"... this kind of stuff is just a really horrible look for you guys. frankly, it’s whiteness manifest..."

So wrote an aide to Kamala Harris, Mediaite reports, after a Buzzfeed reporter named Katherine Miller tweeted:
Hard to know if last night harmed or helped Warren, but think all can come together and agree a debate highlight was Warren telling Kamala Harris no about banning Trump from Twitter then just continuing with her point in the manner of shrugging off a Greenpeace clipboard person.
The Kamala Harris aide reacted to that by texting this to BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith:
hey i have talked to her directly a few times when she’s tweeted out stuff like this, and i told her i was glad she deleted this tweet, but this kind of stuff is just a really horrible look for you guys. frankly, it’s whiteness manifest. if kamala shrugged off a warren critique of how she wasn’t with her on Facebook, we’d get raked and she would get lauded as taking on corporate power. the blithe mockery here of kamala, while lauding warren’s style, is just not up to par. i say this to you just to be super frank and because i really like your guys’ work, the platform, and your reporters. we work well together across the board. but this is a bit problematic.
Smith replied:
Do you seriously not have real problems? This text makes me think you are totally, totally unready for an actual presidential campaign.
And I guess that aide wasn't ready to see the text made public.

frankly, it’s whiteness manifest... What a phrase! I could see using it jocosely, but not by someone running for president.

Sounds like it's time for Kamala to answer "Why should anybody white support you?"

And I'm guessing Ben isn't wondering WHY the text was sent. Odds are, it was sent because it tends to be effective.

hawkeyedjb म्हणाले...

"Whiteness manifest" is...?

Ignoring stupid calls for censorship? Ignoring petty complaints instead of treating them as national problems? Not taking unserious people seriously? Not making everything a race issue? Someone please, colorsplain it to me.

When Kamala becomes president and Putin swallows a couple of countries, she's gonna huff and puff and complain about his Whiteness Manifest. And that'll be a bad look for Vladimir. He'll think twice before eating another country.

"frankly, it’s whiteness manifest... What a phrase! I could see using it jocosely, but not by someone running for president."

You can't, can you. But here we are. Wokesters are running. Get used to it.

By the way, can you see someone running for president proposing Medicare for All, or confiscation of legally purchased firearms, or imposition of the Green New Deal, or an unconstitutional wealth tax? Or are actual policy issues too boring to justify a vote by artsy retired law profs?

Yet another example of a "moderate" lefty not being able to believe just that the far left really are "True Believers" in the nonsense they spout.

Believe it, Moderates. Believe it & act as if you will be first in line for the firing squad & the Gulag if the Far Left comes to power. Because, if history is any judge, you will be. They'll come for the Right, too, but the Right's got guns, lots & lots of 'em. You don't.

Progressive black talk radio from Chicago is filled with similar remarks so I suppose Kamala and her cohorts are simply saying what they think. It's like listening to Colin Kaepernicke and LeBron James criticizing China and supporting Hong Kong.

First and foremost...the use of "guys" there...is just a really horrible look for someone from the side of isle that pushes the entire problematic dogma that would also include someone saying a ridiculous statement like "whiteness manifest".

If the Socialist Party convention taught me anything, it's that you cannot address a group of human beings with the term "guys".

I'm also 100% in agreement with Insta. Why would you hire someone that can't capitalize properly?

I think YH makes a good point: AA seriously underestimates this, how seriously this nonsense is taken. The aide is referring to Warren, who is white, brusquely saying no to an intersectional. It does not matter what was said, such behavior is “whiteness [made] manifest” . It is oppression. The actual content is irrelevant, Warren has sinned.

Bay Area Guy म्हणाले...

It sounds less like "whiteness manifest" more like manifest stupidity.

It will be fun to chirp when Kammy drops out. What a poseur!

"Whiteness" is self-evidently bad and "whiteness" manifesting itself is self-evidently wrong.

The question, as usual, is what portion of this nation actually believes that--that and the attendant beliefs.

Certainly most of the "elites" do--people running campaigns, running studios, running magazines and newspapers, etc. They learned to believe that in their prep schools, their Ivy League universities, and their graduate and professional schools, from teachers and Professors who themselves strongly believe it.

The rest of us, though--do we? Do nice centrist people like Professor Althouse hold those same beliefs or do they just nod along with elites who do and agree to condemn non-elites who disagree as ugly or regressive? Maybe it doesn't matter whether fellow travelers (or useful idiots) actually believe if they'e willing to lend support to those who do, but I still wonder. Twitter isn't real life and the writers of the New York Times aren't the American people, but sometimes I'm afraid to imagine what most people actually believe.

Anyway when people say to TrueConservative (National Review/Dispatch, Weekly Standard/Bulwark, Commentary) types "you haven't conserved anything" they're mostly talking about difficult-to-delineate things like this. That the far (or once-far) Left's ideas on race have become so accepted and commonplace as to not merit mention by someone like the Buzzfeed recipient (notice his objection isn't with the idea of something bad being "manifest whiteness," or that as a concept, but rather with the fact of the complaint being about a trivial matter) is a testament to the failure of those Conservatives. They lost the Academy and think pointing to a legal victory or two is sufficient rebuttal!

HoodlumDoodlum म्हणाले...

Are we allowed to notice that Warren's base (as shown in her rally crowds) is awfully white--just as Bernie's was in 2016? As Biden's slips in the polls are we allowed to notice that he still has very high support among Democrats of Color?

I ask knowing that some things aren't allowed to be noticed--doing so is ugly and we can't have that.

This is an intramural squirmish, these birds are all on the same team "and work well across the board". They aren't fooling anybody. In this case Ben doesn't think Kamala would win against Trump and is in the process of kneecapping her so the better democratic candidate can be selected and win against trump. Nothing personal, it's just business. It's not like most journalists aren't unpaid Democratic operatives anyway.

Marc in Eugene म्हणाले...

I looked at Katherine Miller's Twitter. The first thing I take from it is that politics journalists have to be at least a bit loopy to spend so much time and energy on such ridiculous trivialities. The second question I had is, why did she delete the tweet? I didn't see where she explained why she did that; there is one in which she remarks that she "liked it".

Neither selective-child nor dodo dynasties. People are not so woke and drowsy to be trapped inside the sociopolitical construct that labels and judges their past, present, and future.
