Nixonian!

I keep hearing that word...

I hear: Ask not whether there was — technically, legalistically — a crime. Ask whether it feels like Nixon.

I came of age in the Nixon era. I watched essentially every minute of the Watergate hearings on live TV. I laughed aloud in glee when Nixon resigned, because he was guilty as charged.

Since then, there have been false charges that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't work, and there have been true charges that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't work, to remove opponents from office.

The use of such charges against the opposition rather than gaining support for one's own ideals, policies, and politicians has increased in frequency and sophistication since Nixon. I don't think this practice will lead to the benefit of the populace nor improve the nation itself. That said, I hope Barr prosecutes Hillary, just for the schadenfreudilicious landslide it would produce in 2020.

Milo Minderbinder म्हणाले...

Members of Congress and the Administration surely have wished and perhaps expressed over the past two years a desire to murder one or two across the aisle. Yet, there's no body and no blood. Lacking same, there's no crime (forgive me, Father, for I am guilty of impure thoughts).

Impeach away, all you silly fools in Congress. With Nixon, there was overwhelming public sentiment against that man, enough to insulate any member of Congress from an electoral challenge. The basis for the Watergate investigation wasn't suspect. The democrats scored a substantial victory in the 1974 mid-terms. It's different this time.

Trump is the opposite of Nixon. Nixon wanted to turn the IRS, FBI, and CIA into weapons to be used against his enemies, but the agencies had too much integrity to do so. Trump’s predecessor in office succeeded in turning the FBI and CIA into weapons that were employed against Trump, except Trump won and they failed. For the good of this country and for the second time in the history of the US we need to put a reformer in charge of he FBI and clean up that bureau from top to bottom. Ditto the CIA, except no one has held them to account before. Trump also needs to replace every FISA judge with people possessing integrity. The IRS needs to be brought to heel. It’s gonna be a lot of work and the media will raise Hell, but it has to be done for the good of the country.

I admired Nixon.
I have a little portait of his on my desk, in a black frame, which I aquired when he died.

He was one of those early victims of the corporatist-bureaucratic system, trapped by a disingenuous application of double-standards and an early form of the media machine.

Back then though the American people were much more naive.

Lloyd W. Robertson म्हणाले...

Defenders of Nixon's foreign policy have said that foreign leaders, including those in China, had no idea why Nixon was forced to resign. What exactly did he do wrong? He covered up a burglary that was in itself fairly low-grade partisan politics. The hacking of its day. Because he (presumably) suborned perjury and bribed witnesses, Nixon faced the possibility of obstruction of justice charges--the way anyone, whether holding elective office or not, might be charged. That's why Ford pardoned him. Dershowitz's point that a president can't be prosecuted for obstruction for performing acts that are within his constitutional authority is still correct. Nixon had the right to fire special prosecutors and Attorneys General. I always opposed the impeachment of Clinton, which must have been even more of a mystery to foreign leaders. Isn't the U.S. the land of sexual freedom? There was plenty of rage in both the earlier cases, but the anti-Trump rage has always seemed special to me. He doesn't so much articulate opposition to progressive policies (or the policies of "smart" people in foreign policy and economics) as he acts like he has barely heard of them, and assumes that sane people can ignore them. He sometimes rants that he might do something Nixonian, but he never does so.

dbp म्हणाले...

I've been occasionally listening to NPR and it is like they are living in bizzaro-world.

They have seriously posited that when Trump publicly hoped that the Russians hacked the Clinton server and would publish the emails Hillary illegally deleted, that was collusion. How is that collusion? It is not as if he said that if they did that, he would be more flexible with them or anything.

They seriously claimed that Trump is not exonerated by the report. In what world does a prosecutor exonerate anyone? They charge you if they think they have a chance at conviction and unless you have been found guilty, you are presumed innocent. I didn't attend the Columbia School of Journalism, but I did learn about innocent until proven guilty in elementary school.

Nonapod म्हणाले...

I was born in 1974 so I have no strong feelings about Nixon one way or the other. I know all the relevant facts about his presidency and Watergate, but it's all more of an acedemic thing for me. That's the way humans work, we tend to only develop strong feelings for things that effect and have effected us, for moments in history that we've actually lived through. I expect that people who were born around or after 911 aren't going to have strong feelings about that either.

Darkisland म्हणाले...

I wonder if Mueller had a journalist writing the report? Some of it reads like bullshit gossip. For example, the part about how he said

"Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my Presidency. I' m fucked."

This is what Mueller quoted and this is what was widely reported.

It is not the complete quote, though. What President Trump also said was

"Everyone tells me if you get one of these independent counsels it ruins your presidency. It takes years and years and I won' t be able to do anything. This is the worst thing that ever happened to me.

Mueller, in his writing, puts a lot of verbiage between the two parts of the quote. Most people miss the second part.

I think PDJTs fears were correct. If he were a lesser man, this kind of investigation, regardless of the underlying truth or, in this case falseness, would completely hobble his presidency.

Fortunately PDJT is Donald freaking Trump and has managed to get one Hell of a lot done in spite of the hobbles.

Economy
Killing Obamacare (in progress)
North Korea ( 2 steps forward 1 back)
Trade
World peace
Middle East peace (dare we hope?)
Lots and lots of federal judges
Immigration (progress after 40 years or so)
and so on.

He did this all with the hobbles of the Mueller investigation, a hostile lying press, hostility from the Dems (to be expected) and hostility from his own party (WTF?)

Just think what he could have accomplished had he been unbound.

That reminds me of something that occurred to me the other day. I may have seen it somewhere but, if I did, do not remember.

You folks in most of the upper 50 have serious problems with elections. Registration of illegals, ballot harvesting, no ID at the polls, people registered in multiple places, early and absentee voting, electronic voting machines and a host of other fraud, apparent fraud and opportunities for fraud.

(Not our secure elections down here)

President Trump, in 2017, initiated a commission to look into state voting practices. Lots of hooraw about it and the commission was "disbanded". Disbanded in the sense that it was renamed and went underground. It is still beavering away.

President Trump has mentioned several times that we need to take steps to assure that Russians or anyone will never be able interfere in our elections again. Will the silver lining of the Mueller report be a push (excuse?) to establish trustworthy elections in the US?

One can hope.

My guess is that we will have to wait for Trump to win reelection in 2020 before the true effort to hold these swamp-dwellers and corrupt elites (but I repeat myself) accountable.

After DJT wins reelection, he won't have to worry about the MSM or the Congress. He can just go in there with Draino® and a power washer and fully expose these b_st_rds and disclose what what they did. He won't care about the MSM, and Fox (presumably) and social media (surely) will ensure that the American people find out what really happened.

I think Trump underestimated how corrupt the establishment really is, but one can't blame him. I don't think any of us realized how bad it is. The cretins in the intelligence community, the DOJ, and the FBI (senior management)—all SO smart—misjudged Trump and the citizenry. As for the Media, after all this I honestly don't understand how people can still take them seriously anymore.

I mean, I know that most people will consume news that confirms their biases about reality. Most people and are less interested in the actual truth than they might imagine themselves to be. They like the idea of the truth. They like it when their view of reality seems to be supported by an objective truth. But when the news being reported seems to contradict their view of reality, I suspect that many people will just stop watching it in order to avoid cognitive dissonance.

If you're a person who really, really hates Trump, obviously you want to believe all these horrible things about him. A person like that will have happily consumed all the nonsense about Trump that's been put out by CNN, MSNB, the NYT, WaPo, as well as all the late night comedy shows have put out over the past 2+ years. All the wild speculation about collusion, the constant interpreting of all of Trump's actions in the worst possible light, all the dumb jokes, would be something a person who hated Trump would greatly enjoy watching. All the promises of the Mueller report, what would happen once it was released, the certainty of impeachment! would have kept you eagerly watching and reading.

But now reality has let you down. Your options are to either ignore or deny reality, or accept it as it is. But either way, you're probably not going to watch or read from those sources that let you down for a while. You might even be at least a little more skeptical of certain negative stories about Trump from unnamed "sources" if you're capable of any level of self evaluation.

The people that support this coup must be shamed.

From this article:

The AP noted that the Palestinians have prioritized paying Palestinian terrorists out of its “martyr’s fund” over other budget priorities. For example, now that the United States and Israel have imposed punitive measures on the PA for its refusal to negotiate and its continued financial incentives to terrorists, “the Palestinian Authority has begun paying only half salaries to tens of thousands of civil servants, reduced services and increased borrowing.”

This is unsustainable in a normal environment. The PA would implode without outside support and there would be peace.

But the globalists fund the terrorism and strife. They control the major EU countries that are the primary funders of this crap.

This is tied directly to the deep state war on Trump and our country. The globalists want the strife. They want war and misery and they want to blame it on Trump.

To her credit, AOC is reviving the pertinent question:

ISIKOFF: What would be your top three if you were drafting the articles of impeachment?

OCASIO-CORTEZ: The top three? I think number one is emoluments. I think it’s always been emoluments. It’s always been about that for me.

ISIKOFF: Two and three?

OCASIO-CORTEZ: Two and three. I think two would be tax fraud. And number three, um. Man, number three.

ISIKOFF: Interesting that you don’t mention Russia.

OCASIO-CORTEZ: No, I don’t. Because I think that for a lot of aspects of the Russia investigation, as we saw with the Mueller report, I think there are a lot of parts of the Russia issue that some down to emoluments. Pay-for-play, financial transactions, Trump Tower. It comes down to money. And if we had gotten something from the Mueller report I would probably put that up there as number one, but I feel like it is a little risky to put all your eggs in that basket. And I think a lot of this stuff happens through backdoor bank accounts and stuff like that. So emoluments kind of includes any financial misconduct in relation to Russia.

Achilles I'm with but I don't see that happening. Here's my test case:

"Clanton attacked at least three people with a metal U-lock during the April 15 rally in and around Civic Center Park. Court papers later revealed that Clanton struck at least seven people in the head, according to authorities. One person received a head laceration that required five staples to fix. Another was uninjured but had a piece of a helmet broken off. A third was struck across the neck and back, police wrote.

According to Alameda County Superior Court records, Clanton entered a “no contest” plea Wednesday to one misdemeanor battery charge. The felony charges against him were dismissed, and an allegation that he had caused serious bodily injury was stricken. A misdemeanor charge that Clanton wore a mask during the commission of the crime also was dropped."

If conservatives had the will to hunt down the perps behind the Coup attempt, they would already have put Eric Clanton in a hospital bed for the rest of his life. That has not happened.

It doesn't bring me any joy to realize this. Republicans are pussies. Conservatism has a fatal flaw of passivity, always erring on the side of caution, never going for the ball, always falling back into a Prevent Defense. I'm a child of Goldwater and I have lost faith.

BTW, George McGovern did something different for a politician. He started running a business. A real business, not a PR firm or law firm. And discovered that all those business regulations he voted for interfered with running a business!

In 1988, using the money he had earned from his speeches, the McGoverns bought, renovated, and began running a 150-room inn in Stratford, Connecticut, with the goal of providing a hotel, restaurant, and public conference facility.[251][264] It went into bankruptcy in 1990 and closed the following year.[265] In 1992 McGovern's published reflections on the experience appeared in Wall Street Journal and the Nation's Restaurant News.[264][266] He attributed part of the failure to the early 1990s recession, but also part to the cost of dealing with federal, state, and local regulations that were passed with good intentions but made life difficult for small businesses, and to the cost of dealing with frivolous lawsuits.[264] McGovern wrote, "I ... wish that during the years I was in public office I had had this firsthand experience about the difficulties business people face every day. Nixon had a sort of pious manner and no sense of humor, which was a serious handicap in the first TV election.

Now, we are in the late TV election era where Trump, like Reagan, is a master at the visual arts. It also happens that the grifters from Arkansas immunized the electorate to crooks.

I hope that there's a special place in hell for those who want to rend the country again like it was in the seventies. Please let the courts suss this out, ignore the shouting on the left and right, and find common ground with your neighbors.

LOOK! Mueller has delivered a "devastating portrait." Too bad he was hired and expected to deliver indictments, innit? On the other hand, painting in so much detail gave plenty of time for 1) much to be leaked and 2) much (and more important) to be scrubbed.

Our organs of state security couldn't even frame the guy competently. No wonder the Sovi--sorry Russians--ran wild. Or so we are told. Too bad we didn't have anyone in authority to protect us from their wiles.

Fen: "I checked them out last night. Their main article on the Meuller report had NINE comments."

Perhaps LLR Chuck only had time to leave 9 comments, assuming Jonah and David French's sockpuppet didn't leave their requisite number.

The globalists are going to tire of their cucks at NRO if they aren't useful anymore and stop paying them.

Just like they stopped supporting weekly standard when it became worthless to them.

narciso म्हणाले...

no they look at him and laugh 'what a maroon' we make this stuff up for the proles, but you aren't supposed to take it seriously,

I don't like to use the word 'cuck' because it suggests they were faithful at one time to a standard, maybe a long time ago,

Achilles: "Just like they stopped supporting weekly standard when it became worthless to them."

Actually, Phil Anschutz got tired of the lefty BS all of LLR Chuck's heroes were putting out so he pulled the data out of the operation that was still worth something and then cut the The Cuckly Standard crew loose.

Cap'n Billy Kristol couldn't find any backers so the Cuckly crew cut him loose to try and salvage the lefty operation and they still couldn't find any lefty backers.

So Billy boy hiked on down the road a piece and linked up with Pierre Omidyar who was looking for piece of crap trust fund babies like Kristol who would be willing to shed their faux LLR persona and go full lefty in service to the left.

And our own LLR Chuck looooooooooovvvvvvveeeeeessss him some Li'l Billy Kristol.

Howard wrote: “If you people won, why do you bleat so loudly in pain and agony? If you can't stand the heat, get out of the frying pan.”

Well Howard, it’s not bleating, it’s more akin to sighing from sadness that Resisters like you and NeverTrumpers like Chuck, rather than being relieved and glad that Mueller and his Democrat button men found neither evidence nor excuse to prosecute the President of the United States for conspiring with Russia to pollute an election or obstructing justice, prefer to wallow in your delusions and smallness to the detriment of your country.

Evidence? Meh? Trump Derangement Syndrome abides.
