"Toward the end of the book, Kantor and Twohey devote two chapters to Christine Blasey Ford and her decision to air her sexual-assault allegations against the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh."

"This, and the book’s finale, 'The Gathering,' seem appended, an anticlimactic climax. In 'The Gathering,' the reporters assemble 12 of the sexual abuse victims they interviewed (including a McDonald’s worker, Kim Lawson, who helped organize a nationwide strike over the fast-food franchise’s failure to address sexual harassment) at Gwyneth Paltrow’s Brentwood mansion to talk, over gourmet Japanese cuisine, about what they’ve endured since going public with their charges. The testimonials inevitably descend into platitudes about personal 'growth' and getting 'some sense of myself back.' At one point, Paltrow starts crying over the way Weinstein had invoked his support for her career to get women to submit to his advances, and Lawson’s friend (a McDonald’s labor organizer who came with her so she wouldn’t feel alone in a room full of movie stars) hands the actress a box of tissues. These therapeutic scenes paste a pat conclusion onto a book that otherwise keeps the focus not on individual behavior or personal feelings but on the apparatuses of politics and power."

From Susan Faludi's review of "SHE SAID/Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement" by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey. (Kantor and Twohey are NYT reporters, and the review is in the NYT.)

Interesting detail about Paltrow, the tissues, and the McDonald's workers.

Ref the story you posted of the two fast food workers who met each other.

This series of articles in many ways ignited the #MeToo movement, already smoldering in the atmosphere of frustration after reports of Donald Trump’s alleged sexual predations (a story that Twohey broke with another reporter) and the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape failed to slow the reality star’s march to the White House.

Startling in its honesty. #MeToo was a political ploy to stop Trump and deny conservative nominations to the court. At least we don’t have to pretend anymore.

I wonder if they had to cut out the chapter on the campaign worker who falsely accused Trump of sexually assaulting her.

Another cognitive dissonance. Why hold this meeting at Paltrow's mansion? She screwed Weinstein to jump start her career. Isn't she guilty of fostering the rape culture the other women or complaining about.

Why write this book. Why not write one with women's stories that are sympathetic. What's the point?

I don’t recall that.

A lot of people completely misunderstand Althouse’s tactics for encouraging discussion.

She tries, more often than not, to avoid stating her opinion. She’s quite good, really, at summarizing an issue or an event and leaving it up to the commentators to state opinions.

I get frustrated with this tactic sometimes, too. But, I’ve observed over the years that her strategy works over the long term in clarifying issues and leading people to the best conclusion.

Interesting that the article tries to celebrate the book as an example of "legacy journalism" at its best - as a search for the truth, as looking for verification and checking sources and combing through mounds of data - and yet at the end authors of the book uncritically accepts Christine Blasey Ford and her story.

If it's Amy Coney Barrett, it might be difficult but I'm sure they are ready for any eventuality.

She's pro-human rights, which is, in principle, a deal breaker for many liberals, progressives, and probably libertarians, too. I believe she is pro-choice: abstention, prevention, adoption, compassion, as are most people... persons, and perhaps everyone, but does not share the Twilight faith, indulge the Pro-Choice ethics, and will not be a "good American" and support the wicked solution. If the conservative women were hunted and judged as witches and conservative men were judged as warlocks, and if Sanders thought the female chauvinists were vicious, the catastrophic anthropogenic [political] climate change that will be forced by Judge Barret will be evolutionary in civil society. Then there is diversity or color judgment, sex chauvinism, and the politically congruent constructs or selective exclusion favored by "=" and tolerant people.

People assume that trading sex for career advancement is something that only afflicts women. It isn’t.

I have had many gay male friends who struggled to work in modeling, theater and film. Group sex parties are the normal, established method of making connections leading to deals in that milieu. The AIDS epidemic devastated the acting world. And whoring out for roles and recognition played a major role in that.

Or, maybe we just don’t have the same sympathy for men as we do for women. We assume the men want the sex.

Paltrow was also deeply involed with Weinstein outside of acting for years. No worries there, right? Paltrow isn't a #metoo: she's a #sheknew. And who knows how many non-Hollywood little people were preyed on by Weinstein in his capacity as a RHF board member.
