"Try to imagine yourself into the shoes of someone undecided on whether to support Trump in 2020. What argument against him do you think you'll find most persuasive?"

Asks Ben Wikler, Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, on Twitter, quoted by my son John on Facebook.

One answer John gives (at Twitter) is:
The worst argument is he’s “NOT NORMAL,” “violates norms,” etc. That argument itself isn’t normal; “politics as usual” is an insult, not a compliment. WI, MI, & PA residents voted for him knowing he’s far from a normal politician and unlikely to change. They liked that about him.

I do not agree. The civil service, even among such previously conservative sectors such as the law enforcement apparatus, intelligence services, and financial regulators, has been totally politicized on behalf of the candidate promising the most vigorous aggrandizement of government.

In fact, "politicized" doesn't even capture the severity of what's happened. "Weaponized" is more like it. And of course, no one outdoes the Democrats in promising the government employees' unions ever more revenue, more power, and less accountability.

See, that's the fatal flaw of the Dems. They have tried every argument against Trump.

Thing is this -- it's not all about Trump's flaws. It is about something -- anything -- positive from the Dems.

And the number one reason that Trump will likely be re-elected is the same reason that he was elected in the first place -- to stop the crazy left Dems.

People are not so much as voting FOR Trump as utterly rejecting the destructive progressive left.

Bob Boyd म्हणाले...

In order to identify the most persuasive, it might be helpful to list the arguments against Trump that are being presented.

#1 has been Trump is a white supremacist/racist/anti-immigrant.

Trump doesn't know what he's doing re the economy, will cause a recession.

Trump's trade war will lead to economic recession or worse.

Trump doesn't know what he's doing re foreign relations.

Trump's policies are bad for the environment.

Trump's victory was somehow illegitimate.

Trump is unusually dishonest.

Others?

If you react negatively to Trump on an emotional level, you may find any and all of these persuasive. But if you react negatively emotionally then you are not undecided. None of these arguments hold up well to serious, unbiased consideration.

Wikler goes on to say: His repellent behavior is extremely well-covered, even eg on late night TV. But his awful policies mostly don’t generate sustained coverage, so people not paying close attention simply don’t know about them yet.

But are his policies really awful? I would say the reason Trump's policies don't generate coverage is precisely because they are not awful. Quite the contrary.
Wikler calls for dispassionate analysis, but quickly fails himself to be able to maintain objectivity.

One condition- the economy is still as good a year from now as it is today.

Then the best argument is going to have to be a positive argument for how you are going to make things better than Trump has done in his first term- if you simply try all the negative arguments being used now, Trump is going to win 350+ electoral votes.

If the economy is in recession a year from now, then it will be tough for Trump to win no matter what argument the Dem candidate makes.

Chuck, you should tell people you know in Michigan that you voted for Trump and are now regretting it. I'm sure you'd be a hit at the high-paying legal job that you absolutely have.

If it was me, I'd start a primary candidate specifically attacking Trump on not having The Wall ready. They'd have to ignore the fact Congress and most of the corrupt federal judiciary are blocking it, and desperately try to refocus anger on the President instead of the cuckiest parts of Congress, but it might work. But I don't think Coulter is ready to sacrifice her viewers on a long shot, and no one else has the gravitas to make the attack stick.

And I don't even think a recession will be sufficient to defeat Trump. Soros doesn't have enough juice to completely wreck the American economy, and even moron economists agree that China has just about exhausted its capacity for tariffs, whereas Trump can escalate the trade war and bleed China dry. He can point to that plus the USMCA trade deal, while also pointing out the Dems want to sell out to China and their corporate sponsors. If it has any purchase with unions, like Trump's then-unproven 2016 pronouncements clearly did, this thing is over. No margin of cheating will be sufficient for the Dems to win.

It's impossible to look at Trump's first term and not realize that the core of the platform is offering a New Deal. Not to the people, but to American corporations. The free ride is over. You see a lot of multinationals slashing jobs, but American employment numbers keep on booming. That's partly down to corporations that love America, but also small/ medium sized businesses. Corporations that depended on mega subsidies and trade with China have suffered a lot, and will continue suffering.

But if 2020 starts with a recession, Trump can and probably will declare war on the corporations responsible. If you want to see wholesale war against globalist corporations, I have three words for you: progressive corporate taxes. Just the threat of it will probably keep most companies from buying into a plan to tank the economy. And if Wall Street is seriously planning to crash out, for whatever reason, Trump supporting a Tobin Tax will put paid to future disasters as well.

The President is much likelier to "win" a recession than businesses are. Americans, with very few exceptions, aren't dumb enough to buy into this idea that the mysterious economic crash after years of prosperity is all because Orange Man Bad.

Overwhelmingly, the answers are along the lines of "if you are not already decided against Trump, you are too stupid (racist) to engage with." Even if this is what a person truly believes, how can they think that this a good strategy to use to win an election? I can't tell if the underlying thinking is "This election is in the bag, we cannot possibly lose, so why even worry about trying to convince anyone," or "I don't care if we lose as long as I look good doing it."

No, that could easily be countered by the Democrat Party policy of deliberately importing sick children when there are already too many sick/underserved children of our own. In other words, should we save the world or save ourselves first? I realize that might be an oversimplified dichotomy, but the open borders policy championed by Dems is a new phenomenon and which deserves to be challenged. But Dems are hamstrung by the very notion that mention of such a problem will offend "hispanics."

‘Boston — Due to a change in policy by the Trump administration, hundreds of immigrant children receiving medical care in the U.S. are facing possible deportation. The children are in the country legally and many suffer from serious diseases, including cancer.

The family came to the U.S. legally in 2016 and applied for "medical deferred action," a program that allows immigrants to receive life-saving treatment for up to two years. But, this week they received a denial notice, giving them 30 days to leave the country or face deportation.

As part of new Trump administration policy, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services changed the medical deferment program, leaving hundreds of immigrant children in limbo. When CBS News reached out to USCIS, the agency did not give a reason for the sudden change in policy, but said Immigration and Customs Enforcement will now handle the applications.

However when CBS News reached out to ICE, they said it has "no policy or program to deal with medical deferred action," adding, there's "no plan" to take it over.“

“Earlier this month, immigration attorneys and their clients who applied for medical deferred action or a renewal of it began receiving rejection letters in which USCIS said it was no longer considering requests for the program. The letters also said immigrants not authorized to remain in the country should leave within about month or face deportation.

Like the more commonly known Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative for undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, medical deferred action was part of small set of temporary relief options offered by USCIS. The immigrants granted this reprieve would not be prioritized for removal by the government, which would exercise prosecutorial discretion.”

People who’ve had their work hours cut because of Obamacare rules are not as appreciative as Dumbocrats thought they’d be. For the ignorant, you know who you are, who don’t seem to understand why this new policy change is heartless and cruel. Documented or undocumented is not the entire argument. The argument is that we as a nation must rise above petty hate and bigotry and not lose our own humanity.

‘In August alone, the Trump administration laid out plans to make it more difficult for legal immigrants to use social services, eliminate limits on how long families can be detained at the border, and stop providing flu vaccines to migrants held in border detention facilitiesThe administration was proud enough of these efforts to announce them publicly, but there was one move so despicable that they apparently felt it would be best to roll it out quietly.

But there was one move so ugly that the Trump administration, apparently, felt it would be best to roll it out quietly. On August 7th, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) quietly eliminated a medical deferred action program that allowed severely ill undocumented immigrants and their families to remain in the United States to receive potentially lifesaving treatment. The decision to axe the policy was not announced publicly. Instead, families with pending applications were notified through letters from immigration officials informing them they have 33 days to leave the country or risk facing deportation. USCIS confirmed this week that it was ending the program.”
