I'm seeing this because I was starting to read "Moby's treatment of Natalie Portman is a masterclass in beta-male misogyny/While the musician might not spout misogynistic lyrics, he’s no feminist" by Arwa Mahdawi in The Guardian, where you see a cropped version of the picture (cropped above the nipples). I wanted to form my own opinion and get the code to embed the Instagram, and I clicked through and saw the full chestal expanse. Oh, my! What to think? The man is not attractive, but he's not totally horrible, but he's grimacing as if to try to look as horrible as possible, while she's just as pretty as a girl can be.
What's going on? Why doesn't she look uneasy? She's an actress — Who knows what she's thinking? Maybe she's only thinking of looking good in a photograph — which is what I think most people try to do when they know they're being photographed. What's he thinking? Something other than what I think most people think. Maybe I'm a beast — this is Beauty and the Beast — so go full beast, that's my only hope at some version of dignity.
I've already written about the Moby-and-Natalie tiff — here, with excerpts from his book — so please go there if you want to know what I think about it. This post is just about my reaction to Moby's Instagram and to The Guardian's effort at doing feminism about it. Reading the Guardian article, I see he's got a second Instagram, just fretting about his reputation now that Portman is turning people against him. He writes:
In my memoir Then It Fell Apart I respectfully and honestly describe the brief, innocent, and consensual romantic involvement I had with Natalie Portman in 1999. But she’s denying that we ever dated, even though in the past she’s publicly discussed our involvement, and there’s ample photographic evidence that we briefly dated and then were friends(some pictures included in this post). It hurts to be lied about, especially as I’ve always respected her, and I thought we were friends. But I’ve been receiving anonymous threats of violence from her fans, and it’s affecting my business and my health. So what should I do? What do you do when people believe lies and accusations and not actual photographs and evidence? I want to take the high road, but I honestly don’t know what to do. It’s one thing to be lied about, and entirely another when someone’s lies result in physical threats from complete strangers. Is that what The Guardian's feminist calls "beta-male misogyny"? It is beta male. But what's the misogyny?
Someone — a 15-year-old guy — replies to him: "In my limited experience the key is to stop caring. You do you and don’t worry about other people and how they do do." How they do do? (He must mean how they do you.) I'm making a new tag for "You do you." I'm fascinated by that phrase, and I think it's a positive helpful concept (for some people, but not everyone).
So back to The Guardian's feminist:
One might think that getting called out for sleazing on a teenager while you were in your 30s would be mortifying. One might think you’d drop the matter and let the news cycle move on. Moby, however, seems desperate for the world to believe that he dated a girl just out of high school.Well, he used her name to sell a memoir. He is using her. And she spoke up. She doesn't like it. But the book is what it is and he wants respect for it. He runs himself down in the book, but he uses her in the process. He's certainly not beyond "mortifying" himself. The book is confessional and loaded with angst about himself. The photograph above shows something of how he feels about himself and his proximity to her. His feelings are complex — good and bad. But he's not about shutting up. That's where the Guardian feminist has it wrong. He's writing. He's talking. It's a memoir, and a good memoir isn't about making yourself look good. You tell on yourself!
Here's where The Guardian's feminist makes her point about "beta-male misogyny" and it includes an idea I think is important, that leftism doesn't save you from anti-feminism:
... Moby doesn’t present as a scary predator. He looks non-threatening; he’s a vegan; he’s politically progressive; he’s called out artists like Eminem for being misogynistic. But while Moby might not spout obviously misogynistic lyrics, he’s obviously no feminist...
In his memoir Moby... frames his first interaction with Portman in a way which is designed to make her, a teenager, seem predatory. Recounting their first encounter, he writes: “I was a bald binge drinker and Natalie Portman was a beautiful movie star. But here she was in my dressing room, flirting with me. I was 33 and she was 20 but this was her world.”Note: She wasn't 20. She was 18. He gets the specific fact wrong, undermining his credibility.
Poor little man-child, you’re supposed to think. He was entrapped by a young vixen. She may have been significantly younger, but she had all the power. It was Moby who taken advantage of!This is putting words in his mouth. Moby does not say these things in his book. I think he's saying he was flattered and weak, not that she was aggressive or plotting. He goes on to angst about falling in with celebrities at glitzy parties, betraying his punk-rock belief system. I assume Portman dislikes her role in this psychodrama, but it's not much about anyone actually trying to have sex.
You know what’s really a shame? The fact that guys like Moby put more effort into seeming woke than they do listening to women. What’s really a shame is that a guy like Moby can dedicate years of his life to promoting veganism but still treats women like they’re nothing more than a piece of meat.A feminist punchline. It's not fair to Moby and tough luck for Moby for not being the kind of man feminists want to be fair to.
By the way, I see Natalie Portman, while snuggled up next to Moby's nipples and not looking squicked out, was wearing a shirt with the words "milk fed/milk fed." Isn't that portraying yourself as a piece of meat? Or is it just a way to say I'm pure and terribly wholesome (which can only be said about yourself ironically)?

What happened to the Empowered Woman? If it's creepy for a 34 year old male to hang out with an 18 year old girl, why is it not also creepy for her to hang with him?
And why was she hanging with a man old enough to be her father? Gold-digger? Fame whore? Young girl vainly flirting just to see if older men found her appealing? How come no one is talking about that angle?
Just another example of women not being held responsible for the choices they make. They are always the oppressed victim avoiding accountable for their actions.
The Guardian article is kind of like fan-fiction, but about real people.
But the Guardian article also suggest that Eminem is overdue for a memoir.
What kind of douche calls himself "Moby"?
Moby - that committed leftist/feminist - now realizes that he has no victim pokemon points - he is a "cisgendered white male" just above dog poop. All I can say is "hah hah hah hah!"
Is there such a thing as a beta female? If not why not?
Women used to simply bitch.
In my lifetime, they transformed their constant bitching into a political and social movement. 60 years of non-stop, obnoxious bitching.
We're supposed to organize to punish failed dating?
Men's bitching, by the way, is a sin called "misogyny."
masterclass in beta-male misogyny
Now it says "masterclass in nice-guy misogyny".
Maybe someone got their tropes about memes mixed up.
It's not fair to Moby and tough luck for Moby for not being the kind of man feminists want to be fair to.
Is there any type of man that feminists want to be fair to?
"I respect her intelligence and activism"
Good thing, because that's exactly why she's an activist. Virtue Points, an Indulgence for the wicked. Go out and revel in your wickedness, think no more on how your monthly cosmetic expenses could keep a Somali village from Famine, because you "care" about the Desert Tortoise. Forget about all the young girls preyed upon by Hollywood director-pervs because you didn't want to be dis-invited from the cool parties.
Is there such a thing as a beta female? If not why not?
Because all women are beta's. Twenty years after Buffy and Brie Larson still has to encourage them they can be super heroes too. How many more decades do they need to be propped up?
I dated my professor from college. Very liberal feminist (but a rare hotness). Kept up with her as a good friend after. She's happily married with 2 kids now. But it amazed me how quickly and easily she morphed into a Stepford Wife. She even cooks her husband dinner :)
Smeagol has ensorcelled a fair maiden.
To me, his look is "I can't quite believe this happening, but I'm trying not to look TOO idiotic." She's harder to read to me, but doesn't seem particularly creeped out.
OK gals and gays: chest hair?

I have a lot more than that fool
I'm seeing this because I was starting to read "Moby's treatment of Natalie Portman is a masterclass in beta-male misogyny .....
Beta-male misogyny!
Heh-Heh!
Made my morning!
Just say no to Beta-males.
Just another example of women not being held responsible for the choices they make
someone here should come up with a "rule" for that, like...
"no woman should ever be made to feel bad or responsible...ever"
make sure you get the 'ever' in there
The guardian tries to be all woke and throws the “misogyny” label at Moby, but the exact same article (same sentence?) refers to Moby as a “beta male”. Isn’t that the height of “misandry”? This “beta-make is a misogynist”.... ugh GMAFB.
VHS males beat out the beta males
I take it that even Guardian feminists view Alpha male mysogyny as kind of a turn on.
Why doesn't she look uneasy?
Her face looks a little uncomfortable to me, but it's subtle. Pictures are hard to read, so who knows.
We do know that Moby was unaware that Harvard has a separate Freshman dorm and eating facilities. Portman lived in the Frosh dorm. If he knew her quite well, and was seriously dating her, seems like he would have had a clue about her living and dining arrangements.
Anyways, he's a kiss-and-tell bragging sort of dude, which tells one a lot about a man. That he published details about multiple women is revealing in itself.
Portman is a brilliant person who accepts all men provided they too have a brain. So she can handle Moby with ease, like Judy garland handled Mickey Rooney.
Reeeee! All over the world, men and women are f*cking.
Portman has a surprising number of roles before Phantom Menace.
Oh God here we go again. Is it the left-wing thing to CONSTANTLY misrepresent what's going to on? Portman was NOT a "teenager" - she was a fucking ADULT. And she didn't need to be "protected". Or is that the new feminism?
She went after Moby. She went to HIS dressing room. She invited HIM to her dorm room She was the young beauty that held all the cards in that relationship. No doubt she's the one that broke off the relationship.
And what's up with MOBY? He's not married, no kids, no girl-friend - despite being a rich rock'n'roller. Is he GAY or not? And even if he was straight, he looks as threatening as pajama boy.
As for Portman being "Beautiful". Its not hard to look good when you're 18. I see girls prettier than that, everyday at the Grocery Store or at my daughters social functions.
"What kind of douche calls himself "Moby"?"
From the memoir: "A recurring question from journalists was about Herman Melville being an ancestor of mine. I’d spent so much time talking about Moby-Dick that I felt like a scholar, even though I’d never actually finished the book. I’d decided that the novel was an allegory wherein Moby Dick (the whale) represented the vast and unknowable forces of the universe, while Captain Ahab represented fearful, petty humans, trying to conquer that which was unconquerable, and being destroyed in the process. I would invariably finish my Moby-Dick answer by glibly saying, “Of course, I’d much rather be named after the vast and unknowable forces of nature than Captain Ahab.” I never admitted that the only foundation for my hermeneutics was heredity. And now I’d found rock stardom, my own domesticated pet white whale. But my little whale wasn’t destroying me; instead, it smiled at me while I rode happily on its back, more like a friendly pony than a malevolent force of nature. I decided that it was my karma to have a benign relationship with fame, my own Moby Dick, and not end up lashed to the whale with harpoons and knotted rope."
Moby. Then It Fell Apart . Faber & Faber. Kindle Edition.
A decent 33 year old man would not date an 18 year old.
That said, there’s nothing misogynistic about what he has done or said. I think it’s funny that Portman is denying she dated the guy. Maybe she didn’t consider it dating or romantic. Maybe there was nothing physical about it. Or maybe they went Dutch on dinner or lunch. In which case, it’s not a date to her.
The Guardian writer is saying if someone is not a feminist (whatever her definition is of that term) then he is a misogynist.
The Woke are coming for Moby.
That’s how they do.
From my previous comment yesterday,
"Never pay attention to what a woman says. Only pay attention to what a woman does."
Michael K mentioned yesterday that I couldn't place Portman because she didn't show up in any good movies. So I looked it up, and he was right. She's basically gets generic "Good looking girl" parts in action movies or whatever.
A better origin story is he took the name Moby because Moby Dick was his favorite Led Zeppelin song.
"What kind of douche calls himself 'Moby'?"
Someone who is related to Herman Melville and who was nicknamed "Moby" by his parents when he was a child.
"A decent 33 year old man would not date an 18 year old."
Bullshit. 45 Y/o Bogart Married 18 y/o Bacall. Want me to list all the men over 30 who dated and/or married 18-19 y/o WOMEN?
Is there any type of man that feminists want to be fair to?
there's the alpha-male misogyny, today's beta-male misogyny, yesterday's incel misogyny, so what's next in line?
Gay-male misogyny, then transsexual-male misogyny....
"The only good male is a dead male"-- you wont be truly woke until you're dead
So, what's the deal about girls and bad boys?
It was creepy that Bogart married Bacall. Decent men don’t take advantage of young women. Bogart was married four times. He would have been married 7 times if he lived as long as Kirk Douglas.
Start listing all your heroes who married young women. Not decent guys.
Again, lets just raise the Adulthood age to 20 for Women. They obviously can't handle adulthood at 18 or 19. Above all, don't let them vote.
Sen Richard Blumenthal
Roy Moore
Bill Clinton
Not decent men
I spent two years as an adjunct prof at a major state university (not Ann's). In my mid 30s and still had some boyish good looks. Every semester there'd be at least one young woman throwing herself at me. Generally, these were super-achieving students from broken homes who lacked a father figure growing up. In their awkward kind of way, they made it amply clear that it wouldn't take much for me to have them.
In the faculty orientation we were warned about this. I scoffed.....but they were right.
Do we know he knew she wasn’t 20? Maybe she lied about her age? I recall a few young attractive women uninterested in males their own age and totally interested in exploring relationships with disturbingly older men and lying about their age.
From that picture, it's clear that Moby has not been wasting his time in any type of gym or on the athletic field.
Just sayin'.
Beta Males of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but your Dad-bods.
Maybe Natalie didn’t consider it a “date-date”.
And this “I decided that it was my karma to have a benign relationship with fame, my own Moby Dick, and not end up lashed to the whale with harpoons and knotted rope”.
Why do some people make their lives so complicated and dramatic? Really?
#LeaveMeOut If you want to #meToo about actual abuse, go ahead, I support you. If you want to talk about celebrities' quarreling about their relationships, leave me out.
Roy Moore didn't do anything. His accusers were flakes, liars, and Democrat hacks. But they smeared his reputation over 35 y/o accusations and he lost. So, mission accomplished. Thanks Senator Shelby and Cocaine Mitch. And its because of that smear, we had to go through that insane kavanaugh hearing while Susan collins played Hamlet.

This post is just about my reaction to Moby's Instagram and to The Guardian's effort at doing feminism about it.
A persons reaction to any social media morsel is more about them, than the post. The Social media posts are a long distance photo, with a cheap camera, low light, out of focus, of a moving target. From that very small sliver if time, and subject matter of ambiguous nature, a viewer feels what they want to feel. This is not rational, thoughtful deliberative analysis.
With that disclaimer, some person using it to degrade others while pushing a PC meme, leaves me cold.
18 Y/o is an adult. If it isn't lets raise the age for women. None of this "Well they're adults, but they are little girls too".
Moby might be a beta male, but those outraged Natalie Portman fans who are sending him death threats are truly plumbing the depths of beta maledom.
I thought Natalie Portman was a 50s era actress. Oh well. She's certainly generic in the pic. I never heard of Moby but he's one of a kind in the pic.
then there's always Gary Puckett

Poor Natalie! Obviously a victim with no agency or accountability for her choices.
You should make a “stop whining ladies” tag, and apply it to this post and many others.
It’s not a good look.
Don't we all have love affairs that are cringeworthy in hindsight? Natalie should have left it at that. All this navel gazing about exactly how old she was, feminist this, misogynist that, what a bunch of bs. Older men have gone for younger women since time immemorial. I know feminists want us to buy the laughable trope that the mysterious laws of attraction between the sexes is just a socialized construct of the evillllll patriarchy. Yes, Bogey and Bacall. Elvis and Priscilla. Charlie and Oona. Frank and Mia. Woody and...every woman he ever dated except Diane. It's natural. It's normal. It's cuz what men and women find attractive about one has its roots in perpetuating the species. Ample breasts, youth, a lean frame, clear skin and eyes -- these "standards" of beauty are universal because they connote good genes and motherhood material. As for young women's frequent choice of older men, a strong provider/protector would also seem to be part of our genetic makeup. Just keep reminding yourselves that sex is, after all, about propagating the species, and maybe our culture will return to some semblance of sanity. My definition of sanity being, living according to created reality-- not abstruse academic theory.
Natalie, I don't hold Moby against you. It's a youthful indiscretion. But don't be making up stuff and getting all hashtagMETOO about it, either.
That picture looks like a nervous dweeb fan getting a selfie with a pretty movie star.
This is Ms. Althouse at her best.
As for Moby, I just got this to say.
All the excerpts of this pretentious mediocrity's memoir seem to reveal is that he's an even bigger douche than was already obvious.

Nope, no hand hover. Also he needs a good orthodonist.
Beta-male misogyny! Heh-Heh! Made my morning!
Yup, there's that counter-intuitive Patriarchy Theory again.
"Women are so inferior, even the 3rd stringers on the male bench can oppress them"
It all makes sense though, once you realize the goal of feminism is no longer about raising women up, it's about pigeonholing them as a perpetual victim class dependent on the Left to speak for them.
"I thought Natalie Portman was a 50s era actress."
No, the 50s Agents/Studios would never have allowed that kind of name for an American actress. Too long. They usually required easily remembered names like Natalie Wood.
> Moby but he's one of a kind in the pic.
Reminds me of Wallace in the Wallace and Gromit movies.
Wallace and Gromit.
Bad decision to kiss & tell in the first place. If it was a brief & insignificant thing to begin with, he could have just said he briefly dated an actress a dozen or so years younger than he was.
I don't like Portman. But, I don't think she dated him. My guess: they were acquaintances, briefly. Of the freshman type where you meet someone and have a intense dorm-room conversation about random subjects like vegetarianism. He wasn't a good enough friend for him to know she was a freshman living in a all-freshman dorm with it's own culture specific to Harvard. She never considered herself to be dating him. Probably never considered him a real friend. He was a social acquaintance. Now he's trying to trade on that slight acquaintance.
Maybe they kissed. Or, more likely, he kissed her and she was not into him. That's why she told him he was in the friend-zone.
In any case, we know Moby wrote details about his encounters with many women--so he's a douche for that.
Do I think 33 or 34 year olds should date 18 year olds, who turned 18 a few week prior? Do you want a 33 year old man, a heavy drinker, and a bald musician, to date your freshman daughter? Do you want him trying to kiss her? Do you want him hanging out in her freshman dorm? Not many North American fathers would be thrilled to see a 33 year old man hanging around their college-bound 17 year old, plus a few weeks, daughter.
We thought this pic was hilarious. "I was not some creepy, older guy, see?" Talk about tone deaf.
And yes, people in their mid-thirties dating 18-year-olds are being weird.
45 Y/o Bogart Married 18 y/o Bacall. Want me to list all the men over 30 who dated and/or married 18-19 y/o WOMEN?
Bogart died like 10 years later, leaving a child. It's not a great idea to marry a father who isn't going to be there for the kid to reach adulthood. & it's not great to loose your Dad at 18, either. Marry somebody who has a better chance of sticking around to be a grandfather.
People keep saying "18-year-old girl" as though we are talking about an 18-year-old girl.
We're not, we're talking about 18-year-old Natalie Portman, who had already been a star for years. We all know she'd already been hit on by dozens of older men--producers, directors, casting agents, etc., had 100's of dick pics sent to her and was pressured by Harvey Weinstein. There is no reason to suspect there was a sophistication difference.
I despise Moby's politics, but this episode makes him seem endearing to me. I can't bear ill will towards someone so wracked with self-loathing.
"Not many North American fathers would be thrilled to see a 33 year old man hanging around their college-bound 17 year old, plus a few weeks, daughter."
Exactly. Which is why so many young women do that.
"But she’s denying that we ever dated, even though in the past she’s publicly discussed our involvement,"
--
Wonder what she said
I wonder more about that odd "milk fed. milk fed" shirt.
It reminds me of odd English phrases on clothing in Asia.
wwwww at 1205: I don't have a daughter, but no, I wouldn't want her hanging out with a bald musician either . . .
But what does that sort of paternalistic paternalism (new tag?) have to do with anything?
The "would Daddy be thrilled?" trope is as tired and lazy as "I think old guys who hang out with younger girls are ICKY." They were adults under the law.
The dorm rules and what he shoulda/coulda known about them are just about as orthogonal to the issues (such as they are) IMHO.
Narr
So, he's bald, but what about the skimpy manmat?
There is no doubt Moby is using the previous relationship to sell his book. So the simple part is she doesn't want her name and likeness used for his financial gain. That's something celebrities often complain for which us non-celebrities can hardly relate.
The relationship definitely fails the "1/2 your age + 7" test in age differences, so creepy it is. And as noted but another, I don't think a 33 year old bragging about dating 18 year old makes for a decent person. Dating as a concept was different to me at age 18 than when I was 33. At 18, it meant going places together and maybe some kissing. At 33, telling someone "I dated her" was a polite way of saying I've seen her naked. I guess in this case, Portman probably did see Moby naked, because he's already half way there in the picture.
I will agree with the author that Moby should have just let it go, but that also goes for Portman. I think the Streisand effect may start kicking in.
I asked "What kind of douche calls himself "Moby"?"
The question actually answers itself. But thanks for the background! Now I just need to find out what he's famous for.
There is no doubt Moby is using the previous relationship to sell his book.
I have plenty of doubt. I, for one, never even heard of the guy except for Portman disputing that they “dated.” My take is that she should have kept her yap shut and ceased her whining.
For all her awards and nominations for awards, for me she will always be the actress who couldn’t out-act a 2 x 4 as Padme Amidala in “Star Wars: Episode 1” and “Star Wars: Episode 2.”
I agree with Yancey at 11:49. This is our hostess at her best.
I think that there is a certain quality of woman-bashing in his determination to out Portman as a former date. Putting aside the unchivalrous aspect of talking publicly about a lady acquaintance, he deftly conceals his real motive by conceding that she might have justifiable regrets about having dated him, and yet his purpose is to rub it in. It’s a little rapey if you ask me.

"Poor Natalie! Obviously a victim with no agency or accountability for her choices.
"You should make a 'stop whining ladies' tag, and apply it to this post and many others.
"It’s not a good look."
Why do you assume she's lying? Why not assume Moby is lying? Or, why not assume that each had a drastically different perception of the nature of their acquaintanceship?
"For all her awards and nominations for awards, for me she will always be the actress who couldn’t out-act a 2 x 4 as Padme Amidala in 'Star Wars: Episode 1' and 'Star Wars: Episode 2.'”
To be fair, it's hard to act well in shit like Star Wars.
"But here she was in my dressing room, flirting with me."
Because, obviously, she was into hot beta males.
Why did she go back to his dressing room? And how many 18 year girls ask celebs to meet up with them next time they are in NYC?
These are not typical people.
I think we are being trolled for publicity. Portman's tweet and Moby's response read like two people who are no longer on speaking terms.
Do you really think that when Portman heard about showing up in his book, she didn't ring up her old friend and say "wtf?". Or that after Moby read Portman's tweet, he didn't reach out to his friend and smoothe the waters?
I find it more likely their cell records will reveal multiple calls back and forth, and the substance of those calls was how to get MoPort to go viral.
At least we know what is in Mobys spank bank.
Portman: "milk fed/milk fed"
Moby has nipples. Can you milk him?
Big Mike said...I, for one, never even heard of the guy except for Portman disputing that they “dated.”
I assume you have heard of the phenomenon of a liberal (the Moby) visiting a conservative outlet posing as a conservative in order to make conservatives look bad or to sow havoc (basically, a false flag operation). This Moby inspired that term by encouraging the activity. He is poison to civil society.
Yuck.
1 in 4 women will be dated while in college.
With social media everyone's divorce or bad date can be public
Nobody can win a publicity fight with a hot woman
Moby comes across as kind of sheepish.

From Natalie Portman's Stark Reality: A Biography, p. 162, published in 2012:
After she left Austin, she stayed in frequent contact with [Moby], exchanging five-page letters with him every day for three weeks. After that, they mostly communicated by email.
Shortly before returning to Harvard in the fall of 2000, Natalie did an interview with Marie Claire magazine during which she was told that Moby had claimed a romantic relationship with her.
"He did? No, he didn't!" Natalie insisted. "We're going to have a talk then, because that's not true. Not at all...I love Moby but it's more intense than a romance. It's a really good friendship. A soul connection."

ooooh good one, Henry! Or in his case, "ewww do ewww!"
On the plus side, he's not a rapper. I think it's a contradiction in terms to describe a rock star as a beta male. It's just as hard to be beta when you're rich and famous as it is to be alpha when you have a minimum wage job on the night shift....She should embrace her past relationship with Moby. He's not especially good looking, but he's got a quirky mind and apparently had a few hit records. Dating Moby adds texture and layers to her Hollywood persona.......She was not eighteen in Hollywood years. She probably already had her first face lift.
To be fair, it's hard to act well in shit like Star Wars.
Oh come on! The script was terrible, but that’s no excuse for how thoroughly bad she was. A high school student in the senior class play could have out acted her by miles.
Why do you assume she's lying?
