"Along with traditional camp pastimes like talent shows and archery... every cabin participates in programs designed to build self esteem and challenge misogyny, transphobia and other prejudices..."

"... whether it be writing love letters to their own bodies or cross-dressing to understand how clothes reinforce socially acceptable gender norms.... ... Zypher Wildera, a 12-year-old cisgender boy from Santa Cruz ... chose the all-gender cabin partly to get away from his brother, but more so because he thought it would be a really cool group of people. Although he is friends with some L.G.B.T.Q. children at his school, adjusting to his cabinmates’ various gender identities and pronouns took a little time, he said. 'I call everyone "dude" and some people in the cabin don’t like that term, so I try to be very conscientious,' Zypher said. 'In boys’ bunks, and with my male friends back home, we’ll jokingly insult each other. But in this cabin, everyone tries to be as kind and generous as possible. It’s made me more accepting and I feel better about myself, too.'"

From "In an All-Gender Cabin, Summer Campers ‘Don’t Have to Hide’/For gender-nonconforming campers, a new all-gender cabin at Camp Tawonga was a rare respite from the outside world, where bullying and the feeling of not fitting in can make growing up difficult" (NYT).

It strikes me as good for children to learn how to operate within a group where the culture is to "jokingly insult each other" and in one where that's not the etiquette at all. Understanding social cues and adapting and getting along — these are good skills!

I can understand why in animal world it makes sense for the cubs/kittens to grow up with each other and for parents to not waste too much time when survival of each baby is iffy.
But for humans... will this model continue to make sense as life becomes less cheap. Always intrigued by someone like Jean-Paul Sartre who (as I understood it) grew up entirely around adults/tutors until maybe 19. What did he lose out on by never having his gut punched or his face pounded into the dirt by an overweight bully.

It's a secular cult.

I was reading more about Anne Hamilton-Byrne.

Having all your "children" dye their hair blonde and dress the same way is bad. And yet it's far more horrifying to have their genitals chopped off and "re-assigned."

The children who are abused in these systems are severely damaged emotionally and psychologically. And high suicide rates in both cases.

The normal male mode is competition through constant challenge.
I think that this is hard wired as it is present in every human society.
The likely advantage is to create resilience and, indeed, the ability to adjust, and tolerate social adversity, and moreover to lay the foundation for teamwork and spontaneous organization.

There are many ways in which "Lord of the Flies" misses the plot on human nature.

Kids learn from each other more than from their parents - there is a huge literature on "peer effects".

This cultural adjustment being forced here, for the sake of a very tiny maladjusted minority seems unnatural, and is likely to have negative consequences.

Kevin म्हणाले...

every cabin participates in programs designed to build self esteem and challenge misogyny, transphobia and other prejudices

I think this is where the left is falling apart: self-esteem is built on prejudice, the prejudice that you are unique and thus have something to offer the world.

"Nobody is special and we're all the same" leaves people with the idea they don't matter, they don't count, and the world would be fine if they just took a bunch of pills and exited stage left.

So all the Left can grab a hold of is that some people think they're special and we're better than them because we don't. It's the last pillar of self-esteem available - that not believing in yourself makes you the in-group.

Religion was a positive force in this regard: "we're all God's children and thus are unique individuals" had it right. We're all unique, but so is everyone else. Leave them alone and do your thing.

That's what's being destroyed in this culture -- it's become taboo to say or believe anything good about yourself.

And the left's solution to the inevitable drug and suicide issues is to hold self-esteem camps based on making discussion of differences a serious no-no.

Kevin म्हणाले...

This would be a great setting for a 'Friday the 13th' sequel.

Yes, but only the cis, white kids can be killed or it's sending the wrong message.

Kevin म्हणाले...

And who lets their children get tattoos?!

buwaya म्हणाले...

Humanity evolved in body and mind, including in things like behavioral tendencies, and the details of group dynamics. This is the outcome of millions of years and a million generations. Civilization has been just a blip on that scale of time, and moreover has changed the social environment so rapidly that I doubt the human animal has had time to adjust though the evolutionary mechanism of survival of the fittest.

We do know that this stuff is hard coded in animals, so there is no reason to think that humans are exempt. I don't think we have even scratched the surface of what is hard coded in the brain. It's curious that the cultural-intellectual default is a "blank slate", as Pinker put it, and not observed behavior.

I steeled myself and read the article.

My first response is "This is California, what else is new."

But, I find the entire vibe, at first disturbing, sad. I guess the idea of the Torah taken out for a camp fire sing in is even more disturbing than the lack of modesty.

At least until recently, one of the pillars of Judaism has been Tradition, and not in the Broadway/Film version. Respect for that Tradition does not mean blind faith, but respect in the Aretha Franklin sense.

What I feel here is a Country Club approach that ignores a chance to instill some of the greatest values of that Tradition: study, questions (LOTS of questions), and respect for others regardless of their values, approaches, or personal praxis.

Do not return to Mitzraim, the Torah and the Prophets repeat. It would seem that this is so in California.

""L.G.B.T.Q. children" ?

As a five-year-old boy, I knew that I very much wanted to see my cute, female classmates naked. At about the age of eight, I was under a tent-like structure with a seven-year-old girl and told her I'd show her mine if she showed me hers. She did and instantly, without even thinking, I bent down and kissed her vulva. So if I knew at that early of an age that I was hardwired to be heterosexual, there is no reason not to think that an eight-year-old boy isn't getting signals that he is gay.
