis LeMay and reduce Iran to bouncing rubble.

My point being that nobody was seriously contemplating US forces in Syria first to try to topple Assad and then to try to defeat the Caliphate that our attempts at toppling Assad allowed to take hold. Just because there are no plans "on the table" at the moment does not mean that plans will stay off the table. We've already upped the ante by reimposing sanctions, pursuing "maximum pressure" against the Iranians, and justifying our military deployment in Iraq as an effort to contain Iran, even though our purported mission was to help Iraq defeat ISIS.

@Gahrie:

Are you claiming that Islam does not consider itself to be in a war of conquest to convert the entire world to Islam?

No, I don't believe there's a single thing called "Islam" that operates as a hive mind and has a singular belief and a singular purpose. A salafist and a sufi both practice Islam. But that said, I don't believe you will ever get a separation of church-and-state or any kind of "reformation" in Islam, because the doctrines are not just spiritual in nature but include long instructions on how to form and run a state. Christianity, in contrast, was started by a Jewish apocalyptic and then by Paul's desire to create a universal church replacing the original covenant with the redemptive power of Christ. But that's the Muslims' problem, not ours.

What is Islam's view on the status of Spain and Portugal?

Not sure how you determine what "Islam's view" is, but let's say I concede for the sake of argument that "Islam" had designs on Spain and Portugal? So what? They can want the sun and the moon, too. Doesn't mean they'll get it. And Spain and Portugal have every right to defend themselves if someone tries to take it. But do you know any Spanish or Portuguese who think they need to do nation-building in Central America to protect their territory from an Islamic takeover?

Get your heads out of Trump’s ass.

“Soleimani, the longtime commander of Iran's elite Quds Force and a revered figure in that country, largely engineered Iran's strategy of using asymmetric and paramilitary tactics to overcome its major disadvantage: Its formal military is no match for major fighting forces like the United States.

"What the Iranians have in front of them is a menu of potential routes they could take. It could be directly or indirectly," Naysan Rafati, an Iran analyst at the International Crisis Group, said.

Iran's response could take many forms, targeting U.S. individuals, assets, interests, allies or some combination. It might not be immediate and could play out in the Middle East, elsewhere or in cyberspace.

Nick Rasmussen, former director of the National Counterterrorism Center and an NBC News contributor, said Iran's overseas capabilities can be viewed as three concentric circles.

In its immediate neighborhood, Iran could put together a response almost immediately, such as this week's assault on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. In the broader Middle East, it might take Iran more time, but its proxies could still threaten U.S. personnel, business people or tourists, Rasmussen said. In the rest of the world, including Southeast Asia and Latin America, Iran's capabilities are less advanced — but not negligible.

"The point is they're not starting from zero almost anywhere. There's always something they have, almost everywhere," Rasmussen said. "It's hard to defend against that because it could be almost anywhere."“

“Here are some potential targets for retaliation by Iran:

U.S. military assets

The United States has troops currently staged throughout the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, including in Iraq, Syria, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Since the 1980s, Iran has armed and trained a web of Shiite militias in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and elsewhere, staging lethal attacks on American targets and allies. The proxies allow Iran to exert military and political influence at relatively low cost, while forcing adversaries to think twice before launching a direct attack on Iranian soil.

Iran wields extensive political influence in predominantly Shiite Iraq, where Soleimani's Quds Force built up and armed militias that targeted U.S. troops.

Iran's partners in Iraq could stage attacks on the 5,000 U.S. troops deployed in Iraq, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, the American consulate in the northern city of Erbil, Americans working in the oil industry or the hundreds of contractors who support U.S. troops and maintain the Baghdad Embassy compound.

Aides said he worried that no response would look weak after repeated threats by the United States.

When Mr. Trump chose the option of killing General Suleimani, top military officials, flabbergasted, were immediately alarmed about the prospect of Iranian retaliatory strikes on American troops in the region.”

It's easy to get Americans pissing in their panties about phantom threats 5,000 miles away, but you can't get them to realize that they are being systemically dispossessed of the country their forefathers built. I think this general was such a key guy that the idea of Iran doing immediate action is wrong. I think we have to wait for all the pieces to resort themselves. He was holding down reform in Iran and spreading war with militias who were acting on his orders and plans. Now they have to get in guys as militia leaders who will act on their own but together. I bet that most of them are more like the Dem candidate gaggle than like Suleimani and there will be co-ordination problems. Maybe nobody really knew his plans, so then what? Maybe all his militia leaders hated each other - he looked the kind of guy who'd be keeping everyone jealous and uneasy about everyone else. And then too, there might be reform in Iran and in Iraq so then these out of country militias wouldn't get paid. Or suppose you send militias out in the streets and crush the young. And then tell them to get in uniform and die for Iran or Iraq?

I sure the Iranians and their friends can throw some bombs (as they were planning to do anyhow) but the home base is not secure and the big bosses aren't agreeing. You think these volunteer troops will fight their best? Maybe they're asking about these "pallets of cash", what's that all about and why do they only get 80 dollars a month. Maybe they're whispering about Suleimani's villas

By savages, I meant the Iranians and Iraqis and Saudis and Syrians. (Not that all or most of the people there are but enough are). Honestly, the Iranians, being Persian and Shia, are a bit more civilized.

I see no reason why we are friends with the Saudis but have some huge problem with the Iranians. The Wahhabism/Salafism that Saudi Arabia exported as much as its oil is a lot worse than anything Iran did to the US.

After 9/11, it would have been much better to go into Saudi Arabia and wipe out their clerics. Kill a few princes as well to make our point clear. And pull their visas and ban them from ever immigrating time the US.

But W is a corrupt idiot. The Saudis were his people. He was much more concerned about them than Americans.

I can understand why Obama wanted some detente with Iran but he didn’t distance the US much from the Saudis either. And his blinders as to Green Energy made the Saudis and Iranians oil more valuable (and Russia). And Obama went into Libya, Syria, and back into Iraq to help out our European Friends. They want to stop the refugees coming to them by trying to stop the fighting. Instead of sinking their ships in the Mediterranean.
