One of my sisters, a CA liberal, though not of the extreme Sanders/AOC variety, has been visiting the last few days. We've been traveling around meeting with our older relatives doing some genealogical research. Note, please, that when I say 'we' I mean my sister has been doing the data gathering, I've been mostly chauffeuring around New England.

During our travels today, up to Maine to my son, her nephew, and his family, we got to talking. She's very much into thinking about various social issues; the homeless problem on the West coast, BLM, abortion, etc. Apparently she's read some book recently that discusses the trouble "we", the people of the United States, are having solving these intractable problems. The book's author posits that there's just too much disagreement as to the nature of the problems and no agreement on the solutions, no real common ground on which to build a broad coalition.

I said that one of the biggest and strongest barriers is that "we" are trying to solve local issues at a national level. I asked how she proposes to fix a homelessness problem in Seattle, San Francisco, or LA by somehow getting 320 million people in 50 States, across a land mass of 3,796,742 sq mi to agree on anything. Having heard it put this way for the first time she didn't have a response. It is a puzzle that good-hearted people haven't considered.

In any case, was still a great visit. One little tidbit we learned is that we are related, through our mother's side, back to one of the "first comers" to the area. A relation came here from England in 1635. Most interesting to me was thinking about what drove him to come to this then desolate place, putting himself at risk. Work and land and opportunity seem to be the best answer.

Glorious weather today. Crab apples still in bloom. I love this time of year.

No wonder Justin Amash’s been attacking Trump’s Tariffs!

Why would Amash care about Trump's inflationary tariffs - since he controls product cost and selling price to himself? Amash imports at whatever price he chooses, at at loss I'd expect, pays the stupid tariff on the reduced price but sells to consumers at full cost plus full markup plus Trumps added tariff percentage. American customers get screwed and American manufacturers are paying far too much labor and overhead to compete.

Omar Khayyam — born only a few decades less than a thousand years ago (he lived circa 1050-1123) — a poet of grace via his famous, lovely Rubaiyat — but also, unbeknown by most, a formidable mathematician, making notable advances in algebra and geometry (the solving of cubic equations in particular).

For instance, here's an intriguing mathematical insight (especially for that era!) that Omar Khayyam expressed in his Algebra: [quoting…]

Whoever thinks algebra is a trick in obtaining unknowns has thought it in vain. No attention should be paid to the fact that algebra and geometry are different in appearance. Algebras are geometric facts which are proved.

[/unQuote]

Despite such brilliance, however, Khayyam poetically deprecated his jewelry box (or Scrooge-McDuck vault) of self-evoked mathematical treasures in his Rubaiyat (FitzGerald Edition), as he wrote: [quoting…]

Ah, but my Computations, People say,
Have squared the Year to human Compass, eh?
If so, by striking from the Calendar
Unborn To-morrow, and dead Yesterday.

[/unQuote]

Omar Khayyam's mathematics struck “Unborn To-morrow, and dead Yesterday” from the Calendar… basically because he lacked Calculus, invented in the late 17th century — leaving prior mathematics stuck pretty much in a timeless stasis (from a describing-physical-reality point of view).

I'd expect, pays the stupid tariff on the reduced price but sells to consumers at full cost plus full markup plus Trumps added tariff percentage.

One of lifes simple pleasure is watching leftist learn something, then realize they have to immediately forget what they learn, because it ruins the narrative.

We learned, when President Trump raised tariffs for Chinese produced products, tariffs are a tax on the consumer of the product. The company does not pay it, the consumer does. That tax on the consumer disproportionately fall on the poor and middle class.
Let us repeat that. A tax on the manufacturer is paid by the consumer. Again, raise income taxes on corporations, and the consumer pays that tax. The poor and middle class disproportionately get hurt by raising taxes. Sen Warren's plan to increase income taxes on corporations hurt the poor and middle class, not corporations.

two things:
1) very (VERY) few people have Any idea what something like y` + P(x)y = Q(x)y^n means
2) Only the simplest differential equations are solvable

If a closed-form expression for the solution is not available, the solution may be numerically approximated using computers. The theory of dynamical systems puts emphasis on qualitative analysis of systems described by differential equations, while many numerical methods have been developed to determine solutions with a given degree of accuracy.

Mr. Trump is using the issue to rouse his base, including the crucial voting bloc of Christian conservatives for whom abortion is an overarching issue. His false statements that Democrats would “execute” newborn babies — which he has repeated on his Twitter feed, during his State of the Union address and at campaign rallies, sometimes as he mimics swaddling a baby — are being picked up and repeated by conservatives all over the country.”
