Slate's Trump-of-July headline is not a complete left-wing nightmare.

"Donald Trump’s 'Salute to America' Was Not a Complete Authoritarian Nightmare."

That's the headline. From the text:
Credit where it’s due: The president did not go full authoritarian on the National Mall today.

At his “Salute to America” event, Donald Trump did not reference his reelection campaign; condemn undocumented immigrants; describe journalists as enemies of the people; or attack Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, or Bette Midler while standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial flanked by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and some of the world’s deadliest military hardware. Yes, this is a low standard, but the president has not always shown the same level of restraint in military settings.

Except for a few brief mentions of border security and the defeat of ISIS, there was almost no discussion of current events, debates, or controversies.... [I]n truth, the speech itself was fairly innocuous as Trump speeches go....

Trump closed his speech on a note of unity, describing Americans as “one people chasing one dream and one magnificent destiny.” But the event, which will likely be viewed by half the country as a patriotic tribute to men and women in uniform, and the other half as a corrupt, quasi-fascistic boondoggle, only highlighted yet again that as a people, we are anything but one.
Well, you guys backed off from calling it "a corrupt, quasi-fascistic boondoggle." Why do you assume that the rest of us are so set in our ways?

I know, they didn't call it "a corrupt, quasi-fascistic boondoggle," but they got those words in there. They did that by attributing the thought to other people — the other people being HALF the people in the country.

It's delusional to think that 100% of the people in the country pay attention to politics and have a specific, set viewpoint. I'd bet most Americans, when forced to think about political matters at all on July 4th, are amenable to the notion of coming together and feeling reasonably good about who we are as a nation. But Slate ends with the idea that we're just split down the middle, and the best Trump could do is just not make it any worse — that is, he was "fairly innocuous."

Birkel म्हणाले...

Full of Soup:
I can take a whack at the Leftist Collectivist position.

All they crave is power over others. Trump got in the way of their authority over others. Therefore, Trump has power, er... authority, over the Leftist Collectivists. Therefore, Trump must be using that power in the same way the Left would. Therefore, Trump is an authoritarian.

I think that's how projection and circular (or geometric) logic works.

The reasonable, thought out approach to celebrating the Fourth of July is by burning the American flag. That's how true Americans celebrate their rights and freedoms. Defacing Civil War monuments is well and good, but burning the flag is the traditional, time honored way of demonstrating your love for this country.....Come July 2020, perhaps we can have a festive gala on the Mall. Before the burning of the flag ceremony, various celebs like Jane Fonda and Chelsea Manning can read patriotic passages from Howard Fast and Naom Chomsky, then Kaepernick can run up the steps of steps of the Lincoln Monument with a torch held aloft and set fire to the flag. I;m sure there won't be a dry eye in the country. It's moments like that that bring us together as a country.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Trump's a showman so likes shows. People who never watched Trump aren't particularly interested in shows, without being against Trump at all. Just the show leaves them baffled. What the fuck was that all about.

Jaq म्हणाले...

The “quasi fascist” thing is also pretty rich. Hillary invades North Africa “We came! We saw! He died! (Chortle, guffaw)” and then runs for president on a slogan “Stronger together” that Mussolini himself would have approved. Sticks won’t break in a bundle, right Hillary?

Therefore, the way to get rid of Trump is to elect a socialist. No, that’s the way to reelect Trump.

iowan2 म्हणाले...

President Trump must have given a fantastic, pitch perfect speech. The Today Show could not find, even 10 seconds, of an entire speech that they could twist into proof, "orange man bad".

Short version of the 4th in DC? Standard celebration of National pride. Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing like the media has been hyperventilating about for a week.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

The way to celebrate America is celebrate the constitution, namely its promise; and disparage failures to live up to them as momentary. It's the promise that needs to be maintained.

Which the left wants to undermine, and the right overlooks by celebrating what doesn't matter instead.

Tom Hanks got it right in Bridge of Spies (2015) (though the actor Hanks never learned from his lines)

You're Agent Hoffman, yeah?
Yeah.

Yeah, so?
My name's Donovan. Irish. Both sides, mother and father. I'm Irish, you're German. But what makes us both Americans? Just one thing. One, one, one. The rule book. We call it the Constitution... and we agree to the rules, and that's what makes us Americans. It's all that makes us Americans so don't tell me there's no rule book... and don't nod at me like that, you son of a bitch.
Do we need to worry about you?
Not if I'm left alone to do my job.

-nothing about military might and everything celebrated by the right.

Also why muslims won't become citizens. They don't agree to the rules.

The Left-wing Nightmare responded with a magnificent example of condescending double-talk:

Sir, I don’t think that racism is going to help us get out of this mess … The fact that a black person is 4 times as likely as a white person to be incarcerated for the exact same crime is evidence of systemic racism. It is evidence of systemic racism and with all due respect, Sir, racism makes it harder for good police officers to do their jobs. It is a SMEAR on law enforcement.”

Pitifully few. About 1/10th of 1 per cent tune into CNN on a given day. About the same number subscribe to the NYT. Most people ignore and disdain politics. That’s what the numbers show.

Howard prefers the Chicago Way

or maybe the Flint Way.

For the second time, the city of Flint, Michigan, is poised to reject the results of its contract bidding process after an experienced local firm provided the lowest offer.

“This is unethical, it is bid rigging, and I certainly won’t be a part of this,” city Councilwoman Eva Worthing said during a Tuesday meeting. “Does council and the city want to deal with a lawsuit over unfair bidding practices by this city? This is favoritism, cronyism … This is basically a sham, it’s unethical, and if council votes [to rescind this contract we signed], we’re in trouble.”

Residents may have to wait six months longer for repairs because WT Stevens — the company owned by the wife of a former NBA player and which Worthing suspects may have a corrupt relationship with Flint politicos — is still months behind schedule on finishing the last water contract the city gave it, the low-bidding company, Goyette Mechanical, said.

“The mayor wants us to take away Goyette’s bid and just give it to WT Stevens,” Worthing said during the meeting.

On Monday, Mayor Karen Weaver’s administration abruptly said it would rescind the $12 million contract from Goyette Mechanical, a local firm with 90 years of experience that specializes specifically in municipal water. On Tuesday, it asked the city council to approve the move, but uproar from multiple factions of the city council led to discussions being tabled until July 8.

Of course, you could call it "The Democrat Way."

Because, you kn0w, if there's one thing "liberals" and other State-fellators hate, it's authoritarianism!

Night Owl म्हणाले...

Anyone who was surprised by Trump's Fourth of July celebration is so far out of touch with reality that their opinions should not be taken seriously. Unlike the hysterics in the media I wasn't surprised by Trump's speech.

Parades, patriotic speeches, tanks, fly-bys -- this is all fairly standard Fourth of July stuff. What exactly did the lunatics think Trump would do? I can't put myself in their mindset because I haven't been driven insane by irrational hatred of the man.

Night Owl म्हणाले...

Leftists imagine Trump as some sort of monster. I guess they envisioned Trump's 4th of July celebration in DC would be like Godzilla trampling Tokyo.

Those of us view Trump as an ordinary man with extraordinary skills as an entertainer and communicator got the 4th of July we expected.

Fen,

"Those blue cities are precarious and will fall overnight. Food riots will burn them to the ground inside of 2 weeks."

And that's only if no one targets their water supplies.

Kirk Parker म्हणाले...

A quick perusal of The Interwebz shows that NYC does basically have a Just-In-Time water supply. Details omitted, of course! But their vulnerability is indeed as expected.

Howard म्हणाले...

The inverse Atlas Shrugged fantasy pipe dream scenario of you impotent cucks is quite cute. In Rands great tome, it's the elites with all the great innovation and intellect who go on strike. In your pathetic version, it's the great unwashed blue collar heros who will go on strike. Better do it before the libtards achieve the robotic final solution. Like Fen said earlier, you guys are too pussified and comfortable to do the revolution thing.

Jim at म्हणाले...

Can one of the loony liberals here explain what Trump has done to warrant being called an authoritarian?

He won an election he wasn't supposed to win.

That's it. Full stop.

Howard म्हणाले...

Kirk: please flesh out this theory of yours without using a simpleton catchphrase.

The Cult thought he would hold an abortion rite (e.g. selective-child, social justice adventure) outside the privacy of walls and press, and expose their sordid ethics to the general public...

I know, they didn't call it "a corrupt, quasi-fascistic boondoggle,"

What exactly would a quasi-fascistic country look like? I mean, would the trains run only part of the time?

Slate scooped all other news outlets on what the "Salute to America" wasn't.

Kirk Parker म्हणाले...

Howard,

Kindly F**D. I will do no such thing. Do your own bloody wargaming.

Kirk Parker म्हणाले...

FWIW, Howard, your ignorance (or dishonesty) begins with not knowing (or pretending not to know) the difference between "theory" and "observation".

Howard म्हणाले...

In other words, Kirk can't back up his dubious claims. However, he is quite adept at spit flecking... you go gyrl

Birkel म्हणाले...

Jim at,
I disagree a bit. Trump interrupted the acquisition of power by the Leftist Collectivists. Without power the plan to force others to bend to the will of the Collectivist Left cannot be realized.

That is the only goal. Everything else is secondary. Useful idiots are stalking horses.

Ignatius Acton Chesterton OCD म्हणाले...

They’ve been talking about this kind of thing since Trump came down the escalator at Trump Tower.

I’m still waiting fir the horrors of Trump confiscating contraceptives. I don’t think that’s happened yet.

And what n.n said.

‘He’s got the whole world, IN HIS HANDS’
‘He’s got the whole world, IN HIS HANDS’
‘He’s got the whole wide world, IN HIS HANDS’
