I'm reading
"Rat-infested pop-up bar to open in San Francisco" in the San Francisco Chronicle.
The project comes from the folks behind the San Francisco Dungeon at Fisherman’s Wharf, a haunted house-like venture specializing in theatrical recreations of historical events. The pop-up is slated to run from June 13 to 15 at 145 Jefferson St. In 2017, this same group brought a similarly styled rodent spot to the city called the Black Rat Cafe.
The pop-up is a ticketed event at $49.99 per person.... After the show, patrons will have 30 minutes to spend touching and picking up the rats before heading to an upstairs cash bar...
Supplying the event’s rats will be nonprofit Ratical Rodent Rescue...
The Black Rat Cafe?! Isn't that one of my old posts? And don't tell me they had the Black Rat Café back in 2017. This new SF rat café is not the first one. I see that. But my rat cafés go back to 2016,
beginning with:
... you can talk about anything you want.
(All rats were drawn by me, in quick succession, using my fingertip in the new iPhone messaging software which lets you send drawings instead of typed words. I started drawing rats after Meade incorrectly identified some squiggle I'd sent as a rat.)

Are you sure it wasn't James Cagney that was first to become famous for rats?
Judge: "It is the opinion of the court that pretend cafes are not the same as actual ones. Case dismissed. Leave the drawings."
San Francisco is finding its level. depravity is now a feature, not a bug.
You need to charge more, that will get their attention.
When do we get the poop-themed pop-up? This is San Francisco after all.
How about a used needle pop-up cafe? (I'll avoid the used latex items...)
I see Elton John saw John Cleese and decided to join the fun: I am a European – not a stupid, imperialist English idiot. He's such a bigot.
Might take up rat sketching.
I see that, like me, you don't get into details about feet.
If these SF people were smart, they'd hire Ann to do a series of rat drawings.
And Meade, how about some rat drawings on glasses and coffee mugs? The two of you are leaving all sorts of money on the table. Aprons, magnets, stickers, glasses, mugs, shirts.
Althouse's rats will be bigger than Mickey Mouse!
I read that the man who set himself on fire in front of the White House has died from his injuries. I guess Burnie has lost a supporter.
Disney films in Croatia Ireland and Bolivia, all countries with restrictive regimes on abortion.
It's another $100 to pick up rats with fleas. Plague bearing fleas.
Cheaper than climbing Everest, and you can get there by Uber.
I was most struck by your opening line “When you’re reading the newspaper...”
Do people still do that?
A woman I know from high school had a company that made stickers for Pampered Chef. She sold it for good money.
IP is a great way to make money. Just ask The Walt Disney Company.
Elton John
I thought he was dead, so they made that movie, but I guess he's actually Canadian.
SF making productive use of it's rats. How inspiring. Maybe they can soon create pop-up diners making use of the homeless and their by-products.
Truly a lovely city.
Desert Rats are the best rats.
I do find it interesting that they are trying to turn Blue State progressive caused squalor into a virtue. Or at least a benefit. It’s kinda like turning lemons into lemonade. Maybe someone in NYC, with their rapidly escalating rat problem can retaliate by opening a bar there with piles of human excrement artfully arranged around the floor of the bar. Probably could get away with fake excrement instead. Maybe. Bunch of homeless would be useful too to add character.
Let me try again:

The bigger game:
The funny thing is that SF has much less actual squalor than at any time ever, probably. What used to be its slums have generally been redeveloped and condo-ized. Its very different from when I got here @35 years ago. Where there used to be funk there are yuppies.
When I got here you could crash in a Victorian sublet-sublet off the Panhandle for $200/mo., or less, or the equivalent in weed.
Back then you didnt have yuppies South of Market, on Grant Ave., in the Mission, Excelsior, the Fillmore, Hunters Point. These days they are renting studio apartments in the Tenderloin for $1500 at least. Back then otherwise homeless people could snag these for a fraction of their disability benefits.
Even West Oakland is different. The people getting off at West Oakland BART arent West Oakland types.
Hey, I thought that was my idea!
"You know, once I was crazy.... See that button hole? Rats used to come out of that!"
Thirty years ago there were, in places, homeless people living in abandoned buildings.
There were unoccupied, abandoned buildings, tied up in legal disputes, inheritance battles etc.
Ruins on neglected lots, unused industrial sites and so on.
That doesn’t happen anymore, land anywhere is too valuable.
Are any of those the "Begley Rat" ?
Forty years ago “Tales of the City” realistically had marginal, bohemian people living on Russian Hill.
Armistead Maupin set “Barbary Lane” there for a reason, as the point was to draw from life.
These days anything there is worth millions, and you need to be in the US top 5% to even think of renting.
Remember what I said about travel last night:

After a long day of stepping over bums, avoiding piles of human feces, and steering clear of discarded needles, what better way to relive some stress than picking up and petting a bunch of rats! Only the unsophisticated and unwashed deplorables could see anything wrong with it.
I guess gerbils are passé.
"After a long day of stepping over bums, avoiding piles of human feces, and steering clear of discarded needles"
"stepping over bums" - Or stepping past them really, they very rarely plant themselves in anyone's right of way - this is correct for about three BART stations in SF, where you can expect to see 3-10 bums on the way to a gate. On the surface there are about ten city blocks that are notably bum-ridden, besides about the same South of Market lined with tents.
This is not the case though for most of the city, or even most of downtown. and not even for where most visitors go.
As for feces and needles, never seen that even by Civic Center, the most dense bum-concentration in the City.
Its hard to express the feeling of divergence between my daily reality and such statements. They are a gross exaggeration of a real situation. How can I put it? In the worst concentration of bums in downtown SF streets during working/business hours, in a single frozen frame if you will, you will have about a 50:1 or 100:1 ratio of normal people to bums.
My own, an actual residents, impression of SF is completely different. There is a lot to dislike about SF, but these are entirely different things than the casual comment.

It was enough to cancel the American College of Surgeons meeting in October. That has been held in SF since the 70s every third year, Since there are quite a few members in SF, I assume it was in response to feedback from locals. It has been held in Moscone Center since it was built.
I might add, the College was held in New Orleans beginning the day after Hurricane Ivan missed the city by swinging east.
I did not know if it would be canceled but it was not and I flew in the day before it started. By the way, I saw zero preparation for the hurricane. The next year was Katrina.
I think the Rat Cafe is a perfect place to host one of those dinners where white women pay to have women "of color" berate them about their white supremacist guilt: See https://dailycaller.com/2019/05/29/white-women-dinners-shamed-racism/
Fourth rat from the bottom (or top!) is delightful. One exploded eye, one sightless eye, kissable yet surly lips (sucking on a straw), and six (6) legs. I'd be proud to display such a rat on multiple stickers applied to the windshield of my automobile.
An important difference: the "Ratical Rodents" are available for adoption, therefore that commercial cafe activity is woke. The Althouse rats and her rat cafes are most likely strictly for entertainment and possible economic gain, therefore not woke.
Apparently black, brown and gray house rats are not native to North America and were brought here without their consent. Justice for rats!
Excellent! You have a talent for rats!
Maybe do a three-panel cartoon with your rats. As lawyers! Making lawyer jokes to one another!
