"Despite its usage by academics and cultural influencers, 98% of Latinos prefer [terms other than 'Latinx'] to describe their ethnicity."

"Despite its usage by academics and cultural influencers, 98% of Latinos prefer other terms to describe their ethnicity. Only 2% of our respondents said the label accurately describes them, making it the least popular ethnic label among Latinos. Some have speculated that 'Latinx' resonates with women and Latino youth. We found no evidence of this in our study. While Latinos’ preferences for other labels vary by age, the limited appeal of 'Latinx' is consistent across generations and genders....  Paradoxically, ad agencies and political campaigns that believe they are being trendy by using the term may be alienating or confusing the voters and consumers with whom they are attempting to build meaningful connections."

From "Progressive Latino pollster: 98% of Latinos do not identify with 'Latinx' label" (ThinkNow).

American. Mexican. Peruvian... when in Rome. Then there is a dysfunctional diversity subculture: African-American, French-American, Mexican-American, and other 1/2 people... persons, not limited to race, ethnicity, skin color, subject to affirmative discrimination, color judgments, under, ostensibly, noble cause [corruption]. Fetal-American.

I'm Tejano (A Mexican-American from Texas) and as a Tejano, I think the term "Latinix" stinks of academic privilege. It doesn't just suggest indifference but hostility to any views other than their own. But, hey, thanks academia for telling me who I REALLY AM

Yeah Duh. Do these people actually know anyone from South or Central America? Would people from the middle east or Europe want to be referred to as "Europeans" or "Middle Easterners" instead of Irish, Italians, English, German, Greeks, Israeli or Egyptian?

A black man form Belize has nothing in common with a white man from Buenos Aries. An Indian from Bolivia has nothing in common with Cuban from Havana. Peru, Argentina, Chile, etc. have all fought war against each other. Having the same language means very little. And Brazilians aren't "Latinos" - they speak Portuguese.

I forget where but there was a good column about this a couple of weeks ago.

per the author of that article, unlike English, Spanish is a gendered language where almost everything is either male or female, so removing the gender just destroys the beauty and rhythms of the language. It is not done to serve any real problem that Spanish speakers have, it is just for people from another culture and linguistic heritage to feel good about themselves.

The article linked by Ann certainly supports what that person wrote. "Latinx" is a form of cultural imperialism.

Nancy Reyes म्हणाले...

it's worse than that.

Using the "X" as gender neutral is pushing the gender neutral stress on individualism agenda on Latinos, who are traditionally family oriented.

So this belittles the strong responsible father as "macho" and evil, and the loving protective mothering type as needing to be liberated.

Mexican. Even Hispanics with families living in Texas for generations refer to themselves as Mexican. I once worked with a woman who was born and raised in El Paso, and as far as I know never even set foot in Mexico, who referred to herself as Mexican. In Austin we have Hispanics from every country in Latin American, but none of them refer to themselves as Latinx. I suspect most of them haven't even heard of the word or the concept of Latinx, and would look at you strangely if you used the word in their presence. The few exceptions might be those who just graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Intersectional Studies.

Cultural influencers don't need to influence but 2% to remain in the staid-labeled position?

Makes cynical sense. Really smart people must have chosen that path in the land of the free. Let's hope government makes ALL smart people limit their thoughts to what the NYT or WaPo feels is worthy of liberty, otherwise what would the deplorably smart do? As a cynic, remember the questioning what use the question mark serves from a blogger who can't, for ego reasons, realize bringing up arguments for argument's sake indeed involves bias, as each and every choice, whether conscious or not, involves bias.

Editorial bias is real, and still no reason for any editor to feel as though they are indeed biased.

But history will show what they, if they write enough, feel is warranting their time more than the forgotten, unacknowledged themes/concepts/ideas not written of, and this indeed involves concepts of what one can reasonably conclude is interest/bias/feels.

And of course no one uses "Latinx," which sounds terrible, when they could use "Latino" or "Latina," which both sound great.

And the papers, cause I'm gonna rhyme
Right, jump right back up into the lime light
And I'm rackin my brain where the pain was
