"Biden’s nostalgia for the good old days of backslapping, and his conviction that it can be revived through interpersonal charm, is a durable Washington myth."

"But Biden’s habit of invoking his friendship with segregationists to illustrate it is particularly dense. For one thing, the example doesn’t actually support the point he’s trying to make. Biden is attempting to tout his ability to work across the aisle, but he’s citing friendships with members of his own party.... For another, by citing segregationists, he is revealing the very reason the bipartisanship he longs for can’t return. The era of bipartisanship was built on suppressing racial conflict. The white South could only be cajoled into a coalition that supported bigger government by preventing African Americans from voting and, at times, outright denying them the benefits of government altogether. He’s invoking the most unappealing aspect of the bipartisanship era. You can argue that forging American consensus was worth the cost of suppressing racial conflict, but actually highlighting the grotesque moral costs of that era is a bizarre way to advertise it.... The most favorable interpretation of Biden’s bipartisanship nostalgia is that he knows he’s peddling baloney, but he’s doing it because people like it...."

From "Joe Biden’s Segregationist Nostalgia Is Even More Ignorant Than It Sounds" by Jonathan Chait (in NY Magazine).

It's inconvenient to Democrats for Biden to remind us of their deplorable historical record. Maybe some of the younger people hadn't noticed that the Democratic Party was the one with all the segregationists.

Biden's an old man, and maybe he's too old to do the onerous job of President, but he does have the advantage of remembering a longer stretch of history. Today, he's being savaged for remembering it with some fondness. Those were the bad old days, say the people who didn't live through them, who demand that the badness be forefronted and beaten into our head continually.

We've already got Trump saying "Make America Great Again." It's weird for Biden to pick up that theme, especially when he's finding the greatness so close to actual, vicious racism. Trump never said Nazis were "very fine people." But he said something somewhere in the vicinity of that and his antagonists made sure it got remembered that way. And now here comes Biden, not saying segregationists were very fine people, but saying something close enough to that to give his antagonists a way to drive it into our head that that he did indeed say that.

Poor Biden! But you've got to be smart and wily to win the presidency, and he needs to be put to the test. He's going to fail, isn't he?

I am with Beasts of England on this one- I want to see how he handles the debates. If he can ably handle those attacks, then he does, at least, have a very good chance of winning the nomination.

My guess, though, is that he won't be able to handle it- he has never shown much capacity for thinking on his feet, or even standing firm against adversity. I base this just on his history and the fact that he is 77 years old.

Sheridan म्हणाले...

Trump's likely to do a couple of hundred (or more) re-election rallies over the next 18 months. All the while, he'll continue functioning as President. Those two efforts will consume vast amounts of personal energy. Joe will have to try and match Trump and expend his own personal energy. Does he have that in him? Or will he be videoed getting tossed into a waiting van like a sack of potatoes (like Hillary) when his energy reserves run out and he collapses. Politicians generally don't do anything other than talk. The President is different in that he can actually get something done even if it is by EO. If Joe can't match Trump with the talking and the endless rallies, he won't win IMO.

I do think that if the Democrat nominee is far to the left, then a significant number of moderate Democrats might vote for Schultz. Also, Republicans who hate Trump might vote for Schultz.

If you get a chance to watch Schultz do a long interview, I think you will find that it is time well spent.

Rural whites were shown with all their teeth intact. They were salt of the earth types. Confederate officers were gentlemen with a strong sense of honor. Hollywood treats you right if you vote Democrat.

This really surprised me growing up when i started to get into old movies.
I'd pre-assumed that hollywood was liberal and high minded and such. And yet, in civil war movies; the Confederate Officers were ALWAYS portrayed as Gallant and Noble; and the Yankees as callus and money grubbing cowards.
Then, i realized that the Confederates were Democrats; and the Damn Yankees were Republicans...
Then it started to all make sense

I thought Biden would at least make it to the debates. Oh well.

I wonder if the democrats plan is to get slow joe to inject cash into the flagging DNC coffers then discard him like a used rubber? There must still be a lot of rich liberals still pissed off over the cash they pissed away on Hillary only to walk about with zilch. They may be holding back this cycle unless they can get conned into thinking that name recognition means the presidency.

There are kids in college who think Lincoln was a Democrat.

Certainly in westerns most of the heroes or at least antiheroes were ex quantrill raiders like Eastwood's spaghetti drifter

It certainly would be a rude awakening for the young Democrats to find that their allegiance is to the party of slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow. Maybe slow Joe will do us a service after all.

@Big Mike I am glad you made that point. I have been wondering how the reparations movement would treat the descendants of those who fought and/or died on the Union side.

Of course the whole idea of reparations is a big pile of BS. The ones who should be at the top of the list are the slave traders of Africa.

“Interesting, given Warren has adopted Trumps economic message.”

You are certifiably nuts. Warren is the antiTrump.”

So Warren is going to make unemployment rise, the stock market fall, the middle class shrink and wage growth slow?
