Althouse had inspired me to get an e-bike but since I'm cheap and already have a nice Raleigh "comfort" bike, I opted for a conversion kit and transformed my 21 speed to an e-bike.

And she was right! I've bicycled more with this conversion kit than I have before. Where I once trudged up the subtle hills surrounding my home here in Oklahoma, or faced the fierce south or north winds native to my state, I now just zip along, thrilled to find the freedom I once experienced as a kid on his first bike.

Thanks, Althouse!

What is it with the solar engineering fascination??

Forty years ago, I took a class in solar engineering. How do you capture, and maximize your solar energy?

I remember reviewing the math for calculating the sunrise, and sunset at a particular latitude, and longitude. Yeah...you're always going to be disappointed with the times listed on your iPhone.

By the way, capturing solar energy is best left to plants. Please notice that plants are sessile, and don't need to go to the mall to get their hair blown. Trust me, I've had this discussion.

I saw a theatrical (well, Fathom) re-release of "The Cage" a few years ago. That's the original two hour pilot whose footage was salvaged as The Menagerie. Anyway, they had gone in and used CGI for all the original awful mid-60s TV special effects, and it worked surprisingly well. It was a good movie.

As for the Orion Girls, well, there's probably a Mike Love lyric in there somewhere, but I prefer Andorians myself.

3. I've actually caught quite a bit of the impeachment farce. What a joke. These people should be embarrassed and ashamed with such a feeble, dishonest attempt to negate the 63 million votes earned by Trump. If I were a Democrat, I'd be humiliated by this charade.

I spend a lot of time hanging out with the British Royal Family. I enjoyed the first two seasons of The Crown with Claire Foy and look forward to this new production with Olivia Colman. She was very good as Queen Anne. It's nice to see some people other than Judi Dench and Helen Mirren sitting on the throne....The Victoria series with Jenna Coleman is okay but a bit candy coated. Jenna Coleman was great as Dr. Who's sidekick, but she's way too cute and endearing to be a believable Queen Victoria. Maybe, in the interests of art, she can put on fifty pounds to play Victoria in her later year. ....The queen with the most dramatic and successful back story remains Catherine the Great of Russia. On Amazon, there's the Russian series, Ekaterina, about her rise to power, and it's very good.

It's a beautiful picture. Unfortunately, the correct caption - Sunrise in Wisconsin - explains why there's so much winter drinking here. Maybe later there'll be an even gray or, close to December 21st, a rich black. Then we could dispute about whether it was a rich black with streaks or a rich black with a single splash of less rich black.

A lot of people here seemingly are of the opinion that Schifty’s impeachment hearing has been a major bust. But I don’t think that the Dems running this scam are nearly as upset about their failure here as we thought they should be, and here is why.

First, a brief detour. Starting in the summer of 2016, we started hearing about the Logan Act, and how Trump and his campaign staff had violated it. We thought that it was silly. It had been used in over two centuries only twice, and would almost assuredly be invalidated by the courts if ever utilized for a prosecution on 1st Amdt grounds. Which, of course, is why it has not been utilized for well over a century and a half. But the key was that it is on the books, and indeed is one of our oldest criminal statutes, and has never been invalidated by the courts.

What the FBI had in the summer of 2016 was a counterintelligence (I.e. National Security) investigation based, apparently on predicates fabricated by the CIA. What they needed was a criminal investigation. They essentially needed probable cause to believe that a crime had been committed, , based on the counterintelligence information that they had received from Steele and the CIA, That is where the Logan Act came in. It was a criminal statute, never invalidated by the courts, that had been ostensibly violated by at least some of Trump’s campaign staff. And, voila, their Crossfire Hurricane investigation was launched as a criminal investigation of Trump and his campaign. And ultimately morphed into the Mueller SC investigation. Looking back, it is unlikely that any of the miscreants involved ever intended to prosecute anyone under the Logan Act. And it quietly disappeared after Crossfire Hurricane was properly launched. It was a pretext.

The Democrats had a problem. The Mueller investigation had a mountain of evidence that potentially could be used against Trump. Some of it came from the Mueller investigation itself. Some came from the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, including the fruits of those four fraudulently acquired FISA warrants on Carter Page (wiretapping up to two steps away, which covered Trump and much of his top staff). And some probably from the illegal FISA 702 searching of NSA databases discovered by NSA Dir Rogers, and shut down shortly thereafter. While the Dems in Congress had some of this information, they didn’t have it legally, which means that the House Dems couldn’t use it. This is the mother load of opposition material potentially usable against Trump.

I think that the original idea was for the Dem leadership in the House to just ask Mueller for the evidence, and he would just send it to them. But that idea fell apart last winter when AG Barr shut down the Mueller investigation before they could transfer the dirt to the House Democrats. And the Trump Administration immediately asserted Executive Privilege over the mountain of dirt that they could otherwise use against Trump. They couldn’t get it through their A1S1 Oversight power, since that doesn’t extend to the WH. But they might be able to under their A1S2 Impeachment power, with the Nixon precedent. And that, I fear, is where the current Schifty Schiff’s impeachment investigation fits in. They just have to convince one judge that it is a legitimate impeachment investigation, and off to the races. The have filed three cases, and the Obama judges in two of them have sided, not unsurprisingly, with the Dem House majority. Those cases, in order, are for the Mueller grand jury testimony, Trump’s taxes, and for the testimony of Trump’s attorney. The Obama judges in the first two instances sided with the House majority, and either, if upheld, would provide legitimacy for using the Nixon precedent for overriding Executive Privilege in an impeachment inquiry. And that means that the House Dems could acquire access to the mountain of Mueller evidence that is protected by Trump’s Executive Privilege. What this means is that the impeachment investigation is probably just a pretext for getting Mueller’s evidence and dirt on Trump.

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

In regards to my suggestion that the primary purpose of Schifty’s and Waddler’s Impeachment farce was to provide a pretext to override a Executive Privilege, tax laws, and grand jury protection laws through the House’s A1S2 impeachment power, first note that it seems to be working. At the District Court level, the Dems are 2-2. The first case, I think the one for Trump’s tax returns, the judge ruled for the Dems even before they had their House vote authorizing their kangaroo court impeachment. At that point, all they had was Palsi, Schifty, and Wadler announcing that they had an impeachment investigation ongoing, and this Obama appointed judge said “good enough for me”. Don’t need no House vote. The DC Circuit panel wasn’t much better. And, of course these Obama appointed judges are loath to issue stays until the ruling can go through the appeals process. But, of course, if their rulings are not stayed for at least a day or two, Schifty and Wadler will have their evidence, and can’t be forced to disgorge it. Remember, what they are really going for, probably, is just the legal provenance for evidence and dirt that they already probably have.

I noticed yesterday that Trump will very likely flip the 11th Circuit this week (yesterday’s confirmation made it 6-6), making it the third appeals court flipped by the Republicans (after flipping the 2nd and 3rd Circuits earlier). Even the infamously liberal 9th Circuit will likely be flipped by the end of Trump’s first term. But the appeals court furthest from Republican control, at both the District and Circuit court level, is the DC Circuit. That is where Obama and the Dems concentrated their efforts during his eight years in office. They knew, even back then, that that was where the action is in government overreach, and, in this case, Congressional intrusion into Executive power. It didn’t hurt that it was the one Circuit where Senate blue slips could be used to block court nominations, because DC doesn’t have home state Senators. This was a well documented effort by the Democrats, and it appears very much to be playing off, with the judges, so far, falling all over themselves to give Palsi, Schifty, and Waddler everything they wanted in terms of impeachment power over Trump and the Executive.
