"Karma is an unkind mistress. However, suffering couldn't be better visited on any other group than they who sought to impose suffering upon others to enrich themselves."

"Enjoy, Islamic State crazies. Let's talk when you're ready to permanently give up trying to kill and oppress others."

That's the top-rated comment on the Washington Post article "The Islamic State’s refugees are facing a humanitarian calamity." To the commenter who pushes back with "these are people. women and children caught in the middle of something you'll never understand," he comes back with, "I understand far better than your crude mind that these folks were part of the extremist clan who sought to rob, kill, and enslave everyone they thought they could get away with robbing, killing, and enslaving. Go on over and offer them your assistance if you believe otherwise. Meanwhile, leave the purported 'thinking' to adults."

Another highly rated comment is: "Zero sympathy for these terrorists. The atrocities that they committed should not be overlooked. My friends Uncle was a Syrian man living a quiet life. As my friend tells it he was tortured and forced to dig his own grave. No sympathy for terrorists." And: "ISIS brought calamity to every town, village or city it conquered. Mass graves of victims are still being uncovered. The survivors of their savagery deserve help...but these, these are the perps. Foreign women who joined the caliphate were active participants in this evil...and they had no mercy towards anyone else's children. They went to Syria voluntarily... this is the world they wanted. I hope they stay there."

They gave no quarter. They delighted in sadism. There is video evidence a plenty. They should suffer live on television and their suffering broadcast globally free-of-charge.

Any mercy their 'dependents' receive should be of exceedingly marginal quality. They should be allowed to live - if you can call 'survival' living.

The message should be of a 'historical' nature. This is what acting like beasts will provide you.

It is unclear from the article how many were residents of the region caught in the fighting and how many emigrated to the temporary caliphate.

People's wickedness is motivated by logical and secular incentives. Men can be wicked by chance and choice. Women can be wicked by chance and choice. Children can be wicked by chance and choice. During the three trimesters before leaving our mother's womb, we are likely innocent for reasons of causal limitations, sensory deprivation, and logical constraints.

William म्हणाले...

Isis definitely has a branding problem. It's hard to put a positive spin on enslaving women and killing children. Here's what they have working for them so far as image goes: There will never be any movies made detailing their atrocities. Such movies would lead to Islamophobia. That's a far worse crime than anything perpetrated by the followers of Islam. Better far to discuss and dramatize the sins of white supremacists. The victims and villains of the Isis saga after this small ripple will pass into obscurity like all those starved peasants and fanatical Communists during the Russian revolution. We'll learn more about the pathology of white people in New Zealand than the craziness of Islamophiliacs in Syria.

Rick म्हणाले...

I suspect there's fewer economic refugees in the middle of nowhere.

This isn't relevant. The point is that charities and NGOs managing refugees classify adults as children because it advances their political preferences. Since they've proven they cannot be trusted their assertions mean nothing.

Individuals leave to greener pastures, but everybody do not pick up and leave without also a powerful push from behind.
The first four caliphs established the rules for Sunni, Shia, Jews, Christians, and adherents of assorted other infidel faiths should live together in peace, which they more or less did for 1400 years.
So what changed with WWII?

One thing, of course, is the Age of Oil, which brought enormous amounts of money and new technologies and promises to the few who controlled the guns.

Ann Althouse said...It's time to disaggregate "women and children."

Yes, but thinking deeply about it...maybe. If the women remain with the children it's not such an easy thing to separate them intellectually.

I listened to an NPR story this morning on Yazidi women who were kept for 3-5 years as sex slaves to ISIS men and have recently been freed--they are being forced to leave the children they had with ISIS men behind when they return to their homes. Yazidis consider the offspring of a Muslim and an Yazidi to be Muslim and will not accept such a child, so a woman who brings that baby back will be socially ostracized. The story was about an orphanage and the harrowing decision the women were making to leave their kids there. It was heartbreaking! (The orphanage was run by Kurds who said the children would be given good home with Kurdish families, and most of the kids were too young to really understand what was going on).
Anyway I was struck by the bronze-age nature of the ISIS problem. I read a fair amount of ancient history and the rules for conquering back then were such that the winning side would often enslave/sell off or murder all the men and old women and kidnap and rape the younger women of the defeated side. They imposed their victory on the bodies of the defeated women and forced them to assimilate by co-opting their very children! That's a degree of total war that's difficult to comprehend...until you realize that's exactly what ISIS did and would happily continue to do.

Those, of course, were women taken against their will. For women who volunteered to join ISIS and wanted to perpetuate that idea--in part by raising their children to be ISIS members/fighters...I'm not sure that should be forgiven and I'm not sure we should allow such people to keep their children. I mean, the kids themselves are innocent, sure. But I would not allow the mother and child back into society together just for the sake of the child. I would say "you were a fighter for this barbaric group and bear the guilt of their horrible crimes. You will never be allowed back in. Your child is innocent of your crimes and we will accept your child--if you give up custody we'll place them with someone here (possibly even someone in your family who did NOT decide to join ISIS). If you insist on keeping your child then you must both remain outside of our society forever."

Almost a test here (been a long time).

One thing that changed post-1948 is that Jewish communities from all parts of the Islamic world left/were forced out by the (usually) Baath Party dictatorships that came to infest it.

The Jews had been in these lands longer than the Muslims in most cases, and played a part in urban and economic life cognate with parts of Europe, with the added wrinkle that the European imperial powers often found the local Jews useful in administration.

The process took decades, and is almost unknown in the West.

As to someone's comment on US trucks powering victory in WWI--wrong war.

FIDO म्हणाले...

Shrug.

These things are simple to solve. That does not mean EASY.

Every man who is over the age of 15 who went to a Madras is to be executed. These Madras' will be burned and blown up.

Any man above the age of 16 who was in any leadership position above sergeant will be executed.

The men who were responsible for destroying the ancient artifacts will be used to destroy mosques and madrases.

Men who wish clemency for them and their families can do so by personally executing one of the Imans, leaders, and turn in all his families Korans.

They need a permanent marker to write the word 'Criminals of Islam' on their foreheads. It won't last forever, but it will warm people if groups of known violent malcontents are seen gathering so they can forestall it accordingly.

They must know that they LOST.

This is not to play nice. These people are rapists, murderers, and destroyers of other cultures.

I always love the statement of how many 'children' die by gun violence a year.

That these 'children' were wearing gang colors, carrying guns and drugs, and were engaged in tribal ethnic cleansing is somehow overlooked in the details.

And the women? What moral responsibility do women own? When Sharifa was looking at the rings on her fingers that her husband cut off the hands of some woman he murdered, when she berated and abused the Christian female slaves for not doing the housework to her satisfaction...what kind of 'mulligan' are such women owed?

This is not to say that these women were fully autonomous women with political strength. But before we just give wholesale forgiveness to them, maybe we ask their slaves how these women comported themselves before Althouse talks us into going all weepy eyed and soft for them.

Equality means that women can be horrible, monument destroying, enslaving, murdering and gay son murdering advocates as easily as men. And the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.

I do not fully push for this, but a good counter argument needs to be made.

FIDO म्हणाले...

What clemency is Hoda Mothana owed? She left America to fight for ISIS. She spread her legs for not just one, but THREE ISIS fighters (I assume the men went on to their virgins before she moved on to the next man. After all, just because she is a terrorist doesn't mean she is a SLUT!)

She is a woman who attacked people and America. She has a child. She picked Syria over America and has no comment as to why.

What is this woman and her child owed?

MB म्हणाले...

The Syria they are living in is no worse, in many ways better, than the Syria they were trying to build for everyone else.
Had their men fought harder, now the Alawite men would be dead and the women and children would probably not even be in refugee camps, but rather sold as slaves at the caliphate slave markets.

They are pulling at gullible Westerners' heartstrings. However, the same Saudi, Omani, Qatari, Emirati, and perhaps Kuwaiti Islamic charities that propped this absurd endeavor (ISIS) should properly be the ones to take care of these widows and orphans now. The Persian states are rich, they can afford it. I just don't see why the West should be on the hook for this one.

They took their chances and earned their prize. Better luck next time.
