"I guess Justin T doesn’t much like my making him pay up on NATO or Trade!"

ADDED: Speaking of Trump and movies... I wondered why Jon Voight is trending on Twitter today. It's this:

AND: That Voight clip was from a few days ago, but Voight is boosted today by this Trump tweet, which just says Voight is "fantastic" in a new TV role and in a bunch of old movies.

UPDATE: Apparently, the edit to "Home Alone 2" was made years ago, before Trump became President. So: false alarm.

When I was a young 20-something edgelord I used to think that putting "In God We Trust" on money, motifs, and government buildings was somehow sacrilegious because of America's official policy of separation of Church and State and the freedom of religion.

I don't think so anymore. People forget that a few years ago we killed Bin Laden. A truly evil man, dedicating his life to evil and the destruction of thousands of lives in 2001.

When they popped him and brought out his body they confirmed affirmatively his death by saying over a secured-satellite connection, "serving God and Country."

Separation of church and state is not the same as separation of God and state. [Although I'm sure atheists could argue it does]. Unlike England, we have no official state Church but it doesn't mean we have to keep God out of the picture. He was, after all, a huge factor in our founding.

BTW, Voight could be cast as Jimmy Carter. If the occasion arose. Which it won't.

Chuck म्हणाले...

Wow, Althouse, I didn't think you'd blog this story. It has been such an embarrassment for the Trump family. Because, naturally, dumb Trump cultists imagined that the Trump scene was cut because of some anti-President Trump bias in Canada. Don Jr. went off on it in a psycho tweet that is laughable. Of course.

The simple fact is that about 8 minutes of the film were cut to fit broadcast time limitations... in 2014.

The most interesting thing I have read about this howler of a story came out of an interview that Matt Damon did with The Hollywood Reporter, where Damon explains how all Trump movie cameos came about:

Have you ever met Trump?

No. The deal was that if you wanted to shoot in one of his buildings, you had to write him in a part. [Director] Martin Brest had to write something in Scent of a Woman — and the whole crew was in on it. You have to waste an hour of your day with a bullshit shot: Donald Trump walks in and Al Pacino’s like, “Hello, Mr. Trump!” — you had to call him by name — and then he exits. You waste a little time so that you can get the permit, and then you can cut the scene out. But I guess in Home Alone 2 they left it in.

Voight's comments capture the rising anger in the heartland. The Left seems determined to take this beyond politics into a coup, risking open civil war. An illegitimate impeachment pursued through 2020 would poison a Democrat victory in the election.

I would say that one doesn't have to personalize everything like that. It's highly unlikely Trudeau made the decision himself. But Twitter has a logic all its own, and you know that references to Trudeau will show up in the comments and retweets.

About NATO: we ought to have close relationships with the UK and France (to the degree that we have ever had a close relationship with France) because they still have viable militaries and can do things with us when it becomes necessary. For the rest, I can't help thinking that people in 1920 may have been asking, "Why do we have troops in Germany? What's the point of that?" Pulling them out didn't work so well that time.

What was the "punch" thrown by "the left" in this case?

The CBC edited the film, for time, in 2014. Is that the "punch"? Is the CBC "the left"?

Pretty clearly, the one person who went overboard on this story was Jr. Presuming an insidious, massive media conspiracy when there was none at all.

If there was any doubt as to this being true LLR-lefty Chuck fully dispelled any remaining doubts with his Christmas Day obama messiah-worship/adoration commentary. It has to be read to be believed in how insanely worshipful of obama it was.

There was another Trump tweet, and I am surprised that Althouse didn't include it and that none of you have mentioned it. It was Trump's tweet on the morning that Fox & Friends embarrassed themselves with a half-baked story about media "censorship" in the CBC editing of Home Alone 2. Trump wrote that "the movie will never be the same (just kidding)."

This could have been handled as "a joke." But it wasn't. Not by Jr; not by Fox & Friends; not by millions of Trump fanatics all on a hair trigger for any insult to PDJT. They all took it seriously. Which makes the blowback all the more delicious.

Not unlike how LLR-lefty Chuck and his lefty allies went after Sarah Palin and demanded to see her medical records to prove she was the actual mother of Trig Palin.

We see this psychosis on the left/FakeConLLR-left over and over and over again.

Just think about how bad its going to be when Trump wins reelection!!

BTW, anyone else catch the reports of corporate cash repatriation that was a key component of Trumpian policy that LLR-lefty Chuck said would never happen?

LLR-lefty Chuck swore up and down that Trump would never get manufacturing job increases in the US and Trump would never achieve even a single completed Trade Deal and that it would be impossible for Trump to renegotiate NAFTA and that repatriation of corporate cash back to the US was also a never to be realized pipe dream!!

Meanwhile, $1 Trillion in repatriated cash later............

If the question is when FakeCon LLR-lefty Chuck's predictive capabilities reputation will recover, a first-pass answer is never.

We really ought to make a long long long list of all the predictions our FakeCon LLR-lefty Chuck made that blew up in his face and then extend that list with all of the silly democratic talking point predictions that Chuckie is pushing now that will also implode in the coming months/years.

I mean, I know it would take a significant amount of time to break out ALL of LLR-lefty Chuck's moronic failed economic and foreign policy predictions, but time might be saved if we just gathered all the previous lists made of Media Matters lies and Rachel Maddow's weird musings since those comprise the bulk of what banned commenter LLR-lefty Chuck has been regurgitating here at Althouseblog.

Many of us may appear boorish or rude in our interactions with neurotypical (NT) people. As a generality, we are weak at recognizing non-verbal social cues. Autism, however, is not an excuse for being a jerk. And it is possible for us to be both, as it is for NTs.

Diagnosing yourself is a facile way to find an excuse for behaviors and feelings that may have nothing to do with autism. It's not a fad that you can just buy in to. It is a difference in the hardwiring of the rain. We are not handicapped, just different.

Fullmoon, my retired English teacher wife told me decades ago how to easily discern when a personal pronoun should be subjective or objective: put the appropriate but unnecessary verb after the pronoun as a test, as in: "Besides, others do it better than I can" as opposed to "Besides, others do it better than me can", and the proper form becomes readily evident.

Have a happy and ever more prosperous New Year!

Oh, and just to see if I can also share in some space in what seems to be the vacuum of Chuck's head today...oh, never mind.

I wouldn't go that far, but I never got the excitement over that movie. Jon Voight's bumbling attempts to be a hustler were pretty amusing, and it was nice to hear the "I'm walking here" line in its natural context. But that was about all I took away from the movie. Also was never a big Jon Voight fan, although his role in Anaconda approaches so-bad-its-good territory. I'm not sure what accent he was going for, but he ended up sounding like Ricky Ricardo.

No, but neither is Trump Tower. It is a mixed use retail/office/residential building. There are indeed several Trump branded hotels in New York (although the Trump International Hotel and Tower is the only one actually owned by Trump, and was not built by Trump), but Trump Tower ain't one of them.

Yes, but the fact remains, Trump's scene in his hotel was cut from the movie, NOT from the ESB. So what is your point?
And, you cannot disagree, with all govt regulations today, ESB would take way more than a year to build, if at all.Even with all the automation and green tech available to contractors.

My point was simply that the movie producers picked the best place to represent opulence, class and grandiosity. TrumpTower is a generic reference to any of Trumps fantastically large buildings. Everybody knows that.
And, I will pretend to not notice your obvious avoidence of the fact that Trump also owned Empire State building, another "Trump Tower".
