"Buttigieg, like Barack Obama before him, speaks in orderly paragraphs that seem to exist primarily to advertise a calm, deliberate temperament."

"But as his campaign has become an unexpected obstacle to the left’s favored candidates, these deliberate paragraphs have become reliable rage objects. Excoriating Buttigieg’s comments, a Vice headline cried that 'Buttigieg’s Version of America Is Basically a Caste System.' Days later, addressing students at Grinnell College, Buttigieg was assailed for his higher-education plan and accused of 'spreading lies.' Activists unfurled banners reading 'Wall Street Pete' and 'Youth to Pete: You will kill us.' ('"You will kill us"?' Buttigieg said. 'That’s really mean.')... The Buttigieg backlash... is most intense within his own cohort of young, mostly white, college-educated liberals, who are torn between a mounting discomfort with their own privilege and an instinctive comfort with their own class.... Buttigieg... calls to mind... a type of young person who flooded eagerly into politics in the early Obama years: the emotive, irony-deficient millennial, shaped by generational traumas (the financial crisis, Iraq and Afghanistan) but not embittered or radicalized by them, excited by abstractions like hope and change.... [The new left that evolved out of Obama's base is] in direct conflict with Mayor Pete, one of their own who seems not to have evolved much at all.... The gravitational center of the rage against Buttigieg has been Very Online, as has the maximalism of its tone — its insistence that Buttigieg, by thriving within the American architecture of capitalism and privilege, must personally embody all its worst qualities. On left Twitter, it is axiomatic that Buttigieg is not merely a relentlessly ambitious striver but an actual 'sociopath.'"

From "How the Internet Came to Loathe Pete Buttigieg" by Charles Homans (in the NYT).

ADDED: The top-rated comment at the NYT is from Rick Shenkman:
I love the fact that young people are impatient with the status quo, but seriously, do they believe that the possession of a good idea is tantamount to seeing it implemented? As a presidential historian I have been studying politics for decades. One thing is clear. Democrats implement big changes when they rack up large majorities in both houses of Congress and control the presidency. Only then. As no one expects the Democrats to win in a landslide in 2020 it’s delusional to think that we’re going to see changes on the order of the New Freedom, New Deal or Great Society anytime soon.

Mayor Pete realizes this. Beating up on him for being a realist is crazy.

Nobody else is gonna say it, but (in case no one noticed) blacks are making a reparations push, but gays started sucking up all the Civil Rights air in the room, so with Pete now distracting the nation's interest from us even further (He's GAY!) he's put himself....in the way...so he ain't gettin' no play. As Jesse Jackson would say. Hey. It has nothing to do with his being gay (!) except in the recognition they can be as rude and narcissistic as the French, so - because of their self-interest - they failed to recognize the highjacking of another's movement is hardly appreciated, especially when it doesn't advance blacks one inch in the direction intended. They died of AIDS. They did not die at the hands of murderous roving gangs of hetero men.

Crack, you appear to have enormous difficulty grasping something that should be simple to understand: that reasonable people of good will can be in possession of the same facts and still disagree about policy.

Here, let me try to make this easier for you to understand: Nobody disagreeing with you is unaware of, or in denial about these facts. Do I need to put that in all caps or repeat it a thousand times for you for that to sink in?

Simply adducing and repeating various facts about the bad things done to American blacks isn't going to persuade anybody to your point of view about reparations. Is ST unaware of the Tulsa Massacre? No. Is he denying that it happened? No. So why do you keep repeating facts that nobody is disputing, as if that constituted an argument for reparations?

Crack: I especially like the idea of you guys ignoring our dead - just as everybody thinks about whites:

Let me ask you again, Crack:

Is ST (or anybody else here) unaware of the Tulsa Massacre? Is he (or anybody else here) denying that it happened?

And more generally:

Are whites the only people who kill, plunder, rape, and enslave?

Yes or no. The questions require simple yes or no answers. Just want to clarify what your basic premises are here and if they overlap at all with reality. Yes or no. Simply addressing neutral fact here. Leaving aside for the nonce whatever value judgments may inhere in those facts in particular times and places.

Shouting Thomas म्हणाले...

Like ST, I'm just trying to "help" y'all.

Yeah, and I'm well positioned to do that.

I was born in a shack in the middle of the cornfields. It was more or less expected of males in my family that they would become drunks, bounce in and out of jail, and work at deadly hard labor jobs.

I found my way out.

The answer, Crack, on an individual level, is to cease engaging in martyrdom mythology.

There's no doubt that some blacks have been killed because of their race.

And, every other race, nationality, sex, etc., has its own list of martyrs and villains.

Man ! This thread went by fast once I saw that.

This is probably the reason why black medical students from Africa and the West Indies do fine and American blacks struggle.

Victimology is fatal, at least to accomplishment.

Personally, I attribute much to John Wilkes Booth. He put Stanton and the radicals in charge in the Confederacy after the war. The Johnson impeachment was part of it.

Didn't think so.

No, Crack thinks whites piled blacks on top of each other in appalling conditions and now they fight for scraps just like the Irish, the Italians and every other group has - your trying to separte us into some new brand of violent species is your racism showing.

I'd stop that before more people notice:

I hear "Racist" is not the look whites are trying to roll with anymore.

No, it's how the criminal justice system works in U.S. democracy.

People are only guilty of crimes if they are adjudged guilty by a jury. In the U.S., only those who commit a murder are responsible for that murder. Your belief in entitlement to racial revenge makes you a flaming racist.

Don't you ever get tired of begging, Crack? You could be doing something to improve your life, instead.

This stupid fucking begging you do is absurd. You're a grown man. Do something, you lazy ass beggar. Learn a skill that pays.

You should watch The House I Live In, a documentary about a white family and their housekeeper.

She left the South because white men were raping black women with impunity - in our lifetimes - not some long ago past.

Y'all got a warped view of America, but that's nothing new.

Crack: No, you're just denying MURDER IS WORTH ANYTHING TO THOSE WHO REMAIN - which is insane.

So, your basic premises do not, as a matter of fact, overlap with reality. They comprise fallacious inferences and a bunch of self-referential, self-sealing mental maneuvers too squirrely to have an official description.

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

Actually mr. shenkleman is wrong. "As a professional historian" he should have known that the filibuster, and the Southern democrats were the ones that prevented the Democrats from pushing forward more radical legislation in the last 87 years. After 1936 the R's could ally themselves with enough Southern D's to stop any Radical D legislation, even when the D's controlled the Presidency and All of Congress.

that situation no longer exists. The D's will get RID OF the filibuster the next time they control the Senate. And there is no "Conservative wing" in the D party anymore, at least not in Congress. Nor are there any "Mavericks".

How did this thread about Mayor Pete get sidetracked into a race discussion? As for Mayor Pete, of course he is full of it but then again so is every Democrat running. It's all Commie and Commie cultural crap down the line.

As for Crack's position on reparations he does have a point albeit more limited than he thinks. As I see it it's more akin to the reparations the Germans paid to the Jews. Compensation to the living victims and the immediate living direct descendants of the victims. That would preclude slavery but would cover victims of the various massacres in the last century along with those lynched and their immediate descendants such as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Now I might be all wrong and it's not to justify segregation, but one of the unintended side effects of the Civil Rights movement and the Welfare State was the destruction of Black vertically integrated areas and the rise of single motherhood in the remaining Black areas with it's social pathologies. How to "solve" this problem is beyond any ideas that have been put forward.
