I had issues with the plot of Children of Men (why did he continue to follow the plan of the crazy terrorists even after they were exposed as crazy terrorists?), but one thing it got right was how fast society would break down. They had gone only 20 years without any new babies so there were still plenty of young people and yet everything was falling apart.

The Affleck movie sounds a bit like "The White Plague" by Frank Herbert (the "Dune" author).

That book would actually be a great movie if it was made now. Well, the first 2/3rds of the book. The end of the book is just a bit 'meh'.

Nonapod म्हणाले...

That movies seems totally ripped off from "Y: The Last Man", except the sexes are reversed. I remember there was talk about making "Y" into a movie, but whatever.

The classic novel in this space is "The White Plague," by Frank Herbert.

The novel postulates an engineered plague that kills only women. Although it doesn't quite kill all of them.

The novel is dated, but, it remains an interesting read.

Gahrie म्हणाले...

The classic novel in this space is "The White Plague," by Frank Herbert.

John Ringo takes it one step farther in his Troy Rising series. Aliens attack the Earth and wipe out most of humanity. They use several plagues. The first kills the slow and the slovenly. One of the following ones kills almost everyone who isn't blond or blonde. The last one causes women to go into sexual heat, and increases their fertility.

HoodlumDoodlum म्हणाले...

Not even worth the effort; when one of the leads of White Chicks plays woker-than-thou it's best just to roll your eyes and move on.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Yes, Michael K, I read that one, too. Same author wrote the better known "Alas, Babylon".

Nonapod म्हणाले...

Why was it terrible?

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Also, in regard to Mister Adam, there was another novelf from sometime in the 60s or 70s, whose title eludes me at the moment, where a form of birth control has caused a cessation in the birth of males altogether, and as the males die off, the remaining males are kept as breeding stock until there is a single one left, and then he also dies. The women eventually learn to procreate without a male.

There are lots of SF stories about birth dearths for whatever reason. One of the nastiest is "The Screwfly Solution" by Raccoona Sheldon (aka James Tiptree Jr.), although the proximate end there will certainly come more with (the lack of) a bang than a whimper.

See also Philip Jose Farmer's "Seventy Years of Decpop" which is more optimistic (and, I think, invents the e-book).

What makes you think those were all Roddenberry's doing, rather than that of the writers who wrote for the show?

I saw the movie “A boy and his Dog” with the then-unknown Don Johnson at a drive-in theater sometime in the early 70s. It was just creepy and the weirdest movie I’d ever seen till I saw Eraserhead in college.

USAF and Navy flight surgeons had plenty of heart rate monitors and thermocouples up the wazoo before the date of OST. They used 32 track tape recorder telemetry. Wireless computer linked hand held instrumentation was a novelty though, the tricorder. Kirk did not have google maps to take him thru the tunnels of the silicon life form.

There was a episode of Sliders that was the reverse of this back in the mid 1990's. They slid into an alternate reality where the Iraqi's had set off a biological weapon in the US that killed only men. Somehow, it spread wold wide and killed of almost all men on the planet. Australia was the only place that escaped.

So, now, men were a protected natural resource and the male sliders ended up in a heavily guarded Federal facility waiting. The government was running a lottery among women of child bearing age, the prize being a night with one of the few remaining men.

Don't remember how it ended, but it's too bad someone doesn't re-run that just so we could watch certain heads explode.
