Writes Amy Walter in the last paragraph of "2020 Democrats Face Their Stress Test" (Cook Political Report), which talks about the importance of being able to take a punch and to punch back. As different candidates come to the fore — Biden, Warren, and now Buttigieg — each faces a "stress test." I've got to say that headline caught my attention because I misread it as 2020 Democrats Fail Their Stress Test. Aren't they all failing when they come into the spotlight and face their stress test?
Oh, wait, here, at Drudge... here's Biden stepping up for another stress test:
I don't know when that photo was taken, but the viral moment was his getting all pugilistic was some old guy who had the gall to ask him a question — how DARE you ask me a question! — at some town hall in Iowa yesterday.
The link goes to "Biden finally finds social media buzz with viral Trump video, voter spat" (Reuters). Well, yeah, anybody can get buzz by doing something awful.
"You're a damn liar, man," Biden told the man.... "No one has said my son has done anything wrong," Biden said. "Get your words straight, jack."... Biden... challeng[ed] the man to a push-up contest or an IQ test - and appeared at one point to call him "fat."... A Biden campaign aide later said online that Biden had said "facts," not "fat."He clearly said "fat," but I believe he intended to say "facts." It's just that he was looking at a man who was fat and he made one of those horrifying slips that we all hope we never make.
Now, people are interested in the Iowa man, who, it turns out is a former Marine and he's also 83, so that's 2 more reasons it was stupid for Biden to act like he wanted beat the hell out of him. The man is quoted in The Daily Mail:
"He [Biden] didn't have the guts to explain the situation, and that's what I wanted.... He got p**ed off and stomped around … I wish he had explained in a decent tone of voice why he got his son in that position over there and in my opinion he had no business whatsoever sticking his nose over there.... I am 83 and I know damn well I don't have the mental faculties I did when I was 30 years old... I know for a fact my mental faculties have slipped since I hit the 70s. I got a friend in New Hampton who is 105 years old and he can do push-ups, so it doesn't mean anything about how smart you are."

One reason to keep the first-in-the-nation caucuses in Iowa... solid Midwestern guys like this. Love it!
Biden's had so many Howard Dean moments, everybody stopped counting.
He was gonna call the guy 'Fatso', but cut off at 'Fat....'
Complete Joe Biden speech:
"You're a damn liar, man," Biden told the man.... "No one has said my son has done anything wrong," Biden said. "Get your words straight, jack. I'll flip you like a cheese omelette, sonny boy. I'll beat you like a red-headed stepchild, Jack. If CornPop were here, he'd beat your old ass. Back in Wilmington, I used to eat guys like you for lunch, Man. Stand up, Chuck!
"It's just that he was looking at a man who was fat and he made one of those horrifying slips that we all hope we never make."
But most horrifying to Slow Joe was having to face and take responsibility for the actual facts. Hence the mad evasion.
Hmmmm, could it be that old Joe never read How to Win Friends and Influence People?
It’s possible. It only came out in print in 1936.
Don Draper, “Yes, Sterling Cooper’s best advice for improving your bottom line is to insult both your customers and your would-be customers. It's a proven tactic. When they ask questions about your products, make sure your salesmen approach them in an intimidating way. Then, when they’re in the customer’s face, challenge them. You’ll corner the market in no time.”
“Oh, yeah, another thing. Be sure to call your customers a liar. They’ll appreciate it. Really, they will. And if you call them a 'damn liar,' they’ll be buying your products until the day they die.”
Like I said yesterday, that was a huge stumble. If I was the GOP I would save that clip for TV ads during the convention.
Huge fuck up. Major over-reaction. Biden will not be the nominee
Can any of this be construed as 'Malarkey'?
I guess not, as Joe has branded this the 'No Malarkey' campaign
That picture of Biden reminds me of Statler the balcony heckler from the Muppets.
Can we get that former marine on the ticket.
Republicans love a happy warrior. One of the best things about Trump rallies is he's having fun as he ridicules his opponents.
Democrat preferences don't have a handy label like that, but if they did, it would be Democrats love a passionate warrior. They want to believe their champions feel it deep in their bones and they are willing to turn a blind eye to excesses in service to the right causes.
That's why, to the right-wing mind, left-wingers are hopeless hypocrites--people with the right intent are granted absolution for a great many bad acts. But if you don't have good intent, then forget it. Even good acts don't get you credit.
I'm very surprised Biden's staff allowed him to take questions from voters. When he was in Council Bluffs earlier this summer, he didn't. And he said "good afternoon" when it was about 11:00 am.
Biden is a coward. He doesn't want to be in uncontrolled situations. Notice how he gives very few interviews to the Fake News. Hillary NEVER took questions from voters during her Nebraska and Iowa appearances; about six I attended.
If I could ask him a question it would be what did he know - and when did he know - about the Obama-Biden Administration's spying on Trump.
Joe isn't going to be the nominee. He's a joke. Always has been. Too stupid to be President.
When Biden challenged the guy to a push-up contest all I could think of was Lloyd Bridges playing Izzy Mandelbaum on Seinfeld...
AA said: He clearly said "fat," but I believe he intended to say "facts."
Sounds get jumbled when your teeth fall out while talking.
Biden immediately conflates "wrong" and "criminal."
His and his son's activities in Ukraine (and China, and where else?) were "wrong" by their own public admissions, but have not yet been determined as "criminal" by an official investigation.
"it's just that he was looking at a man who was fat and he made one of those horrifying slips that we all hope we never make."
Why would anyone choose not to say the word "facts" just because they were talking to a fat guy? This explanation is illogical.
I was reminded of the infamous Crispin Glover David Letterman fracus so long ago.

It's go time!
It's one of those huge multilevel fuckups that used to end serious campaigns but when you're scraping the bottom of the barrel for a viable candidate...a minor faux pas.
...maybe it's time we circled back to the fake Indian...again...

Joe is a mess. I actually feel sad for the man.
Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a congenital liar and a cheat and he should never be president, but he’s past his “sell by” date and it’s really getting embarrassing.
Put the man in Shady acres already. He would be right at home telling all these stories and probably think he’s still on the campaign trail.
I rather enjoyed the first season of "One Punch Man". Looking forward to season 2.
The story about the author is also quite interesting. He was an executive that could not draw so the original comic was quite crude. The idea was interesting, got a following, got better graphics, and away they went.
Be careful what you wish for: One Punch Man, early on, had to face Crablante, a half man/half crab foe who wore only tightie-whities.
Biden's response just about guarantees that he'll be peppered with questions like that (if his handlers allow questions in the future).
Burisma
BHR (we haven't even scraped the surface there. One of the firms they invested in has been charged with IP theft.)
Hunter's coke issues
Hunter's stripper issues
And before somebody says those last two are off limits, remember that Joe took Hunter with him to China on AF2 when he lined up the BHR deal. It doesn't matter that he's Joe's son; he's a giant security risk.
I wish he had explained in a decent tone of voice why he got his son in that position over there and in my opinion he had no business whatsoever sticking his nose over there
In the absence of any plausible good explanation people are going to infer the worst.
But the cold, hard truth is that there really is no legitimate explanation other than the obvious one (the selling influence). Everyone knows it, and it's indefensible.
And I'd like to present to you the frontrunner in the the Democratic primary. Joe Biden. Everyone sees the senility setting in. No chance he lasts 4 years. WTF. Democrats choices seem to be senility, socialism or serindipity.
As contemptuous as I have become of Democrats, I am still shocked by the arrogance of their leaders and the complacency of their rank and file. It’s as though, once elected, graft becomes an entitlement and stupidity and seditiousness the norm.
Of course, I am an apostate from the Party and, thus far, harshly critical. If the Democrats take the Presidency and Congress, I will have to tone it down. Assuming the impeachment hearings are a sign of anti-Constitutional things to come, guns will be outlawed and apostasy from the Party will become a capital offense.

I know he's a liar (and one who, unlike most Presidential-level politicians, seems to lie impulsively and out of rude passion or momentarily wounded pride, rather than political calculation), but when has he been a cheat?
@Phil
At a press conference he'll say candidates' kids are off limits and some conserve-leaning outlet should ask him if Barron Trump is off limits. He will waffle by saying Trump isn't a 'candidate', he's an incumbent. Watch.
One Punch Man, aka Caped Baldy, has many more abilities than his signature punch. He is ridiculously OP (over powered) in all regards, which is his narrative point. Amongst other abilities are: super speed, invulnerability, jumping high, super strength... For instance, he survived being blasted to the Moon, held his breath and jumped back to Earth.
Really an amazingly deep bit of writing, and highly recommended.
Quoting myself, "Huge fuck-up. Major Over-reaction."
Should've added "and he ain't done." Goose is cooked. Cooked by the one-question-man.
Well tough guy Biden did play football in high school--a wide receiver and defensive end. Sort of a both way player. And of course Slow Joe has always liked to have it both ways. Slippery guy when it comes to facts. If he can't tell a story two ways, he won't tell it at all.
Also, Trump is a little One Punch Man-ish himself. His opponents confidently whip out all their usual finishing moves -- sex scandals, calling him "racist," civil service anklebiting, impeachment hearings, whatever -- and to their mounting astonishment and horror, none of it works.
On the other hand, though, the humour of OPM is that the main character is so bland and understated, whereas Trump's public persona is cartoonishly exaggerated.
""No one has said my son has done anything wrong," Biden said."
Why lie so blatantly? Is it really Biden's position that nobody has said it was wrong for his son to be collecting $ 1 Million/Yr. to sit on the board of a company for which he had zero qualifications?
Biden sounds like he is either out of touch with reality or a brazen liar.

Read an interesting write-up on the character [last year?] on how he came to possess his power(s). His stated way, though honestly believed by him is just not "plausible" and that is recognized by all of the other characters of that world. Found it an amusing/interesting read. I don't even think the author of the character really knows.

It was an abbreviated statement. What he actually meant was:
""No one [that matters] has said my son has done anything wrong," Biden said."
Biden: ""No one has said my son has done anything wrong," Biden said."
I, Bay Area Guy, am someone. And I say you and your son did something wrong. Specifically, you allowed your son to use your name and office (Vice Presidency) to get a no-show job for $50K/month at a corrupt Ukranian energy company, Burisma. Further, you threatened to withhold millions in US foreign aid, if Ukraine did not fire a special prosecutor investigating the corruption of Burisma. This is called a "conflict of interest."
I have no idea what Biden meant to say because he says unpredictable things at random. But aside from that he said fat because he meant fat. An insult fits there.
Biden is older than his age and becoming increasingly deranged. He always a bit kooky. I've always liked Biden and his chummy style, which feels like a throwback to a more bipartisan era. I really do wish that back-slapping cheeriness was the norm in Congress, but everything is so heated and polarized now, or at least that's how the politicos want to make it seem to voters. I find it all so repulsive. I'm conservative but I would gladly trade getting my way 100% for a healthy, functioning, bipartisan, horse-trading, earmarking Congress where legislators from different parties get together over drinks or dinner and aren't accusing each other of treason.
But I have to say this incident, and his performance on the trail in general, has been disqualifying.
Why do you think that a clearly articulated and fitting insult made in the midst of a sudden rush of belligerent anger was not intended ?
Biden was about to use a parenthetic "fatso". Talk about the "facts" not fitting the context.
Biden said, “Well yeah you do, but look, fat--, here’s the deal—”
I'll vote for the old guy over Biden any day.
In Biden's case it's "One Punch, Man."
It’s spelt Luxury Yacht but it’s pronounced Throatwarbler Mangrove.
iHe clearly said "fat," but I believe he intended to say "facts."
Just prior to the disputed "fat" line Biden said; “You see it on the TV.” (referring to the Ukraine accusations). The man denied this and Biden shot back; “No, I know you do. And by the way, that’s why I’m not sedentary.” Biden was fully intent on belittling the guy based on his weight, he just caught himself before he said "fatso".
I keep forgetting that Ann backs Biden.
And that shades her coverage of him.
Walter just outed her son as an otaku incel.
I keep forgetting that Ann backs Biden.
And that shades her coverage of him.
Not necessarily.
See Althouse comment at the inception of Biden's campaign:
How dare Biden rest his campaign on a blatant lie — a lie that has been used to stir up fear and racial discord?! The hypocrisy of offering to bring us together and embrace lofty values when he is either repulsively ignorant or just plain lying!
I could not finish watching that video. I tried, but I couldn't force myself. It's utterly toxic bilge.
If Biden does not come forward and retract this video and apologize and commit himself to making amends, I consider him disqualified. He does not have the character or brain power to be President.
Posted by Ann Althouse at 10:33 AM
I think Biden was actually going to say "fat-ass", but caught himself at the last second.
He is senile and stupid - but those are great quals for the Democrat front runner for President.
We are so lucky to have such intelligent and calm people in politics.
What a fiasco:
..Biden turns his back on someone he hopes to represent, and walks away;
..Biden yells at said constituent, scolding, calls him "a damned liar";
..security forces move to eject the humble constituent;
..Biden demands determination of facts through trial by combat;
..audience huzzahs accolades to gallant Sir Beatemup.
I'm tellin' ya. This early campaigning puts the putrid political process on parade. Two halves of the team - Dems and Media - whipping each other off the Crazy Cliff.
Sure he meant "fat." Didn't he just challenge him to do push ups or go for a run?
BAG, duly noted. Thank you.
Ann, I apologize if I've miscast any endorsement.
Cruel neutrality to the bitter end!
Oh:
..left out the noble fat shaming part.
If I could ask Slow Joe a question it would be "When did you learn that tariffs on our products were killing our manufacturing jobs base and why didn't you try and correct it??"
That question would highlight his lack of attention to a major problem for over 45 years in office.
I'm an unabashed Trump groupie.
I see everything through that lens.
My son loves One Punch Man...
Writes Amy Walter in the last paragraph of "2020 Democrats Face Their Stress Test"
Haha, I assumed it was still Biden talking about Hunter.
Biden with his fist and frown and "c'mon, man" and "you're a damn liar" and his push-up contest bring back traumatic grade school memories. He may not win the millennials, but he should strike a chord in anybody who was in school a few decades back. The man from Malarky is lucky he didn't show his true age and call the guy a "dirty dog double liar."
I don't know what he meant to say or if he "meant" to say anything at all. Sometimes the words are coming out so fast that they leave any meaning far behind, especially if on has some kind of mental impairment. "Listen, facts" isn't quite standard English, and that he was trying to say "Listen, fatass" is far too definite a conclusion for us to make. I suspect he may have had both words (and a lot else) jumbling around inside his head and what came out was what came out.
"One Punch Man" reminds me of Romney. The talk was that he had a "glass jaw" -- he could dish it out but he couldn't take it, and one well-directed blow could destroy his candidacy. The talk turned out to be right (except that he wasn't that good at dishing it out, either).
The mythology seems to be that somebody will get caught in an open mike situation and doom their campaign. Sometimes it happens, but politicians immunize themselves nowadays. They say so many crazy, over-the-top things that one more dumb utterance doesn't kill them.
At a press conference he'll say candidates' kids are off limits and some conserve-leaning outlet should ask him if Barron Trump is off limits.
Won't happen. That was the last question Biden will take from a voter,.
Biden clearly called the man fat and sedentary, a losing move in the land of the fat and the home of the Hoveround.
Funny when the 83 year old said he heard about Hunter Biden on MSNBC —no way said Joe!
Must have been FOX!
Biden didn’t SEND his son to work for Burisma. The man probably said that they way people say someone “broke his (own) arm”, or even “he had his (own) arm broken”, as if he intended to break it.
I don’t really care what Hunter did or does. I care about what corrupt actions the former VP may have done on his behalf.
Scott Adams was going on and on the other day about how Joe Biden is just the nicest guy. Hm
Balfegor asked "but when has he [Biden] been a cheat?"
Does plagiarizing speeches count as cheating? https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/joe-biden-plagiarism/
Biden can be "One Punch Judy."
I'm also aghast at the people like him, (i.e. Hillary), who go round on speaking tours, campaigning as though nothing's wrong! She's committed more felonies than Capone, Nitti and Clyde Barrow combined. And people still eat the peanuts outta her shit. Just remarkable.
I'd be more impressed if it was a one-inch punch like Bruce Lee could do.
"The one-inch punch is a skill which uses fa jin (translated as explosive power) to generate tremendous amounts of impact force at extremely close distances. This "burst" effect had been common in Neijia forms. When performing this one-inch punch the practitioner stands with his fist very close to the target (the distance depends on the skill of the practitioner, usually from 0–6 inches, or 0-15 centimetres). The timed chaining of multiple muscle groups[2] contribute to the punching power while being imperceptible to the attacker. It is a common misconception that "one-inch punches" utilize a snapping of the wrist. The target in such demonstrations vary, sometimes it is a fellow practitioner holding a phone book on the chest, sometimes wooden boards can be broken.
"The one-inch punch was made popular in the west when demonstrated by Bruce Lee at the Long Beach International Karate Championships in 1964. Bruce Lee learned the technique from his Wing Chun training in Hong Kong. He used the art of Wing Chun as his basis of the art he founded, Jeet Kune Do."

Presidents Children are off limits. Except when the "Children" are:
49 years old.
We bitterly cling to the remnants of civilization and its religious/moral foundation. There is a second way, competing interests, and the audacity of raw, unadulterated power. Let everyone choose a universe in their own image. The last viable man, or woman, wins.
No one knows what Biden meant to say.
He said "listen fat", so?
C'mon, man.
To protect himself and his wayward millionaire kid from the corruption accusation, the anti-bullying Sloe Joe must keep punching at it and punching at it and punching at it.
Just don't ask him to open his kimono about Burisma.
I'm not kidding!
Biden is a punk, a tough guy, in scare quotes. A bully. He's the type to go after someone or challenge then when he can't get to them or knows they won't engage. Not too bright to be going after someone whose vote you are trying to win.
Ill prepared, he knows full well what has been said and alleged about him, Ukraine, and his son. He should anticipate this question, from supporters and critics, and have a stock answer that he's memorized. But, shite, what do I know about running for office.

"What's that, you say?" Mayor Pete asked.

Except Trump's policies are working, which makes you the BS-er.
My recommendation to you: Stop pretending the policies are not working and go back to your previously hilariously wrong claims that obama deserves credit.
Both positions are untenable of course, but at least one of your BS positions would at least acknowledge the economic reality that people are experiencing.
It'll be fun to see which one you choose to run with.
The "fat" man who got in Biden's face, said he was a Warren supporter. Once I heard that, I wish Slow Joe would have punched him out.

Agree and was thinking along the same lines.
But if your son works for a Ukrainian company, if only for appearance sake, you need to not be the point-man on Ukraine, because it is a pretty obvious bad look. You let the ambassador or the president or the sec of state do this work and the VP recuses himself. You don't even discuss Ukraine policy.
Oh yes. And when your son goes to work for a Ukrainian company, you publicly announce that you will be recusing yourself and completely out of the loop on Ukraine policy.
If Biden had done that, you can bet Hunter wouldn't have been a board member of Burisma for very long.
Of course Biden took the opposite course and BS peddlers are all, "what's the problem"?
That woman almost ruined One Punch Man for me. That was the most boomerish attempt at a metaphor that I'm almost sad for her. I hope she lost a bet or something and that's why she included One Punch Man as a reference.
By the way, I hate anime but my spouse loves it. I love One Punch Man, though. Check it out. It was on Netflix.

Most, but not all. Lots of them won’t see the difference.
Coincidentally, on the same day of this post on One Punch Man, James Lileks had a leading item on his blog on an old comic strip "The Outbursts of Everett True", which he describes as "Mr. True was a fellow who responded promptly and violently to minor, careless, anti-social behavior, or inadvertent displays of human nature. Do the wrong thing in his presence, and he would beat you half to death." According to Lileks, people loved it.

Keep up Skylark that was previously answered after it was asked. I got to say it was fun getting you yesterday but you're a good sport.

Read the Constitution.
Congress has the power of the purse.
Why can't yours and LLR Chuck's beloved Nancy keep the spending down?
Whenever I hear "liberal" State-shtuppers complaining about Trump being a liar, I consider the source: people whose socioeconomic agenda consists basically of legalized looting and plunder, and whose spiritual ancestors gave us "No truth but socialist truth."
so to recap:
Democrats have Biden, senile, corrupt Biden losing what Iowa white votes he had calling this old white guy fat and sedentary.
Warren who reminds everyone of a bitter school marm hectoring voters about how she'll raise their taxes (sure, just for the rich).
Pete who, well, I'll just remind everyone that the reason Prop 8 passed to ban gay marriage in California was because of the minority vote. The polls that have Trump at 30% of the black vote will actually be true if Pete's the nominee. Or an underestimate. And it is physically impossible for the Democrats to carry Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin if they're less than 80-82% of the black vote.
Howard is pissed that the Fed didn't give obama negative interest rates instead of just keep the easy money pegged at 0%, which they did for just about the entirety of obama's tenure along with a $1 Trillion dollar juicing of the economy every year of obama's tenure.
The number of Howard postings complaining about this federal pumping of the economy and 0% interest rates during obama's admin remains at approximately ZERO.
And just think, if Howard had ever said a single word of concern about this during that period he would then have some legitimate standing to complain now.
But like LLR Chuck and the other leftists, Howard never did, so naturally, his complaints now also register at approximately ZERO on the seriousness scale.
Thanks for playing Howard. Perhaps its late enough in the day now for you to put your pants on and change out your mustard stained t shirt.
